#fcpslearn is a weekly chat about teaching and learning. Our focus is on creativity, innovation and inspiration. We discuss a range of educational topics that range from technology integration to the Olympics.
Welcome to #fcpslearn. Thank you for taking time out of your night to join us for our discussion about courage. Please introduce yourself, your location, your role in education and tag a friend.
Intro: Hi all! I'm Jenn Rowan from Winchester, VA and I am an Instructional Technology Coach in elementary and alternative locations in K-12! Excited to learn with everyone! #fcpslearn
A1: I think sometimes being overwhelmed by the amount of work that goes into some of these risks keeps me cautious from trying something new. #fcpslearn
A1: Me. I try too hard at times to be perfect. I know that I will fall short, but sometimes that fear short circuits any progress toward new goals. You don't even know how many times I have talked myself out of amazing opportunities because of fear. #fcpslearn
A1 #fcpslearn
I want to be viewed as a team player, but sometimes my views just don't align with others. Gotta push through that and go with my gut of what I think is right
A1 It's def out of my comfort zone to take risks. It would be so much easier just doing the same thing year after year. But, my kids (and I) deserve so much more! Thankfully, my 20 years at an inquiry school pushes me daily to stretch myself, grow & change. #fcpsLearn
A1: Taking risks to spark innovation and bring relevant learning to students and intentional versus taking risks just to take risks with little or no thought behind purpose. #fcpslearn
A2: Taking risks to spark innovation and bring relevant learning to students and intentional versus taking risks just to take risks with little or no thought behind purpose. #fcpslearn
A2: Is it best for kids? Is it something that is going to rock the "status quo" in education? These are the two guiding questions that I like to ask before pressing boundaries. If our passion is provide a better version of school, we must be willing to risk. #fcpslearn
A2 "What's best for my kids? What's best for my kids?"
When I can answer that question, I can move forward to doing what I believe will benefit them most. Good risks benefit kids. #fcpsLearn
A2 Risk taking in the form of innovation I have no problem with if it is good for students. Risk taking with no apparent benefit to students isn’t worth the time #fcpslearn
Hi all! Kristen here! I teach 6th grade science. I am moderating my very first chat after this on Thriving instead of surviving. Come join us! Talk about courage and risk taking!! 😬
A3: My wife is my rock and supports/pushes me to grow. @ERobbPrincipal@MrPStrunk continuously up their game and push me to take risks to do the same! So many others do so as well!
#fcpslearn
A3: Our squad. @khoggardGRT, @CristinaDajero, @MrPStrunk, and @megan_hacholski. They re-frame situations and hear me out when I am offline. They have the power to calm storms and change the future. Beyond grateful for their voice in my life. #fcpslearn
A3: there’s an Art tt at my school eho came to me years ago and begged to work with me. I didn’t understand what she could offer me. Then she asked to do Rube Goldberg machines and I agreed. Changed my life. love telling the whole story about how she’s changed me. #fcpslearn
A1: sometimes the fear of a false start tearing away credibility and/or buy-in. Especially when the risk is about something important to school culture. #fcpslearn
Absolutely! I'm happy to say I haven't done the same thing for the last 20 years! I know the engagements I love - and attempt to do. But, each class is different and definitely needs/wants different things. #fcpsLearn
A4: To help others find their courage -- we have to give them time, resources, help with developing an objective, care, and a listening ear. Build each other up! #fcpslearn
A4: Be a positive role model for them. Told @mdeegan122 last year: "If our Ss see US Stepping out of our comfort zones, they will be more likely to do the same." Same goes for our colleagues. We just need to be there to hold their hand in the process. #fcpslearn
A4: Offer support. It's always nice when you have someone to come alongside you when you take a risk. Guys like @PHausEDU have helped me frequently with risks: Apps Day, Conference Presentations, Team Meetings, etc. #fcpslearn
A2: I tell my ss. Ss need to have a purpose and be safe in each of their decisions. Don’t care what the purpose is, but there must be a purpose. If you don’t have those 2 in your mind, it’s not good risk taking. #fcpslearn
A1 I definitely think one the biggest things I let get in the way of taking risks is doubting myself. I put way too much pressure on being perfect instead of taking that leap into the unknown. #fcpslearn
A4 Be supportive & encouraging.
Coach in other classes & offer any powerful engagement ideas I have.
Be a listener - and be around after the engagements transpire to serve as a sounding board. #fcpsLearn
A5: Music. I live in a house full of musicians, but I do not play any instruments. I have a teacher on staff that has offered to teach me bass so I can play songs with my own kids. Pretty stoked about this opportunity. Trying to push back fear of failure. #fcpslearn
A5: Code my own merge cube! I have a push but I need help! @cospaces_edu Can you put together a training course? Need some PD! Anyone else in the chat know how? I've watched the YouTube videos and they do help too. #fcpslearn
A5: I am interesting is learning the ins and outs of Google Sheets and blogging more... Both goals that come to the forefront after grad school ends in May!
#fcpslearn
A5: Huh... I can't think of anything that I won't try. I've grown crazy amounts in the past year in my risk taking and am not afraid of failing... anymore.
Don't like to make mistakes, but not afraid to try new things. #fcpslearn
A5 I can’t think of something I need a push to do. I’ve tried all the things I wanted to but I’m still working on being comfortable with these risks 😀 #fcpslearn
Thank you for a great discussion tonight about courage and risk-taking. I hope that you take a few moments to think about ways that you can take calculated risks to help boost innovation. See you next week!! #fcpslearn
A5 A close colleague and I are revamping our student-led conference planning template for kindergartners. It's time to listen deeply and think a bit differently abt what our K's might want to do for (and with) their parents. #fcpsLearn
