Hi #tlap friends! My name is Ashley, and I am an 8th grade history teacher in Maryland. Here is my 5 year old, one eyed pirate pug Benny! #tlap#realpirate
Sweet girl! This makes me so happy. I told all the peeps at the conference —I can’t go anywhere tonight!
I have a chat I MUST attend bc @burgessashlyn1 is hosting!
#StudentLeaders make my heart smile! #tlap
In reply to
@burgess_shelley, @burgessashlyn1, @burgessashlyn1
Educators can do this by really showing they care about their students. This could be the small things like a smile, greeting, or asking what they can do to help! #tlap
#tlap like to share a HUGE day in my life. 11-13-11 the #Beleive selfies began! 6 Years later, this #BELIEVE sign has been in 1000's of selfies. So blessed. https://t.co/Za3o8h86vc
A1: With a smile, a joke & our secret handshake- every morning! My @piratelearners KNOW and EXPECT the best from me. We show kindness, love, patience, & gratitude toward all! #TLAP
A1: Greet them enthusiastically at the door every day. Tell them you missed them & how excited you are to be back after weekend/holiday/training. #tlap
#conversechat#tlap Hey! I'm Beckie- MAT student at Converse College in SC. Super excited to join tonight. Will have TLAP as my textbook for clinical II next semester
A1: By throwing in little pieces of their personal life. Talking about things that happen outside of school that are important to the kids. #tlap#323learns#dgsroyals
A1: I try to say something personal to every student as they enter my room & as they leave. I also try to always say hi when I see them in the hall or elsewhere in the school. I give fist bumps, hand shakes, and high fives often. #tlap
#tlap a1 Need to be loyal, starts before they are your students, say hi to Kindergartners, ask 1st graders how their weekend was, by the time they get to 5th grade, they know you!
A1 Simple greetings each day whether in class or in hallway, get to know them beyond confines of class, written/dig reflections on whatever they feel comfortable writing back/forth! <3 my Ss #tlap
A1: I always try to ask about my student’s interests and passions. They are so eager to share and open up when they know you have a genuine interest in their lives beyond just school. #tlap
Whenever an S asks me if I am busy, my answer is always “I am never to busy for you.” Let’s them know that they are the most important part of my day and no matter what I am doing, if they need me, the other stuff can wait! #tlap
A1: Hall duty is where I get #superexcited to greet every student walking by, fist bump/high five them, and special handshakes with some of them. Nobody escapes me. :) #tlap
A1: Greet them with enthusiasm, smile, laugh with them. I try to connect with my students by learning about what they like, disklike, and sometimes if they are lucky, I break out a British accent. #tlap
A1 - Give the attention needed! When I don't pay attention to my dog, he gets restless - just like my students! Students crave attention, and we need to give it to them positively. Asking them about their weekend, complimenting them or even just giving a smile. #tlap
A1 Create a welcoming room, greet Ss, be invested in learning about them, building relationships, available to support them, making time for them #tlap
R1 Talk WITH your students, not just TO them. Open up about your interests, and maybe you'll find you have something in common. If not, what a great way to learn something new and to learn about your students! #tlap
A1: By being enthusiastic and genuine when you see students in the morning. For some of our students we are the most positive contact & best part of their day #tlap
A1: they accept us for who we are without judgment - every time you walk through the door it’s a fresh moment and love! We need to accept our kids into our rms w/our preconceived notions and let them start over when they make poor choices. #tlap
A1: We’ve got to love on kids from the moment they walk in the door. We play music everyday when they get off the bus (with high 5’s and 🤜 bumps) and our principal says she loves the kids before they’re dismissed from the gym each day. #tlap
A1: In a world filled with distractions, giving someone your total attention is sometimes all it takes to have a huge impact.
Turn away from the computer.
Put the phone down.
Really listen.
It makes a difference. #tlap
Dogs can sense when a person does or does not like/love/feel warm towards them.... so can humans!!! Make students feel like they are in a safe space where they are wanted/needed!! Greet them and engage in genuine conversation every day #tlap
A1: We need to build a community in our classrooms. Each student brings a unique background, talents, and passions to the room....get to know what them and what they love! #TLAP
A1: In a world filled with distractions, giving someone your total attention is sometimes all it takes to have a huge impact.
