Our chat will focus on the idea that we can lead and make positive change from any position in our school systems. Leadership is not about a title, it is a way of thinking and acting.
I'm Jessica, principal in rural WI. I have several I'm reading right now. For professional I'm currently reading Target Based Grading by @LarsonGarth#LeadLAP
But Lead w/ Literacy is on my order/to-read list!
Andre Koch Assistant Principal at a K8 STEAM PBL school. I am from Renton, WA.
I just finished Lead With Culture and am about to open Lead with Literacy for the first time.
I am also reading I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter. It is really good! #leadlap
Reading grounds your values, challenges your truths, sparks your creativity, inspires your thoughts, & expands your circle. You - including your learning environment, & your contributions to your PLN - are forever changed. TY, Alicia, for leading the charge! #DBCSummer50

Good Morning, #LeadLAP! I am Anna from San Diego! This summer, I have been rereading the PIRATE books and cannot WAIT to get my #LEADLIT book to complete my collection! Thank you, @mandyeellis for the stickers! For fun, I am also reading The Princess Bride.
A1: I love dressing up to do Principal Read Alouds in classrooms and have set them on my calendar for this year. I also enjoy having reading groups with kids in my office and bringing the books to life! #LeadLAP#LeadLIT#TLAP
Good morning #LeadLAP from Barbara, author of What's Under Your Cape? and character coach in TX. Finished #ThePepperEffect; here's my favorite page. Taking a break to learn how to podcast this week! Happy Saturday; eager to grow with you.
A1: When I was a teacher, I kept a list of all the books I read on my classroom door. As a principal, I did Read Alouds in rooms & always had books in my office. Now I blog about my reading & recommend books to others often. #LeadLAPhttps://t.co/hSIXPH32ka
A1: The library entrance has a poster of my reading goals, what I'm reading and how many books I've read. Email signature also lists what I'm currently reading. Lunch convos w/ students are always about books! #LeadLAP
A1: I always keep the various books I am reading lying around, I read openly in collaborative spaces and I always use insights from my reading immediately while collaborating. #LeadLAP
I am currently reading 10% Happier...all about the importance of mindfulness. Trying to be reflective this summer as I recharge for next year! #LeadLAP
A1: I am always saying, "Hey! Your GOTTA read _____! I just read ____ and it made me think ___ or wonder ____!" For my Ss, who are kinders, they see me reading all day and cannot wait to do the same. #LeadLAP
A1: I have a sign outside my classroom/office sharing what I/ we are reading, I include what I’m reading professionally, personally, and in #kidslit on weekly memos, I have a professional text lending library, I do book giveaways at school-based PD #LeadLAP#LeadLIT
A1: I combine a blog and podcasts and millions of conversations with colleagues about what we're reading. Recently, our Director of Maintenance recommended a book called The Third Teacher...and our central office leaders are now reading it. That's cool!#LeadLAP#TLAP#LEADLIT
A1: I continually share ideas and quotes from books I'm reading. Everyone can see the books I'm reading because I display them and I lend them out and buy them for staff #LeadLAP
A1: I always read during our literacy night to our students and make a fool out myself showing my love for reading.
I need to do more. 1. I need to have more books in my office for kids. 2. I need to encourage readers. 3. I need to recognize readers. #leadlap
A1 In the classroom, read with your students & talk about what you’ve read w/them. At school, ask what others have read, ask for suggestions, & share your favorites. On twitter, share what you read & what stuck with you. #LeadLit#LeadLAP
A1: I share via social media what I am reading and recommend on a regular basis so my PLN and colleagues know I’m always growing and what’s a good read #leadlap
A1: I think reading with the Ss, no matter what age, is still important. I remember my 3rd grade teacher reading The Secret Garden to the class...if I can remember that all these years ago, it was special. I encourage teachers to replicate that & I’ll even do it as an IC #LeadLAP
A1: We post "Mrs. Gruener Is Reading #Path2Serendipity" signs outside of every classroom and office so everyone knows that we're readers. We also share pictures of our favorite pages via email and text. Wouldn't it be fun to post those in the lounge? #leadlap
A1: I share my reading life with everyone by talking about the books I read, recommending books & always am willing to physically share the books I read with Ss & Ts #LEADLIT#LeadLAP
A1: I’m striving to be a Lead Reader in ways that bring people in rather than push away. We did a book tasting at the end of the year, and I took some staff to hear one of my favorite authors in @DFISHERSDSU. Hope to have many good conversations this upcoming year. #LeadLAP
A1: As Principal I organize book studies with my staff. Last year we did a #boldschool chat. This year it will be Teach Like a Pirate! I also run small groups with students. I also did a book study with some 8th graders on Handling Teenage Stress (their choice!) #leadlap
A1 I think we make time for it in our building talk about what we are reading currently and what we have read during the year, do conduct a book study share your books and put them on display. #LeadLAP
#LeadLAP#leadlit A1: This year, my principal @zachatarrant and I want to have a focus on literacy. I’ve put up some shelves in my office to display current reading. We will encourage teachers to do the same to establish a culture of literacy.
A couple of things that I have done are @StevenLayne 's suggestion of having a Hot Reads stand where students can see what I am currently reading. I also have posted on the wall all of the books that we have read at each grade level. #leadlap#leadlit
A1: For me, bringing something to read everywhere I go is crucial, also in our classrooms we have a emphasize the universal importance of reading. It a great opportunity since we have a public lib right next to our school. #LeadLIT#LeadLAP

