CatholicEdChat is a twitter chat. Topics focus on discussions around educational issues for Catholic Educators and topics beneficial to Catholic Schools. We look forward to continuing to connect Catholic Educators online to discuss education and teaching with faith in our schools. The chat takes place on Saturday mornings. Time 9am EST.
A1: with the help of former colleagues I use objective based assessments. Using those objectives for each section it helps me monitor how they will progress to the final assessment #CatholicEdChat
We are looking forward to the conference this June. We have a great line-up of presenters to really help us think about how comprehensive assessment programs can assist in improving overall student academic performance. #catholicedchat
A1. I look at missed answers. Were their obvious gaps in learning? Did we lack mastery over certain concepts? Or, was the assessment format the problem? There is so much that can be gleaned from even a simple assessment. #catholicedchat
#CatholicEdChat A1 Important to identify the purpose. In New South Wales, our Government Syllabus documents name Assessment Of, For and As Learning. Assessment For Learning is formative & can be conducted in every lesson-observing Ss, Quiz, Qs, all feedback Ts & Ss
A1 I assess whether students can perform a particular technology skill (i.e., type a certain speed, design a certain 3D shape, create a video), and if they can't then they learn from their errors and try again with support. #CatholicEdChat
It is great that you look at this level of detail to determine not only the student learning, but the effectiveness of the instruction and of the assessment itself. #catholicedchat
@KJFMLR and I were in the same department this was big for us. Each teacher would share their data based off our objectives so we could see those โgaps.โ We could revisit those or restructure a lesson. #CatholicEdChat
#CatholicEdChat A1 Assessment Of Learning is Summative & will tell Ts & Ss what should have been done. Assessment As Learning means all types of Assessment should have the potential for Ss to learn from.
Five years ago, Pope Francis was elected to be an agent of change within a church shaken by scandals. He quickly became a global force, and even non-Catholics adored him. But today, Francis is increasingly embattled. https://t.co/4yqO176KaY
A1: As an ELA teacher, I do a lot of my assessment through conferences and journal entries. I get great instant feedback from both. Both allow me to see where gaps are and both help my kids and I craft goals that work for them #catholicedchat
A1: Tying learning objectives to questions on @Schoology tests can help ensure that when we look at data from tests it goes beyond single questions & helps focus on mastery of concepts. #catholicedchat

A1: Assessments "for" learning are more powerful than assessments "of" learning. Pre-assessment drives instruction with daily mini check ins. This work is not easy...but when done well it transforms student outcomes. #catholicedchat
A1.2: interestingly, in social studies I find that I can catch gaps in historical knowledge/thinking better when they use video response apps like @Flipgrid or @RecapThat. #catholicedchat
You must build tremendous trust among teachers to check their ego when sharing their data. Cannot be about me or my students. Must be about us and OUR students.
#catholicedchat
Exactly! As mentioned previously, Formative & Summative Assessment should be designed not just as a task but an opportunity to learn. It requires a changed mindset. #catholicedchat
Agreed. Our Principal teaches 1 class of AP-USH and has Ss submit 30 sec video on Recap sharing what they learned from an assignment. Much easier to catch misunderstanding & more meaningful than grading a worksheet. #catholicedchat

A2 I'd love to learn different strategies on how to grade assessments (how to write and use rubrics effectively, any other ways to grade) and how to grade and feedback efficiently. #CatholicEdChat
A2: my boss @KJFMLR just said it best your ego has to put aside for whatโs best for OUR students. For me I always want to learn where I can improve. #CatholicEdChat
"Assessment should be designed not just as a task but an opportunity to learn" How can we get Ts to make this shift? Move away from 'grading what they know, and moving on'.
Thanks David. #catholicedchat

YES! I think itโs also a comfort level too? They will tell me so much more orally than they will with written responses in social studies. Really helps me catch confusion early! #catholicedchat
A2 I'd like to learn about how to use technology to share assessment results in a parent-friendly report that doesn't take a lot of time to create. Saw this in a Marzano book and would like to see how something like it could be generated. #CatholicEdChat
Bad habits of teachers? or bad habits of students? or both? Too many Ts see changes as 'another thing'. We need to support them so they can see it's a 'different & better thing' for their Ss. Move focus away from points and into learning. #catholicedchat
What a great point! I was trying to make a Google Spreadsheet and got weighed down on creating it and my son helped me! LOL #CatholicEdChat I really need to get my Google Certification.
Iโm working on a webinar called โTools To Save Time In Your Classroomโ actually! Iโve stumbled upon a bunch and Iโm putting them all together! #CatholicEdChat
I am trying to get my students to see assessments, particularly formative, not as an end product, but as a part of the process of learning. #CatholicEdChat
Check @OtusK12 They do an amazing job with data and putting into people's hands in clear and concise ways. I'm sure other SIS's also do things like this with standards based, but not sure who & how. #catholicedchat
Thanks for sharing the things you want to learn about. It will be helpful to us in planning moving forward. Many of the topics will be addressed at the New Directions Assessment Conference in June. #catholicedchat#NCEAAssessments
A2: I have much to learn about using digital assessment! This was never my strong suit and as a school leader I feel ill prepared to help others. Seeking any and all resources on this topic! #CatholicEdChat
You're Welcome! Ultimately Ts need to discern how far Ss have travelled academically & how to celebrate that. Really important in Special Needs where the distance can be hard to see but worth celebrating #catholicedchat
A3: TIME! My goal is always to be able to conference face to face with each student at least once a week but it doesnโt always happen between assemblies, half days, etc etc ๐ญ #catholicedchat
I once heard Sandy Labelle present from her book Teaching Smarter. Good book on improving efficiency in classroom https://t.co/5fnI2H4120#catholicedchat
This is why we need Ts to take advantage of tech more with formative assessment. So much easier for us, & better for Ss to catch and fix misconceptions early, than waiting for a summative test. #catholicedchat

