#edtech207 chats will cover topics around educational technology in pK to HE environments. Maine moderators will highlight issues that are relevant and timely for enhancing education through the lens of edtech.
Hi #EdTech207! I'm Erin, I'm an English teacher at Oxford Hills High School, and my first experience with coding was learning how to customize Myspace profiles using HTML. #backinmyday
Jeff Bailey, HS Technology Teacher at MVHS in Rumford ME. First Experience coding was probably learning to modify Myspace. Anyone remember that?

A1 I have Ss hide an item then write explicit directions for someone to follow - start at door, turn left, walk 3 steps, etc. It’s very fun and funny to watch where Ss land vs where they meant to be directed #edtech207#logic

A1: I asked students to describe how to get from my classroom (2nd floor) use the elevator and out the front door of the school. Funny how many steps they don't realize in THAT algorithm. #edtech207
A1 Played around with some algorithm instructions on making a PB&J in a PST course last week. A lot of "aha's!" around the use of common language #edtech207
A2: Persistence is totally critical for just about everything! In English class, we deal with all sorts of ideas that are complicated and require grit. I think it's beneficial for kids to learn this any way they can! #EdTech207
Things are going well here. Can't wait to connect with you soon Mia. Speaking of Coding and CS, my daughter is headed to the state Lego League meet in Augusta Saturday. Anyone else going? #edtech207
A2 Just one day after my first grader was introduced to ScratchJr I am hearing a lot more "I can try to figure it out" with tricky words in her reading homework #edtech207
A2- Great way to develop a growth mindset! Making reference to their persistence when coding to envy that same persistence when solving problems in math #EdTech207
It's #HourofCode Week Presenters @ChuckOYeah, @mboemmels and @jodi_teacher presented at #Levlearn sharing with Ts different ways to use Design Thinking, coding and computational thinking in the classroom! @ScratchJr is a great resource for kids to dip their toes into coding!
A4 for me I love the problem solving, but sometimes get overwhelmed and need to go slow to debug and find the errors - as a novice myself I worry about being a good helper! #Edtech207
#EdTech207 I have two in my classroom in our "Hackerspace" The kids love coding them. Sometimes the kids just play with them and other times I give them a challenge.
A4- as a math coach it is finding ways to get teachers excited about coding and seeing the value of it improving student learning- not just “something else to do” #EdTech207
#EdTech207 A4 Used think that not knowing anything about coding. Now I think that it's ok to say to students, "I know as much as you. Let's figure it out together." They gain so much confidence.
A4 It’s always good to go with the flow, but with coding it is more challenging in some ways to start.. but #havefaith and #takealeap Even the mistakes have value #edtech207
A4 intimidating to meet the needs of students who meet and then pass my top level of knowledge in the coding world- how do I meet their needs when they become the pros?
#EdTech207
A4- I also believe it can be hard for teachers to allow students to fail and reflect- it just seems to be in our nature to swoop in and rescue #EdTech207
A4: I think the thing I worry about is encouraging students to try something new, and making sure that they understand why its valuable. I want tp prevent all the "why do I need to know this?" stuff. #EdTech207
Putting the finishing touches on #hourofcode for 9th graders tomorrow. So many fun activities to choose from including soft circuits, Turing Tumble and a visit from @tylertech#edtech207
A5 I just used Paper CT showing loops as part of a math/art lesson with origami. #EdTech207 The primary focus was the STEAM activity but they also learned about loops.

We did a lot of #logic and #debugging in HS ELA to understand how to organize thoughts, writing, expression - readers/viewers/gamers/coders need to follow #logic and #process#edtech207
A5: Code stories in Scratch, Create games and scoring in Math, Demonstrate/animate a process in Science. Helped a teacher work on this example for social studies "Globalization" theme https://t.co/VVaoAFcM9e#edtech207
A5 treating @sphero & @Ozobot like characters & coding out storylines featuring their navigation; also creating one take, one shot short films featuring those robotic characters #EdTech207#robotics#elachat
A5: ALL THE WAYS! It is so easy to differentiate the product for any subject and give kids the option to build a PSA/tutorial via Scratch or code a website with their project. @vidcode is another awesome option, and @brainpop has subject spec. coding options. #edtech207

A5: One thing we I like to have students do is create blogs on Blogger, and we learn some really basic HTML so that they can customize their posts. #EdTech207
Yes I have my Ss learn about HTML code just to learn about embedding and the CONCEPT of scripting. They start to look for embed codes and this opens doors #edtech207
A5 working up code & computations for examining political maps, local demographics & how we might predict voting turnout & how we might make for more barrier free access to voting #edtech207#sschat
#EdTech207 I realized it was possible watching one of my littles create her own character, code it and make it talk to other characters...all by herself!
A6 Coding with students is rewarding because they get to make something and try out their own solutions to problems. Also, it's a clear model for how we learn from failures and try again. #edtech207
A6: Coding with children is critical because technology is everywhere, and we need the people who are going to change the world to know what they're doing! #EdTech207
#EdTech207 A6: Coding with children is fun for teachers too because it takes us outside the mundaneness of assessments and "have tos" everyday. #joyintheclassroom
A7 #familyengagement in school is powerful - needs planning, awesome teacher energy and collaboration with others (like @MeredithSwallow and all her pre-service teachers) snacks and LOTS of reminders for folks! Last night 1/2 our school came to our event #EdTech207
A7: My daughter and I did this last night, and she LOVED it! She did get a little frustrated when she got far ahead and had to stop to listen to instructions on sections she had passed. To make the event successful, maybe provide activities for multiple ability levels. #EdTech207
A8 I loved seeing a group of kids use coding to mod in Minecraft. Coding language skills was the primary goal but their creativity in world design was amazing. #EdTech207
A8: Ask them to use it to try to solve a problem, rather than making the coding itself the focus. Students are naturally creative, whether they believe it or not! I like the idea of making coding the vehicle for larger ideas. #EdTech207
#edtech207 A8 I love watching kids program @DashanddotNL to create artwork. They learn from coding and have a physical thing to bring home to show their families.
#NextSteps keep looking for integration ideas to bring it to a variety of grades and content areas #EdTech207 My Ts have gotten excited with Ss so hoping to build on that!