A1 I send a weekly #CelebrateMonday email and include a Book Share- a book for Ts/leaders that I've recently read with some highlights #LeadLAP My students love book talks!
#LeadLAP A1: I bring up something I've read into conversations. There is always a way to tie it in. I also share the 4-5 best articles with staff in our weekly newsletter.
A1: I have a sign outside my classroom/office sharing what I/ we are reading, I include what I’m reading professionally, personally, and in #kidslit on weekly memos, I have a professional text lending library, I do book giveaways at school-based PD #LeadLAP#LeadLIT
A1: I have what I’m reading posted outside my office door and during interviews I ask @BethHouf interview question from #LeadLAP “What book have you read recently that has impacted you as an educator?” This questions revels a lot!
A1 I keep books on hand and share w/Ss when they come into my office. I always share titles of professional books in meetings with Ts. Individual meetings are where the ‘reading magic’ happens! #LeadLAP
A1: I was new to a school last year, so I read to every class a picture book to not only introduce myself, but to introduce values of the school. #LeadLAP#LEADLIT
A1: Our staff is currently considering ways to increase access to books. We may also do a building-wide read of a book - perhaps #FishInATree. #LeadLAP
A1: It's funny because when kids are in the office, they always ask me, "Did you read all of those books?" My answer is always, Most of of them but not all of them. But I can't wait until I do #LeadLAP
I have tried every year to spend the first two weeks on choosing books and talking about being a reader, throughoutthe year I share books I’m reading, keep a class list and help students choose books #LeadLAP
A1 Book is on my desk I am reading or want to read. My current read is part of my email signature. I share #booksnaps with staff and students. Working on making reading part of the culture #leadlap
A1: #leadlap#leadlit I share my #booksnaps all the time. We have 5 books study options to start the year with a Google Classroom to go with each. #booksnaps will be one of the challenges to go with it! @googlesnapseed is my favorite way to make them.
A1: I model my enthusiasm for reading by talking about the books I am reading, sharing excerpts from books and having chats with my students about what they are reading. 😊📚#leadLAP
Q2 is UP! How do parents and students KNOW you value reading. What visual evidence is there to support your value of reading? #LeadLAP#LeadLIT@burgess_shelley@BethHouf
This past year I also ran with an idea in my building to get more students reading with a school-wide reading challenge! https://t.co/APQZ7e3X4F#leadlap
A2: We put books EVERYWHERE! In the hallways, foyers, above water fountains, in bathtubs, in the cafeteria, outside bathrooms, EVERYWHERE! #LeadLAP#LeadLIT#TLAP
I am John from southern Utah. I will be a new principal at a K-2 building in southern Idaho the upcoming school year. A lot of changes! #LeadLap#LeadLit
That’s awesome! I would love to the book group with Ss. Time is a challenge to get us together with all of the other activities they are part of. Going to try an August meet-up for summer reading. #LeadLAP
A1 I teach band, but I am always asking my Ss about what they're reading & share what I'm reading. Over the last 2 yrs, I have been building a mini-independent reading center for my 6-8 Ss, w/a variety of topics-Just wrote a mini-grant to get more books for it. #leadlit#LeadLAP
#LeadLAP A1. When I ask kids what they like to read and pull out 2 or 3 they may like, they always ask how do I know they are good? I simply tell them because I read them. I try to keep up on reading books they might like as well.
A2: We Free libraries throught the school, we give books to students for birthdays and we give summer reading books where every student got 10 choice books this year! #LeadLAP#LeadLIT
Q2 is UP! How do parents and students KNOW you value reading. What visual evidence is there to support your value of reading? #LeadLAP#LeadLIT@burgess_shelley@BethHouf
Our book studies are for teachers, but it would be amazing to do it for your S's as well. T's could share their #booksnaps for them. P's would love it! #LeadLAP#LeadLIT
@SusanBi23696508 I agree. A1: I wish I had time to read a book right now. During the school year I try and discuss with students what they're reading outside of school. #leadlap
A1: In my classroom, I stop frequently during reading to search for treasures of learning that might be passed up if we don’t stop and learn how to dig deeper. These could be context-treasures or life-relating treasures, etc. #LeadLAP#LEADLIT
A2: From the moment our students enter our school we want them to be immersed in a print-rich environment that promotes literacy learning. We want them to be surrounded by wonderful books, writing, and writing supplies that makes them want to be readers and writers. #leadlap

