Welcome to #pln365 We are excited you are here this evening. Please introduce yourself and share a gif or bitmoji to show how you are feeling about the arrival of spring.
I’m here! I made it! I am heading home from my my son’s b-ball game hoping the signal holds out. Kristi-Tech Integration from Jacksboro Texas #4OCFPLN#pln365
Q1: Assessment is one piece in the education puzzle that highlight students strengths and areas for growth. What are the way you celebrate formative and summative assessment differently? #pln365
Hello! I'm Kelly from Vermont. I'm a Kindergarten teacher. What's Spring? We're in winter #3 out here, which includes Mud Season. I can't wait for green green grass! #pln365
A1: Consistency is key. Formative could be as simple as a class generated celebratory callback. Summative could be a simple email home to praise the efforts. #pln365
A1: ALL assessments should be celebrated equally because it gives both student and teacher a goal to strive for! It plans our future instruction for continued success! #pln365
A1: Can't say I celebrate. I spend a good chunk of time demystifying assessments and reeducating my Ss to see them as a natural, normal part of their academic growth. Relating it more to a height measurement at the doctor rather than a representation of their knowledge. #PLN365
A1 My opinion is the key to celebrating both is focusing on the learning that occurred. Make sure it's not about "Yay you got a 100%" and more about the outcome. #PLN365
A1 I don't know that I celebrate them differently, I focus on the benefits of the info we get from these and the impact on students, and their ability to self-assess, getting excited about the ongoing progress and learning involved in the process #pln365 .
A1. Formative is usually verbal, based on the task at hand, and immediate. Summative is based on standards, more encompassing, and final...until an S asks to be reassessed on a summative once they do some more learning. #pln365
Q1: Assessment is one piece in the education puzzle that highlight students strengths and areas for growth. What are the way you celebrate formative and summative assessment differently? #pln365
A1 All learning happens, behaviorally, because that behavior is reinforced. Match your reinforcement with the intensity of the behavior - short formative assessments might need lesser reinforcement than a substantial summative one! #pln365
A1 - I’m a huge believer in students who can explain things. While I like quick little questions to perk their interest, having kids actually describe and say how the learning has helped them is key. Both formative and summative have there place. Also depends on goals. #pln365
A1: Celebrate" each of them regularly. Formative assessment should be recognized daily, highlighting what is going well and where growth is shown. Summative assessment results should be used to determine if reteaching is necessary for the teacher mastery for the student. #pln365
That's tough for middle school. Ss have been in the system too long. So I'm getting responses like: we're not gonna be ready for the test, why don't YOU teach us? #PLN365
A1: I really approach all assessments as formative that guide learning. If your culture and system require you to place a large emphasis on summative assessments, well then get to changing that. #pln365
A1: I give house points (PBIS) for those who pass and do the best on summatives (possibly adding in most improved). In class praise for formative assessments. Calls home for improvement. #pln365
Q2- Since assessment data is just one part, how do you choose which pieces to celebrate? Also, what is the most creative way you have celebrated with students, parents, and/or staff? Bonus for pics! #pln365
A1: I'm holding parent/teacher/student conferences this week. I interviewed each child in advance to learn about areas students view as their strengths and areas for growth. In the discussion, I add my thoughts too, but mostly listen to them. We celebrate growth! #pln365
A1) There are some summative assessments that are shared with the community and can be used as a time to celebrate growth and student achievement. #pln365
A1. Formative assessments are essential. It allows for@you to see the Ss trajectory and make adjustments as necessary and short Terri wins. If formative assessments R used effectively, you should have a sense of how the summarize will turn out. #pln365
I teach juniors and seniors, so believe me, I know how tough it can be to convince kids to jump off the hamster wheel and trust themselves to learn. Many can't do it. It's an addiction we created. But every so often a few break free. SO worth it. #PLN365
A2: We celebrate assessments that highlight growth, but also offer areas in need of continued growth. In terms of creativity, put it in the hands of Ss and let them run with the celebrations. Students will always surprise you! #pln365
A1: When grading, I write the the number of problems a student got right and circle it... I think as educators we tend to over highlight what was wrong, & forget to celebrate what was right. The latter promotes a healthier growth mindset! #pln365
