Hi Carrie... HAPPY NEW YEAR... and when are you coming back to Prince George? Can't wait to see you at @EdCampBCCC in a couple of weeks. Good to see you at #bcedchat
Hi. D'Alice from #sd40learns. Teaching MidSch Gr8 English & Socials. Will be in and out as I'm dealing with bedtime and figuring out what I'm teaching tomorrow. #bcedchat
Hi April. I missed you this winter break. Time is flying by so fast. I can't even imagine a Manitoba winter. I am so coastal. Welcome to #bcedchat and HAPPY NEW YEAR.
A1 My new years resolution was to take what comes this year and celebrate it. My word is embrace as I need to embrace all my good and bad that comes this year and see the greatness I gain from each #bcedchat
A1: My #oneword2019 & my resolution are the same #balance. Being on the road so much, I need to remember to take time for me & balance work with fun. I have been doing much better since Nov & hope to continue. Like taking extra travel time to enjoy where I am visiting! #bcedchat
A1 I don't want to call it a resolution...but I want to take care of me more this year. Being a mom and an educator often doesn't leave time for us...perhaps my #oneword should be #balance#bcedchat
A1. My last resolution was to not make resolutions and it is the only one I ever kept. 😀 I think the one word would be wellness; both for self and others. #bcedchat
I am Mia Moutray from Nechako Lakes. I teach grade 8s and my areas of interest are many: science, literacy, Indigenous knowings and beings, inclusion, land- based learning... ✨🌟#bcedchat

A1. My #oneword isn't changing. It's the one I've been hanging onto since September. "SIMPLE!" It helps me keep everything in balance. Helps keep my life decluttered. #bcedchat
Q1: A1: Health I often go through ups and downs of taking good care of myself and not, it is hard to stay motivated. This year it's a priority--- the whole year! #selfcare#bcedchat
#bcedchat my #oneword this year is Mindful. I think it will help me in my personal and professional life - and I am trying to do new things - including a video format share T3D (technolandys three things) todays 3 are on regulation tools:

A1 Finally figured out my #ONEWORD - INVEST. Invest in people as they're your greatest resource. Invest in myself and enjoy the quiet moments. #bcedchat
A1. My last resolution was to not make resolutions and it is the only one I ever kept. 😀 I think the one word would be wellness; both for self and others. #bcedchat
A2. Easy to say, hard to do...make time for myself. Carve out a little more time to hang out at home without school work staring at me, make time to go out with friends, etc. #bcedchat
Today I went to yoga before taking the ferry! I was so happy to make that work! :) I'm lucky I love what I do and work with fantastic people, makes it easier to find balance. #bcedchat
If you do... I'm going to force you to the #bcedchat LIVE event, then give me a ride home. LOL. Did I say force? I meant, strongly encourage. LOL. Let me know on the day. Ok?

A2: Make exercise and healthy eating a priority. Continue to go for a walk at lunch time and to not worry about things in my job that totally annoy me. #bcedchat