A2: My office is full of books. I always try to reference them and loan them out. I have conversations with students about what they are reading and try to stay current. #leadlap
A2: Need to work on visual evidence. I had quotes from books all over the circulation desk last year, but want to go bigger this year! Looking for ideas! I do #BookSnaps, but looking for physical representation. #LeadLAP
A2. They'll see books EVERYWHERE. I keep books in every corner of my classroom. Our "Reading corner", where Ss can lay down, use blankets, pillows and plush toys while they enjoy reading a good book. Foster the love of reading for pleasure #LeadLAP
In reply to
@mandyeellis, @burgess_shelley, @BethHouf
I have the books I'm reading on display in my office, we talk about the importance of literacy and make time for it in our buildings schedule each week with DEAR time. When I eat lunch with kids I ask what they are reading and share with them what I'm reading #LeadLap
A2: Most of our classrooms have small "libraries" of choice books. We also have groups that meet during lunch to read together. However, a culture of reading is something that we need to promote more to the community. It is certainly a goal for this year. #leadlap
A2: Well first they will have to read when they come in my classroom as you can see below. They will also see my personal library that my learners can peruse and check out books from. #LeadLAP
A2: a basket of books in the front office in case you have to sit and wait for the nurse, an overflowing bookshelf in my office, the birthday books shelf in the office. #notenoughspaceforthebooks! #LeadLAP
A2: We talk about the importance of spending time together reading. We also protect our reading time in the schedule and are very strategic about reading interventions. We set goals with Ss and make sure that parents know those goals too. #LeadLIT#LeadLAP
A2: Make bulletin boards from the titles! Here's one I made while I was writing my book, right before it was published, to pique student interest in not only being a reader, but also a writer. #leadlap
A2. I tell parents the books that their child really liked or had an amazing reaction to. This year I’ll have a calendar with my #Sketchnotes. Hope to spark convos, stay inspired, and encourage more reflection in visual ways. #leadlap
Q2 is UP! How do parents and students KNOW you value reading. What visual evidence is there to support your value of reading? #LeadLAP#LeadLIT@burgess_shelley@BethHouf
Q2: The principal @ my new campus has students’ reading achievements in the entry way of the campus. The staff also celebrate the amount of words the students read. This shows the students (& parents) that their efforts w/reading are valued. #LeadLAP
Q2 is UP! How do parents and students KNOW you value reading. What visual evidence is there to support your value of reading? #LeadLAP#LeadLIT@burgess_shelley@BethHouf
I'm not into fiction, but if my HS is excited about a book, I tell my husband who loves to explore and he reports back. That seems to be enough to convince that S I care. #leadlap
A2: To be honest this is something I need to work on. There really isn't any visual evidence that reading needs to be important in my classroom. #leadlap
A2) Parents will see students all have books, my classroom library is overflowing, our classroom reads are posted, and students are reading goals on our class bulletin board. We celebrate ss who make thier reading goals on the announcements. #leadlap
It's so fun! S's could use Google Drawings or Slides as well and save as a PNG. Maybe make a shared folder for them to drop it in so it's easy for T's to share. #LeadLAP#LeadLit

A2: our number one PTA fundraiser is Book It! We encourage students to read, read, read! No wrapping paper, no outside org taking money. Just our community donating to school while celebrating reading! #readingrocks#LeadLAP
A2: On Fridays, I often pair a reading T-shirt with my 👖, my @girlscouts put up a #littlefreelibrary in front of the school, we are building classroom libraries that encourage wide reading and reflect diversity in our world, we celebrate OSOB with @readtothem#LeadLAP#LeadLIT

A2: my school is a Title 1, when we did home visits each student was gifted a book. Also, we did a Student of Month awards- free breakfast, teachers said specific things students did to students and their parents and they chose a book! #LeadLap#Leadlit
A2:As a teacher I once had funding to help my Ss create their own home library. Each month they wrote a request for a new book & how it would add value to their home library. At they end, they took a picture of their library to share. Powerful! #LeadLAP
Q2 is UP! How do parents and students KNOW you value reading. What visual evidence is there to support your value of reading? #LeadLAP#LeadLIT@burgess_shelley@BethHouf
#LeadLAP#leadlit A2: We hope they see books, books, and more books! We are excited to put some new ideas in place to promote literacy. Our librarian @pacfaulkner and one of our ELA @htuel34 teachers do book tastings and bundle books...the kids love it!
A1: Had a student tour and the mom shooed the little boy out of my office. I said no let him in. I have books, pillows...Ss are always welcome. Not a place to be feared. #LeadLAP
A2: I have books out everywhere, for everyone to see...and ask questions about. I have literally handed books to people who asked about them. Recently Innovator's Mindset went to a young man wanting to be an emergency sub for us! #LeadLAP#TLAP#LEADLIT
A2: Our school has been undergoing a major facelift this summer. Finally getting school colors and logos in the hallways. We hope to have a bathtub library, or something similar, in our front entrance very soon. #LeadLAP
A2: just setting up my office at my new school...Including a reading area for students and a lending library of professional resources for staff and parents. Books are everywhere :) #LeadLAP
A1: I’ve been posting what I’m reading all summer on my Instagram feed for my students. During the year I have my current reading list posted in the room, and I love modeling reading during reading time. #leadLAP
@Nate A2: I agree with Nate, there isn't a lot of evidence in my room. However, I do have some books. I used to have more, but they kept growing legs. #leadlap
#LeadLAP#LeadLIT@burgess_shelley@BethHouf A2: In our school we have family reading nights, Ss engage parents into reading with them. Also, we put quote with visual aids on the walls to our lib. In our classrooms, reading corner with book shelves are Ss favorite places to go.

