Welcome to #MTedchat! Our topic tonight is “Getting Personal with Professional Learning!” Please take a moment to introduce yourself: name, role, and location.
Q1: How can you structure YOUR professional learning to be part of your teaching/leading/coaching? How would it differ from your experiences? #MTedchat
A1) I structure my learning with flexible platforms such as Twitter and Flipgrid. I'm often more inspired to try something the next day and share how it went. #mtedchat
Q1: How can you structure YOUR professional learning to be part of your teaching/leading/coaching? How would it differ from your experiences? #MTedchat
A1: I would focus on just a few high leverage instructional techniques. Sometimes focusing on too many things at once can overload us and then we do nothing because we are paralyzed by analysis (I speak from experience!) #MTedchat
A1 I think goal setting is an important part of a professional learning structure. I'm working on focusing my PD right now to meet my short and long term goals as a coach #mtedchat
A1 I love learning so I tend to go to a lot of PD, but when I do need to scale back for whatever reason, I make sure to attend things that I am interested in implementing/improving for the benefit of my Ss. This way I'm more likely to take action with what I learn #mtedchat
A1: I make an effort to seek out PD that I can directly use and implement right away. I enjoy sharing what I've learned along the way, if people are interested. #mtedchat
A1 I try to learn something new every night on Twitter. I also love taking online classes. The @edtechteam Teacher Leader Cohort was INCREDIBLE and helped me become a better leader and teacher. #mtedchat
A1.b when I lead PD, I incorporate strategies that can be taken back into the classroom and am sure the read the room and adjust as needed, like I would in my classroom #mtedchat
A1 I think to structure your learning so it is on going, Twitter, reading, reading, reading and then to be willing to try new things and grow and develop your craft each day. I also think your experiences in the classroom guide the topics of PD you seek as you reflect. #MTedchat
Great reflection here Kimberly. I do the same thing. For this reason I am trying to read fewer books more in depth rather than just hopping around from article to article, but it's so hard! #MTedchat
A1: I learned early from my days substitute teaching that I can learn something from every classroom I'm in. Sometimes you learn what to do...sometimes what not to do. I've carried that with me across all the systems of education I've experienced. Observe/Reflect #mtedchat
Q1: How can you structure YOUR professional learning to be part of your teaching/leading/coaching? How would it differ from your experiences? #MTedchat
Q2: We are learning more and more how powerful using video can be with students… How can you use video as a tool in professional learning? Who could you work with to support these methods? #MTedchat
I am glad you mentioned this because I subbed for 7 years and this was one of the best parts of subbing. ALL the ideas! I often carried my camera with me and took pictures. #mtedchat
Yes, to reading. Today I made reference to something and surprised someone. I said it's bc I read a lot. Although, I don't read nearly as much as some others I know or how much I wish I could. I do think Twitter has made the prices easier with access to tidbits & links #mtedchat
I agree completely... I'm finally back to listening to one audio book (I commute) a month and one professional book as I need throughout the year. I'm a hungry learner and it is hard to shut down. #mtedchat
A2) I can have the courage video myself again and review it. My Ss SeeSaw and sometimes I hear myself on their videos and it makes me realize I have to ALWAYS be thinking of how I am saying things! #mtedchat
Q2: We are learning more and more how powerful using video can be with students… How can you use video as a tool in professional learning? Who could you work with to support these methods? #MTedchat
Exactly... It is the personal learning part that becomes more emotionally inspiring because of the relationships we build. We literally SEE what is happening in each others spaces through what we each share #mtedchat
It's so hard because as you said - our minds are endlessly open for new information. I have to always remind myself that depth > breadth sometimes! #MTedchat
A2 I used a video today in my PD. I had participates not notes as they watched and discussed in partnerships after. They had great feedback about the video. #mtedchat
Definitely!! I find I need to either have a system to keep me accountable..If reflecting is an independent process...journal, calendar, etc... If with a coach or friend, I need a weekly meetup over coffee ;) #mtedchat
A2 I’ve been using flipgrid to video our mini lessons in reading. 1 I have some goals I’m working on and videoing the lessons helps me reflect. 2 students have access to the grid and go back and watch the mini lesson at anytime. #MTedchat
A2.b as part of my job, we're filming some of our teachers. This way PD is free (no paying for subs) and easily accessible for those who want to see teachers in action with certain techniques #mtedchat
A2 I record a "webchat" for Ts every Monday. Watching them as I edit them for YouTube is painful at times but provides an opportunity for reflection and growth #mtedchat
A2: Videos work great for giving quick visual examples to my students.
