Welcome friends. Mary coming to you from Pasadena California curled up in a cozy corner So happy to be here tonight to talk @ this beautiful work we never stop trying to do at the highest possible level. (my FAVORITE topic of all) #G2Great
Before we launch into tonight's chat, can we use the #g2great to send our condolences, thoughts, prayers, and meditations to Parkland, Florida and to every person who is working through the aftershock of yesterday's events? I. . .we. . .are so very sorry. We see you. We love you.

Every Thursday at 8:30 EST, I am astounded how many amazing educators come to #g2great to share their passions. Do you know how much collective passion shows up each week. TONS!! ❤️❤️
Q1: I defer to people in my PLN and listen to their wisdom about what I need to read. I follow their advice about books to read, podcasts to download, resources to seek. @drmaryhoward@teachwrite@leahmermelstein#G2Great
I listen to my thinking. If something catches my curiosity I dive in. If it loses me there is too much good out there to waste time on the not so great. #g2great
A1 I keep a list of tools that are suggested from other educators and then I evaluate them myself to see if I feel that they will push my learning #g2great
I listen to my thinking. If something catches my curiosity I dive in. If it loses me there is too much good out there to waste time on the not so great. #g2great
A1. I look for resources on new and upcoming things that I have not heard about. I also look for things that will help me better work with my struggling students. @kisdlit#G2great
a1) Listen to other's suggestions. Both educators and others. Working on Quiet. Not suggested by educator but so powerful. See something good? Try it & abandon if needed. #g2great
A1 I rely on my PLN to share out great resources and through experience, I know who I follow that pushes my learning. I also know who to go to my PLN for resources that push learning for my staff. It's all about networking. #g2great
A1 I couldn't survive without technology but I'm very intentional & purposeful about what I'll use and when I'll use it. Both are a must for kids! #G2Great
And its amazing how many ideas you can get. I often am saddened that so many people don’t know that learning is right at their virtual fingertips 24 hours a day! #g2great
A1: Really about those things to which we are attending, right? There are shows on television that we know (by rote) the day and the time. We can do the same with any threaded conversation like #g2great. Thursday Night: 8:30PM EST. Each week. Here we are. . .sharing. Learning.
A1 I follow many different people in a variety of areas so I can learn what is available, read blurbs, listen to a few podcasts or TedTalks then I go to Amazon Prime! #G2Great
Yes I get so many great ideas from others. I love QUIET and I read a lot of business books too. I follow people I admire in that world and trust their instinct #g2great

A2. This book is 1/2.
@RegieRoutman.
Decades of reading, writing, & studying with Ts and Ss.
Equity is 1 / 3 of the book.
Equity is MAJOR issue.
#G2Great
Such a great way to push ourselves. And I think it’s important to pay attention to those who may have a varied teaching focus that can support our work. #g2great

I agree - I am learning about resources by becoming part of conversations - on twitter, in classrooms - especially because resources are always evolving

