Hi everyone! Kristen Shannon from the NEA Foundation here. Tweeting from Boston --- excited for the @ASCD Global Leadership Summit tomorrow! #GlobalEdChat
Ariel Tichnor-Wagner, Senior Fellow of Global Competence at @ASCD! Also tweeting from Boston in advance of #Empower18 and the Global Leadership Summit tomorrow with @globaledcon#Globaledchat
Busy evening w/VEA Conference call about preparing for T eval and leadership! Great things are in the mix in @VEA4Kids ! #GlobalEdChat Hope you are loving Boston!!
Me too! It’s gotten way harder to make US events, but I’ll make it back for @iEARNUSA in July, at least! Did you know ex-pats can only be in the US 35 days or less during one calendar year or we owe taxes on everything made outside the country?! #globaledchat#expatlife
In reply to
@hsingmaster, @globaledguide, @iEARNUSA
Hello! I am Ligaya. I work in the #GlobalEd field supporting virtual & physical exchanges. I mostly work on an outbound language program for U.S. youths. Joining from NJ. #GlobalEdChat
I'm Rachel Manley, Program Manager at @iEARNUSA. I am currently in Boston getting ready for the Global Leadership Summit tomorrow! #globaled18#GlobalEdChat
A1 Teacher leaders are part of a shared leadership model typically. They've been empowered to inspire others in and outside of their buildings! #globaledchat#globaled18#Empower18
A1) Always learning and growing, and modeling it. Connected to other thought leaders. Leading on behalf of children in and out of school. #GlobalEdChat
A1: Teacher leaders work from a place of deep passion and infect everyone around them with that passion. They naturally foster the skills of their colleagues as much as their kids, and they reach beyond the walls of their classrooms for rich #globaled experiences. #globaledchat
A1: Someone who is willing to take risks, share best practices and knows that support, Celebration and people feeling valued is imperative to success. #globaledchat
A1: Teacher leaders are risk takers who are willing to put themselves out there even when they are surrounded by naysayers. They are committed and passionate teachers who want the best for their students and the profession. #globaledchat
A1 - 6 or 7 years ago, a friend shared a book with me about the Five Characteristics of Exemplary leadership model that profoundly resonated: 1) Model the Way 2) Inspire a Shared Vision 3) Challenge the Process 4) Enable Others to Act 5) Encourage the Heart. #GlobalEdChat
A1: I agree that a teacher leader needs to have an open mind and a willingness to seek information to inform both their faculty and professional learning community.
#GlobalEdChat
#globaledchat A1 - Being an example in front of and outside of the classroom. Practicing what you preach by challenging yourself to do more and be as involved as you expect your students/coworkers/community to be.
Agreed—at its best, it’s a deeply collaborative experience to lead. We are currently using visits to colleagues’ classrooms as a means of professional development and reflection, as it is all about sharing what we do best and learning with and from each other. #globaledchat
A1: Teacher leaders are risk takers who are willing to put themselves out there even when they are surrounded by naysayers. They are committed and passionate teachers who want the best for their students and the profession. #globaledchat
A1 We have found our teacher leaders really live among our teachers who have had pivotal global experiences themselves, and want to ensure they can bring these global opportunities to their students. #GlobalEdChat
I love the last piece - "encourage the heart." I think this aspect is the easiest to forget but essential when creating a welcoming and trusting environment.