A2: I'm working on this, I want to start having "books to read this month" list with a #pixelpal light up to get everyone's attention on the list. #leadlap
My Ss work in teams, collaborating around scenario-based math problems that take them thru low-floor, high ceiling tasks. It's all S-centered reading #leadlap
A1: I also have Story Club days for every unit. My students are assigned roles, read together, and are given pop-up assignments to complete and share. #LeadLAP#LEADLit
A2: My classroom is filled with books. I do not assign homework except that I ask parents to read with their children every night. We have (almost) monthly family nights, mostly revolving around literacy. #LeadLAP
Awwwzers...thanks, Monica. Honored to to have Be REAL among that amazing stack of books.

A1: I do a read aloud in my classroom, there's no reason why books can't be included in a middle school science class! Plus, I'm always talking about book recommendations in class--only way my Ss can get us off track is by bringing up books #LeadLAP
A2: An engaging classroom library should be the focal point of a classroom. Put books everywhere! Have math books in your number corner. Your design can really draw students in! #leadlap#LEADLIT

A3: I'm working more on group discussions and story debates. I started this in my business basics class. I'm planning on two in Entrepreneurship this year. #leadlap
Lena, it's interesting because the first to years we did this, we took data on the summer slide - 90 percent of the kids came back at or above their DRA level they left at. According to reseach I think the average is between 50-60 % #LeadLAP
A1: I'm a #PhysEd teacher and I strongly advocate my kids read. I send out emails to my students asking for suggestions and we have book talks for the first 5 mins of class. We even have several books that our students read as part of supplemental curriculum.

A3: If Ss have access to school-provided devices at home, they can access the local library online (I just started reading e-books from my library!). Also going to the library for books is a great experience at school & at home! #LeadLAP
Rena, elementary principal joining! A1: I recommend professional reads to colleagues, post #BookSnaps & quote reads in weekly staff newsletters. I join Ss in rdg challenges & talk books with Ss. @Eric_Carlin and I use @DoInkTweets to share books on video announcements. #LeadLAP
#LeadLAP#LeadLIT#TLAP A3 I heard somewhere it’s best not to have a PC in a kid’s bedroom. Is it the same way with their library at home? Where does one put their child’s books in the home?
I use a little Khan Academy. Ss discover reading Khan Academy text hints is faster than watching videos. They quickly advance their non-fic reading skills doing that. #LeadLAP

IF ONLY my school would allow book studies for PD. My PLN has such tremendous knowledge to share!! #teachermyth#culturize#leadLAP@ShakeUpLearning@gcouros Could go on and on and on. Am THANKFUL at least I have you all!!
A2: I think I have the biggest classroom library on campus! Really, it's a give-brary, kids can take books and don't have to return them! It's important for kids to see the values of books, no matter the class they're in. #LeadLAP
A3: Our media specialist @ElexiaKilgore is amazing at working with Ss to always have books. They can work off any fees owed to the library if needed. The library is also open everyday, so Ss can always come find new treasures! #leadLAP#LeadLIT
@mandyeellis@mandyeellis A2... Teachers, Students and Admin see below as soon as they enter my room. I also have a small bookshelf of books for kids and at least 5 books I'm reading on my desk (not to mention a nook in my drawer) #LeadLAP#LeadLit
A1: Books found easily in the classroom, neatly displayed in hardback-paperback-electronic, always an option if Ss need a break, finish a task early, as well as group read time and research time...lots of genre choices, reading is a part of everything we do! #leadlap#Leadlit
I share with Ss what I am reading for fun and acedmics to be a better teacher. Ss like that. I also leave reading “bait” around the room to hook Ss into taking it😂 #leadLAP#LeadLIT#edmodolove

Ss should be able to read at least 80-90% of the book by themselves using different decoding strategies when they encounter unfamiliar words. The other 20-10% should be within their reach with adult help #LeadLAP

It's absolutely my favorite that you have STAFF birthday books! Posted that idea on my book's FB page this week, along with a rec to read your book. #leadlap
Our local real estate office put a #LittleFreeLibrary in front of their office which is right in the middle of our little town center. Perfect location. I dropped off 3 bags of books when I reorganized at the end of the school year. #LeadLAP
Couldn't you do one after school or use a #coffeeedu setting for that? I bet if you started it, they would see the benefit. Don't quit trying to make that an option. Also, check out #4ocf Four O'Clock Faculty by @RACzyz It will give you more inspiration! #leadlap#leadlit