Ex: Convection currents in the mantle
This helps then better understand vocab/concepts
As far as for myself...I really prefer to read to learn than to watch a video
#mtedchat
I dislike writing and have never been a journalist so Twitter and Flipgrid are great platforms for me to reflect with. I also like to talk. A lot. #mtedchat
A2: I like videos because they really help you study your practice. Whether that is Ss studying themselves, or Ts. Self reflection can help a person grow SO much! #mtedchat
Q2: We are learning more and more how powerful using video can be with students… How can you use video as a tool in professional learning? Who could you work with to support these methods? #MTedchat
A2: Didn't read the question quite right the first time...
Short quick videos demonstrating a teaching technique are very helpful. Keep it short and sweet
#mtedchat
Q3: This quote below resonates… How can we, as educators, ensure ALL PD is relevant and engaging? Are there ways you can influence decisions made regarding meeting professional goals? #MTedchat
A3 Oh, such a great quote! SO very, very true! One of the biggest challenges of planning good PD for Ts is making sure I don't waste their time. For my own PD, I try to make sure I'm keeping my goals/intentions and intended outcomes close at hand. #mtedchat
Q3: This quote below resonates… How can we, as educators, ensure ALL PD is relevant and engaging? Are there ways you can influence decisions made regarding meeting professional goals? #MTedchat
A3: To make PD relevant, it helps to make it broad (ex: effective teaching strategies https://t.co/FSvHYsBqLO) and then give break out time where individual departments can talk about how/why to apply certain approaches.
General approach to specific contexts
#mtedchat
A3 again in my PD today... we hit on how some Ts might not be aware of what is relevant (pop culture) & perhaps there should be a district wide PD opp Co-led with Ss teaching in this. Our teaching should be best practices & part of that includes being relevant to the Ss #mtedchat
A2: I love using video for lesson study. You can work with a team teacher or another colleague to critique the lesson and it's components as a way to ensure improvement for next time... Were all students engaged? Why or why not... Was I organized enough? #mtedchat
Q2: We are learning more and more how powerful using video can be with students… How can you use video as a tool in professional learning? Who could you work with to support these methods? #MTedchat
A3 oh how this strikes a cord! I think PD can be used to raise questions about current practices, lead towards revelations, support change, and support teachers as they grow and develop their skills. But who and how does one plan this? Teachers!?#MTedchat
Yes!!! Love this... I'll look into it more after the chat. All PD must fit into the bigger picture. How does it support district goals? School? Personal professional? Students must be at the center... then plan forward... #mtedchat
I got in the habit of recording my observation lessons. 1. It carved out the time for me to do this the if v send reflection 2. I was able to reference the video in my post conference #mtedchat
A3: I think it is impossible to ensure that ALL PD is relevant when districts mandate what you attend, but you can always work to make sure that you work to get one new idea/concept/something out of it. #mtedchat
YESSS... Teachers leading the direction of PD choices makes so much sense... If it isn't directly, it is essential to get the voice of all teachers involved so they can influence planning. #mtedchat
Q4: Building and maintaining a strong digital learning network is not intuitive to all… How do you choose who to follow? How can you bring new people into the network? #MTedchat
Q3: This quote below resonates… How can we, as educators, ensure ALL PD is relevant and engaging? Are there ways you can influence decisions made regarding meeting professional goals? #MTedchat
A4) I like to tell and show ways I have benefited from an online PLN. For example, I have read more education related books in the last year b/c of my digital PLN than I have since college. #mtedchat
Q4: Building and maintaining a strong digital learning network is not intuitive to all… How do you choose who to follow? How can you bring new people into the network? #MTedchat
A4 I participate in a lot chats, reading through responses and then going to ppl's pages who interest me. I can then read their other post that aren't made in the chat and see who they follow. Real creeper style 🤷🏻♀️😂 #mtedchat
A3: I was fortunate to find myself on curriculum review committees early in my career... I believe that stepping into those kinds of responsibilities helped me gain my voice to ask for what I needed. If what is happening doesn't support your student's learning, say so. #mtedchat
Q3: This quote below resonates… How can we, as educators, ensure ALL PD is relevant and engaging? Are there ways you can influence decisions made regarding meeting professional goals? #MTedchat
A4 I always follow MT Ts, but "who I follow" has changed as my work/interests have changed. Lately I've looked for other Tech Coaches and Ts who deliver PD #MTedchat
A4 I follow people who not only are like-minded, but also ones who challenge my thinking, so I approach learning and teaching in new ways. Twitter exposes me to all sorts of professionals I would not have known before. #mtedchat
A3: I think it is impossible to ensure that ALL PD is relevant when districts mandate what you attend, but you can always work to make sure that you work to get one new idea/concept/something out of it. #mtedchat
A4: To choose who I follow, I find professors and see what they tweet. I also happen upon various #edchat and follow people who make me think
I try to bring people into the network by tweeting interesting/helpful content. If you think I have been interesting, follow me! #mtedchat
