They are many different ways to reach a student inside of the classroom. It will be interesting to notice the different ways to reach an absent student. #octmchat

A1: There is a packet of goodness awaiting their return. Any missed work is in there. I also say that the class just wasn't the same without them. #octmchat

I agree! It is a perfect way to spend this rainy evening! Thank you for joining! #octmchat

A1: I'm not in a classroom - but when I used to be, I would have the absent student talk to a classmate about what they missed. Like an attendance buddy. Then I would check in for understanding. It's always difficult to replicate discussions students missed. #octmchat

#OCTMChat Hello, I am Joanne Cangilia, and I teach mathematics education at Kent State. Happy to join you this evening.

A1: Class procedure is they are responsible, but I highly encourage (bribe?) them to visit me during office hours. #octmchat
  • LemmonLady Nov 1 @ 8:38 PM EDT
A1: I often post on @ClassDojo what we are doing so that they can see. I may send home what we did in class if it translates easily. We also talk about them as though they are still there but invisible "For my next group, I need Joe, Penny and invisible Kelly" #octmchat
  • MsHow_Ann Nov 1 @ 8:39 PM EDT
There seems to be a common observation, and I notice it too. It's difficult to replicate those good discussions in class. #octmchat
  • jeisenbraun Nov 1 @ 8:40 PM EDT
A1. Also out of the classroom now, but always had information available on my website, as well as the hardcopies. Love the idea of attendance buddy. #octmchat

Welcome everyone, and thank you for joining me tonight! We will be starting in a few moments to continue a discussion about Access and Equity for critical students. Don't forget to use #octmchat throughout!:)
  • MsHow_Ann Nov 1 @ 8:41 PM EDT
We have our policies, but what about the student who is frequently absent? They are missing more than one great discussion inside of the classroom. #octmchat
  • jcanigl1 Nov 1 @ 8:41 PM EDT
#octmchat I always want students to take responsibility for missed class work and try to provide access to materials iin an organized system somewhere in the room.
    In reply to @MsHow_Ann
  • jeisenbraun Nov 1 @ 8:42 PM EDT
A1. We were also able to request students for extra help once a week. Trouble is, if they were absent for me then they were also absent for all of their other teachers. #octmchat
  • MathEdProfLane Nov 1 @ 8:43 PM EDT
A2: I have no good answer here. I secretly fear that I fail these students, or at least don't do as much as I could. But what to do? #octmchat
  • MirandaFox23 Nov 1 @ 8:44 PM EDT
A2: At my placement we keep organized folders for each class with papers for students who have been absent. We also email them digital copies so they can try and get caught up before returning to school if possible #octmchat
  • BaileyJodie - Moderator Nov 1 @ 8:44 PM EDT
A2: Frequent absences become tricky. We now have @CanvasLMS in our district - so if you're posting notes, videos and assignments, the student would be able to access from home. They could even participate in class discussions through Canvas. #octmchat
  • LemmonLady Nov 1 @ 8:45 PM EDT
A2: I try to work with them one-on-one when they are at school. I also have volunteers to work with students. If a student is frequently absent, they may work with them. #octmchat
  • jeisenbraun Nov 1 @ 8:46 PM EDT
A2. I was always flexible with deadlines. I would conference with the students and discuss a reasonable time frame for completion. Most were appreciative. #octmchat
  • JacquiLehmkuhl Nov 1 @ 8:46 PM EDT
A2: Google Classroom. It is here that I post the thinking to the homework, class activities, as well as supportive videos as needed. Then, they can reach out with specific questions or we can set up a Math Chat for additional support. #octmchat
  • jcanigl1 Nov 1 @ 8:47 PM EDT
#octmchat This is a great question. I try to recommend coming in to see me or another tutor for extra help. I have used Khan Academy to a large degree.

We have great discussions inside of the classroom, and they complete assignments. Sometimes we also have small group lessons where students collaborate to complete an assignment. How do you allow an absent student access the same experience? #octmchat
  • kim_yoak Nov 1 @ 8:50 PM EDT
#octmchat I used to give multi-day homework so that it wasn’t due for a few days. That way, everyone had some time to learn and complete it.