A2: Parents and students can see That I value reading by the way I present our current texts. I also show that I value authors by putting their pictures around my classroom.
A3: In our Mooney Education Building in Elon univerisity, on the very first floor when everyone passes every day, there is room full of book for everyone to read. It is a great idea to set up "casual" library everywhere. #LeadLAP#LeadLIT#TLAP#ElonEd@burgess_shelley@BethHouf

A3 I work with special ed and have done a month of “The very hungry caterpillar” & the David series (No David) to hook and engage some of my students. If I can hook my students, they will learn. #LeadLit#LeadLAP
A4: I share book recommendations on my classroom Instagram account! It's fun when kids check them out from the library because they saw me post about it :) also, doing a read aloud has opened up many deep conversations, even if they're not directly science related! #LeadLAP
A2: Cozy corners, comfy seating, easily accessible texts & technology for literacy promotion. Sometimes we even get a guest from another class who may need a break, former Ss of mine come in just to read and relax! "#leadlap#Leadlit
I've had many books from my library disappear (which I'm okay with) but many return months/years later :) #LeadLAP Glad the kiddo enjoyed reading the book!
A4 one small thing that I do is when I talk to kids about their favorite books is I try to get a copy and read it if I haven't and use it to build relationships. The Harry Potter books are still wearing me out. #LeadLAP
A4: I think I'm going to try and add a weekly reading time into my middle school science classes where they are allowed to bring something to read or I can provide something, but it has to be science. #LeadLAP

A4: I love reading to Ss. The last two years I have randomly asked Ts to turn their class over to me for 15 min so I can read aloud. I really hope to increase the number of times this happens this year! #leadLAP#LeadLIT
A4 When I taught pre-k my favorite time was the fairy tale unit. All the reading and learning lead up to a fairy tale ball on Valentine’s Day. So precious! #leadlap
A4: Between the Lines Book Club (Book to movie adaptations) is going to be a morning club this year! More Ss can participate bc they won’t need transportation or notes to stay. #LeadLAP

Most did in the past & I was getting them on EBay for $40, but right now I have 20 that have not come back yet. It was an expensive year, but I'm passionate about equity & Ss who can practice at home have advantages. #LeadLAP
A4 I plan lessons on what my students are interested in. No David!, The very hungry caterpillar, and Mercy Watson are hits with my students. You can incorporate so many skills within one book. #Leadlit#LeadLAP

A3: We have held a book swap where students bring in books they no longer want and then every student came to the gym and picked a new book to take home. Some students brought many books so it balanced out for those students who had no books to donate #LeadLAP
A4: We wrote this grant w our Educ Foundation, to get these titles that support our #corevalues into each classroom, so we have a read-aloud book of the month. Kids waited eagerly to hear the next month's book, preferably w/a mystery reader. https://t.co/ft2s1sgyX3#leadlap

We are a small private school. No dedicated librarian. I have been that go to in the past. Planning on reclaiming this year to stay connected with kids and share my love of reading. #LeadLAP#LeadLit
A4: We do a move up day in which the students get to meet with teachers of the next grade level to talk about the books they will be reading over the summer and into next year. Great way to build relationships and talk about reading. #leadlap
A4: I really want to expand book studies for the Ss..both fiction and nonfiction. I would love to get parents in on a book study relevant for them. Any ideas? #LeadLAP
A4) I hope to do the reading Challenge again, but I’m also looking into doing a 3rd - 5th Grade book club to get Ss Reading and excited about diving into a book. I also want to have students share more their current reads or share a finished read during morning meeting #LeadLAP
A4: In the Social Studies classroom, sourcing is a critical skill, so when we are doing an activity I try to cite all my sources, most of which are books that I have read. If I have the inspirational book, I pass it around the classroom so they can feel the ideas. #LeadLAP
A4: I really like the Secret Society of Readers and Book Prom ideas I’ve heard from @TechNinjaTodd. This is something I’m interested in implementing. #LeadLAP
A3: Borrowing ideas from this chat!! Free little library, birthday books, books around every corner!! Yes!! This summer Ss were bussed to public library to have access while our school is under construction! #LeadLAP