Turn away from the computer.
Put the phone down.
Really listen.
It makes a difference. #tlap
A1: Treat them like they are the most important thing in the world. Sometimes you have to talk in different voices and be ready to teach them new tricks!! (tell me that you talk to your dogs in different voices) . :-) . #tlap
Today I saw the afternoon kindergarten bus pull up and the the Ss literally ran into the school they were so excited. why can't they do that in 4th G? #tlap
A1a: I also go to their events, sports but not just sports. Band, drama, etc. I go to places they work as part of my routine. I am a reference on a lot of job applications for my high school students. I never say no to being a reference. #tlap
Today I saw the afternoon kindergarten bus pull up and the the Ss literally ran into the school they were so excited. why can't they do that in 4th G? #tlap
#tlap A1: Give Ss opportunities to express their ideas, plan & implement an idea, or be creative. Ss need confidence to help them realize how important they are in school, society, & life.
#tlap#conversechat A1: It's not only welcoming Ss in your classroom but how u interact with all the students in the school. As a substitute, I have kids running up to me in the hall all the time to give me a hug. Can't remember their names but I know I made a good impression
So true! I notice that when I have had a long day and not paying super attention to my dog, he will do things to get attention. I see the same behavior in students! #tlap
Dogs can sense when a person does or does not like/love/feel warm towards them.... so can humans!!! Make students feel like they are in a safe space where they are wanted/needed!! Greet them and engage in genuine conversation every day #tlap
A1b: Be genuine with Ss. They'll know if you're faking it. I can find at least one thing in each one that I like. Connect, pay attention, and enjoy the little moments. #tlap
I find mentor programs in education so beneficial!!! I’m talking highschool kids getting with the elementary kids. Those elem kids look up to HS kids... especially those in HS sports!! #tlap
A1 Unconditionally love the Ss. Every day is a new fresh day.
Always approachable. Maybe it hugs, high fives, fist bumps. Let them know you care. #tlap
Just like our pups greet us.
Those relationships really allow you to take the learning that much further. When they trust you, you can support them as they move beyond what they assumed was their limit. #tlap
A2: I had Ss at the end of last year make short videos telling incoming Ss some tips for success in my class in in their soph year. A lot of them loved it! #tlap
A2: Our school does a Senior Walk where our grads dress up in caps and gowns and they walk through the school to cheers and high fives of the little ones. Reminds our big ones that the little ones are watching, and reminds the little ones of what the end goal is. #tlap
A2 #edtech allows many social barriers age would otherwise impose to be overcome, or at least overlooked. Find a topic that interests everyone and let them run with it, see where it takes them. You'll be surprised! #tlap
My son’s first grade teacher showed up for his birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese and came to one of his baseball games. He still talks about that to this day. @evereverlander is one of a kind! #tlap
In reply to
@burgess_shelley, @MatthewTGragg, @evereverlander
I love my 5 star/blue chip athletes in class. I love my marching band drum major too, and the students running a spotlight at a play. They all deserve my attention. #tlap
A2: I have "House Days" (Like Harry Potter) where students in mixed grade levles work together on various activities (games, logic problems, athletic contests, trivia). The fundraise together, do community service together and work toward our school goals together. #tlap
A1: Howdy Ashlyn; great Q. Here's something I came across years ago that speaks to me every day. It's what I strive for as I delight in the presence of our superheroes! #tlap
A2 Let students learn how to be around others. Learn how to laugh with others, play, and interact. It's a life skill and something that takes practice. #tlap
A2: I would love for my students to have some connection to high school. 8th grade is such an odd year that can impact their high school performance (what classes they go into, what extracurricular activities they can participate in) but they don't realize it. #tlap
A2: 5th and 8th gr Ss read the same book #towersfalling 8th graders created #VR scenes in @cospaces_edu then shared with 5thgraders. Amazing interaction!! #tlap