This could also be how people look at formative and summative assessment! use it as a learning tool. As the catcher, he will never throw that pitch again! Learn from failure! #pln365
In reply to
@PaulONeill1972, @sdtitmas, @_AmandaFry
A2: Recently I let my kids come up with whatever form of assessment they wanted to use to adequate show they 1) understood and could discuss the history standards and 2) develop unique perspectives on ideas. Seven kids wrote a script and cold read it. IT WAS AWESOME! #PLN365
A2 Celebrate everything you can, including failure - just celebrate the good parts of that fail to shape things in the right direction! For celebration to be reinforcing it should be something the S enjoys. The best celebrations are the ones the Ss design for themselves! #pln365
Formative assessments are essential. Summarize are useful in telling you the end result, but if the summarize isn’t good, it should be used as a formative to make decisions about how to provide the necessary interventions. #pln365
A2. A weekly newsletter to parents celebrates events and achievements but assessment data is rarely shared here. State report card usually shows our assessment data. On a happier note, I usually email home to parents when summatives go better than expected. #pln365
Reminds of the Rita Pierson talk, she wrote a +2 on a test rather than a -18, because that told the student he was on his way, and wouldn't suck the life out of him #pln365
A1: The feedback on both cannot solely be the celebration of a number. Quality feedback consists of ways that extend opportunities for learning. Summative gives us more of a panoramic map to look at. Formative is a better heat check. #pln365
A2: Celebrate individual growth by looking at the data together with the student. They need to see how far they have come, no matter how big or small. #pln365
Q2- Since assessment data is just one part, how do you choose which pieces to celebrate? Also, what is the most creative way you have celebrated with students, parents, and/or staff? Bonus for pics! #pln365
And you can't blame them. We've beaten them into submission like a Pavlovian Dog. Now we want to change all that after a decade??? This is why, as a parent of young kids, I fear elementary school in the 21st Century. I shouldn't, but I do. #PLN365
A2: as long as there is growth you always celebrate!! Putting names in school or community newspapers makes the kids feel like a rock star and increases confidence! #pln365
A2: Our district is really focusing on a dashboard approach called the "district scorecard". Lots of data to guide your progress. No longer focusing on state assessments only.

Q3: Sometimes the data isn't pretty. However, we know that every student can learn. How can we then ensure every student has an opportunity to celebrate the growth that they have made?
#pln365
A2 - It might sound too praise worthy, but I try to celebrate a different student each day. Could be a question they ask, a reflection they do or just something positive. We had kids run the mile in the morning. It was 38 degrees. They inspired me. #pln365
My goal next year is to develop the strategy for Personalized Learning throughout the year. I recommend this book. Really awesome insight into how to make it happen. #PLN365https://t.co/8f9X9BDoif
And if the formative assessments for many students are indicating a need for interventions, then it is the Tier 1 teaching that needs to be addressed. #pln365
A2: as long as there is growth you always celebrate!! Putting names in school or community newspapers makes the kids feel like a rock star and increases confidence! #pln365
A3 Using @Seesaw is a great way to show student growth, and share with parents! Parents & students can look back across the year to see progress. #pln365
A2: Failure is progress. Finding out what works and what doesn't celebrates a growth mindset. I have a teacher who creates failure walls where students celebrate what they have learned from struggling. Amazing projects have been created. We celebrate positive results too! #pln365
Q3: Sometimes the data isn't pretty. However, we know that every student can learn. How can we then ensure every student has an opportunity to celebrate the growth that they have made?
#pln365
A2. I like making calls home for academic growth, but I love celebrating growth in character even more. In fact, even when we celebrate academic success, I highlight the “soft” skills. Perseverance, grit, work ethic. #pln365
A3: as long as they know that they are growing it’s a plus...but we must model and and help them understand that DAILY...peer pressure can be a difficult thing to overcome, but with solid and consistent support they will know! #pln365
A3: I am recycling old content on summative assessments (particularly ones that students are struggling with). Shows students that they can finally get it. #pln365
Q3: Sometimes the data isn't pretty. However, we know that every student can learn. How can we then ensure every student has an opportunity to celebrate the growth that they have made?