@mandyeellis A4: Last year as my #whatsyour17 promise, I promised to give 17 people books and bookmarks to colleagues and Ss. Maybe I will continue it and ask those kids to pass the book on to someone else with a message in it. #LeadLAP#LeadLit
We do this at the end of each school year and call it the Summer Book Swap. Students shop with @BNBuzz bags and info about our Summer Reading Challenge is in the bag. Everyone goes home with 3-4 books to read over the summer that were self-selected! #LEADlap#LeadLIT
A4: Add book tastings to regularly scheduled parent nights and the book fair. Sharing more on social media and encouraging P's & S's to do the same. Asking some of my favorite authors to do hangouts with different classes. So many fun things to plan! #leadlap#LeadLit
A4: Our first family night is all about literacy. We talk to parents and caregivers about the importance of reading and how to get the most out of that time with their children. We have "celebration days" throughout the year which are based on literature. #LeadLAP
A4: when I was a learning Coach, a teacher used Wonder in her class. I got a message from the author that she was writing a new book and needed precepts from students. 2 students from my school made it into the book. #leadlap#LEADLIT
A4: I love going into classrooms and reading to students. We do this less often with older students but they still need to hear great stories read aloud! #LeadLAP
No, I just work where my students are and what they’re interested in. The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Mercy Watson read aloud hooked so many of my learners. #leadlap#leadlit
Yes! I started playing my S's fav tunes as they walk in. It's amazing the diff little things like that can make. I get requests on what to play & check out the lyrics, so they're learning to think about what they listen to before requesting it. #leadlap

Just had an idea-I have a houseful (4 girls ages 11-6, who are avid readers). I should start digging through books that they've all read & bring them to school for Ss to read/borrow/have. This chat is inspiring this Band T & book lover to take it a step further! #Leadlit#LeadLAP
A5: At my previous school, we had book cabinets for Ss to use one day a week. They could borrow as many as they wanted, and could exchange them weekly. Plus, Ts were there so we could check in and see how summer was going. It was really powerful! #LeadLAP#LeadLIT
A4: Scholastic Book Fairs, Family Reading and making nights, Breakout EDU activities around books, monthly assemblies with reading celebrations, principal read alouds, Teacher book clubs! #ReadingIsMyJam#LeadLAP
Good morning #leadlap! Nili Bartley from MA-Sorry to be jumping on so super late! A4 Ss went absolutely crazy when our amazing reading coach launched March Madness-I've never seen Ss so out of control excited about reading & the moment they announced the winner was priceless:)
Hi Tim, the way I’ve seen it done is students collectively pick 64 different books for the tournament and vote for winners in each match up ala the tourney bracket for basketball up until a championship booknia crowned. Seen visual brackets posted in common areas. #LeadLAP

A5: How about a school movie night? Find a movie based on a book {Because of Winn Dixie?} and host the event at your local theater. Or have it at school. Drop down the big screen, pop some popcorn & invite families to bring blankets! #leadlap
A4 Our district does a book tournament. It was so exciting to see our kids reading & talking about these books! Our librarian @ImAllBooked is amazing! #LeadLAP
A5 great question? We aren't doing anything that I'm aware of this is a great opportunity to build relationships and create learning opportunities, promote literacy and with the technology available today this could be done rather easily. #LeadLAP
Very true. Some pushback. I did it as a teacher and found so much value. Almost 15 years later, it’s the one thing parents remember. That I came to their house. #leadlap#leadlit
Q5: We always work with AP kids for summer reading, but we tend to overlook the majority of our Ss. How can I pull in all students to extend that love of reading over the summer? #LeadLAP
A4: Our kids were really excited when we finished the book and put on our own play. That's how we put on the Chinese classics " Legend of the White Snake" in front of the whole school and everyone loved it. Kids are born to love perform and share!#LeadLAP#LeadLIT#TLAP
A5: I don't really do anything with the students over summer. The only thing over summer is the AP Physics 1 assignment that I give my upcoming students which would force them to do some reading. #LeadLAP
A5: so the original plan was to read tons of middle school books & tweet using #mmmsreads - except... #DBC50Summer happened and now I’m tweeting with adults instead. Traveling for work a TON this summer but have had open media center days in the past. #LeadLAP
A4(2):There is also a time honored storytelling element that is often forgotten in today’s high stakes history classrooms. I read to my students. Great speeches, quotes and life lessons from history help the Ss tap into that ancient tradition of storytelling. #LeadLAP

My dad and I do it every year as a way to try to explore new books / for a little challenge. He's retired, and definitely hits blackout bingo! I usually get about 2/3 done. I blogged about it + created a template: https://t.co/3HEQnwvKIL#LeadLAP
A3:Finding amazing texts by amazing authors is key for Ss engagement. A text that makes kids tell ask parents"Can you buy this book for me."Trying to get a copy for every kid is important, but a one book read aloud can be just impacting w/ limited access to it! #leadlap#Leadlit
A5: I know the librarian at my school is opened every Tuesday to promote STEM, but other than that there aren't any activities at my school. The city promotes summer reading programs at the library though. #leadlap