#GlobalEdChat
A1: Teacher leaders are fearless and will stand up for what they believe in. They have an open door policy, welcoming fellow educators, administration, and the community into their classroom. They are active in their community outslide the classroom. #GlobalEdChat
A2: I did a virtual presentation for a guy I only know through Twitter. It was his local school's inservice day. The teachers were great & asked great Qs. #globaledchat
A2: I’ve collaborated with international colleagues to develop lessons and PD for teachers using common local issues as global content in civics instruction – helping people see their concerns echoed in the experiences of others #globaledchat
A2: As a TGC Fellow, I spent 3 weeks in the Philippines and I have brought that and other travel experiences back to my students and my rural school community to inspire others to see the world with the same amount of wonder as I do. #globaledchat
A2: Global Learning Fellow @nzeichner is one of many great examples of a teacher leader! Check out this article about how he and his @seapubschools colleagues worked w/ parents and community orgs to create a network of int'l schools. #globaledchathttps://t.co/TITtz3oApU
Global Ed teacher-leaders support peers and learners by creating transformative classrooms through experiences/expertise sharing. (A1) #GlobalEdChat#globaled18
Yes! During my first year as a teacher, my mentor really emphasized the power of praise, positive reinforcement, always catching the students being good. I recognize this art of encouraging the heart is crucial for all forms of effective leadership #globaledchat
A1: Teacher Leaders are those whom other learners follow, as fellow educators or students. They are not afraid to take risks in order to do what is in the best interest of their students. They seek opportunities to engage and empower others. #GlobalEdChat
I love this plan, @jdeborahklein - and especially love that I'm seeing it more and more. Are your folks finding it to be useful/helpful/rewarding? #GlobalEdChat
In reply to
@jdeborahklein, @NEAFoundation, @jdeborahklein
A2: One thing I did as an English teache was to create a course called ‘Books Without Borders’ with global lit as an alternative to 11th grade American Lit so students had choice of which they’d like to take #globaledchat
A2: We jus started our first senior projects; students choose a passion & pursue it thru deep inquiry & experience, using experts in & out of the building (and Colombia). I can’t wait to see the results and already have three of my own mentees even though I’m Head! #globaledchat
A2: I am a newbie so this is my first exposure to Global Learning! I've been teaching for 9 years, but this is a new concept so I am excited to learn.
#GlobalEdChat
A2 I brought 2 Peruvian artists to work w/Ss and staff at my school w/ the support of the @NEAFoundation !! I have facilitated in-service trainings as well. #GlobalEdChat
#globaledchat A2 - Be an example to other teachers by trying to bring in difficult curriculum and expanding the conversation in my classroom to include other cultures and communities. Trying to travel and bring the cultures I encounter back to my classroom.
#globaledchat A2 - This includes curriculum about uncomfortable subjects like the Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear bombings, immigration crisis internationally, and trying to work with teachers all over the world to bring those subjects into context.
A2: Due to my own passion for @ablfk_ghana, I’ve inspired students to get involved, sponsor hens, record songs (https://t.co/Q1ho2pi2ht) and much more to help children in Ghana. I’m headed there in a month to check on our work and deliver some heartfelt notes too. #globaledchat
A2 I’ve kept it simple for my first ones, but by reading books and taking virtual field trips, I’ve introduced them purposefully to other countries. Most are military dependents and some have lived outside of US. #globaledchat
Absolutely—I can share the project the visits are connected with, but only in Spanish! :) The biggest challenge will be the ego blow to those teachers who don’t get visitors; but my best are already booked solid and are excited to share what they do. #globaledchat
A2: I’ve helped package and donate thousands of books to newborn babies all over WI, MN and Nicaragua to instill a love for reading at an early age! #globaledchat
A2- my school is a global school tks to @participate I work hard to model how to bring #globaled into the classroom through small day to day lessons as well as school wide assemblies & festivals celebrating cultures of other regions around the world #globaledchat
And that praise and value are so important for the staff too. If you can celebrate your colleagues and build that culture for staff and students then anything is possible. #GlobalEdChat
A2 - I have tried to Model the Way in my role as a study abroad coordinator. At @iEARNUSA I have collaborated w/local & international partners to implement exchange programs for over 200 youth, sharing our vision of a more interconnected, peaceful & just world. #Globaledchat
A2: For four years, I worked with student leaders to organize a World Water Week festival with assemblies, evening keynotes, a student conference, and service projects. In years 5-7 we expanded to host a youth global issues conference. Happy World Water Day! #globaledchat
Agreed! Global experiences can really transform a teacher -- both personally and professionally. It's inspiring when they can translate their experiences to students & colleagues #GlobalEdChat
I'm currently taking Spanish lessons, @jdeborahklein - at the rate I'm going I'll be able to read your projects as part of a 22nd Century Skills initiative ;-) #GlobalEdChat

A3 One barrier is the way we put instruction in silos. Finding ways to make content standards written years ago reflect the rapidly changing world we are preparing our students for can be difficult #GlobalEdChat
A2: I started joining #globaledchat about a year or two ago: it’s shaped my global lens on my teaching and I share the resources and takeaways from here with colleagues all the time
A2: I have sought to understand the brain and how it functions with fellow educators to better inform how to approach education for all students. I try to engage colleagues and students in considering a variety of multicultural perspectives. #GlobalEdChat
#globaledchat A2 - Be an example to other teachers by trying to bring in difficult curriculum and expanding the conversation in my classroom to include other cultures and communities. Trying to travel and bring the cultures I encounter back to my classroom.
