Happy New Year and welcome to #ATchat! Tonight’s topic is about sharing what lies ahead for us professionally. Let’s share ideas and discuss; it’s how we can motivate each other to greatness for our students!
Hey now #Atchat Happy New Year! Looking forward to another year of learning from our amazing community #OurPLNRocks [GIF: Happy New Year Flashing Disco Ball!]
Thanks for joining us again. Would love to schedule a time you would be willing to host an #ATchat. Would love to hear the questions you might post for our group!
Mine consisted of the last couple of nights being my dog's pillow as she does not enjoy fireworks and thinks that sleeping on my chest head and neck is the best cure #ATchat so glad that's done.
Question 1: my #oneword2019 is DO. As in Just Do It. So many things that I’ve waiting and said “someday”. This year, someday is now. Time to DO! #atchat
Hi all- Vicki in Memphis with a tired brain after doing a 5.5 hour AAC professional development for the local school district SLPs. An abrupt end to my vacation but a great opportunity. #Atchat
So far, interesting collection of #onewords - passion, passionate, imagine, authenticity, reflection, Do, holistic, collaboration and growth. Any others? #ATchat
A2: A work goal that I have is to share my learning with others. I had the privilege of attending #ISTE18 and #MathPlus2018 last summer and want to share my new knowledge with colleagues. I am presenting at "Lunch and Learn" and after-school PD meetings. #ATChat@drmcclard
A2: finding the best way to share my knowledge with as many people as possible and growing my pln. Considering restarting my blog, any advice or tips on blogging would be much appreciated #atchat
Q2: Working smarter, not harder. MAking it happen by keeping a closer watch on time (Ha!Punny!) and saving things that i wrote over and over again for reuse rather than rewrite. #atchat
A2 - My goal is to start writing again. I have written at least 100 blog posts in my head that never made it to my blog. I hope to at least blog monthly. Here's the one I wrote for December entitled, Just Because.... #ATchathttps://t.co/rsPeEkMkqy
a2 uh i can't work, but if i interpret the question broadly i could say, i want to keep up my blog about aac/disability/etc posting once/week (https://t.co/FMvvZeu7LP if you're looking for something to read) #ATchat
That's great. I started writing my blog in 2005 and have kind of stopped writing. I hope to write monthly again. Awesome that you are trying for weekly. #ATchat
Do you want to take a deep dive into Google Chrome supports for ALL Learners? Join me for 2 days of Googley Goodness at #ATIA19https://t.co/tBRAV7LliS#ATchat
A-2 Trying to see beyond the obvious. There are so many psychosocial aspects to assistive technology that I don’t feel like I have fully explored with teams. This means more time in more environments #ATchat
A2: I’m having trouble condensing this to a word, but my 2 (somewhat related goals) are to continue to build on my cultural awareness with regards to AAC & to amplify the voices of people who use AAC, particularly with SLPs. #Atchat
Q2. My goal would be to be more effective in all aspects of my work. Especially when it comes to getting the world of adult services to see communication as a right for adults with ID. #ATChat

A2 build capacity and awareness in Oklahoma. To many good teachers have left the profession that last few years and it has left a void in AT too. #atchat
One of my university department’s goals is about diversity & I read the Ijeoma Oluo book “so you want to talk about race,” which has really pushed me to think more deeply on this. #ATchat
I am still haunted by Marcia Scherer’s Living in a State of Stuck. We want so badly to help and to problem solve, but there is more to AT than the “T”. #ATchat
Question 3: I am super excited to start working with teachers on using Google Slides and Drawings to modify worksheets and digital tasks for our students! #atchat
A3 next week I launch a district core vocabulary increased access to communication strategies multifaceted training program thru an online course and coaching and mentoring follow up. #atchat#overwhelmed#scared
A3 we have made UDL our school-wide professional learning focus this year. I’m excited bc it is helping me look at UDL through a different lens #ATchat
Question 3: I am super excited to start working with teachers on using Google Slides and Drawings to modify worksheets and digital tasks for our students! #atchat
Q3: Becoming fluent at captioning videos. Probably won't be able to measure impact on students, but I know it is the right thing to do. I am currently a baby at it, sitting at the feet of the master, my fellow CASTaway, Luis Perez. #atchat

