#NGSSChat! Join us for the 2018 CA STEAM Symposium on Oct. 28-29th at the Long Beach Convention Center! Regular registration is open for this 2 day professional learning event https://t.co/1opJ6ITQTV#CANGSS#STEM@cascience
Good evening! I’m Jenny from Vista, CA. @cascience Primary Director, @CasitaMagnet#STEM specialist. I’m in Sacramento serving on a panel to review science materials. I’ll be popping in and out but looking forward to the chat. #NGSSchat
TJ McKenna - science guy at the @CTScienceCenter and extremely pumped to be joining the faculty at Boston University @BUWheelock college of ed this fall!! #NGSSchat#NGSS
CA Ts need to complete a program before they can clear their credential - So I work with "new" Ts who have a contract and I mentor them for 2 years. We meet and do have assignments, but it's mostly reflection pieces. I really enjoy it! Thanks for Asking :) #NGSSchat
A1 STEM is The creativity of Science, the innovative tools of tech, the problem solving of Engineering and the logic of Math. #ngsschat - this answer could be written with lots of different ways.
Brian, from IL checking in a bit late
A1 #STEM is a verb, the methods by which problems are solved. Powerful for Ss because of the creative ways they can solve problems #ngsschat
A2: Starting with a vexing question! Different people will tell you different things. I see it as using all four letters to solve problems and make the world a better place. Integrating the right combo of letters at the right times. #ngsschat
A1: I love the integration that STEM offers in creative problem solving. Not sure why we teach in compartments when the real world doesn't work that way. #NGSSChat
A1: #STEM is about the application of the different disciplines to understand the world and design solutions. It’s relevant, personalized, collaborative, and creative. #NGSSChat
A1: STEM is tricky because in practice it traditionally means (pick the letter that you know the best and then do that) & then we hope the others come along for the ride #NGSSchat
A1: STEM is engaging, meaningful learning for students and teachers that build critical thinking and connections through real world experiences/problems in collaborative environments using practices within, through, and among disciplines #NGSSChat
A1: I love that STEM is not just the four subjects in its name, but also something that represents the spirit of innovation and critical thinking. #NGSSchat
(also, hi everybody!)
A1 We should not overlook the S in STEM- or let others overlook the importance of the S in STEM. Too many STEM projects ending up being crafty... #ngsschat
A1: I love the integration that STEM offers in creative problem solving. Not sure why we teach in compartments when the real world doesn't work that way. #NGSSChat
A1 STEM should be a way of tackling problems by using multiple angles to present solutions but I am afraid it is turning into a buzzword like “inquiry” #ngsschat
A1: I think STEM is powerful when the technology and mathematics are used in the service of developing authentic science explanations and engineering solutions. #NGSSchat
Hi all! Ashley from CT/UConn joining in a question late. Currently completing an engineering summer fellowship in hopes of learning how to actually carry out more STEM-based activities through engineering tasks. #NGSSchat
A1: I love that STEM is not just the four subjects in its name, but also something that represents the spirit of innovation and critical thinking. #NGSSchat
(also, hi everybody!)
A2 I do not think I have STEM well defined in my classroom. Meaning. it isn't part of my conscious teaching strategy and lesson plan. I need to fis that. #ngsschat
The #NGSS are for ALL students for a reason. For too long a certain kind of science has been privileged and thus the limited diversity of ideas is where we are struggling. We need to privilege diverse ways of sensemaking to make the leaps we need #NGSSchat
A2 I do not think I have STEM well defined in my classroom. Meaning, STEM isn't part of my conscious teaching strategy and lesson plan. I need to fix that. #ngsschat
I had the opportunity to attend an NGSS 2 day workshop for grades 3-5 (supported by @cascience) where Ts from @JurupaUSD taught actual lessons - These NGSS lessons incorporated STEM and were amazing! #NGSSchat

Hands-on activities, communication amongst students, collaboration with my colleagues, solving problems, 21st century learning, and most importantly students stepping outside of their comfort zone to work together and achieve a common goal that has many solutions. #NGSSChat
#NGSSchat A2: the 4 Cs-critical thinking, collaboration, communication, creativity; real world; career connections; alignment with standards; interdisciplinary connections
A2: as I am thinking about the creation of the first unit we will implement, I am looking for phenomena that is interesting to our diverse students. I am also trying to think of ways our students will be able to model the learning. #NGSSchat
Students working together to make a plan and sketch that plan before moving forward, working in teams and what to say when you disagree, using tools appropriately and with a purpose, reflecting on what happened and revising. #NGSSChat
A2: Using the equip rubric helps in developing units. Meaningful, interesting phenomena and problem solving. Opportunities for productive talk, writing, and drawing. Exploration first. #ngsschat
Thinking about the 4C's and the NGSS SEPs can be helpful. Many of the SEPs also help develop the 4C's. Tech can be used to collect data, analyze data, and communicate data. I have app suggestions if anyone wants them. #NGSSChat