  • BaileyJodie - Moderator Nov 1 @ 8:51 PM EDT
This is tricky and might depend on why they are missing. We have a student in our district who is using this technology to "attend" classes while she is home battling cancer. https://t.co/JkkdjOjoLE #octmchat

I love the idea of students participating via canvas. It definitely allows for accessibility and if kiddos have continued access to the convos throughout the year they can add new connections and relationships! #octmchat

  • MsHow_Ann Nov 1 @ 8:52 PM EDT
Google Classroom is wonderful. I have been starting to use this more as I have become comfortable with it's function. Many students like the personalized tasks while they are gone. #octmchat

  • MathEdProfLane Nov 1 @ 8:52 PM EDT
I often start each class with a short summary of what was discussed the previous class meeting. I ask those that are grouped with a S who was absent to help 'bring them up to speed' #octmchat
  • JacquiLehmkuhl Nov 1 @ 8:52 PM EDT
A3: I simply can't offer the same experience to the absent students. I want to make our learning soooo mathmazing they DON"t want to miss. #octmchat
  • MirandaFox23 Nov 1 @ 8:53 PM EDT
A3: it is definitely challenging to give those Ss the same experience! If it's a multi-day project the other Ss can catch them up, but otherwise just work with the student individually to help guide them as they work through the investigation! #octmchat
  • LemmonLady Nov 1 @ 8:53 PM EDT
A3: I sometimes have Ss partner and share things we did with Ss who were absent for a big chunk of learning. I also try to really reach out to families and connect so that they know we want them in school. At the primary level, this helps a lot. #octmchat
  • kim_yoak Nov 1 @ 8:53 PM EDT
A3 #octmchat I don’t have a great answer to this, but I will say that I just think about all of the techn that offers potential that wasn’t here 20 years ago! 😀

I can't believe how time flies! It's wonderful to read the different ways that you all are creating access for your students. #octmchat
  • reneelynnsnyder Nov 1 @ 8:54 PM EDT
A3: If content is connected and repeated throughout the week, students could join in the learning where they are, and this helps us know how to continue to support their understanding along the learning progression. #octmchat
  • jeisenbraun Nov 1 @ 8:55 PM EDT
A3. I had dabbled with Dropbox but never fully utilized the cloud. A 6th grade student proudly showed me her collaborative slides presentation yesterday. It seems second nature to use Google now. #octmchat
  • BaileyJodie - Moderator Nov 1 @ 8:55 PM EDT
YES! Connecting with families is essential at any level - but especially at the primary level! #octmchat

  • MsHow_Ann Nov 1 @ 8:56 PM EDT
As teachers, it is part of our job to reflect and think about how we can improve something inside of the classroom. What have you learned tonight so that you can create better access and equity for your absent students? #octmchat
  • reneelynnsnyder Nov 1 @ 8:57 PM EDT
Our questioning can help differentiate the learning, if kiddos missed content or have gaps, using strategic questions that are focused and advancing will support them in constructing the relationship between and understanding Btwn concepts. #octmchat
  • kim_yoak Nov 1 @ 8:59 PM EDT
A4 #octmchat I really like @MathEdProfLane’s idea to start each class by having a student summarize what happened the day before.
    In reply to @MsHow_Ann, @MathEdProfLane
  • LemmonLady Nov 1 @ 8:59 PM EDT
A4: I think waiting to give an assessment for students who may have missed a lesson could give them time to catch up. Even if they seem like they are ready, sometimes that extra time is still needed to be ready to assess. #octmchat

  • MsHow_Ann Nov 1 @ 8:59 PM EDT
It's great to see that you are making time for the students to discover!:) They definitely get have a sense that you care. #octmchat

  • BaileyJodie - Moderator Nov 1 @ 8:59 PM EDT
Agreed! And, to your earlier point, the content should span across multiple days so there should be many opportunities to build the learning progression. Depends on how frequently the absences are happening, I suppose. #octmchat

  • rachaelhgorsuch Nov 1 @ 8:59 PM EDT
Agreed. Google Classroom is a great way for me to make sure I get information out to students. I can also post videos that I think would be nice extra help. #octmchat