A2: I am going to finish my Masters in Educational Leadership and be super proud of myself for doing so! 😄 Finding balance has been tricky this year between my schooling, work & family. It makes every moment spent on each more precious. #bcedchat
A2 I am going to continue my focus on mental health with the students. It is good for them and good for me too because I participate with them. #bcedchat
A2: I am going to reduce anxiety, worry and feelings of “not doing enough” and take care of myself. This means for example, positive self talk, a quiet morning routine, walking and skiing in nature in evenings and just take moments when possible to sit and be quiet. #bcedchat
A1 Finally figured out my #ONEWORD - INVEST. Invest in people as they're your greatest resource. Invest in myself and enjoy the quiet moments. #bcedchat
A2: I am trying to be more active- sometimes that means traveling w/ more stuff, but taking advantage of the gym or pool at hotels, hiking, walking & visiting new places will help keep my mind & body healthy! But also being kind to myself & noticing when I need a break. #bcedchat
A2 going to up my step count and ensure my office goes through a reno (I inherited a nice L shaped desk, but it takes up so much space and I end up cluttering it...) #bcedchat
A2. Hello #bcedchat! I've been taking care of myself this vacation by not doing too much social media! We'll see if that continues once we're back to work!
A3. I saw the progress when I focused on wellness and a wholistic approach for the students, so I decided to listen to myself. No more "take my advice, I am not using it" like I did in the past. #bcedchat
Q3: A3: I am getting older, but still young! I need to nourish myself, and not beat myself up when I don't. Our bodies are meant to move. I want to be healthy. Even if I get un motivated I want and need to be healthy for me, and for those around me #bcedchat
A2: Trying not to fill up my calendar. Not feeling bad for saying no when I know it'll be too much. And not feeling guilty for watching a movie and drinking hot chocolate instead of going on a hike. Really working on that balance! #bcedchat
A3 I recently had to buy some new pants (smaller ones) and want to make sure I don’t slip back into bad habits and need them out of storage! (Also my dad passed of a heart attach at age 48....too close for comfort) #bcedchat
A3: I tend to do, do, do and not let myself “be”. I truly believe that slowing down will make me a much better, more loving and compassionate human being and educator. More pausing = more presence. #bcedchat
I've worked a lot on saying "no" this year. I think I was able to justify it to myself with having a couple of new roles, new school, new grade, new subjects. So I decided with everything being new this was the perfect time for me to start saying "no." #bcedchat
A3: After my concussion, I realized that I wasn't taking care of myself - I was heading to burnout for multiple reasons. Now I never feel bad about saying no to that extra workshop or asking for help at work. I do a lot, but I do what I can and not more. #bcedchat
A3: I enjoy keeping busy and exercising my mind & spirit. Doing graduate work may not appear to be "wellness" at first glance, but for me it is something I am doing for myself. It feels good and I am learning a lot about myself in the process. 😊 #bcedchat
It always surprises me that, after all we know about mental and physical health, we still feel bad saying no, even when we know it is what is best for us. I'm happy you are getting better with it! #bcedchat
A2: Eat more vegetables. Even if they're fried. Started Christmas Eve with a fried riced cauliflower and some low carb rolls to go with the sushi rolls.
A3: My friend came over & he is watching carbs. #bcedchat
Agreed. Are you going to the @EdCampBCCC in Richmond in a couple of weeks or the #bcedchat LIVE event that follows it? Maybe we can connect then. If not, then it must be an edu-conference in Vegas or something like that.
I know right?! I really started out having to justify it to myself. But now, I feel great in saying "no." I mean it still feels weird, but I know it's for my sanity and my wellbeing and it helps keep my relationships healthy. #bcedchat
A4: I didn't have one that worked! They say everything happens for a reason - my battle with #postconcussionsyndrome really taught me so much about myself & the importance of wellness. I am so much happier now that I was before! #bcedchat
A4 The most effective thing I have done over the past years is to finally properly deal with some traumas of my youth. I had to subdue the past to build the future. #bcedchat
Hi Howard. Welcome back to #bcedchat and HAPPY NEW YEAR. Good for you on eating more vegetables. How was the cauliflower fried rice. I've always wondered about that. Is it good? Did you notice it's not rice?
A2: Eat more vegetables. Even if they're fried. Started Christmas Eve with a fried riced cauliflower and some low carb rolls to go with the sushi rolls.
A3: My friend came over & he is watching carbs. #bcedchat
A4. I used to keep a gratitude journal. Each day I'd write what I was grateful for that day. It helped me realize that the simple pleasure of having time to drink a coffee in quiet can restore balance for the rest of the day. #bcedchat
A4: Definitely spending time in nature (I walk my dog often after school or at night) as well as keeping physically fit. Having leisure time with my partner or other friends where I can just “be me” helps to relieve pressure I put on myself. Treating myself helps too #bcedchat
A4. I do well when I have external accountability. Last year I signed up for a run clinic; this year I signed up for a regular fitness class at the gym. I hate to waste $$, so I go! #bcedchat
I totally understand that! I loved every minute of my Masters and miss it(but not enough to do a PhD). I often do online courses to give me that feeling again. #bcedchat
A4. I'd also schedule regular "meetings" with friends, date night etc. To know there is was scheduled I made sure not to have anything else conflict with that time and I wouldn't feel guilty for not doing school work. #bcedchat
A4: I didn't have one that worked! They say everything happens for a reason - my battle with #postconcussionsyndrome really taught me so much about myself & the importance of wellness. I am so much happier now that I was before! #bcedchat
I just uploaded the newest iOS on my iPhone & it prompted me to set a social media / app time limit. It is amazing how much more I get done with a reminder to put my phone down! I didn't realize before how much time I was spending online. #bcedchat
A5: Too many things I thought I needed to do in order to feel better. For example, “the list” that spelled out all the things I SHOULD be doing each day. It became another “to do” that stressed me out. Whew!!! 😬#bcedchat
Do you still eat sugar? Is it in moderation? That would be a tough one. I've heard that some do it as part of a cleansing routine. What do you do? #bcedchat
It's one of the reasons I was so easy to convince to start @EdCampBCCC with @jnovakowski38 ! Setting up professional development for others is an entirely different level of mental work. #bcedchat

