Hi everyone, Sharin, AP @HorningMiddle in the School District of Waukesha. Happy to connect w/ my PLN Mates from here and around the country. #AWSAconnect
A1: Trying to use more performance assessments through a mini lesson to get a feel for what it might be like to be a learner in a candidate’s classroom #AWSAconnect
A1 I listen to the answers, watch the body language of the candidate and the interview team, ask a follow up question or two, and discuss with the team after. #AWSAconnect
A1 I try to give them opportunities to discuss and even show how’d they’d structure a lesson. Presentation prompts work nicely giving them something to prepare ahead of time. Better than “tell us about yourself” #AWSAconnect
A2: When I look for a candidate fit, I look less at how the fit our current staff and more how they can drive our current staff. Who will help us become the school we envision? #AWSAconnect
A2 it’s important to meet with the team of teachers they will work closest with. If a good thing’s going you want it to gel, but you also want to enhance the staff. What can they bring #AWSAconnect
Q2: similar to my last answer.... how would the candidate fit on the team/department? Can I see this person as a champion for kids and someone who will add to our building? #AWSAconnect
A2 We look at what our greatest needs are for kids, not for Ts. Then, we rank order and ultimately the principal decides if it is very close. We need strong teachers of kids, not content, those who really want to help us grow, not someone who is looking for a job. #AWSAconnect
A2 would I want to be in this persons classroom? Will this candidate push their team to question why are we doing what we are doing? Will they push my thinking? #AWSAconnect
A3 I have been a part of interviews where the candidate was asked to play the guitar, and not because they were a music teacher. What happens when we put a candidate in a new situation? #AWSAconnect
A3: One of my favorite questions that they aren’t expecting is, “If you weren’t a math teacher, what would you be doing?” How can they think on their feet, and what kind of answer will they give? #AWSAconnect
A3: I was once blindsided by “a six foot penguin walks into the room, what does he say?” I’m not sure I want others to feel the way I did... #AWSAconnect
A3: Flip it and begin by telling them why we are considering them, giving the candidate an opportunity to ask their questions and perhaps giving them time to see the questions ahead of time so we have the most candid responses instead of catching them when nervous #AWSAconnect
Q3: At my previous district, candidates received a standard or LT for a mini lesson and a presentation of self was expected using technology...we could learn more about the candidate as a person and often added some fun to the interview to begin. #AWSAconnect
