Welcome to #BookCampPD
I am Meredith Johnson, your moderator. Thank you for being here!
Please introduce yourself, share where you are from and let us know if you have read the book (not necessary for chat) #StartWithWhy
Hi! My name is Derrick Schellenberg. I live a little ways north of Toronto, in Ontario, Canada. I have not read the whole book. I have seen the TED talk and a number of other talks given by Simon Sinek. #bookcamppd
I need your help in trying something new in order to help Twitter chats evolve. Chat will shift from using Q1, Q2 to sharing resources. Can links shared, along w/ tweets about this book, spark your learning? At end of chat, please share your thoughts. #BookCampPD
Thank you!!
During the chat you will be following 5 steps that could bring you closer to understanding your WHY.
You can answers the questions, make notes at home, or reflect on the steps - whatever you like.
These steps are from Simon Sinek and shared on his web page. #BookCampPD
During this chat we are going to try something a 'ittle different.
Are you ready?

First step ....
Make a list of your 3 closest friends. These are people you trust and love unconditionally; the people you could call at 3 AM with a dilemma, people you would travel around the world to help.
If you wish you can share their names or write them down. #BookCampPD
Step two ...
At some point in the future, you're going to ask those people, why are you friends with me?
Please share what you think they will say or jot down some private notes to yourself.
#BookCampPD
Typical reasons why one of the people might say they were friends with me might include that I listen, that I am dependable, that I try not to judge others, that I don't make the conversations about me (except for this Tweet, of course :). #BookCampPD

As Simon Sinek says, in these initial questions, we focus on the qualities of a friend that could be applied to friendships or relationships in general, as opposed to specific qualities of one person. #BookCampPD
Knowing you only through #BookCampPD chats, I would say something about your attention to details and ability to express your thoughts very clearly in writing. #BookCampPD

Step 2: Honestly, I don't know what they would say. I would guess they might say that I'm not judgmental, I'm loyal, and I'm genuine. Hmmmmmm. #bookcampPd
Step three ..
They'll keep saying things like, “I don’t know. This is a hard question.” Just let them keep talking. Keep quiet, keep listening, & most of all, let them keep struggling to find the right words.
What will be the most challenging part of keeping quiet?
#BookCampPD
We often focus on the "what" which is not inspiring, instead of focusing on the why. If they why resonates with other people, then you can inspire others, empowering them to seek their own why, giving them purpose. #bookcamppd
Thank you, Meredith. Your insight is more precise than how people supposedly start this exercise. It shows that you have thought beyond the general and moved to the specific (and I appreciate it). #bookcamppd
You have to let them do the work. You can ask questions and push them to dig deeper. It will be uncomfortable, but getting to something meaningful often is. It may even be emotional when you truly think of what is important about your friend. #BookCampPD
Step Four ..
Since you’ve likely never had this conversation with your friend before, use your curiosity about the things they’ve shared to ask more questions to clarify what they mean.
What questions could you ask to get them to clarify what they mean?
#BookCampPD
I like the idea of communicating the importance of reading, framed by the ideas in Start With Why. Too often we tell students what to do, instead of inspiring by teaching them the why. Why helps give meaning and purpose. https://t.co/nkwaxqYirq#BookCampPD
Step three: I wouldn't be comfy asking for someone to share what he/she believes to be positive about me. It feels like fishing, and I would feel awkward with the silence of waiting. Worse yet, what if they can't come up with anything? 🤣 #bookcampPd
Daniel Pink's Drive doesn't just focus on why. It focuses on Mastery, Autonomy, and Purpose. This is one reason why teachers like to teach: they evolve their mastery, they have some autonomy in their class, and teaching gives purpose. https://t.co/9N1yVEUjxI#bookcamppd
There were definitely be some awkwardness. Maybe if it was an exchange, as opposed to just asking someone to praise what is special in you, both people would feel more comfortable. #bookcamppd
Final Step ...
Compare
Once you’ve discovered what you have that your friends don’t get from anyone else, you’re 1 step closer to articulating your WHY & what it is that you naturally do to make your mark in the world.
Would you like to try this? Why or why not?

I would be interested in trying the 4 steps. As I read through last night and again today I feel as this will be challeging in many ways. However, learning from it all would be interesting. I wonder if whay I think my why is would come out that way from my friends. #bookcampPd
Please share your thoughts about this chat's slight shift. Did you learn more from the resources that were shared? Was your sharing and collaborating w/ others different? Would you like this to occasionally be the format?
Thank you for your honesty! #BookCampPD
I feel as I know my why. Just don't think it would come across the same from others. I really need to get the book. Trying to listen just really isn't working for me, I am not the best auditory processer. #BookCampPD
What I hope people would say is that I like to help people learn, I try to make learning enjoyable, and just as we want people who enjoy reading through their lives, we want to inspire others to be capable of determining and leading their own learning. #BookCampPD