A3 Many school districts think that global programs and initiatives are just more things to add to their plates and should think about how to infuse a global perspective into what they already do. #globaled18#Empower18#GlobalEdChat
A3: Administration buy-in. I like @dandrewt's advice: "Assemble working groups w/other teachers and get the ball rolling w/new ideas. It's easier to approach administration with the beginnings of consensus & ask for help w/implementation." https://t.co/ZmJLhJkbx7#globaledchat
A2: I learned a lot about global sanitation issues and incorporated lessons about toilets into my classes. Then I shared what I learned with other teachers through writing and conference presentations. You can find the article here: https://t.co/5cTVEW1T8n#globaledchat
Parents can sometimes be a barrier to promote global citizenship or competencies due to a lack of knowledge. They may be fearful in allowing their children to participate, so they do not give permission without knowing what it's all about. #GlobalEdChat
A2: The examples all you amazing global teacher leaders shared are so inspiring! Check out two more examples of incredible teacher leaders fostering global citizenship in their students in this @ELmagazine aricle here :https://t.co/whEfeGdEdd#Globaledchat
A2: Many of the teacher leaders we work with struggle to get the rest of the school and administration on board. They feel isolated in the work they do. #GlobalEdChat
Q3. We are so overwhelmed by standards, testing and behavior management that teachers see it as “just one more thing”. It’s just good teaching! #GlobalEdChat
A3: The district seeing the need to do these projects. Understanding the need for kids to make a difference on a larger scale. Access to technology or resources. #globaledchat
#globaledchat A3 - A lot of teachers tend to think that the key to a global classroom is technology, but there are many lo-fi ways to engage students globally: authentic literature, pen pals, photos, videos, and the teacher's own travel can be just as powerful as technology.
There’s always a concern about time, #globaledchat. truth is, when is there not time to make global connections to curriculum? Students are doing it, so acknowledge that and join them!
A3 - Tonya loved to quote Baha’u’llah: "Let your vision be world-embracing." Lack of that guiding vision is the first and most crucial barrier. Lack of resources (time, money, & expertise) is also a barrier, but secondary. #GlobalEdChat
I feel that individual counties/states need to buy-in and revamp their curriculum to embed collaboration among teachers and students. This will ensure all students receive similar experiences and making stronger connections.
#GlobalEdChat
A3 A barrier we've seen is a belief that you need to be the expert (regional, issue) in order to really be a global educator. It has been transformative for our teachers to discover that building global competence means you and your Ss explore the world together #GlobalEdChat
A3: One I hear a lot is that Global Ed is perceived as another add on. As #globaledchatters always say - it isn't another thing, it IS THE THING #globaledchat
A2) Right now, I am working with two different schools on identifying how poverty is impacting their communities. Focused on the #SDGs, students will design a collaborative project and craft a solution to initiate in their communities. #teachSDGs#GlobalEdChat
Jajajaja — si se puede! I can’t seem to convert the document into an image, so drop me an email if you’d like to see how the colleague observations fit into a whole semester-long PD project for teachers. #globaledchat
In reply to
@Laura_GlobalEd, @hsingmaster, @markjotter, @NEAFoundation
Hi #globaledchat! A1: Last week I witnessed remarkable leadership at .@MDSEagles: unshakable commitment to equity, #globaled, #empathy. Leaders clearly convey this in their core values - expressed in daily #peacepledge, curriculum, hiring, PD, communication to Ps...