@VickiVintonTMAP
Reading and Writing
and "understanding" is so much more than the numbers from current testing!
Fits the BEST category from
#G2Great
A2 We are working w Ts tomorrow using Teaching Reading with YA Literature and starting a book study next week on Teaching Literacy in the Visible Learning Classroom. #g2great
A2 @Tom_Newkirk's book EMBARRASSMENT and @VickiVintonTMAP's DYNAMIC TEACHING FOR DEEPER READING really shifted my thinking and made me question some things. #g2great
A2: I think I just keep celebrating those same resources but in different threads. For me, early on: the thinking and shares of @ProfessorNana, @pennykittle , @donalynbooks, @barryLane, @englishcomp Literacy Champions. Supporters of teachers. Great shares. Follow them. #g2great
A2: The End of Absence by Michael Harris is not a professional book, but it has got me considering the value of time, space, and solitude in the lives of educators and students. #G2Great
A2 I love From Striving to Thriving by Stephanie Harvey @stephharvey49 & Annie Ward @AnnieTWard. Oh yes please, “We need an intervention on interventions!” - and ASAP @scholastic#G2Great
A2 Smartcuts by @shanesnow really changed my thinking on higher education and what we focus our time on. Do I really need to get an A in art class or is it okay to get an average grade in art and focus my attention in more important areas. #g2great
A2: Not sure if this fits into the resource category but I have found that I grow tremendously by working/thinking through the certification process. Recently renewed my NBTC and am signed up for coaching certification. It is all about the process not the certificate! #g2great
A2. @gcouros -- saw him speak and I laughed and cried and then signed up to see him again this month. His message is powerful cuz he thinks big! #g2great
Not necessarily "resources," but two books that have profoundly shaped my thinking about education recently are TroubleMakers by Carla Shalaby and Brilliant Imperfection by Eli Clare - both happen to be recommended by my teachers, #LitBankStreet#g2great
A2 I love From Striving to Thriving by Stephanie Harvey @stephharvey49 & Annie Ward @AnnieTWard. Oh yes please, “We need an intervention on interventions!” - and ASAP @scholastic#G2Great
One of my all-time favorite go-to resources is Unsmiling Faces by Leslie Koplow. She taught me so much about the power of language in supporting the social-emotional well-being of our students. #G2Great
Q3: I’m going to shamelessly nominate my own book – Think Big with Think Alouds – for this teacher book study. When we show our students HOW to understand a text, we build their ability to independently comprehend. #g2great
Oh. Thank you. Really, Andy. I always wonder when I share them out who is looking at them and thinking about how they might work. Wait until tomorrow's share. Something new with word blocks (hint). If this works. . .game changer in word collection and curation (wink). #g2great

A1 Best way for me to for increase my professional learning is to find the exact bits in books and articles that I need. I don't always read cover to cover. I blogged about that here https://t.co/ijpwCqKoRa#g2great
#g2great A2 So many I could name! Many of you tweeted some of my other favorites but WDTW has definitely been a game changer taking balanced literacy to the next level or next generation as they reference in the text!

A3 @donalynbooks THE BOOK WHISPERER would be the first I'd use with Ts and admin. Singing to the choir here, but still too many practices don't involve student choice and wide reading. #g2great
I loved Innovators Mindset and participated in IMOOC. There's another starting up at the end of this month but this time with 3 books. If you haven't looked into it you should it was great. #G2great

I have my preservice teachers read the article you reference in your blog. Sooo helpful to understand how to get the most from professional reading! #g2great

A1: My Twitter PLN has been the greatest resource in the past year. I get so many great ideas, articles, and book suggestions from the people I follow. And encouragement to follow my heart...did I mention that? #g2great

A3 I'd start w/ a brief article study: Richard Allington/ Rachael Gabriel: Every Child Every Day. Start small to teach process. https://t.co/aOwryyiFwy#G2Great
a3: It is interesting to think about whether it would be a reading or writing book. Writing is usually an add on as teachers are not teaching it. Reading requires a change. #g2great
A3: Choice Words by Peter Johnston. We all talk with children every single day. Each of us can consider our language choices and go live with a new idea immediately. #G2Great
A3 Who's Doing the Work by @janmillburk@kimyaris is brilliant. I always say "Whoever does the work, does the learning." and they shine a light on how much work our readers are expected/allowed to https://t.co/OMmIoLL9VB's awesome. #g2great
A2. Innovators Mindset was a book I read last year as a book study that was very good. I heard him speak at my former districts convocation last year and wanted to learn more about it. @kisdlit#G2great
A3 With reluctant educators I'd make room for choice. Offer several options and allow them to choose an interest. Best entry point. Take a walk around the park before you venture on longer journey. #G2Great
A3 I am going with a second as @franmcveigh stole mine lol Passionate Readers by @pernilleripp was a great read and I would recommend it to many teachers new and old.
A4. I would start with the Not This But That Series. Reluctant teachers are willing to read short books that pack a punch. I think they're a brilliant concept #g2great
A3 I love Move Your Bus by @mrronclark_ it talks about accelerating success in work and how different people in your building either stifle growth or fuel it. Really quick read with great insights #g2great
Oh yes, great point! LOVE Literacy Essentials. We would have made it a required book @bankstreetedu if it had been published a little earlier. #G2Great#LitBankStreet