A2 There is something about intergenerational learning that is inherently powerful! Our grade 8s have the opportunity to visit and share common experiences with residents of a carehome in our neighbourhood! #intergenerationalhook#tlap
R2 Call me lazy, but I love sitting back and letting my advanced ceramics students teach my first years. Of course, I'm always there to help if necessary. But allowing students to teach builds skill and confidence. #tlap
A2: We have a particularly difficult Kinder class with lots of needs. We have a 5th grade class that happened to have the same lunch time. It is amazing to see them go through the line and dine together each day! Great for students and teachers! #tlap
A2: We can all learn from each other. I try to point out the positive in each group, to the other group. It's fun to watch them stand taller! #323learns#dgsroyals#tlap
A1: Howdy Ashlyn; great Q. Here's something I came across years ago that speaks to me every day. It's what I strive for as I delight in the presence of our superheroes! #tlap
A2: With a spiraled curriculum (teaching at k-12 school) older students can create effective learning experiences for the younger students as they can empathize with them #tlap
A2: Lead Learners ready in the wings excited to share the love of learning! Their knowledge and energy speaks volumes to other grade levels. #BetterTogether#tlap
We have our 1st and 4th Graders in the same hallway to boost those interactions. Besides in the halls, sometimes 4th Graders run morning meeting in 1st Grade and we pair classes as reading buddies. We also use middle school Ss to volunteer at our events. #tlap
A2: I am mentoring a Ss senior project. We are working to create a better library for a local elementary school. As part of it we may create "podcasts" of older students reading books to help younger students learn to read. #tlap
A2: Tricky for me since I have either all sophomores or only Jrs and Srs. As a coach, we pair up the Srs with Freshmen for warmups so the big dogs can train the pups. :) Helps w/ team building. #tlap
#tlap A2 At my school we send our HS Ss who want to be teachers to our 6th grade campus, and even some 5th grade elementary classes to help teach low performing Ss. #ItWorks
Dang girl—that is a great question!
Ok...
A2 Create opportunities for Ss to Ss mentoring. AND make time for the little people to teach the bigs. We can learn a lot from 5year olds!
And they❤️to teach.😜
#tlap
A2: At a previous school I taught at we had “buddies.” Monthly we met for an activity and character ed lesson. Both the older and younger Ss were eager to hang out and learn together! #tlap
A2: My third grade students and their Kinder buddies meet every week. They do projects and read together. The third graders always remember and remind me when it is buddy time on Fridays! #tlap
A2 Right now my wife aka @TifaniF94 has stolen our class Monsters so we have 4th graders trying to convince preschoolers that the class mascots should be returned - it's been fun to see the interactions #tlaphttps://t.co/4fYRgB7xZZ@SMART_Tech ARR bring them back!
A2: I love seeing older Ss mentor younger Ss.
Every time I see @Joe_Sanfelippo share about the amazing connections the older students have with the younger kids in Fall Creek, I can’t help but wonder how we could all benefit from more connections like that. #GoCrickets#tlap
A2: I am mentoring a Ss senior project. We are working to create a better library for a local elementary school. As part of it we may create "podcasts" of older students reading books to help younger students learn to read. #tlap
#tlap#conversechat At my kid's school on challenge days, older students come into the lower grades to be book buddies or math tutors. It makes the Ss not in challenge feel important and valued
A2: At my school we have cross-age reading buddies, tech buddies, and dance buddies for our song first thing Monday morning. Our older Ss like being role models #tlap
A2 When I was in elem (some 30 years ago) we had high school students come be teachers aids in the afternoon every year. I know we all loved it. Not sure that is done much anymore #tlap
A2: One of my all-time favorite pictures, this former knitter chatting with third-grade Bailey about the bookmark the novice knitter made for her. A memory, a smile, a win-win! #tlap
My seventh and eighth grade students go into the elementary classrooms and serve as mentors during a non-academic block. Seeing an 8th grade ELL student working with a first grade ELL - Priceless. #tlap
A2 I teach a multilevel Spanish class, create opps for Ss to peer teach, also by connecting our class with Ss in Argentina and Spain, collaborate and learn about different cultures, we do this through #pbl too #tlap
