Azure from Derby, KS. Last fall, we went on a Autumn Foliage cruise through New England and Canada. In a heartbeat, I would go on that again! So beautiful! #3rdchat
Hello! Lesa Haney from Austin, Texas. A bit under the weather, but I have a full box of Kleenex with me and am excited to join in! Best trip was to Italy. We got hopelessly lost, but so many fun memories. #3rdchat
Ron Martitiello. Third Grade from PA. Went to St. Lucia for my Honeymoon. I had never been out of the country. I couldn’t believe the colors of the water and the sand. I felt like a world explorer. #3rdchat
Javier Vieyra. 6th grade Social Studies in Sioux Falls, SD. My favorite trip had to be to California. Walking around San Fran with HS friends was a blast #3rdchat
A1: Bringing experts into our classrooms can assist students with making deeper connections with their learning by building their background knowledge and creating memorable experiences. #3rdchat
Let's just say...during that trip was the closest I ever came to divorcing my husband of 32 years. So many mix ups but also so many funny memories to tease each other about. #3rdchat
My students and I benefit greatly from outside expertise! Students see who is out there (beyond the classroom) & gain exposure to so much more than textbooks! #3rdchat@microsoft for the Virtual Field Trip experience!
Well, it's still the only trip I've taken overseas! (Wife had done more traveling herself.) I guess I don't like to rate anything "the best" but there's only one honeymoon and it was wonderful! #3rdchat
A1: I think that by bringing into the classroom people with different cultural backgrounds and life experiences could be beneficial for students to learn more about the world around them. #3rdChat
A1: expertise in the classroom helps students by exposing them more and more. Provide infinite about of possible connections and one is bound to resonate! #3rdchat
A1 I’m only an ELA teacher so bringing in different people from the community to be #mysteryreaders this year to show them the importance of reading and others love and interests in it #3rdchat
A1: sometimes it is impossible to visit places you are learning about in a classroom, so bringing in people who love or work there id the best way to enrich a lesson #3rdchat
A1: Ss can actually experience things they may not otherwise be able to, the walls of the classroom disappear & we can learn from many experts! #3rdchat
A1: Students love hearing from and meeting new people. A new fresh voice can expose them to a whole new perspective. Teachers (sadly!) aren't experts in everything so having a true expert in an area is great! #3rdchat
A1: Our life experiences are so narrow, and someone has fresh perspectives or views that can enrich our classes.
Using video calls to bring them in is easy ... and free! #3rdchat
A1) Seek out parents and you're building family engagement practices too! Sign up as many parents as you can to offer their own bit of teaching, in person or remotely. #3rdchat

A1) jumping in for this one, Matt - once had local surgeon and native of India, Dr. Singh, to come and speak to the kids about the Hindu way of life. My presentation about the same subject would have paled in comparison. #3rdchat
A2: As mentioned before, Skype is a wonderful tool to introduce students to speakers from around the world. I have also heard great things about Google Hangouts. #3rdChat
Video chats (Skype, Hangouts, FaceTime) are such a regular part of our lives.
We've come a long way from Back to the Future and Marty McFly's video phone!
Since we're all using them, it's easier than ever to incorporate into class. #3rdchat
In the building: I partner teach a Physical Education class with a coworker about 2X a week. I incorporate what is learned at school pd. Outside the building: I use oddball holidays that others have created like #KidInventorDay + theme weeks like #hourofcode . #3rdchat
A2: I love Google Arts and Culture. I can take my students to many museums and sites around the world. My favorite was taking my Students to the Baseball Hall of Fame when we read a story about Roberto Clemente. The students loved exploring. #3rdchat
The internet itself has so many resources! My school (and families) don't have a lot of tech so I'm not able to use too many digital tools. But we did participate in the OREO project in Sept. Kids loved knowing kids all over were doing it too! #3rdchat
A2 I am a big fan of @flipgrid to share S voice within the school community and outside community. Currently we are sharing book talks among our building's third graders #3rdchat
Never done video calls in the classroom? Here's a good place to start ...
Classroom video calls. You can do this. Here's how
https://t.co/h9wC1XWqSJ#3rdchat
A3: Last year, we did a video conference with NASA. Since then, NASA cancelled their digital learning program. I would love to connect with the International Space Station during our space unit. #3rdchat
THIS is the amazing stuff that can happen when we reach out to others beyond the classroom walls! I'll bet it was an unforgettable experience for the kiddos. #3rdchat
Theme weeks and oddball holidays often inspire instant lessons + ideas. The links to curriculum are so natural. Also, many of these types of holidays are well organized already online with links + ideas ready to go! Kids love to be a part of something global. #3rdchat
A2: I absolutely love @Flipgrid (sorry for the 20th mention in 2 weeks). I can’t help but love the connections out of it. My Ss beg to record our “new classmates” in China #3rdchat