#pln365
My class completed personal math learning projects that were intensive. We celebrated by presenting them to the whole class. Students took time to ask important questions to help presenters clarify new learning and where they hope to take their learning next. #pln365
Caving is understandable. What drives me nuts is that if we worked together, across curriculums, and ALL agreed to change the paradigm, kids would adjust quickly. But too many teachers are committed to the "true" way of teaching...aka the PRE internet way. #PLN365

A3. I learned last year that giving Ss work that they can succeed at may be where we need to start first before we begin to challenge them. We need to let our Ss know that they can be successful and we are supporting them #pln365
A2: I was having a rough day and needed a laugh so said I would give a “Leary Litcoin” (our class currency) to the most creative & funny @Flipgrid photo. This still cracks me up... Paperclips as earrings 😂 C’mon that’s hilarious. #pln365
I use tracking sheets in some of my classes so students can see the first, second, and third attempts at an assessment. If they reach a proficiency threshold, that portion of the final exam is removed. Personalized finals! #pln365
Q3: Sometimes the data isn't pretty. However, we know that every student can learn. How can we then ensure every student has an opportunity to celebrate the growth that they have made?
#pln365
A3: Personalized learning strategies. Giving kids more and more choices allows ALL students to thrive when they can find what works best for them. It's HARD for kids to let go of the shallow end of the pool, but once they start swimming (learning) LOOK OUT! #pln365
A3: Through student-led conferencing we work to build a culture of reflection and celebration. Every Ss has things to be proud of, sometimes they need help finding them. #pln365
A2-3
A constant feedback loop of high expectations and repetition of positivity. That is always the challenge with different meaningful instruction. Huge differences in pace, interest and follow through. Our job is to celebrate both the big and little changes. #PLN365
A2: We’ve been celebrating the return of ACT and SAT concordant scores at our high school! Seniors will now graduate with a score equal to our state assessment! It is a joyous moment when they realize they have overcome! #pln365
A3 making time to work with each S, set goals, support, celebrate the successes, help Ss develop strategies that work for them, offer diff resources/tools to help them practice specific skills or content #pln365
A3: As a Principal I make it a point to meet with every student at some point to talk about their successes. No matter what the level of success may be, it is important that the students know that I am invested in their future. #pln365
A3: We really only have 1 option- to celebrate growth! So we need to make sure we see it when it happens and boldly recognize it and help students to own their growth by asking... Are you proud of yourself? #pln365
Q4: In order to fully bloom we must be skillful in our practice. How do you celebrate progress while balancing state mandates and fostering a growth mindset in students? #pln365
A3) This is our responsibility as educators. Our students are a reflection of us. If they do not have anything to celebrate then we do not have anything to celebrate. #pln365
A3: Celebrate personal bests instead of THE best! When chatting with Ss always remind them where they started and celebrate how far they’ve come. Encourage intrinsic motivation by highlighting individual growth. #pln365
When students see that they can learn from anything, it becomes less about "what grade did I get?" and more about "what did I learn?" and "what do I still need to understand?" #pln365
Utopia! At least in Israel, many Ts just don't have a motive to change. The system (and themselves) are perfectly happy. Still, I agree - We must unite! #PLN365
As do I. My first question as a parent at my kids conference is about character, not grades and academics. A smart kid who is mean...not what I’m shooting for. #pln365
A4: Keep the focus on the individual data pieces. A state assessment is just that. Model mistakes and allow students to do the same. Praise their efforts and growth. #pln365
A4: Yes, I have to to answer to the state but I could care less about the numbers. I know my kids and when they try their best and show what they've learned, that's what we celebrate. #screwthenumbers#PLN365
A4 That state test is just one day out of 180. If we don't focus so much on it, the kids won't either. If we have the relationships built, the kids know they are making progress no matter what that one test says. #pln365
A4 Set the BAR for our Ss and let them track their progress. Ss need to see their growth over time and understand that state assessments are like a team sport. We rise and fall together. #pln365
A4: All S have growth to be celebrated, and this can be aligned to standards, curriculum & GM; specifically in ELA through a workshop approach where all students are dev at their own pace...but all headed towards the same final goal #pln365
Q4: In order to fully bloom we must be skillful in our practice. How do you celebrate progress while balancing state mandates and fostering a growth mindset in students? #pln365
It's a complex problem that involves teacher pay, school culture, student expectations, and adjusting our mindset to a 21st Century world. So I understand why it's tough to change - but if we don't change, we fail. Evolve or move out of the way (see Dinosaurs). #PLN365
A4: When I talk to families, I let them know I'm more interested in celebrating how much their student grows than if they hit a mandated goal. Luckily, my own eval is based on growth (and my pay has nothing to do with if my kids hit a mandated target) #pln365
A3. Setting goals and tracking progress is important. Showing kids where they started and highlighting the growth motivates. It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish! #pln365
A4: Well designed projects, with deep inquiry, like 20time or Genius Hour, should hit many of the state standards. How many reading & writing standards are hit in a deep research dive? #pln365
A4 - I balance the lessons with parts that I think are truly valuable. It’s impossible to treat every piece of content equally. Nor should we. Quote, “ do I want you to know this, or do I need you to know this?” Big difference that guides instruction. #PLN365
A4: When I talk to families, I let them know I'm more interested in celebrating how much their student grows than if they hit a mandated goal. Luckily, my own eval is based on growth (and my pay has nothing to do with if my kids hit a mandated target) #pln365
A4: This is an area of growth for me. I focus too much on "this is required" "this is likely to be on the EOC" and not focusing on S growth of the little things sometimes. #pln365
Q4: In order to fully bloom we must be skillful in our practice. How do you celebrate progress while balancing state mandates and fostering a growth mindset in students? #pln365
3: Point out the growth no matter how small. #pln365 My Ss were encouraged when I shared with them how they had trended upward. Even if they didn’t reach “the score”. Forward movement is exciting!