Q3: Dogs live life in the moment, they stick their heads out the window and feel the wind. How can you and your students more fully immerse yourselves in the unfolding moments of your class? #tlap
A2: It's been said that we remember the most what we teach. Letting Ss teach other Ss, especially in cross-age partnerships, is a valuable opportunity that is underutilized. Collaborating with others is my Ss fav. Why not make it cross-age collaboration?! #TLAP
A2b: Our state does A+ tutoring where juniors and seniors are paired with elem and ms Ss for tutoring. They earn free credit hours at some state universities, & some are all tuition paid if A+ requirements are met. #tlap
I actually first got the idea from a very smart participant (@ebarnes73) in our Oklahoma ed twitter chat several weeks ago and loved it when I first heard it. #tlap#oklaed
A2 Great question. I used to teach Pre-K and we would have older "reading buddies". It was amazing to see the four year olds and the first graders boost each others' love of reading. #tlap
A2: We also have HS Ss come to all Gr4 classes in the district to teach lessons on kindness, friendship, etc as SODAs: Student Organization for Developing Attitudes. Many become teachers, like I did! #BestExperienceEver#tlap
A2: Buddy class! Every grade level pairs with another to do various activities throughout yr. 3rd and 1st did Halloween math games and did Halloween reads last gathering 😊 #tlap
A3: we had a full internetoitage we played trex and tried to beat each other’s scores for XP points and then built our own game controllers from #makeymakey#tlap
EDUs must give their students choices!! Give them choices and they GROW! I followed up on this in a recent blog at https://t.co/ecSBcWNolV check it out! #tlap
Q3: Dogs live life in the moment, they stick their heads out the window and feel the wind. How can you and your students more fully immerse yourselves in the unfolding moments of your class? #tlap
Q3: Dogs live life in the moment, they stick their heads out the window and feel the wind. How can you and your students more fully immerse yourselves in the unfolding moments of your class? #tlap
A3: I think being flexible & always getting input from learners & talking as a group rather than lecturing lets you explore life as it happens rather than sticking to a strict schedule #tlap
A3 Pause and reflect. Take a step back. Provide feedback to others. Could be using #edtech like #flipgrid or could be using a simple conversation with your neighbor... enjoy the successes and failures, breathe them in and savor the moment. #tlap
A3: It is always important to be flexible as to ensure that teachable moments are not lost due to other factors. Some of the best lessons are those that develop along the journey. #tlap
#tlap a3 My motto stay with the chaos for 10 min longer than you are comfortable, then that is when learning and magic begins. (pray admin doesnt walk in during the 10 min or chaos)
R3 Teachable moments are EVERYTHING. And although they may slow down my pace, they're always worth it I just try to remember the importance of those lessons rather than worry about not "covering" everything. #tlap
A3: As a history teacher I find myself chasing rabbits often. Sometimes I do it intentionally and relate it back to content. Sometimes I just let it go and run with it as a way to connect more with my Ss #tlap
Q3: Dogs live life in the moment, they stick their heads out the window and feel the wind. How can you and your students more fully immerse yourselves in the unfolding moments of your class? #tlap
A3: this is a hard one- many times Ss are all about checking the boxes instead of loving the learning - gotta help them find their passion & learn b/c of joy - live it & model it #tlap
A3: Don’t be afraid to be in the moment. I was observing a T and something funny happened. The teacher & class laughed for several minutes. Enjoy those moments WITH your Ss! #tlap
A3: Live in the #cultureofyes . Do not squelch potential greatness from happening because "it wasn't in the lesson plan." Encourage students to be innovative, creative and expressive. You never know what can come of it. #tlap
A3: I was watching "The Ron Clark Story", and he inspired me to have a family dynamic in the classroom. I want my students to be actively engaged. I use @nearpod a lot. #tlap
A3: This is the Pirate life! Where Passion is beyond the Ts and develops in the Ss... Voice and Choice-Genius Hour-Passion Projects! Take Risks- allow it to unfold! #growthmindset#tlap
A3 Allow for it create some unstructured time. Build it in and model it for students. Those times when we get "off track" and enjoy the moment are powerful learning opportunitues. #tlap