Hi Tricia! So far, I’ve learned just how much cross-department collaboration it takes to solve a problem. I’m working with a biomedical engineer who I thought was working alone on his doctoral research however he requires a cell biologist for help! #NGSSChat
A2 Getting adjusted to implementing NGSS has been time intensive-3 years for me. I’d like to see more engineering opportunities built into the great 3D units already created. I let robotics and coding go because it was overwhelming. #NGSSchat
#NGSSchat A2: the 4 Cs-critical thinking, collaboration, communication, creativity; real world; career connections; alignment with standards; interdisciplinary connections
I can easily get the S and E into lessons. How to truly integrate M and T with elem. kids? Most often I see M used peripherally and T as just a fun add-on. #NGSSChat
Describe a integrated 3D STEM experience. What does STEM look like in an #NGSS classroom? What are the critical attributes of #NGSS + #STEM ? #NGSSchat
A2 STEM is embedded in my curriculum, I am focused on the S in stem since my subject is SCIENCE. Engineering is part of that and tech & math are related, but my focus is on the S. #NGSSChat
I see what you are saying. Sometimes it is difficult to make all S T E M integrated in a lesson meaningful. #ngsschat - maybe that is why I have so much to fix in my lessons.

Patrick from Lexington, KY. 8th grade science. #ngsschat Remember we need you fine folks to sign up for @NGSS_tweeps for a week! You know you want to!!!
A2: Essentials of #STEM: must be relevant, nurture curiosity, foster creativity, based on phenomena, and student centered. Approaches include collaboration and communication with a development of grit through iterations. The rigor relevancy should be driven by #NGSS. #NGSSchat
What about using something like @Flipgrid to have students talk about their learnings and then have students interact with their own thoughts later on as a form of reflection /growth #ngsschat

Ooo I like that idea since if you really understand it you should be able to “teach” others and he teaching would be displaying in their coding #ngsschat

This is a great point Wanda! There's a lot on our plates in this new vision! A colleague recently helped me see the places where I was giving kids opps to use the engineering design process to use the science we built in our storyline-- opened my eyes :) #NGSSchat
I like @TuvaLabs for data analysis, student-generated Google forms for data collection. I'm also interested in how we can use tech tools to communicate to different audiences - not just classic scientific writing. Think infographics, cartoons, and video projects. #NGSSchat
A1. I think #STEM is meant to show the interconnectedness of learning. Unfortunately, it can lead to greater "siloing". STEM can get pulled out as a separate course, which can make it harder to connect to everything! #NGSSchat
Hi everybody, I like to begin with natural phenomena. All kids now begin on the same level playing field, get engaged, and begin developing their own inferences. #NGSSchat
Describe a integrated 3D STEM experience. What does STEM look like in an #NGSS classroom? What are the critical attributes of #NGSS + #STEM ? #NGSSchat
A3: I saw a great lesson where the Ss were using knowledge of thermal energy and chemical reactions to design an efficient heat pack. Ss were using tech to film their experiment results to be able to use it as evidence to share with peers. #ngsschat

It's where the students are using the various aspects of science, tech, engineering and math to understand/solve a phenomena while using the SEP's and CCC's. #NGSSchat
One way I’ve been integrating the T is by using @Ozobot. Beside for the obvious connections to coding, the mini-robots can we used in any subject area... maps, story maps, fact fluency, etc. #NGSSChat
Describe a integrated 3D STEM experience. What does STEM look like in an #NGSS classroom? What are the critical attributes of #NGSS + #STEM ? #NGSSchat
A3 We tested new sound panels for the cafeteria (before and after installation, designed and tested materials, created an argument for best placement, used technology to test sound levels, calculate noise levels and created questions about the causes of "weird" data. #NGSSChat
Describe a integrated 3D STEM experience. What does STEM look like in an #NGSS classroom? What are the critical attributes of #NGSS + #STEM ? #NGSSchat
#phenomena is the driving aspect that engages students to figure out something. It makes the content and processes relevant and necessary. It makes learning FUN! #NGSSChat
A4 #Phenomena are the heart beat of #STEM It feeds all aspects & provides direction for Ss to discover while they are implementing each component #ngsschat
Love this example-- using science to inform the EDP, using tech to support the data collection + analysis and it ALL coming together in a communciated explanation! #NGSSchat

