Here we go! It's #AppleEDUChat time! Honored to co-lead tonight's chat with the amazing @nancykawaja ! We will be focusing on the heart of accessibility-which is Universal. I'm Hillary from Maine and a WADE. Get ready for the fun- please introduce and share what's in your heart.
Good Evening Everyone! So excited to start out chat this evening. Im super excited that our chat falls on the day following the international day for people with disabilities. Pls let us know if you’re here, where you’re from, what you teach.
#AppleEDUChat
A1) My understanding of UDL is designing materials, instruction & learning space so that every Ss can be independent, engaged & share their learning. #AppleEDUChat
A1: I understand that we need to think about the way that ALL students learn best and provide opportunities for them to do just that! Leveling the playing field and allowing them to shine! # #AppleEDUchat
A1 My basic understanding of UDL is that the students are provided with a variety of ways to both learn content and demonstrate their understanding of it. This helps them take advantage of their individual strengths and interests. #AppleEDUchat
I like that! Removing barriers and going beyond that for your students is always a good thing. You have to be able to accommodate everyone in the classroom. #AppleEDUChat
A1: Universal design to me are designs that were designed for one reason but find their way into other places... for example... curve cuts on corners... useful for everyone.
#AppleEDUchat
A2 #AppleEDUChat I like low entry high ceiling tech activities - scratch is a great example when it comes to coding easy enough for anyone to engage with but complex enough to make sophisticated products. Everyone can learn where they are @scratch#Scratch
A2: With technology there are so many ways to show your learning. Let kids have a choice. Your way (the teacher’s way) May not be the choice of students. It’s not about us. Are we here to see what kids know or are we here to punish them for not fitting into our box? #appleeduchat
A2 #AppleEDUChat#DHH students at my school created video manifestos for the #MarchForOurLives student walkout last year. They used #appleclips to show video of their signing as well as text subtitles for the rest of us.
A2) Allow Ss to choose their format for response. Amazing to watch struggling writers create videos/podcasts to show their depth of knowledge. #AppleEDUchat
A2: Leveraging digital is key in helping differentiate for students, making learning accessible in so many ways! In a second language environment, I would not be able to reach all students w/o the use of tech - Hapara & Google R &W are just some of the tools I use! #AppleEDUChat
A2: Make Ss aware of different modes of communication, & give them the opportunity to decide which modes they wish to use to share what they know. #AppleEduChat
What a great point! It's necessary to make sure students can physically engage with the content in addition to being interested and intrigued by the content #AppleEDUChat
A2: I think this is extremely important for all students because of the variety of learners that we have. Audio for directions, videos for repeated viewing, appropriate text size and visuals. Allowing students to demonstrate learning in various ways. #AppleEDUchat
A2 #AppleEDUChat also giving student tools like #readandwrite from @texthelp and https://t.co/EmJKHanUCj so they can understand the text they are engaging with - super important in maths - also in maths don’t give all your questions as text, give them as images and vid
I think that a huge misconception out there is that it costs money to do UDL "right." What it takes is an open mind and dedication to S learning #AppleEDUchat
A2: I used Clips and video reflections, to demonstrate my students strengths and https://t.co/ba8adwTZIM helped them understand the type of learner they are and the tools they need to be successful. #appleeduchat
A2 I'm a Math Director, so... Multiple Means of Engagement makes me think about the many ways for learners to access the content (interacting with a responsive tool like @desmos, watching a video like the first part of a 3-Act task),... #AppleEDUchat