A3 This is where the courage to lead comes in. I've had a lot of success modeling using global content to teach concepts in #civics and #economics - I also teach #reading by selecting global oriented texts that teach a skill I want students to learn #GlobalEdChat
I completely agree with this! #Globaled needs to be something that teachers are rewarded for and required to do. And, in the end, it leads to better student academic and behavioral outcomes. #GlobalEdChat
We used brain based learning in our English classroom in Argentina and it fit so well with global ed and critical thinking, being inquisitive, etc #globaledchat
A3: The biggest barrier I have experienced is the perception of other educators that global ed is just another add on that they don’t have time for considering their other responsibilities. Global ed is not an add-on and it is absolutely necessary for our Ss! #GlobalEdChat
Agreed! Global experiences can really transform a teacher -- both personally and professionally. It's inspiring when they can translate their experiences to students & colleagues #GlobalEdChat
A4 Work the connections you have, here on #globaledchat and any one you know “out there” in your world. All education is about relationships, so begin with the ones you have!
A4: PLCs are essential! For example our Global Learning Fellowship is a cohort-based PD program that not only helps educators bring the world to their classrooms, but also helps them connect w/ a network of #globaled advocates. #globaledchathttps://t.co/1dPewgCYq5
A4: as others have mentioned, one of the best ways to get connected with other global educators is through global PD - fellowships, travel programs, etc. TGC was how I first got connected to the global ed world. #globaledchat
A3: I think that sometimes perceived barriers are greater than the actual ones. Some fear/avoid global citizenship if they don’t know how to approach the subject. #GlobalEdChat
A2: I've incorporated #globaled through activities such as digital breakout games and Skyping with other classes from around the world. My intl biz students work on a video project about the cultural differences of conducting business in other countries #GlobalEdChat
A4: Connect with PLN, both in building and virtually. When you hear something cool in a chat like this, follow up with the person. Be proactive! Good teachers like to share #globaledchat
A4: I am very new to this whole process, but I would feel the mantra of "one step at a time" would be best! Support and ideas from others who have taken the plunge. #GlobalEdChat
A3: One I hear a lot is that Global Ed is perceived as another add on. As #globaledchatters always say - it isn't another thing, it IS THE THING #globaledchat
SDGs are a great lens for infusing global without reinventing the wheel! The SDGs align with curriculum goals so well. #globaled18#Empower18#GlobalEdChat
A3: In a conflict region (Colombia), our biggest barriers are political ones, a sort of implicit fear of discussing #humanrights and #equity because of a divisive political climate. We are confronting it head-on through projects on the peace process & elections. #globaledchat
Hi Angela! I'm glad to see another #NEAFglobal Fellow on the #GlobalEdChat tonight. You are so right -- #GlobalEd shouldn't just be another thing on the plate, it should be the plate!
A4- I started https://t.co/DqDJMkDFbk for this very reason...I needed a place to go for all my coalitions, links, resources, etc. So, one best practice is to start your own website or library to collect and compile and reference the myriad resources. #globaledchat
#globaledchat A4 - Finding your tribe, either online or f2f is very important. I have a few teachers that I feel completely comfortable around with global ed topics and I rely on them. Twitter, conferences, and travel all help with that as well.