A3: Taking more time with tasks that require deeper thinking; I am often rushing to finish to keep up with content. Stop multitasking (ex: organzing supplies, checking emails) during class time. By modeling, hopefully students will follow. #tlap
A3: Remember first that students are kids. Allow them the chance to be kids. The places they can take you are places you could never plan for. Teach them how to wonder and lead, then let them wonder and lead. #tlap
A3: Be fully present for the students during the entire class. Show them that you want to learn from them and let them share their learning with you. #tlap
A3: Flexibility is key! Sometimes (read most times) Ss can lead you in a better direction for more authentic learning. Sometimes you all need a good brain break or laugh with your class. #kidsdeserveit#tlap
A3: Become one of them...make mistakes (real ones) and admit them, learn new things (from the kids), be proud (of your accomplishments and theirs) #tlap#323learns#dgsroyals
I can easily point to the relationships I have with former students and say those off topic conversations have had a lasting effect on both my students and myself. #tlap
A3: don't plan too far in advance! And don't always use the same things year to year. Kids interests, thoughts, learning styles change. Get those little (and big) minds involved...ALWAYS! #tlap
A3 Be present. I totally suck at multitasking anyway. But for REAL—our time is short. Just be in the moment and EXPERIENCE it. The Ss (and adults in our life) deserve it.
#tlap
A3: Yes we have programs. Yes we have canned curriculum. Yes we have mandates. AND... Yes we have the opportunity and the obligation to bring the OOMPH and the WOW to every lesson we teach #tlap
A3: Embrace the teachable moments! We ditched our planned writing lesson today bc the calendar reminded us it was #WorldKindnessDay. We created digital kindness reminders on iPads instead! #tlap
I love when students see me make a mistake. Nothing like showing them you are human too! It really breaks down the barriers of fear in the classroom. #tlap
A3: My students love to come up with more questions about things we are learning. Then, they do research on their questions during learning stations and share with their class via #googleclassroom or #seesaw#tlap
A3 This starts with a culture where students care more about what they think of themselves than what others think of them.... I make a fool of myself early and often to model this! 10 min into this school year! #tlap
#tlap#conversechat A3 I would like not 2 b as confind b standards & curriculum if genuine learning opportunity presented itself in class. I experienced this in my curric class last semester-How would you catch a squirrel? IDK let's try designing and making traps @JuliePJones
Q4: Dogs are highly intuitive. They can sense what's going on beneath the surface and feel people's energy. How can you as an educator tap into and improve your intuitive abilities? #tlap
Q4: Dogs are highly intuitive. They can sense what's going on beneath the surface and feel people's energy. How can you as an educator tap into and improve your intuitive abilities? #tlap
Make eye contact and say “hi” or “good morning” or “so glad you are here today” and speak in a tone that resonates happiness, excitement, and genuine interest. #tlap
A3 First word that comes to mind is WONDER. I tihink we can build a class culture where all get excited for the little discoveris that are made. Help each other see the amazing all around. #tlap
Q3: Dogs live life in the moment, they stick their heads out the window and feel the wind. How can you and your students more fully immerse yourselves in the unfolding moments of your class? #tlap
Honestly. As a student, I feel when my EDUs or admins are having a bad day or are dealing with stress!!! I can see it and feel it! Transparency is so important!! #tlap
Q4: Dogs are highly intuitive. They can sense what's going on beneath the surface and feel people's energy. How can you as an educator tap into and improve your intuitive abilities? #tlap
A4: Be a positive light in a world where Ss NEED it. Ss need to hear their glows. Don’t just continuously give feedback without giving them some confidence first. Make them feel loved in your presence. #tlap
A4: For me it is about getting to know my Ss and learn their cues. I try to read their faces and moods as they walk in, if something seems off I inquire. Even if it a positive "off" I inquire so I can cheer with them. #tlap
Q4: Dogs are highly intuitive. They can sense what's going on beneath the surface and feel people's energy. How can you as an educator tap into and improve your intuitive abilities? #tlap
What a cute picture!!! Sometimes, it's easier for a kid to understand something when it comes from another kid! Give the older S's the task of mentoring the younger ones... or have them teach a small group of younger students as a reward! Would be so awesome to watch! #tlap