We need to disrupt the flow of fixed mindsets, Mary. Can't wait for you, @LRobbTeacher & @ERobbPrincipal to be #NYEDChat's guest moderators on 2.19.18. We're going to chat about Find Your Greatness. #g2great

A3: @englishcomp What’s the Big Idea? brought inquiry to the classrooms of my English dept. I would also suggest @gcouros Innovators Mindset and @ajjuliani Launch #g2great Big Ideas with practical applications.
I don't get upset any more @DrMaryHoward I think I am learning not to be stressed by all the tweets streaming by, more just content with the feeling of family and learning. #pureinspiration#G2Great#LitBankStreet
A3: Choice Words by Peter Johnston. We all talk with children every single day. Each of us can consider our language choices and go live with a new idea immediately. #G2Great
A4: signposts and BHH framework from Disrupting Thinking. Double Entry Diaries that I read about in @ctovani I read It but still don't get it. I try to work these into much of my instruction. #g2great
A4 Number Talks have changed the way I engage students in mathematical conversations @numbertalks and @joboaler. And I am a huge fan of @MVPmath#g2great
A3 With reluctant educators I'd make room for choice. Offer several options and allow them to choose an interest. Best entry point. Take a walk around the park before you venture on longer journey. #G2Great
A4 Ok, I'll shamelessly plug here-every strategy in #CLOSEWRITING that I wrote with @stenhousepub I've used in classrooms and inspired my practice. #g2great
#g2great this is the problem exactly. I get so much energy and inspiration from peers who want to learn and grow - but I'm so saddened and frustrated by the number of teachers who are just don't want to learn and grow - or don't feel they have to....
A4. I have used Number Talks in my classroom this year. I love getting to hear how students solve problems in their heads. They all solve it in different ways, which is great. @kisdlit#G2great
A4 I don't remember where I learned about mentor sentences, but they transformed my teaching of grammar. Gone are the days that we look at and revise horribly written sentences. Not when there are so many great texts that we can model AMAZING writing #g2great
Regarding Q. 5 - and previous questions - I would be grateful especially for podcast recommendations on education, literacy, etc. #LitBankStreet#g2great
A4 Incorporated @KellyGToGo's writing exercises into professional development workshop 2 move teachers into expressive & reflective writing 4 S use. Write Like This #g2great

A4: In Passionate
Readers by @pernilleripp she talks about having visuals outside of classrooms that highlight what teachers are reading. It starts to create a reading community!! #G2Great#LitBankStreet
I believe we are born to learn. I wonder what has crushed that for them. Give choices, of course, but ongoing scholarship should be a basic expectation of teachers. None of us are experts...always so much to learn. #g2great
A5 Everything I can get my hands on. I reside in a constant state of hunger to know more, do more, understand more. It’s a joyful never-ending quest to be my best self for kids & teachers & my honor to put that at the top of my priority list. #G2Great
Q5: My never-ending quest for professional growth has been an expensive one! My Amazon Book wish list is quite lengthy (PM me if you want ideas for my upcoming birthday!) #g2great
So true. I think that’s why I love teaching so much even after al these years. There’s always more to learn and it still fills my heart with happy! #g2great
I believe we are born to learn. I wonder what has crushed that for them. Give choices, of course, but ongoing scholarship should be a basic expectation of teachers. None of us are experts...always so much to learn. #g2great
A5 Social media is my playground for quick dip thinking inspired in the company of others that can lead me to even deeper thinking. I'm sad so many Ts don't know its growth potential! #G2Great
A4: @KathleenSkeals shared this blog post with me, which led to the Voices in the Middle article linked within, which led to the establishment of a principal’s book club for 5th and 6th graders. https://t.co/MhRzMpRkan#G2Great
A5 Twitter, Podcasts on my commute, blogs, books. Basically all types of literacies I can find about topics I'm passionate about or just interested in. #g2great
a5: I am often intrigued by one big topic at a time. Use twitter, Order too many books, work in classrooms around the topic, go back to old books and reread only the parts that pertain #g2great
This question now (so A5). We’re talking teaching but always open to new resources #G2Great
Q5 What are your go-to resources to support your never-ending quest to expand your professional knowledge: Books? Social media? Other? How do you use them to grow?
Overheard a student saying they picked George by @lxgino and said they picked it b/c a teacher had it posted outside their classroom as a book they had read. #G2Great#LitBankStreet
#G2great I'm no teacher, but my issue is one of individuality... We all learn differently as student, yet even though there are different "groups" each group is held to the same state standards..#whereisourindividuality?
A5 Podcasts have become a favorite since I can learn from them even when I can't stop to read. They keep me company on the https://t.co/KEaufMsszE many but I love Teach Me Teacher with Jacob Chastain @jacobchastain_#G2Great
A5 Following chats and groups are a great resource because everyone shares titles, insert links to articles and events coming up. Love #tags so I can follow at conferences while I am at home. #g2great
Overheard a student saying they picked George by @lxgino and said they picked it b/c a teacher had it posted outside their classroom as a book they had read. #G2Great#LitBankStreet
A5 The more I read the more I realize I need to learn. It's a never ending cycle. I follow awesome educators and innovators on Twitter and register for great conferences and webinars. Then I learn that I need to learn some more. #g2great
My professional wonder is constant. I tap into Twitter conversations, book / article readings and @Wonderopolis (of course) to quench my thirst for knowledge. My post on professional wonder at The Robb Review for more thoughts. https://t.co/u6Tr82nA6n#g2great@ERobbPrincipal