England isn't participating because they feel it would be too big of a burden. But if they are already taking the PISA test, is it really that much more of a burden?? #globaledchat
In reply to
@mrterborg, @globaledcon, @Grade4Johannes, @NEAFoundation, @rosivachr
A4: Keep joining twitter chats, look for small local organizations doing big global things, find like minded colleagues, attend PDs or panels or talks on topics of global interest. Look for allies there.... #globaledchat
A4: The Teacher's Guide to Global Collaboration (https://t.co/rCbsWRRKvK) is a great tool for teachers to share resources and project opportunities with one another #GlobalEdChat
A4: Attend an online unconference with worldwide participants to engage in global education conversations, and bridge geographical gaps with virtual and digital means. #GlobalEdChat
A4: Certainly #globaledchat to start, and @globaledcon as well. I spotlight both in @globaledguide. But I’m also a big believer in teacher travel, as the face-to-face connections seem to lead to longer and deeper relationships of more benefit to students. #globaledchat
A3) I believe the greatest barrier resides in the release of power. Often, we try to script the student product when it should be the students leading the way. #GlobalEdChat
A4 - Another "best practice" is to learn to value the power of an awesome PLN like #globaledchat and follow folks and great thinkers. I have made certain to follow all of you here tonight and hope you will do the same. We are connected! Dean at https://t.co/DqDJMkDFbk
A3: #globaled shouldn't be a separate unit, but embedded into curriculum. It's a great skill for students to look at issues from a different perspective. #globaledchat
I wonder if the ranking aspect plays a part - great if you are Finland, but I can see folks, rightly or wrongly, shying away from potential bad press #globaledchat
In reply to
@hsingmaster, @mrterborg, @globaledcon, @Grade4Johannes, @NEAFoundation, @rosivachr
A3 What you are describing is not just in conflict zones. the #mnleg has bill to provide "academic balance" which, even if it does not pass has a chilling effect. #globaledchat
Yes! Find your trusted #globaled posse! Be on the lookout for others who care about it - or at least are curious and willing to try new ideas. #globaledchat
A4: Take advantage of the connections you’ve created through PLCs, fellowships, and social media. The world is literally at our fingertips now and we have to capitalize on our many opportunities to connect. #GlobalEdChat
A4: The Teacher's Guide to Global Collaboration (https://t.co/rCbsWRRKvK) is a great tool for teachers to share resources and project opportunities with one another #GlobalEdChat
Super-important point - when we stop sharing our trials and failures, we create an invisible perception that it "comes easily to us" and then others who struggle wonder if maybe it is just "not for them" #globaledchat
In reply to
@mmebrady, @WCPSMsThomas, @NEAFoundation
A4: Dedicated time! Our teachers in global programs like @EmbassyAdoption & DCPS Study Abroad have at least two dedicated PD days to come together for teacher-led sessions on how to implement programs, share best practices, etc. #GlobalEdChat
A4: @TeachtoLead provides teachers the opportunity to lead initiatives without leaving the classroom and connects them to a network of like-minded teacher leaders #TTLNetwork#Globaledchat
A3: In a conflict region (Colombia), our biggest barriers are political ones, a sort of implicit fear of discussing #humanrights and #equity because of a divisive political climate. We are confronting it head-on through projects on the peace process & elections. #globaledchat
Yes, Japan is not participating because it will be ranked. They said if it wasn't ranked (at least not initially), they would have participated #globaledchat

A5: We believe that when educators unleash their own power, students, schools and communities benefit. We support educators through our Global Learning Fellowship, Grants to Educators, Awards for Teaching Excellence, and other programs. #globaledchathttps://t.co/GmmQn9Uc2k
A4- Twitter has been my best adventure to connecting to #globaled PLNs Such an inspirational group and the resources and ideas have been incredible #globaledchat
I can only imagine—terrifying. I brought Palestinian voices into US classrooms for years, and it was the hardest work I’ve ever done. “Academic balance” is code for watering down and/or avoiding opinions, and it runs in direct opposition to the goals of #globaled. #globaledchat
Q4. I’m a stealth teacher. I ask my students what they are learning in their core classes then I either ask to watch the teacher teach or tell them about what I’m doing and ask how I can support them in my room or ask if they’d like to collaborate. #GlobalEdChat
A5: We believe that when educators unleash their own power, students, schools and communities benefit. We support educators through our Global Learning Fellowship, Grants to Educators, Awards for Teaching Excellence, and other programs. #globaledchathttps://t.co/GmmQn9Uc2k
A5- Teachers and Educational leaders have to engage with global organizations and local community organizations such as @WACATL and @GlobalAtlanta and others... #globaledchat
In reply to
@NEAFoundation, @WACATL, @GlobalAtlanta
A5: Recognize powerful and poignant voices, and connect them to venues where such will be appreciated and valued; then, invest in these perspectives with time and support to sustain the voices with actions. #GlobalEdChat
It is so sad that they are not... but as leaders, we need to be persistent and not give up when barriers present ... we must be stronger and more determined! #GlobalEdChat
A5: They can elevate #globaled teacher voices by giving them a face--celebrate and share their work on social media, at family nights, in newsletters. Show that this is something that is valued and recognized! #GlobalEdChat
A4: I believe best practices include knowing and honoring your local community and traveling and connecting to others globally. Through twitter I’ve connected to educators in The UAE 🇦🇪 where I used to teach. Growing those connections between students is key. #GlobalEdChat
A5 Another easy one #globaledchat: they can put their money behind these young and adult learner leaders. Time is less an issue when there is dime on the table!