A4 Know your students and the staff that you work around. Take the time to cultivate the culture around you and grow together. It's not an individual mountain. We're all in this together. #tlap
A4: When you get to know your Ss you can easily tell when they are off. Take moment to pull them aside and ask how they are doing...let them know you care & know them well enough to notice #tlap
A4 KNOW YOUR STUDENTS! Sorry, was I yellling. Build relationships. Its not in the grade book but rather the book they are reading or the music the listen too... or their proximity to others.... #tlap
A4: Being more mindful that my energy is contagious, whether it be positive or negative. I have the ability to set the tone in my building day in and day out. #tlap
A5 Talk to other people and LISTEN! If you ask for their feedback, particularly on something you find important, you can calibrate yourself with what is going on in reality. Don't let your mind and intuition become a personal sinkhole. Be positive! #tlap
A4 Reflect individually, w colleagues in/outside of grade/subject/school, and WITH STUDENTS! Check in w Ss: where do they want to go? What do they want to do? I can't & don't want to make every decision for them! #tlap
A4: By asking more questions and truly listening to the answers! The stronger the relationship, the stronger the intuition. Show everyone lots of kindness and a healthy dose of compassion! #tlap
Q4: Dogs are highly intuitive. They can sense what's going on beneath the surface and feel people's energy. How can you as an educator tap into and improve your intuitive abilities? #tlap
A3- don’t be so rigid. Let threnleaosn flow the way it needs to. Be willing to change the direction of your lesson at a moments notice if it’s best for kids. #tlap
A4: Being able to read body language and moods of students. This can tell you what you need to adjust to meet their needs. Don't be afraid to go off the plan book! #tlap
A4: I would like to think that the relationships I have built with students and staff alleviate the need for intuition (as much as possible). I hope my students feel comfortable being themselves and sharing with me. #tlap
A4: Get to know those you work with (staff, students)! By knowing what they are really about, you'll know if things are off or on! #tlap#323learns#dgsroyals
A4: Truly getting to know each student and connecting with them on a specific interest - asking them how they are doing and letting them know you care. #tlap
A4: You have to get to know your staff and students. It is all about building a relationship of trust, honesty and respect. Growing together you learn what makes your classroom work. Intuition will happen naturally after that. #tlap
A4 Be present! When you ask a S or T how they’re doing, mean it and listen to the answer. Know the people in your building and you’ll know what kind of day they’re having before they have a chance to answer. #tlap
A4: spidie sense is huge in a classroom- all about relationships, observations & listening to the Ss & your gut - how do we teach this to pre-service Ts? #tlap#k12ArtChat
A4: I think by building strong connections with your students you can sense when something is wrong or something isn’t clicking for them. Then, use what you know about them to help them emotionally or with learning connections. #tlap
A4: Build relationships with Ss! Get to know them and recognize their energy. Stay positive and stick with other positive Ts. The positivity is contagious! #tlap
#tlap A4: It’s all about getting to know your Ss. Don’t sit behind a desk; don’t lecture all the time. Let Ss take control & discuss their ideas while just listening to what they say.
Finding out that the S is having a worse day at home, it finally hits you why they are acting out, they wand some attention, #tlap or like a dog a scratch behind the ears.
A4: spidie sense is huge in a classroom- all about relationships, observations & listening to the Ss & your gut - how do we teach this to pre-service Ts? #tlap#k12ArtChat
❤️this Q, Ash. You’re a natural.
A4 Be more R.E.A.L.
It’s not about status or standards...we as EDUs must be...
Relatable
Expose a little vulnerability
Always Approachable &
Learning through life
...to truly connect. #tlap
A4 by observing, listening, connecting, it's more than just being present, we need to actively engage and make time to interact with Ss and peers, #tlap
#tlap A4 If you are POSTIVE with your Ss, your classroom will have a "positive aura". This is real, you can sense it when you enter the room. LOVE your Ss. This will create a dynamic energy in your room.