We have had this issue with coding apps that only allow for mousing on laptop and no alternate methods. iPad apps have helped but more work is needed.#AppleEduChat#hourofcode2018
A2: Gee Whiz the possibilities...tech allows CoReader & CoWriter to read & write for Ss w/significant deficits, virtual field trips incorporating realia in totally new ways, distance teaching, virtual classrooms, bringing Ss who may have been left out before IN! #AppleEDUChat
I have been using @RecoInfo and the @padcaster this week with my students to record a Moot Court, their presentations, a Mock Congress, etc. Great way to have students evaluate their performance. #AppleEDUChat#EveryoneCanCreate
a2: yes, but I am excited about a new Apple Code N Create club which is starting next semester where students bust any limiting beliefs that they "aren't creative" or "can't code" We will use #SwiftLang#everyonecancode 2/month #EveryoneCanCreate 2/month #appleeduchat
A2 I think this could be as simple as providing a variety of ways to submit an assignment (e.g. speaking via video, written/typed, visual through drawing/diagrams/slideshow, etc.). #AppleEDUchat
A3: In a second lang. enviro. there is already that piece of difficulty understanding. For students with needs it can be that much more challenging. It's important to have content represented visually, as well as in both languages so that Ss can make connections. #AppleEDUChat
A2: Backchannels such as YO! Teach https://t.co/WQ2D4sHuFj#PatinsIcam It's free & an alternative to Today's Meet. U can find out a lot about ur Ss when u offer them engaging ways to interact in class. It's risky to raise ur hand at times. #AppleEDUChat
Garage Band Live Loops has been a huge hit this year! So accessible to Ss with complex learning needs...but still creates a beautiful authentic product. Love it! #AppleEduChat
A3) Voice typing, audio reading & experience w/ the native Apple Apps. Once they. Know what the apps can do they can be fearless in responding. #AppleEDUChat
One resource I used, Write About This is an app my student loved for journal prompts. Ss loved the autonomy of choosing what to write about…”It inspires me to be a writer.” Thanks @tearagon7#appleeduchat
A3: The new #EveryoneCanCreate curriculum comes to mind as representation can take the form of drawing, photography, video, or music! Many ways for Ss to see the content, and express is back to Ts! #AppleEDUchat
A3: students can present with video, voice, written language, visuals! Become a character in a story. Become creators! Even Showcase their strengths through drawings, music! Spark a passion and learning will take off! #AppleEDUchat
A3: I have found that when it’s a remediation class— having multiple approaches and options for students works wonders. I use @Socrative@edpuzzle@khanacademy and so many more. Giving Ss options is key. #AppleEDUChat
A3: Closed captions on ALL videos. #AppleEduChat This will improve literacy skills & offer the visual for those students who process text better than verbal.
#GarageBand Live loops is such a great entry point for learners of all ages and capabilities... even those who feel they have no musical talent create something beautiful #appleeduchat#everycancreate
A3 I agree with @theipodteacher on the value of eBooks - they’re a great way to compile multiple means of representation (text, audio, video, images, links) all in one place. #AppleEDUchat
A4: I think the #everyonecancreate materials paired with the concept of student choice is a real go to for providing opportunities for expression #AppleEDUchat
#AppleEduChat peeps - lots of cool tools being discussed but always ask : can everyone use them? If not , then it’s not truly offering everyone a choice or giving them a voice. Options are good, but at least one has to be accessible.
A3: Having instruction in accessible formats for diverse learners is KEY to representing materials. Our instruction HAS to be in USABLE formats for our Ss or it's meaningless to them. #AppleEduChat Let's not forget our iPads have voiceover!