A4: The iEARN Network (https://t.co/SYLscxMxw2) connects over 50,000 educators around the world doing global projects. We are a family and community of global leaders collaborating, sharing practice and knowledge. #GlobalEdChat
#globaledchat A5 - My admin is a great example of support. They want me to attend conferences and try new things in the classroom. Its that old ideas of "Yes, and" rather than "No, but" Lets add to the experience rather than stop the experience from happening.
Yes! I never understand when decisions are made by people who haven’t stepped foot in a school in a long time, especially ones that are struggling or ones that may not get celebration or recognition. #globaledchat
A4: Look for PD travel opportunities to connect with other teachers! Last summer, I spent two weeks in Germany with @TOPTeachGermany. I grew personally and professionally through this experience! #topstudytour#globaledchat
I hope so. Doing #globaled#pbl in this particular moment/context, with kids of privilege, might actually have resounding impacts for the future of the country. It’s both terrifying and exciting to be on the front lines of a new Colombia, whatever that means. #globaledchat
A5: Elevate T voice in #globaled by: dedicating PD time, staff meetings, having annual learning themes encouraging global solutions, #pbl, collaborating with local civic orgs with a global & diverse audience, keep a running list that many can add to! #GlobalEdChat
Yes! It's easy to forget that your own neighborhood is part of the "globe" and is therefore "global." I think U.S.-based folks often accidentally fall into the false binary "U.S." v "global" #GlobalEdChat
Yes! I never understand when decisions are made by people who haven’t stepped foot in a school in a long time, especially ones that are struggling or ones that may not get celebration or recognition. #globaledchat
It works anywhere, with any kids #globaledchat@jdeborahklein ! My first PBL projects were with young learners in Liberia back in the 80s, in the midst of the lead up to the Liberian Civil War.
I hope so. Doing #globaled#pbl in this particular moment/context, with kids of privilege, might actually have resounding impacts for the future of the country. It’s both terrifying and exciting to be on the front lines of a new Colombia, whatever that means. #globaledchat
A5 Treat teachers as the professionals they are, both to them & to the public. Listen to them, include them in the decision-making, policy-making #globaledchat
A5: When teachers are pushing for global ed, give them the support they need and help amplify their voices to lead to the meaningful curricular changes our Ss need. #GlobalEdChat
A5 organizations can help create opportunities ... i am skeptical about elevating teacher voice as it is usually done in a self serving manner #globaledchat
Q6: How can teachers contribute to developing a shared vision for global education in a school among colleagues, administration, students, and parents? #globaledchat
A5 Treat teachers as the professionals they are, both to them & to the public. Listen to them, include them in the decision-making, policy-making #globaledchat
#GlobalEdChat Q5 : In our school, we have Student Family Council monthly meeting. During the meeting principal, stakeholders and even student representative join us and discuss agenda related to school improvement plan.
A6 Tremendously important to learn about how parents in your school community are engaged in #globaledchat in their workplaces. Design projects that can draw in their real world experiences!
Q6: How can teachers contribute to developing a shared vision for global education in a school among colleagues, administration, students, and parents? #globaledchat
A4 #globaledchat & other twitter chats, such as #sschat, #worldgeochat as online PLCs. Our organization (C-GEO) has seen many great teacher connections develop thru our international summer institutes!
A6: Teachers can be examples of globally competent individuals and include various perspectives in their classrooms and in conversations with administration and the community. #globaledchat#globaled18
I'd love to see global committees in schools take an inventory of current global initiatives and think about where they could infuse more global into their schools. #globaled18#globaledchat#Empower18
A6: Teachers who are passionate and well-versed in global ed often need to take the lead in promoting global ed within their school community. #GlobalEdChat
A6: I think first teachers have to be honest and willing to share what they feel is best for the growth of the students. Additionally, they also have to listen to what other community members feel would be beneficial and all work together.