A4: If you aren't sure, ask, and continue to pay attention. If you are sure, take care of their needs, either privately or otherwise, depending on S and need. HS Ss sometimes just need a minute. #tlap
Yes! Or allowing them mental health days isn't the end or need for a bad grade, it may just be the beginning or heart tug they needed to smile, connect &/or perform #tlap
A4. Know your Ss. Building Rel. Talking w/ Ss. When talking w/ Ss, you can sense their feelings. Take the extra time to care and find out what's going on in their lives! #tlap
Q5: Dogs play every day. It is essential to their well-being. Guess what? The same is true for humans! How can you incorporate opportunities for fun into the school day? #tlap
A4: spidie sense is huge in a classroom- all about relationships, observations & listening to the Ss & your gut - how do we teach this to pre-service Ts? #tlap#k12ArtChat
Q5: Dogs play every day. It is essential to their well-being. Guess what? The same is true for humans! How can you incorporate opportunities for fun into the school day? #tlap
A4: My FAVORITE thing to do is turn the question around on them! Ask rhetorical questions, facilitate reflection, but don't give answers. It's okay for them to be a little "confused", guide them to do their own inquiry. #TLAP
A4: We need to get & stay connected. For me, it's being in classrooms & asking Ss how they feel about school, their classrooms, & how we can do better for them #tlap
A5: I wouldn’t necessary classify it as fun, but giving students more autonomy encourages them to relax and tackle challenges without the stresses of traditional “school”-like fear. #tlap
A5 I noticed this today at the middle school. It gets moved from mailbox to mailbox. Nobody comments on it, but you smile if you get it. Find others who you respect and enjoy their humor and company. #tlap
A5 The power of play is so important and needs to be incorporated into each and every day. You can sense when they need movement, so move with them do some exercises that get the blood pumping, #tlap Believe in Physical Education as an essential subject.
A5: consider what you’d want to do if you were in Ss shoes! Be imaginative and connect w/ them. Laugh, sing, play...whatever it takes! They’re worth it!!! #tlap
A5 set aside time for movement and for Ss to do more than just sit, play music, use games, small group activities, I like having Ss lead activities, Create lessons and work w/ peers , time to connect and higher engagement #tlap
A5: I push the boundaries often. Next Monday I am turning our high school the Silk Road and releasing my AP Ss to go on a trading adventure and see who survives and has resources to reach the end. #tlap
Q5: Dogs play every day. It is essential to their well-being. Guess what? The same is true for humans! How can you incorporate opportunities for fun into the school day? #tlap
A5: Let the kids see how FUN learning can be! Surprise them with music and dance for a song! Join in the board games for rainy recess days! Find creative ways to show them the fun of YOU! #tlap
Q5: Dogs play every day. It is essential to their well-being. Guess what? The same is true for humans! How can you incorporate opportunities for fun into the school day? #tlap
A5: We love #gonoodle! Brain breaks, engaging classroom activities, letting the Ss see you and your teaching partners laughing and smiling together, maybe schooling Ss in a game of jackpot at recess 😊#tlap
A5 (attempt #2) Students also like to hear stories about “middle school Mr. Julian” as the don’t believe me when I tell them I wasn’t the... best of students. #tlap
A5: Nobody could survive working out all the time. Your body would fail. It couldn’t handle it. In fact, the rest is where our muscles repair & we actually get stronger.💪🏻
So why don’t we give ourselves time to rest or play? We MUST build rest and play into our routines! #tlap
A5: How can we not? If you haven't incorporated it, Ss will spontaneously erupt with fun. Either roll with it and use it, or try to squash it and deal with lack of engagement. Personally, I always look for ways to bring in fun & hope Ss agree on my idea of fun. #tlap
A5 By knowing play is learning! Where did we get the idea that quiet rooms, still students, and formulaic instruction was good for anyone. Embrace the chaos :) I love the sounds of a playground. #tlap
A5: I don't take myself too seriously. I greet students in a British accent. We have 30 second dance parties. I tell ridiculous jokes over the morning announcements. I want school to be a fun place. I want students to feel at home. #tlap
A5: Fun is an important ingredient in the day. We must find ways to make learning fun and exciting using hooks and movement along with plain silliness #tlap
A5: “Create Experiences!...Life Changing Lessons!” This is when the fun simply cannot be contained! DANCE from desks- SING-RAP- let your Passion pour into your teaching! #tlap
A5: Adding in jokes when it relates to content. We really wanted to give our middle school a mock "recess" this year after lunch but it did not work with scheduling. They need a chance to get out some energy, socialize, and get active! #tlap

A5: Add silliness when possible. Today, creative writing with tenses and reflexive verbs Ss are learning. Zombis will attack you if u stink! You lived to tell what happened! #tlap
A5 Always time for fun. Turn up the music. Wear a costume or hat. Act it out.