Rushing off to see a movie as soon as the chat it over. Been on the road all week so really need a movie night break. Don’t let me forget okay! #g2great
Actually, I have an idea...just put reluctant teachers in front of @DrMaryHoward and feel her passion and desire for continued growth. THAT would inspire! #G2Great#LitBankStreet

A6. Twitter chats like this. Continuing conversations after chats via Voxer, FB, twitter, & email. Attending PD and following up w/ speaker & attendees.
AND my #1 is blogging about what I learned & convos with those who read my posts.

a6: I make appointments with other educators to have coffee and talk about what we are learning and to grow ideas. I wish I did more of this. #g2great.
A5: I’ve never gone wrong writing and thinking alongside colleagues within the school walls or with @writingproject / @CapDistWP. I don’t do it nearly as much as I should, but a definite go-to. #G2Great
A5 Social media is my playground for quick dip thinking inspired in the company of others that can lead me to even deeper thinking. I'm sad so many Ts don't know its growth potential! #G2Great
Great message. We give lip service to the uniqueness of each learner unless we actually bring that belief to life by our actions. Too many one size fits all instructional perspectives and we lose the child beneath the mind numbingly debilitating sameness! #g2great
#G2great I'm no teacher, but my issue is one of individuality... We all learn differently as student, yet even though there are different "groups" each group is held to the same state standards..#whereisourindividuality?
A6: I am always sharing my latest find... I will share on Facebook and through email. I also invite my colleagues to join me in a challenge that has been issued through social media or elsewhere. #g2great
A6: The teachers I work with as greatest collaborators—Along with that, I make sure I have teaching buddies as well. This work can be lonely or filled with friends. Thanks @KarenECaine#g2great
A6 I have an amazing voxer group from all over the US. I love having conversations w/people I love and respect who have become precious life-long friends. It’s amazing to know that they are always a finger click away! #G2Great
A6 Go to coffee, continue to have conversations with teachers while I am training so it is not a stand and deliver professional learning, but a dialogue. #g2great
That's one reason @VickiVintonTMAP's book challenged me in my thinking. I pushed back on a few ideas, gave some a chance, and sent her a virtual hug for others. It was no echo chamber of my default thinking! #g2great
A6: I am here on a dying phone, I am in other classrooms on my own time visiting with kids and teachers, I am blogging and I am planning my first TWITTER chat 😁#g2great Also the Canadian Cross Country Vlog of amazing w/ @NowakRo
A6 Twitter chats, facebook groups, webinars, conferences. Afterwards, there's debriefs and action. If you don't do anything with your new knowledge what's the point? #g2great
A6 Love getting together with other instructional coaches in my district and learning from/sharing with them. Keeping up with the tribe here on Twitter helps grow me in powerful ways, too. #g2great
A4: I introduced growth mindset and the constellation of stances (empathy, flexibility, persistence, resilience, & optimism) to my 2nd graders after reading A Mindset for Learning by @MrazKristine. Was already teaching several but this gave me a new framework #g2great
A6 I think that in the fast paced DO IT NOW mentality of schools, we've lost the art of agenda free dialogue. These conversations aren’t about identifying a solution but exploring possibilities that are almost always missed on the fast train! SLOW thinking #G2Great
We no longer can complain about being professional lonely Andy. I love that you have so many supports and all it takes is to reach out! Pretty awesome! #g2great
A7: Admin. need to lead.
Create communities of curiosity in school. EVERY faculty meeting, each T shd bring favorite quote/article/ PD source to share. EVERY meeting!