I appreciate a balanced approach. It is imp to have some common time to ensure all know district/school vision, and overarching goals...but majority of pd must be determined by what the building team(s) and individuals need to grow. Foster teacher leadership/mentoring #mtedchat
A4 I like to follow a wide variety of educators because sometimes you need access to a perspective different than your own. It helps me relate better with some people in my building. #MTedchat
I agree that it is important to surround yourself (di9gitally or in person) with educators that challenge your thinking I think that is how we grow as educators. #mtedchat
A4: I follow people who provide new ideas, intuitive thoughts, and give inspiration!! I follow forward thinkers and those who are positive. I think it can be hard to bring new people in. #mtedchat
A4: I follow teachers, professional organizations, and bloggers that post current relevant information in my field, but I try to diversify by following these people in many different locations all over the world. #mtedchat
Q5: We have all experienced moments in our own personal learning where we have been disengaged. Those moments are truly a waste of critical time. What can YOU do to re-engage or take control of YOUR professional growth? #MTedchat
I have found that as well... My PLN has evolved... What I love is that it is full of colleagues w/such varied roles. Every now and then I do have to go through the list I follow and 'prune'... I don't like too much noise... Self-promoters, lecturers... no more... #mtedchat
Q5: We have all experienced moments in our own personal learning where we have been disengaged. Those moments are truly a waste of critical time. What can YOU do to re-engage or take control of YOUR professional growth? #MTedchat
Q4: Building and maintaining a strong digital learning network is not intuitive to all… How do you choose who to follow? How can you bring new people into the network? #MTedchat
A5: I find that when I am disengaged, I am burning out. The best way for me to re-engage is to read about education. This always gives me new ideas and refreshes me.
#mtedchat
A5 I've had to engage in some self talk to figure why I've disengaged from PD. Sometimes its as simple as getting a drink or having snack. Other times it's b/c I need to use the "law of two feet" #MTedchat
A4: I try to find someone at every conference newish to Twitter so I can show them how they can use a conference hashtag to follow multiple sessions. I find that hooks dormant users as it shows a real purpose. #mtedchat
Q4: Building and maintaining a strong digital learning network is not intuitive to all… How do you choose who to follow? How can you bring new people into the network? #MTedchat
A5 At times I think it's appropriate to prose a question to the facilitator. Other times look for additional research that I can reframe a point the facilitator is making. #mtedchat
A5: I feel like I am always growing professionally, each day brings something new. I welcome it, embrace it and learn from it. Enjoy it. But I want to make sure that I am doing what it is best for my needs, whatever that is. #mtedchat
A5 scale back. Focus on some positives in your classroom and continue to foster those things and find one small thing to focus on to improve. Sometimes I get overwhelmed with trying to improve too many things at once. #MTedchat
I find those times are when I need to make sure to focus on the biggest stress areas and get them under control. Lesson networking and minimize the noise a bit. Maybe find a new project or inspiration to draw me back up again #mtedchat
I agree.... I used to keep Facebook as my personal space and Twitter as professional.... Lots of crossover though because the educators I find here are true and real friends, just like those in my real world. Facebook, I share some edu... here I discuss. #mtedchat
Yes... I also find a productive backchannel can help. I often open my computer to research the same topic being presented on and share out the resources on Twitter. I'm still engaged, just in a different way. #mtedchat
Q6: Digital learning, distance learning, place-based learning, field trips, self-paced MOOCs, book study, lesson study...SO many options… What has been YOUR BEST PD experience? Why? #MTedchat
I use FB just for fun use. I have 2 Twitter accounts- personal and professional. I follow a mix of insta but typically only post 'good' photos on my account, so more personal. Every app has a general purpose so I can manage what I want to see and when. #mtedchat
A6 I feel like I say this a lot, but it's true. National Board Certification was the BEST PD for me. It led me greater reflection and understanding. I came out of it a changed person. #mtedchat
A6) I attended the TCRWP Homegrown institute for reading and writing. I learned A LOT in a week! I also have found the #innovatingplay PLN on Twitter AND Flipgrid. #mtedchat
Q6: Digital learning, distance learning, place-based learning, field trips, self-paced MOOCs, book study, lesson study...SO many options… What has been YOUR BEST PD experience? Why? #MTedchat
A6 I think Twitter and reading many of @dbc_inc books has pushed me to grow more than any other PD because of the personal choice and to see the results in my classroom with my Ss after implementing things learned in those two places. I’m hoping to add TLI to the list! #MTedchat
A6: I've said it once, and I'll say it again...#edcampbigsky!!! I love edcamp, it is all participant driven. You choose what you want to learn about! I've learned and implemented so many great things- @breakoutEDU, @Seesaw, @Flipgrid, and more! Attend one people!!#mtedchat
A6 I mean I love field trips & travel 😃 The majority of my Master's was online distant learning, which worked for me. I could work ahead when I needed but there were also collaborative structures in places. #mtedchat