A3 #AppleEDUChat so many iPad apps to use puppet pals, adobe spark video and pages, toontastic, chatterpixs, green screen by @DoInkTweets and stop motion apps
A4: I have found that giving Ss options to have voice to be the most successful. I think we’ve all have had that student that has blown us away with a video or a written piece by a quiet kid. #AppleEDUChat
A3: Ss began using @Seesaw this yr to communicate w/families via photo/video/captions/voice recording/text. Feedback btwn home/school has been amazing w/families sharing Ss journals w/relatives across the world. Love seeing the support & love send to Ss from afar! #AppleEDUchat
A4: Google Draw, Flipgrid, @BookCreatorApp are digital tools I use frequently with my Ss who need multiple ways of expressing themselves en français. This goes w/o saying what is good for one is usually good for all! #AppleEDUChat
A4: Different features within @seesaw allow for ALL learners to capture and own their learning. Features for audio 🗣 recording videos 🎥 adding visuals 👀 and a drawing feature 🖍 too! #AppleEDUChat
A3: there are so many great presentation resources, but I think more importantly, it’s about how clear the content looks and can be understood. Making information engaging, but knowing the needs of your students. #AppleEDUchat
A3 Multiple Means of Representation... @AppleEDU iWork has so many options...create a media placeholder for kids to drop images, use the new drawing and audio tools for kids to annotate and speak about their learning, all of the embedded accessibility features... #AppleEDUchat
Here are some ways that you can provide options for action and expression (the ways learners can express what they know) in order to meet the needs of all learners. https://t.co/hE8YRenGqW#AppleEduChat
A4: Let's come to our Ss & allow them to show what they know by what they use daily! How about in GIFs & model how to make them accessible. [GIF: man moving arm up & down to celebrate] Or use Booksnaps! Photo filters & AR options like @msqrdme#AppleEDUChat
Once they realize they are creators there is a genuine change in how they see themselves - empowered!! Creativity can then become part of who they are too! #AppleEduChat

A3: Ss with learning disabilities require multiple means of representation to demonstrate what they know. GarageBand motivates ss to reread passages and create music for fluency. Seesaw engages ss to collaborate with peers and contribute to classroom discussions. #appleeduchat
Q4: making sense to all learners means finding that relationship or connection with each individual, personalize that students needs and use the tools effectively! #AppleEDUchat
Q5: What are some examples/tools/resources that you use that are integrative of the UDL principles in order to meet the needs of all learners? (Remember to think ACCESSIBLE)! #AppleEDUchat
A4 UDL goes hand-in-hand with Ideas like genius hour or project-based learning where once the students have skills they need. We give them an opportunity to express what they know in a format that suits their abilities and their interest. #AppleEDUChat
Without a doubt!! Always enjoy when young adults know they don’t need me! We become colleagues & then can build life long skills they need to succeed in the adult world!! #AppleEDUchat

A4 Maybe instead of providing a list of ways an assignment could be submitted, it might be better not to provide a list? Leave it up to the students to interpret it as they see it. #AppleEDUchat
Q4: making sense to all learners means finding that relationship or connection with each individual, personalize that students needs and use the tools effectively! #AppleEDUchat
A5: For Ss who need to use speech-to-text for writing...offering accessible PDF graphic organizers & these are all free https://t.co/AhcYvqPXVk#AppleEDUChat
A4: Creating a safe learning environment is key for ss to feel confident in demonstrating what they know. Honor the learning…no matter how great or small. Allow them the choice to personalize their learning. #appleeduchat
A4 I struggle with this... We need to do more than allow students to show understanding in multiple ways... We need to support them in doing so by modeling methods/tools, providing examples, scaffolding to make decisions about what's best for certain situations. #AppleEDUchat
A5.Most people don't realize that @Apple tools have accessibility tools baked into all of it. It works across devices and native software. Nothing to download or install. #AppleEDUchat
Q5: What are some examples/tools/resources that you use that are integrative of the UDL principles in order to meet the needs of all learners? (Remember to think ACCESSIBLE)! #AppleEDUchat
A5: Be thoughtful about your environment - lighting, smells, seating, station areas, etc... Get your students input on how they'd like to have things set up #AppleEDUChat
A5: Listen to Ss voice, offer multi-modal choice in activities & assessments, be flexible in your mindset balancing what is expected of you and what is realistic for the Ss, be a guide not a dictator. #AppleEDUchat
A5: Clips is one of my favorites for the captions. This question is where I need to be more aware for my instruction. Is there a list of iPad apps that fall into this category for education? #AppleEDUchat
This is an excellent point. When getting a new device...go straight to Accessibility settings & explore. #AppleEduChat Speech-to-text, Text-to-Speech, Word Prediction, Font enlarge, contrast, etc. It's like Christmas!
Yes! Most aren’t aware, but we’ll get there with sharing and showing and stressing the right to have accessible content and tools for all.#AppleEduChat
A5: Such a hard question as there are so many! Currently for second language I always go back to Google R & W, Ss are familiar, easy to use and it's so accessible. #AppleEduChat
Totally agree, Kathy. Learning WITH our students is part of the fun - and what makes each day interesting #AppleEDUchat#Everyonecancreate Model curiosity, inquiry, and drive

#AppleEDUchat content is king! Without high quality accessible content, the best tools can’t work for a variety of learners who need TTS and other supports
#AppleEDUChat Peeps this is my favorite from @nancykawaja. This is a great #accessibility visual that is a direct connect to the 3 principles we’ve covered. Post it in classrooms everywhere- How will I access info, process meaning, express understanding? Brilliant!!!