Here is a video prepared by Dr. Gene Kerns, Keynote speaker for the Assessment Conference! The topic is making student agents of their own learning, a critical component of Assessment As Learning #NCEAAssessment@NCEATALKhttps://t.co/lZrKyxiaEb#catholicedchat
I am noticing a lot of great Formative Assessment Tools that are now allowing teachers to tag standards to questions. This gives teachers a view on concept mastery through standards-based reports. @goformative is one, if I remember others Iโll reply back! #CatholicEdchat
Thank you! It's a pleasure. I was Head of Curriculum in 2 of our Schools for a total of 10 years. The last School Gr7-12 enrolment of 1200 Ss. #catholicedchat
I agree that we need to take advantage of the benefit of digital tools in assessment practices. We have several sessions on this at Assessment Conference. One session by rep from Apple and the other by @adkopp76 and Greg Dhuyvetter! #Catholicedchat@NCEATALK

Q4: What types of digital assessments have you found to be
effective? #CatholicEdChat#NCEAAssessment Seems like we have been talking about this one already, but does the group have anything else to add?
That's where GForms & other online assessment tools can help so much. GForms can be used to give immediate feedback when Ss get a question right or wrong using 'response validation' & section breaks. #catholicedchat
A3: Huge assessment challenge, establishing a classroom culture where not everything is "for a grade." Fostering a learning home where risks & failure integral in the learning process.
Fighting the "I'm not going to do it if it's not for points" culture.
#CatholicEdChat
They have been mandated since around 2010 onward as Syllabus Docs were being reviewed. Requires PD to help change the mindset, especially if your State puts an emphasize on State sponsored Standardized Testing re: Literacy & Numeracy #catholicedchat
Timeliness = so critical. Feedback 3 weeks later is meaningless. And saying this as someone who handed things back super late coming back from maternity leave. It helps no one. Part of the answer has to include administrative support re: time #catholicedchat
A4 On a larger scale, we have found the @NWEA MAP to be a powerful tool in assessing students. Still learning how to use the data, but lots of potential there. #CatholicEdChat
I think this is a common issue, but one that is critical for us to overcome as we prepare our students for a future where managing risks & failure will be important for their success! #catholicedchat#NCEAAssessment@NCEATALK

#catholicedchat A4 Observations of Ss can only give impressionistic information. Why not ask them via interview or Google Forms. Also let them use Google Forms to give feedback on your teaching.A class Google site where Ss can blog their thoughts can also be rich #catholicedchat
I love seeing @YouTube being used for education through the use of Tools like EduCanon and EdPuzzle. The ability to embed questions into various types of media helps efficiency, engagement, and cuts down on paper usage! #CatholicEdchat
Agreed. When I was still in the classroom regularly, I began testing voice comments in @Google. Once I learned how to do them well, it was more efficient so the feedback loop was faster ๐๐ป #CatholicEdChat
A3 Right. And piggybacking off of that, teaching Ss how to review and use formative assessments to improve and eventually prepare for summative assessments and not just put these papers in recycling as soon as they are passed back. #CatholicEdChat

It is amazing how much the students use @YouTube ! It easy for them to adapt to this being used in the classroom and likely increases engagement. We are meeting them where they are! ##catholicedchat@NCEATALK#NCEAAssessment

Students have no fear about trial and error in learning to use technology. If we could transfer that to learning in other subject areas, it would go a long way to helping them not fear failure and better become lifelong, independent learners. #catholicedchat
Our Ts use @GetKahoot all the time. When I hear the music, I have been@known to jump in annonomously and compete against the kids. Itโs hilarious listening to them (AND the T) try to figure out which competitor I am! ๐คฃ #funatschool#catholicedchat

Everyone this morning has such good insights on the use of assessment in the classroom. Hope you can join us in Philly to continue the conversation. We will have some round table discussions on Tuesday to help us shape our @NCEATalk strategy moving forward. #catholicedchat
A4 I use Padlet to allow Ss to have discussions on related articles/videos. It's purpose isn't for feedback--I use it more to teach Ss how to behave in an online environment--but the more I use it, the more I feel like I should use it for formative assessment #CatholicEdChat
A5 Our 8th graders write an "I-Search" research paper, and the final section is all about what they learned about themselves as learners. They pull evidence from their journals and cite it as they would any other source. #CatholicEdChat
Important as you head down this path, that all forms of Assessment match to a Learning Outcome(s) & that Assessment is mapped at the faculty & whole school level. A danger of Ss 'drowning in Assessments' at the expense of their learning and material being covered #catholicedchat
In reply to
@pam_bernards, @nsenger, @NWEA, @NCEATALK
We have talked a lot about formative assessment this morning already so I want to jump to...
Q7: How do you assess the religious education learning of
your students? #CatholicEdChat#NCEAAssessment
#catholicedchat A5 Important for Ss to have the capacity to journal about their learning and share it at times. Again Google Forms or Google Docs useful here. #catholicedchat