A3: I decided to go for a walk at lunch because it makes me happier in my job. So many small things annoy me at work that I have realized that they are sooo small that they shouldn't takeaway from the love I have for this profession! #bcedchat.
A5:I hesitate to say this, but I find the whole bit about "mindfulness" is a strategy that doesn't work for me. Sometimes to feel "weller" i need distractedness #bcedchat
A5: Not having a strategy! I have a day planner now that I can see my week in advance - I make sure I have at least one weeknight and one weekend day free / for me. It doesn't sound like much, but before I could work 11 days straight and never take time for me! #bcedchat
A5: Trying to aim for balance. I have taught long enough to realize that there is an ebb and flow to this job. Sometimes it means really long hours, sometimes it doesn't. #bcedchat
That’s the fun part about mindfulness: I’ve said this: sometimes the chaotic brain needs a distraction to get focused
(And once tool doesn’t fit all)
#bcedchat
I am really bad at going to the gym - but realized I am really good at walking and hiking and being outdoors. I am trying to work that in more. Bonus, I can do it on the road :) #bcedchat
OMG. You make me giggle. A very good point though. It's always good to have a plan. As part of my #oneword2019 WRITE, it's also includes writing out my week, as you have mentioned. Good call... find that white time. #bcedchat

A6 I find students respond better if you walk the walk and not just talk the talk. Most of our alternate students need to learn how to improve their wellness too and they are more apt to try if they see staff trying too. #bcedchat
A5: Trying to aim for balance. I have taught long enough to realize that there is an ebb and flow to this job. Sometimes it means really long hours, sometimes it doesn't. #bcedchat
A6 been a lot of back & forth in the twitterverse about being happy with your job and being tired (or excited about a break) my bias is that teacher wellness is akin to a teeter tottter - not always in perfect balance, but looks great when it is! #bcedchat
So true. Being an educator means that the work is limitless and you can ever quite perfect it. it can easily lead to burn out. We need to strive while being kind to ourselves. #bcedchat
A6: It's important because we are so good at thinking about others, that we sometimes forget to think about ourselves. Strategy implies that thought has gone into it - we need to be mindful about our wellness. #bcedchat
"One cannot pour from an empty cup"
Until passion and fortitude surpass compacicity and volume... leadership MUST be concerned with personal wellness to combat burnout and attrition.
#bcedchat
Q6: Educators need to stay well and care for ourselves to be able to give to and care for others. We need to put our own seatbelts on first... #bcedchat
Classic for those in caring professions... but you do need to take care of yourself to take care of others. This is where the balance may come from. #bcedchat

A7. My goal is to maintain a new level of stress reduction and to keep work at work as much as possible. Allowing me the time to be the best me, the best mom, the best wife, and the best teacher I can be. #bcedchat
Exactly, though it was my sponsor teacher Donna, who was always shooing me out the door and telling me to find balance in my life. I won’t age myself and tell you how long ago that was😊#bcedchat
Isn't this all about stress management? Wellness needs to marry with the work that educators do. That's when can be the best to the people we serve. #bcedchat

A8: I think that it is important to have people to check in on you. I am putting it out there, feel free to check in with me on how my battle with balance is going through the year! I need more people keeping me accountable - in a supportive non-judgmental way! #bcedchat
BINGO. Teaching can be one of the most isolating professions even though we work with so many people. We all need at least one or two people who have our back and to check in on us... just because. #bcedchat

Awesome. Thank you Liz for the feedback. Much appreciated. Hope all is well with you. Great to see you at #bcedchat and HAPPY NEW YEAR. I hope you had a restful winter break and ready to be back in school tomorrow.... with wellness strategies in hand.
It is. And it goes back to my keeping it "simple." Not spending days and hours on end lesson planning and marking. Only to then spend equal amounts of time on myself, letting all the school work build up again. And hitting the repeat button. All about "simple." #bcedchat
Oh, I’m reading that one too. We’ve got a book club going in Delta thanks to @bmooreintheloop. It’s taking me so long to read it because I keep reflecting on my actions & words. Such a powerful book to help me be a better person in work and life. #bcedchat
Our time has whizzed on by. So many ideas and heartfelt comments to ponder. Archive #wakelet soon to come - if you've missed anything or are wanting to review. #bcedchat