BE the lesson.
Be like a pup--don't give a lick about what others think.
Non-silly people need to check their pulse. (I tell them that sometimes.) 😜 #tlap
R5 Sometimes we forget that our secondary learners are still kids at heart. Build in fun activities that teach while rekindling that childlike joy. My high school art students still finger paint while learning color theory. #tlap
A4 Such deep questions. Be transparent. If you’re tired, tell them. If you’re excited, tell them. If you model that vulnerability you may inspire them to really be open to taking risks. #tlap

#tlap a6 students and parents talk to each other tell your story, beat your drum, you tell it better than anyone else make it accessible to them on their phones
A6: Find your leaders and capitalize on their strengths. Each member of your school community has unique talents. Find them and utilize them. Work together toward a common goal. #tlap
A6 Common Planning Time is key to grade level collab & Instructional Rounds have really opened our classroom doors and started conversations across grade levels. Working on a pineapple calendar now so Ts take chances to invite colleagues in! #tlap
A6: Create a classroom theme and get kids to think as a group and not just individuals in the same room. Do all the things mentioned tonight! #323learns#dgsroyals#tlap

A6 Make time to be REAL with those around you. It's key.
Be mirror holders. Let others see their reflection but tell them what we see--their awesomeness. #tlap
And now we feel like we aren't doing the new limit justice if we don't get at least a little close to the 280 limit, even though @alicekeeler says she'll block wordy people...#tlap
A6:) Allow some students to work together to solve a problem of one of the others. One of ours is designing a swing for just this purpose. #helpingothers#tlap
#tlap#conversechat Know your Ss. Then you will know when they are off. If you don't take the time to get to know about their life outside the CR you never get to really know them as people

A6: Teachers and students need to remember that we are on the same team, and we are CHASING THE SAME GOAL! Keep improving and keep LEARNING! Provide LOTS of opportunities and mediums to share! #TLAP
OHHHH! I need to try this. We have about 20 minutes after centers before dismissal, where I've read but they're usually to antsy to stay focused. This may be the cure to some of my struggles! Thanks for sharing! #tlap
A6: I think Ts need to remember to play together and have fun too! Playing builds a stronger team and allows everyone to see each other strenths and talents. #tlap
A7 Sense of independence, self worth, ability to leap onto tables in a single bound, and of course to use the litterbox for those days when preps never come! #tlap

A7: Cats are animals that can sit back and observe. I need to be better at giving my Ss the opportunity to lead while I observe and help as needed. Cats also do what they want, I need to take that mentality into always doing what my kiddos deserve. #tlap
A7: YES! Oh that sneaky cat chiming in at the end! Be observant. Be deliberate. But most of all remember YOU ARE THE CAT! Your attitude rules the roost! #tlap
A7 Empower others to be independent thinkers/doers.
Don't take "stuff" personal.
Do what you KNOW to do.
Realize when you need a little "petting" time.
#tlap

9 lives... no matter how many times an idea doesn’t work, you don’t reach the Ss or Ts like you thought you would or you just get knocked down, approach every challenge with the same zeal as the previous one #tlap
THE MYTH: It takes a huge, grand gesture to make memorable connections with students.