A5: As a parent, I always appreciate receiving information about local summer reading programs or summer literacy events. A compiled list is helpful for me as a parent, so providing that to parents is something I see as valuable. #LeadLAP
A5) A few teachers have done activities at a center and I set my kids up on scholastic digital reading log before they left and reminded them about the library summer reading program #LeadLAP
I've had a classroom Instagram for about 4 years now, but only in the last year started posting about books + not class-specific stuff (eg: if I go to the @sandiegozoo and learn something new) #LeadLAP#LeadLIT
A5: Ss live and communicate in a connected world. Love the idea of summer #booksnaps or virtual #booktalks Also, good for educators to be role models with literacy in Summer. Participate or help facilitate in a book study #LeadLAP
A4: my number one goal as a learning Coach was to have teachers read books kids read. We did a book club and read several books and did activities that teachers could take back to their classroom. We even Skyped with an author. #leadlap#leadlit
I'm amazed at what can be learned from Ts in other grades & content...and admins. All it takes is the ability to transfer a great idea into a different context. #leadlap
A5: Also, started a targeted summer reading club with at-risk Ss grades k-2. Had a kickoff to get them excited the last week of school. They got 4 books, writing journal, a reading calendar, phone calls/postcards from me and the Principal throughout the summer. #leadlap#leadlit
A5. This idea is a simple one, but students like it. We have a bag of books program for summer. Readers can check out a bag of books in late May and return them when school starts. #leadlap
Have to definitely share the power of the bday books that @mandyeellis has put out. I did this with our middle schoolers and staff this year and it was amazing! #LeadLAP
SO much fun! Bought pizza and they brought their own drink. Watched Hugo. Also went to see Wonder & A Wrinkle in Time together after school when we finished reading those books together. #LeadLAP
A5: A colleague of mine polls our staff and finds their favorite books to create a summer reading list for our kids. Some are content related and some are not. The list says more about our staff than their bios ever could. #LeadLAP
I did a weekly check-in each week with Ss during the year, and they asked me to continue the check ins over the summer. I did the first one two weeks ago, and I had 21 students respond within the first 30 minutes of posting. I will post the second one on Monday. #LeadLAP#LeadLIT

A6 I think a lotof the the DBC books are so relevent and inspiring when Ts show an interest in those topics or any topic and there is a good book out there it is a great time to gift them a book. Build on that enthusiasm and create even more momentum #LeadLAP
A6) I would love to gift #KidsDeserveIt to teachers who come to our building or Ts on their birthday. I would love to end the year gifting my Ss a book that fits their interests that they can read over the summer then review for me on flipgrid #dreams#LeadLAP
A6: @dbc_inc books> “Pick a book, any book”... for ANY occasion! Oh it’s pizza day in the cafeteria? Here’s a book! Oh, a blue car just pulled up in the carline? Here’s a book! Did you scarf down lunch in 15 min today? Here’s a book! #LeadLAP
Yes! I have posted different educational resources in addition to school info and “good news”. We have received a ton of great feedback with our page. Staff buy in too. #LeadLap.
A5 Can't wait to do this more with Ss but focused on Ts staying connected through reading #lcinnovation this summer through a book study on Google Classroom, Twitter, & face to face-17 of us so far which is certainly enough to make an impact w/Ss & bond over the book:) #leadlap
A6: two I have constantly given is Wonder and the One and Only Ivan. But there are so many. It’s great to know the teacher well, and gift him/her a book that they need! Its all about relationships. #leadlit#leadlap
A6: My principal @MrPehrson gifts a book to the whole staff every year. The first was Creating Innovators by @DrTonyWagner the second was The Innovators Mindset by @gcouros and this year its Empower by @ajjuliani. #LeadLAP
A5: Also each student in my class could 'buy' books from my class library with their class money at the end of the year. (Books I was donating to the local #LittleFreeLibrary) #leadlap
A6: 2nd year teachers get learn Like a Pirate; 3rd year teachers get Kids Deserve It; I’m planning to continue this so that after they have been in our district awhile, they have a great professional library that is motivating! #LeadLAP
A6: I think any book is a good book. For the @bfes_ltps staff I just gave them Discipline with Dignity - a goal we are working on. But I love the Energy Bus for both adults and kids #LeadLAP
That’s where idea for #Read4Fun came in. Ts encourage reading for Ss but they don’t have time to read! Start with just 15 mins a day and the habit starts to form. Amazing how many share they missed it! #leadLAP

@mandyeellis A6:@SaiaStacy and @TheCounselorCh1 & I have a small book rotation that flows between us that trickles to others. Stacy has an amazing collection of @dbc_inc that are open to all to borrow & write in. The only books I dont lend out are autographed #LeadLAP#LeadLit
A6: Last year for Christmas we bought staff #KidsDeserveIt! When a local church asked what they could purchase for our lounge, I asked them to donate to this purchase. 6 families ended up paying for ALL of the books! Amazing gift!! We also had a T book swap last year! #LeadLAP
A4: Story Clubs have been my students’ favorite. They build relationships by creating answers to their “Club Challenge.” They have choices about how their group shows proficiency: quote explanation, visual summary, which get posted on our class Instagram page. #LeadLAP#LeadLIT
Q3: I would like some ideas on this one-especially when it comes to my department (#PE & #Health). I know our English department has a popular non-fiction section in several classrooms, unlike the library Ss can pull books off those shelves and keep them longer.