A4 I am fortunate to teach 2nd, that said I focus on making S’s love learning, love reading, I settle for enjoying writing for some Love for others, that fuels the growth mindset, creates self driven learning #PLN365
A4: I have meaningful convos w my Ss about growth, areas for needed growth, and keep them in the loopWe devise goals and plans They care in 4th grade, sometimes they have to be taught how to care. #pln365
A4. I hate how much we have to test the Ss. And I am honest about it. I tell them they should do their best and try. However my focus is on what I am helping them learn. #pln365
A4: Growth mindset and soft skills development ARE my goal. The state standards are just a minimum set of expectations politicians demanded to ensure they could show tax dollars were being well spent. If my kids are growing, we're fine. The standards will be met. #PLN365
A4: Set meaningful and realistic goals for each student. Let them be a part of the process. State mandates and standardized assessments do not dictate sound instruction. Embrace risk taking, celebrate growth, develop perseverance and grit in students. We owe it to them. #pln365
Continue modeling for our Ss, continue to build upon relationships, and continue to celebrate the positives in learning; in order to learn you need to make mistakes #pln365
A3. Setting goals and tracking progress is important. Showing kids where they started and highlighting the growth motivates. It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish! #pln365
Thanks for leading us tonight @_AmandaFry! @PaulONeill1972 has been bringing in the heavy hitters the past month and you continued that tonight! #pln365
A4) We must remember that we want our students to do well on assessments however, #education is more than a score on an assessment. Education is about the lives of our students and the society they will lead. #pln365
A4: When we celebrate progress with our students and our adults routinely, it increases motivation & confidence and fosters a heightened growth mindset for all. Then the state mandates tend to take care of themselves. #PLN365#JoyfulLeaders#LoveWorks
A4: I keep my students (the most important part of the equation) and their specific needs in mind every step of the way! I practice flexibility and I take everything into consideration as I tighten up my plans and then I'm willing to change them. I take lots of notes! #pln365
Q4: In order to fully bloom we must be skillful in our practice. How do you celebrate progress while balancing state mandates and fostering a growth mindset in students? #pln365
If standardized assessments went away tomorrow I wouldn't change the way we teach. Critical thinking, creativity and risk taking should be embraced, reinforced and recognized. #pln365

I agree Rich. If I'm not doing my job and that means my teachers aren't doing their job... fire me. We need to embrace risk taking, curiosity, and creativity. Don't be afraid of the questions that can't be answered #tlap#PLN365
If standardized assessments went away tomorrow I wouldn't change the way we teach. Critical thinking, creativity and risk taking should be embraced, reinforced and recognized. #pln365
in Israel, the results of these tests are published. There's a website that tells you exactly how the school in a neighborhood you search did on the tests. Naturally most principles and supervisors align to that :-( #pln365
A4: Let standards drive instructional design of creative student centered activities, then celebrate each Ss individual progress to propel a growth mindset movement! #pln365
Nora, I'm picking up what you're putting down. Celebrating progress doesn't mean it's proficient or not proficient. Personal bests should also be celebrated. #pln365