Video study of GREAT teaching!
#G2Great
It’s all about coming up with an end goal…. but conversations should inspire new thinking that doesn’t necessary result in a decision. Love that you’re writing about that Karen! #g2great
A7 I think that professional curiosity begins w/ leadership. That can start a domino effect that knows no end and circulates quickly! You can’t expect to inspire curiosity in others if it doesn’t start there! #G2Great
A6: I recommend co-authoring a blog post or an article... writing collaborations expose our vulnerabilities and challenge us to clarify—or even change—our thinking. #g2great
A7: Advocate for ts to be allowed to be curious and not compliant. Once they feel like they can be curious it’s easier to encourage them to pay attention to their learning. #G2great
A7 After school PD with @SCCentralSD teachers! We did just that and there were some insightful conversations going about our students, their work, and what's next for them. #G2Great
A7 Same as for Students-CHOICE and VOICE. Ask then listen. What are you curious about? What do you want to learn more about? Share choices of prof resources and let them select. #EdCamps are great for this! #g2great
A6: As a principal, you have to plan intentional patterns of interaction & conversation for & with teachers. Collaborating with other principals often means finding a spot off campus that’s insulated from the bustle of the building - even if it’s only for an hour or two. #G2Great
Seems like it is true coaching...
I love how your "adopted" colleague is leaning in.
If I could change anything about educational work I would erase all perceived judgments and replace it with curious and open dialogue.
#g2great
A7: Can't say it better but I might change lead to join. I have found a power in teachers leading change. Admin that supports that is game changing 😁#g2great

A7. If leaders can get a handful of curious, reflective teachers to start the trend, it will grow. A small group of passionate teachers can pull in others one by one. #g2great
A7 Hopefully it also looks like what I do each day in my schools as a literacy (instructional) coach. We reflect together, we share resources, we try to be curious beings! We inspire each other #g2great
A7 We asked Ts to identify a curiosity and formed passion groups around those. When their goals drive their thinking then our professional resources cantering those goals to life. #G2Great
This is SO important, because how can we inspire and nurture curiosity and a love of learning in our students, if we don't have it inside ourselves? #G2Great
A7: Advocate for ts to be allowed to be curious and not compliant. Once they feel like they can be curious it’s easier to encourage them to pay attention to their learning. #G2great
A7 A school full of learners, from students to teachers to admin. Admin and teachers need to be curious about learning to cultivate that culture in the school for students to be immersed in. #g2great
A7: Professional Book Clubs, Collaborative blogs, Voxer groups are ways I plan on encouraging my school colleagues to branch out. It’s always a lack of time, but there are ways to work around that. #g2great
I’m shocked how many teachers have never heard the books I share at my sessions. And equally shocked they don’t now the names of the brilliant minds who have sustained me all these years, It truly saddens me! #g2great
A7 Schools need a VAST professional library of the best books they can find. Teacher knowledge has always been our best hope so let's invest in it. #G2Great
#g2great A2 So many I could name! Many of you tweeted some of my other favorites but WDTW has definitely been a game changer taking balanced literacy to the next level or next generation as they reference in the text!
We are so thrilled that Kate Roberts will be doing #G2Great next week to explore her newest book, “A Novel Approach.” Please join us friends @HeinemannPub@teachkate
#g2great I recently heard in a podcast that we want our teachers to be Master Learners not Master Teachers. I like this thought. Really that is what professional development is all about learning more than teaching.
We tried a voxer book study in our ed centre last year and it was a great way to engage in prof dialogue with the added convenience of being able to post/respond whenever/wherever it worked for participants. #G2Great