A5: Pages facilitates writing for students…audio, images, collaboration, speech to text, font size, braille. Just about anything can be customized to an individual’s needs. #appleeduchat
A5: Always starts by looking at what is available in the built in #a11y tools with specific mention to guided access/enabling dictation, as well as iWork tools including pages & Apple Clips. Apps like @notability, @Learning_Ally, @EasySpellingAid are go to apps too. #AppleEDUchat
A5 I love Single-Point Rubrics. The idea is you provide criteria/standard for proficiency & students reflect on areas that need work/exceed standards. It does not include specifics on how to demonstrate the learning - thinking Multiple Means of Representation. #AppleEDUchat
This is my favourite - but it is not mine - this is the beautiful and thoughtful work of @ibuddha Follow him. He is wonderful. I begin my day and all I create with this. #AppleEduChat

And the quality content starts from clearly defined outcomes that with aligned assessments. With a clear goal, it's so much easier to create quality content to help the learner reach the goal. #AppleEDUChat
My friend @SuperYoshi86 would agree completely. I can't wait for you to check out some of his words coming soon to a Tweet near you. I thought of you when he and I were talking about PDF's and afterthoughts. #AppleEDUChat
A6: The way in which each of us learns is almost as unique as our fingerprints. This speaks to the importance of differentiation and personalization in the classroom #AppleEDUChat
Yes and the amount of app smashing you can do with it is endless! We partnered @DoInkTweets with @BookCreatorApp and the final product was incredible #AppleEDUChat

Thank you so much @hillarygfphdatp & @nancykawaja for a spectacular #AppleEduChat I have been so busy reading that I am a couple of questions behind!! I really appreciate your leading tonight’s chat!!!
A6: It's refreshing to see & participate in with MANY passionate educators who come together 2 be the voice for accessible environments for our Ss aka: #UDL#AppleEDUChat Embracing being expert learners ourselves. @jlfahlbush@RachelH872
Next week (12/11) we will explore the 4 Tenets of Student Centered Learning with @WickedDecent@DrewetteCard#AppleEDUchat Bring ideas, examples, holiday spirit!
A5 Had to think about this one a bit, but I’m going with Camtasia. The ability to make a video that shows both you and your device’s screen along with the ability to caption it seems to check off a lot of boxes. #AppleEDUchat
A6: we should not just stop when we find one great tool. Keep your mind/options open to more new innovative tools that can personlize learning even more. Going to check out some cool new apps, books and sites mentioned tonight. Thanks all! #AppleEDUchat
A4 As well we can now shared The same content at different levels. Sites like @NewsELA mean students can read information and share it in a discussion on the same topic. This can give every student an access point into the class discussion.#AppleEDUchat
I got so caught up in reading the amazing and inspiring #AppleEduChat responses of others that I completely forgot to answer the second half of the questions! Thank you @nancykawaja and @hillarygfphdatp for such a great night of discussion! You’re both amazing! #Inspired
Thank you @hillarygfphdatp and @nancykawaja for the great #AppleEDUchat this evening! As always, I was thinking about children AND adult learners... how might I make {professional} learning accessible??? Good stuff.
Thank you ALL for sharing your expertise. I'd like to thank @nancykawaja for her generous heart and spirit, but I'd especially like to thank my friends who helped me record tonight's questions with Clips. Grateful to you ALL. Keep accessibility at the center. #AppleEDUChat
I’d be remiss to not mention the latest features in the @MicrosoftEDU suite including the immersive reader, translation, closed captions with language translation, etc....and it’s all cross platform! #AppleEDUChat
A6: many new things to consider after tonight’s chat to start implementing into coaching conversations. Thank you @nancykawaja and @hillarygfphdatp for a great chat! #AppleEDUchat