A6 I love any of the @dbc_inc books and often will gift a book or two to colleagues and new teachers. For Ss, I love picking up books to give from local resell shops. Every student picks a book at Christmas and end of year they want. #Leadlit#LeadLAP
A6: I also give our admin team a new book every year-last year was Lead like a Pirate; this year is StrengthsBased Leadership and 5Languages of Appreciation. #LeadLAP
A6 When Ts participate in our Book Study they receive the book! I love to give away books as door prizes or just for fun! Our office has a shelf of extras that people can take or borrow any time! #LeadLAP

A6: I would gift staff the book “Uniquely Human: a different way of seeing autism” by Barry Prizant. Wonderful book. It truly shifts your way of thinking. Strength-based and compassionate. #LeadLAP
A7: We had a Breakfast with Books event in class awhile back. Invited kids to come in early for a scheduled author live web event with Kate DiCamillo. Parents brought in yummy food. Most successful class party! #leadlap#booksareworthit

A1: I built rain gutter bookshelves in my principal's office across the whole wall, so kids can see covers easily. I also frequently ask kids about what they are reading or about their favorite recent reads. It's a great way to get to know kids. #LeadLit#LeadLAP
A7: It's important to remember that in my community we serve many families who cannot afford books at home. Encouraging w/out shaming is critical. Use of classroom, school & public libraries is highly recommended. #LeadLAP
A7: I’d like to have a parent night where we help teach them how to read with their kids at home. Too often we assume parents know this already. #LeadLAP
We're all better together. We need to be saying the same thing about the imp of reading. Hopefully, the more they hear that message, the more effective the message will be. #LeadLAP
A4: Story Clubs have been my students’ favorite. They build relationships by creating answers to their “Club Challenge.” They have choices about how their group shows proficiency: quote explanation, visual summary, which get posted on our class Instagram page. #LeadLAP#LeadLIT
A6 As soon as I keep growing my collection l'll definitely gift books for my colleagues, but until then I lend & recommend like crazy. I make time in the day to be near my collection in the workroom so I can see Ts-my line is usually "I have the perfect book for you:)" #leadlap
A7 I’ve been using Fiction Express @fictionexpress with group of boys who are reluctant readers. They can access this at home and have loved it. They have been truly engaged. #LeadLAP
@mandyeellis A7:I have always stressed the importance with Ss, families, friends, & my family. The only way to become a good reader is to read, Read, READ. I challenge people to let me find a high interest novel for them. Haven't been wrong yet (jinx self 😔) #LeadLAP#LeadLit
A7: I have had many conversations with parents about letting children choose what they want to read because the biggest difference between good and poor readers is not what they read but how much. (Bring on the comics, graphic novels, instruction manuals...) #LeadLAP
Q7: As a classroom T, I had beg. of year data chats on reading levels/reading interests with my Ss' parents. I still encourage my Ts to practice this--it helps build relationships quickly and encourages reading at home. #LeadLAP
A7: I don't assign homework. Instead I encourage free choice reading. I share book recommendations and reading successes with families and have a class wishlist on Amazon. #LeadLAP
#LeadLAP So many ideas from this chat. I am excited to try Birthday books, book of the month on social media or our webpage, and getting more books into the hands of students.
I agree that inspiration is key. When Ts are so overwhelmed with work, it's hard to feel the importance of keeping up with the profession. Families must still come first. #LeadLAP
I suggested to one that her 10 year old daughter read to her while she was cooking dinner. She had never thought about that before. You never know! #LeadLAP
A6 continued: With transitions, 2/3 of staff are being split b/w 3 elementaries in the fall. We had Ts on remaining teams choose a book that defined team member and write a dedication in book to remain in our library. #LeadLAP
A1: I talk about my current read. I post to my class Instagram a photo & quote for each book. I post a note outside my classroom with the #whatimreading hashtag. I add the books to my classroom library or give them to teachers. No more hoarding them at home. 📚 #leadLAP#edchat
A7: Working w/SpEd most of my career, this has always been a challenge. Telling P's even comic books count seemed like a shock to them. Also, reading aloud shouldn't stop in 1st grade. #LeadLAP
#LeadLIT#LeadLAP@kendrafisher82 A5: Sent home reading workbook; Throughout the summer- in progress of writing notes to send to students to encourage reading and working on summer newsletters.

A7: using book clubs and reading incentive programs and frankly whatever it takes to get kids to read all the way through high school I’ll try—thanks for all the ideas everyone! #leadlap

I agree! Great idea. @christinekdixon and @teachseuss have started staff professional lending libraries at their schools. Made Amazon lists for parents at their schools to donate to their staff. ❤️ this idea! #LeadLAP

A7 I think the biggest success I had w/my Ss came with treating them like adults when it came to reading (and more:)-we discussed like crazy, chatted online about books we read together, & made it relevant by always sharing how we were impacted by the author and story. #leadlap