#GlobalEdChat
A6 I began by inviting other classes & T’s into share a @Skype lesson, then on in service day I shared the @EmpaticoOrg platform & several signed up, I was sort of scared at first when I began to go global so I know how they feel, first step is unknown to many #GlobalEdChat
The Power of Teacher Leadership can never be under estimated. Regardless of how advance any technology maybe, the Teacher's modelling & influence still remain as the major key to student's appropriate use of them. #Globaledchat
A6: Teachers have to be a key piece of creating a school/district/state vision on global ed, bc they are the boots-on-the-ground who will make it happen. We started with a listening tour of our city, and made certain teacher voice was a huge part of that. #globaledchat
#globaledchat A6 - By constant awareness in lesson planning to the perspectives that we are espousing and the ones that we are not. I am writing a unit on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and trying to take all perspectives into account as I go through.
#globaledchat A6 - In that process I am trying to engage students, other teachers, and the parents in the overall process so that the end unit is community supported and hopefully generated.
A6 - Adopting a “Teacher Leader” mindset and practice is one way for teachers to do this! Share resources, be a mentor, share expertise, encourage exchanges & foreign languages, incorporate global issues into everyday curriculum. #globaledchat
A6: Teachers can be examples of globally competent individuals and include various perspectives in their classrooms and in conversations with administration and the community. #globaledchat#globaled18
A5) District leaders need to reflect on the type of student they want to produce; and, if indeed school leaders want students to truly be future ready, than they must immerse Ss in dynamic learning environments that allow them to practice and refine their skills.#GlobalEdChat
This is a powerful exercise. I’ve been to many communities that might think “we aren’t global.” But start a list of local resources, initiatives and it’s often astounding and empowering! #globaledchat
I'd love to see global committees in schools take an inventory of current global initiatives and think about where they could infuse more global into their schools. #globaled18#globaledchat#Empower18
Q5: I think sometimes we forget to ask. I started asking all of our associated politicians to visit my class. Senators, US Congressmen, state senators, the governor , the mayor, our city council person, etc. once I get them in, they help me make connections #GlobalEdChat
A6 Teachers can be the facilitators of sharing global perspectives & modeling that is nothing to be fearful of. Listen to community members perspectives & facilitate getting their voices heard, so they can be on board, while staying true to #globaledchat tenants
A6: When people feel the learning is relevant to their lives, their children’s lives, their students’ lives there is buy-in. When they realize that the solutions that the entire world needs must come from the kids they are more apt to support global education. #GlobalEdChat
Q6: How can teachers contribute to developing a shared vision for global education in a school among colleagues, administration, students, and parents? #globaledchat
Staying true to #GlobalEd tenants is important. When engaging with other audiences, pairing it with 21st century skills can be an entry point #GlobalEdChat
A6: Buy in to a shared vision requires including all stakeholders in events and dialogue about #globaled. Every exhibition of student learning also brings more community members on board; seeing what students believe is important helps us align our sense of purpose. #globaledchat
Q6: How can teachers contribute to developing a shared vision for global education in a school among colleagues, administration, students, and parents? #globaledchat
A6 I start by recognizing and acknowledging my privilege, then try to create space for the voices of my students and their parents. But don’t stop at the schoolhouse door! Go to local small and large businesses, faith communities and organizations like Rotary clubs #GlobalEdChat
Q7: Suggestions: What will you or your organization personally pledge to do in the next year to push the global education movement forward? #globaledchat
A7: @AsiaSocietyEDU is committed to continuing to support teacher leaders as they work to integrate global competence into what they are teaching. We are always open to your thoughts and suggestions! #globaledchat
I think for buy in- We need more opportunities to provide Educators and the community to have experiences together that allow a shared vision. #GlobalEdChat
A7 We at @Proj_ARC are always committed to helping teachers develop more authentic, relevant, and complex projects with their school communities #globaledchat@ibpbljill@daylynn
yes! Often times demonstrating to parents & business community how those skills translate into making students more able to navigate in an interconnected world as an adult get buy in #globaledchat
A7: A few people mentioned Skype so I want to incorporate these learning opportunities for students. For myself, I want to continue to expand my PLC by joining chats regularly.