A3: I want to have a comprehensive understanding of the brain and #dyslexia & facilitate implementation of more hands-on multisensory reading strategies...while at the same time continuing trainings of AT accommodations #ATchat The impact will be seen in improved reading
#atchat Can't really say I am excited to be doing it, but I will be writing something about the SETT Framework... like a book or a reader or something substantial. That's also part of working smarter, no harder.
Have to start somewhere. Help them question the box (status quo) and then go from there! Ask them if there current instructional methods reach all their learners. When we reflect on that question, we have to think differently. #ATchat
Agreed! There are so many more options. But I am realistic what my teachers are doing regardless of best practice so we are taking baby steps to get them thinking outside the box
Through the eyes of an administrator, how to build a PLC with a UDL focus and help our mostly gen ed teachers see how it aligns w the work they already do #atchat
A3: I want to have a comprehensive understanding of the brain and #dyslexia & facilitate implementation of more hands-on multisensory reading strategies...while at the same time continuing trainings of AT accommodations #ATchat The impact will be seen in improved reading
I agree. And our sped teachers really seem to be starting to get it. And some of or Reg Ed too. But there are those that I can’t get moved yet. I’m hoping the more engagement they see with different methods that they view as “safer” will make them start to branch out
Q4: Stretch on a replacement, but I am working toward replacing flights with more virtual ways to be present around the country and the world! No always, but more often! #ATchat
I’ll probably have a 100 questions in the next months for my #atchat friends. It is way ambitious but important and waiting until fall seemed nonsensical. Starting a pilot of interested folks now.
A-4 not exactly replacing, but I want to do a better job a feature matching. Evolving from tools I know to tools I am less familiar with but may be a better match. #ATchat
A3: Excited to learn more math fact fluency strategies at our PD day on Friday. This is one area that my 2nd grade students really struggle with. They know the process of multi-digit addition/subtraction, but just getting their basic computation accurate is a struggle. #atchat
Well, since we are focusing a lot on the wonderful opportunities at ATIA, come spend a couple of precon days digging into the SETT Framework with me, along with Diana Carl, Joan Breslin-Larson and get an Aussie take on it from LEanne Woodley. #ATchat
oh, good framing! can't think of at related stuff, but just generally the expectations that everyone should have to do everything regardless of abilities/interests
i was much more interested in reading than recess/p.e./socialization but was always pushed into the latter #ATchat
I need to put some thought into this, too. We have a grant to build AAC capacity in western Tennessee, which is a large territory with minimal public transit. Working smarter would be minimizing travel. #ATChat
A-4 not exactly replacing, but I want to do a better job a feature matching. Evolving from tools I know to tools I am less familiar with but may be a better match. #ATchat
It was quite a topic yesterday on Twitter. Great way to start the new year! I probably tweeted more (and about as poorly as possible!) yesterday than the whole of my previous tweets! #atchat
A5: I will be focusing on exploring more training on AAC. Feels like I know just enough to be dangerous!! Want to be more knowledgeable. Will be leaning on my #ATchat family for resources
A4: Not really "replacing", but I've really focused on improving my questioning skills with students to encourage higher levels of thinking in the classroom. #atchat
A4 want to end the discussion that audio support for reading is cheating or not a way of achieving literacy. I would not achieve what I have without it and hate my students still hear it. #atchat
A5: This year I want to focus on learning more about areas of Assistive Technology which I am blot familiar with such as AAC and activities for daily living as well as AT for employment. I had the privilege of trying out the obi feeding robot. #atchat
A5: cont: this de ice allows those unable to feed themselves independently to choose from 4 options by using one switch to choose and another to confirm and have the spoon guided to those mouths. #atchathttps://t.co/NZz28hVZXg
A4: Constantly changing tools when they seem less accessible for specific Ss. Evolving in your practice keeps you on that constant rotation because as we know one size does not fit all. #ATchat
a5 i want to learn more about scanning aac on switches, which one of the ppl at my aac social group uses single switch scanning so i am hopeful i will learn from them #ATchat
Q4 - I want to remove barriers within the process and replace with quality time with students and teams to problem-solve. Build capacity and culture that keeps trying and always reflects and adjusts to ever-changing students. #ATchat
Excellent goal, Judith! I am beginning to feel almost tool illiterate! Too much time in the policy world! Hard for the girl who used to spend all her time with the kids on the floor. #atchat
A5: I am interested in learning more about the AT available for struggling writers. As a 2nd grade teacher, I work with many different levels of writers and want to help each student have what they need to be successful. #atchat
A5: More focus on DATA collection! #Atchat We NEED more data or we are going to keep hearing that AT accommodations are "cheating" or "auditory readers" aren't reading by themselves. I am doing a session at #ATIA19 titled "I repeat, It's not cheating" 2 have those convos. Join me
A7: Trying to get back into reading--both for professional and personal enjoyment. While I have seen/read blogs of @PintoBeanz11's work, I haven't read her book "Google Apps for Littles" yet. #atchat
A5: I’ve been intending to explore this for a while, but maybe this year I’ll get to delve into visual scenes for AAC. There’s a fair amount of positive research on it but I’ve not spent much time with them. #Atchat
I feel the same. I have become bombarded by all the new bells and whistles That I am sometimes forgetting about the whole continuum. We need to come full circle, don’t we? We belong back on the floor! In a good way! #ATchat
Q5 Exploring ways to increase understanding of the balance between remediation and compensation and make good decisions that are useful for students now and in the future. #ATchat
And at the high school level, I've found going back to basics means showing students how their smartphones can be tools for learning. They know Snapchat, Youtube and Instagram but nothing for learning. #ATchat

a6 at users! as guests but also integrating us into regular chats by doing outreach and tailoring topics and questions to include us, so it's not just pros in an echo chamber, no offense :)
it's just weird to have an #ATchat that doesn't usually have actual at users, you know?
I got to give a little AT lesson on my Facebook page when I posted a photo of my new tea steeper/cup that was too got to hold until the tea cooled a little. Least complex solution - a tennis wristband slipped over the lower part of the vessel! Perfect! #ATchat
We greatly appreciate your perspective. How can we get more AT/AAC users voices? And some of us use AT or have family members who rely on it, even if we also work in the field. #ATchat

Question 6: I would love to see more conversation about the connection between lack of independence and behavior/emotions. And following that how AT can support this. #atchat
A5: I need to learn how to train/coach middle/high teachers in AAC because I’m struggling with getting systems in place for older students that have come with nothing. Teachers are overwhelmed with modeling and integrating. This is a major need that I need to address. #ATchat
I’ve already read this, a couple times, but for those who haven’t, Made to Stick is a kindle daily deal for $1.99 today & it has lots of thoughtful things to say about training adults. #ATChat
true, i hope there are, people shouldn't feel pressure to disclose!
but there are also a ton of "out" user advocates that could be adding perspectives that are transparently from the user pov so they are recognizable as lived experience if that makes sense #ATchat
Just thanks, once again for all the work that you two - Karen and Mike - put into making these events so interesting and informative for the rest of us. I am grateful. #ATchat