One of my struggles is how can we support those educators who are hired in the Math/Science partnership roles or STEM roles when they are only math or only science trained. What kind of PD is needed for this transition...? #NGSSchat#NGSS
A little bit of a learning curve but students can upload their own data or look at bigger supplied data sets and then manipulate the way that it is displayed and run basic stats on it. It's worth it if you use it consistently as your data analysis tool. #NGSSChat

A4: Phenomena drive student learning and provide real world context. I loved my math Ts but everything I learned was devoid of real world context. Even most science classes, until I got to college. #ngsschat
A3 in the @nextgenstoryli1 sound unit, simulations and computers apps are used to figure out sound. Math connections and one engineering opportunity are available in this unit. #NGSSChat

I don’t think kids always have to use numbers to think mathematically. Asking them to notice, wonder, name patterns, connect ideas, extend, count, measure - these all connect to math, I think. #NGSSchat
This is such a great idea! It would definitely help illustrate each piece better. Do you have experience with this? Is it worth it to write it down? #NGSSChat
They have to become interdisciplinary collaborators, just as we ask our teachers to be. Learn about the practices and connections in the other disciplines. Seek PD in the content area you’re not as familiar with and dive in. It doesn’t happen overnight for sure. #NGSSChat
Q5: Please share an example of the Framework + NGSS vision where students are using the science built through 3D learning to solve an engineering design problem? #NGSSchat OR Pls share a fave #STEM &/or #NGSS resource and how you use it in the classroom. (including the link)
Q3: Describe a integrated 3D STEM experience. What does STEM look like in an #NGSS classroom? What are the critical attributes of #NGSS + #STEM ? #NGSSchat
A4: I know how phenomena fit into SCIENCE lessons, but I don't have any claims to make about the other subjects that make up STEM, particularly mathematics. Its outside my area of expertise. #NGSSChat
A3 in the @nextgenstoryli1 sound unit, simulations and computers apps are used to figure out sound. Math connections and one engineering opportunity are available in this unit. #NGSSChat
A2: Project-based learning thru hands-on, student-led, multi-day activities (i.e. creating own amusement park w/a variety of simple objects. Measuring, designing, & writing, etc. about it. Then, taking a field trip to explore the engineering & design behind real ones #NGSSchat
Q5: Through observations, students find out that kelp needs wave action to survive. They engineer a wave machine to certain mathematical wave criteria. This is based off of a real-world problem the Aquarium had to solve while they were building the kelp forest exhibit. #NGSSChat
I think that’s because we’re (the world) trying to make it a “thing”...like “do STEM” when in reality our life is STEM. Ss need to see ways of thinking and collaborate together in learning about these problems. #NGSSChat
One place to look for connections is @gfletchy and his three act tasks. They drive a need to generate a mathematical question - the opening videos make you wonder things like how many knots could you tie in this rope? And the apple task! Conserve mass, anyone? #NGSSchat

Why do we read in history?
Why do we measure in home ec?
Why do we use language to describe art?
Simple, they are all interrelated parts of the whole w/the whole being how we think and process #ngsschat

I keep finding the best STEM lessons are more than STEM they are interdisciplinary. Adding in the ELA, Social Studies, Art, Community Service, Etc... #NGSSCHAT
STEM should include all of the subjects in the acrynym. Science-not surprisingly- often includes tech, engineering and math. But STEM should be a banquet of lessons. #NGSSchat
A6. I love the free simulation software that was created by North Western University called NetLogo https://t.co/KID2hIDoMh This is a fairly easy to use simulation software that middle school and high school students can use to create simulations to address some PEs. #NGSSChat
I found that @googlearts has great texts and pictures that can support lessons. I used "Dinosaur" and pushed it out through Google Classroom. My 3rd graders really got into the research we were doing. https://t.co/joT2Wn8lnH#NGSSchat
Thanks for joining! Please join us for the next #NGSSchat on Aug 2, 2018, at 9 PM ET. Please share thoughts & Qs to the #NGSSchat hashtag as well as anything #NGSS-related. We would love to hear what you want support with in the 2018-19 school year!
Q6: https://t.co/wucE9SnBSk to create an online question board, having students write out CER Boards on the desks, https://t.co/4pyCCte1VE for amazing engineering project ideas, and journaling the process using Google Forms #NGSSChat
I often use @PhETsims when sci equipment is limited or not available. Also use them when Ss could easily reinforce misconceptions with bad data. #NGSSchat
There is already great crossover through the CCSS/NGSS practices-use them to help them see the commonalities! M4: Models w/math; S2: Develop & use models is just one example. @NGSSchat#NGSSchat