A3: Katherine Johnson (Hidden Figures). She demonstrated serious growth mindset, perseverance, & hard work in the face of major adversity. I’d LOVE for my students to hear her talk about how she overcame major obstacles and stood up for herself.
#3rdchat
A3: I would have Joe Biden come talk to my students about personal boundaries and interpersonal violence, since he came up with the 'no more' campaign. I think these are important issues to discuss with any age. #3rdChat
#3rdchat@RJPalacio - I've never seen kids so inspired or moved by a story than the book #wonder - Their connections and understandings were mind blowing!
Whoa, #3rdchat folks ... we have world language royalty in the chat! Carrie has done some AMAZING stuff in the world language classroom. She's a great follow!
A3 Would love to connect with scientists in Antarctica when we return to school in January when we start our integrated unit on Antarctica, any leads you can share? #3rdchat
A3: I want my class to talk with someone who climbed Everest. We read a story about a young man who climbed it. I used Google My Maps to show them a 360 of the summit. However, I would love the kids to ask questions to someone who climbed it. #3rdchat
A3: I think anyone that “is famous” is not only acceptable. I will welcome anyone that students look up to because I know they can inspire and engage them #3rdchat
A cool way to find experts to video call:
Go to Google.
Search "Site:https://t.co/P090lsnPeI"
It'll show you real people active on Twitter connected to that topic.
H/T to the great @mrs_smoke for that idea! #3rdchat

A4: Our grade level just did a virtual field trip with Yellowstone National Park. It was not what I expected but still very fun for the students. These events make learning more fun and takes students to places they might not ever see. #3rdchat
A3: If I could connect with anyone, it would be Thomas Jefferson. He has always been my favorite American president. If he wasn't available @BarackObama would do in a pinch. #3rdchat
We’ve Skyped with George Washington, Ringling Bro’s Elephants, Florida turtle hospital, Australia and travelled over 30,000 miles! GHO/Skype offer so many opportunities to connect! #3rdChat
A4: currently applying for grants... @Google w/ expedetions is the ultimate goal to take Ss to the great pyramids, the coliseum, etc. I want to give Ss experiences they will NEVER forget #3rdchat
A3. Being I teach at a Catholic school, I'd love to conference with Pope Francis @Pontifex. His message of social justice is inspiring + fits so perfectly with our Religion curriculum theme of Comminity of Caring + Social Studies curriculum theme of Global Citizenship. #3rdchat
From #NM and we've scheduled a virtual field trip on fossils in India and we have a virtual shark field trip schedule in January in Virginia! #CantWait#OutsideTheClassroom#3rdchat

A4 Woops.. just answered for A3.. we’ve travelled over 30,000 miles to so many different states, countries and even continents. Always looking for more ideas. Did the first one thanks to one of your emails BTW.. #3rdChat

Fun fact: my cousins' other grandfather (meaning on the side we don't share) was a scientist in Antarctica. He died recently and only then did I find out he actually has a mountain there named after him! #3rdchat
Found a couple who are re-enactors.. they dress up like GW & Martha and speak in the first person. FYI we did visit Thomas Jefferson’s residence as well. No TJ though, just your guises. #3rdChat
My big global connection moment:
My HS Spanish kids having regular video calls with students in Spain.
We're so rural and NOT culturally diverse. It was great to expose them to other cultures and countries.
#3rdchat
Learning about different places, different students, and collaborating on problem solving might be some benefits from connecting with another class! #VirtualPeoplePals#3rdchat
A5: Limitless! Ss are doing a book chat with another class tomorrow on #Wonder, sharing #flipgirds with others to talk about math, with more ideas to come! The world really has opened up!
#3rdchat
A5: I think it would be so cool for students to experience kids their own age with different backgrounds, traditions, and hobbies! I think they would be able to learn a lot from each other,. #3rdChat
#3rdchat Conected global classrooms break down cultural barriers & misconceptions. They could work together to #problemsolve especially around a #UNSDG@TeachSDGs
Q5: learning about curriculum is a given. What I had not planned on was the personal skills of sharing culture and respectful communication. It’s been the best thing for my class this year #3rdchat
Have you heard of the @NatGeoEducation Grosvenor Teacher Fellows program? Apps are closed for this year but look into it for next if you haven’t already! You can win a trip as a fellow! #alaska#3rdchat
I did this with a fifth grade class here in Indiana and a class in Florida! They talked about the hurricanes and compared disasters. Very cool. #3rdchat
#3rdchat A5 Our 2nd and 3rd Graders will be going to Israel in January. Our 6th, 7th and 8th Grade Ss have been to Russia, Sweden and Canada this year.
A5 We work collaboratively with a class in India this year. (The teacher visited my school last year) Kids sharing information with kids via Padlet and sharing links of favourite sports. It is an authentic experience. I hope to do more activities through the year. #3rdchat
A5: Students can see things from a new perspective. They may see models of strategies they would like to use in their own learning. They could gain understanding of a different culture or point of view. #3rdchat
YES! If you want great stories of solving BIG, real problems worldwide, definitely connect with @msoskil.
His students helped to get water filters to students in Nairobi, Kenya! #lifechanging#3rdchat

A5 I love #mysteryskypes because Ss see that there are “other people in the world.” Sounds silly, but they don’t always think about how just because we are freezing here in the northeast that @bmilla84 and her class are wearing shorts and T-shirts!! #3rdChat
I got Nat Geo certification this year and applied for the Grosvenor! My top 3 were Antarctica Galapagos and Alaska but my ❤️ wants Antarctica! Spanish AND polar! #3rdchat
This is a GREAT point! About time zones:
- Go north and south of your location for less issues (same zone)
- https://t.co/mReWECzeov does time zone calculations for you
- Ask, calculate and plan. Then double check your math!

A6: Sometimes timing is a factor. Meaning time in the daily schedule to fit experiences into our day. Plus, time zone can limit how far we can virtually travel away from our building. #3rdchat
I have to head out early #3rdchat but so many amazing ways to connect Ss to the world that I can't wait to share with other Ts! Thanks for hosting @jmattmiller
Q6: My first hesitations stemmed form inexperience with SKYPE! I didn't want wo make any mistakes. Then I realized I should follow my own advise and use a #growthmindset and put myself out there. we have 2 scheduled!! #3rdchat
A6: being new and hearing about all these vet skypers! My situation is very different from a normal classroom studying certain subjects.. don’t know where to start! #3rdchat
#3rdchat A6 Let nothing hold you back! Follow a dream. Started for me in my 1980s HS class. Wanted to bring in speakers to share their stories. We have expanded our list. Here are a few examples.
This is a good point. Time zone issues can be battled with Skype.
Skype has a "video voice mail" option. Record 3 min videos for them to see next time they're online.

We compared home structures and favourite sports via @Padlet. I learned quickly that only a few kids can write at once. 😳But...the benefit was having everybody's ideas all together. It was almost as if we put sticky notes and photos on the same whiteboard. Plus videos! #3rdchat
A6: I’m afraid as a 1st year teacher to bring “too many” ideas to the table. Especially when technology is a slow ball to get rolling. Afraid to be “overly aggressive”. #3rdchat
A6 I’m in!! My job now is to help others buy in. The biggest this is fear of failure. I try and assure teachers it sounds scarier than it really is. The risk is worth providing our students with these unmatchable experiences!! #3rdchat#ditchbook
A6: Well, nothing in holding me back yet, besides the lack of a teaching degree. Once I have that, my only concern would be with different time zones. #3rdChat
I was (and still am) terrified to look "stupid" in front of my class. Mistakes are how we learn. I've been practicing at home!!! #skypefromthekitchen#3rdchat
Two biggest obstacles: Time and Me. I have been swamped with day to day obligations. Sometimes I get caught up in the compliance side of education. #3rdchat
A3 This still is my favorite Skype in the classroom to date. I found our expert from the hashtag #actuallivingscientist#3rdchat Click link below to view video
#3rdchat Also, fortunate to have people visit and share. Mr Philo Barnhart, creator of Ariel from The Little Mermaid shared history with our Ss. My colleague @1988project is a big part of our success.
I know how you feel! Skype Master Teacher @gruffcorn13 talks about how some of her greatest successes (and those of her class) came from colossal failures! #3rdchat

A7: My next step is applying for grants for a VR Expedition set from @GoogleForEdu and iPads from @Apple. The possibilities for these 2 w/ Ss is endless. I will lose sleep for multiple days if it means the possibility of benefiting my Ss #3rdchat
A7: My first step would probably be to learn more about the technologies used to allow students to make connections with people around the world, and then become more familiar with them. Collaborating with other teachers will help too! #3rdChat

A great starting point for learning about video calls: do one to another teacher in your building! With students or without. Easy, low barrier to entry. #3rdchat
#3rdchat Don’t be afraid to contact speakers. Use Twitter, email and phone. Explain your goal and most are willing to help out! If you need assistance, @1988project is the master of contact!
A7 I have a few webinars, #makerprojects and #hourofcode activities left for the next few weeks 2 keep me going. I plan 2 browse and reflect on ideas 2 use in January. ❄️#1 on the list: to try #MysterySkype 4 the first time😳#3rdchat
