Join us Thursdays 7pm ET / 11pm GMT / Friday 7am SGT/WA (Perth) / Friday 9am AEDT / Friday 11am NZT.
Hey y'all! I'm Kasey from Texas. I'm a digital learning consultant, blogger, author, and podcaster. Welcome to the #whatisschool chat! Please take a moment to introduce yourself!
#shakeuplearning
Hi everyone! Justine from a very soggy Auckland, New Zealand. Phd student researching gifted ed and former Primary (Elementary) teacher. Digital teacher and learner since 1999. #whatisschool
A1: Technology is NOT a solution, but it is an opportunity to do things different, to learn in new ways, and rethink old school assignments. #whatisschool#shakeuplearning
Traditional learning becomes dynamic when the teacher knows the content and is able to move beyond the textbook and textbook driven activities. #whatisschool
A1- Ray, 7th grade math teacher from Rhode Island. About 2 months ago, I began using @goformative, video, and self paced playlists to completely stop teaching in front of the room.
Check out how I did it. https://t.co/XshqOcviSX#whatisschool#shakeuplearning
A1. Technology expands the limits of what's possible and creates deeper communication and collaboration locally and globally. Opens up possibilities. #whatisschool
teachers need to have a grasp on what technology can do ... it is more than just accessing the internet ... what can the kids create with technology
#whatisschool
A1) Personally, Without technology, I could not imagine finishing my Masters. I have relocated & lived in 2 countries while studying, without compromising on the quality of academic learning & professional practice. Tech made it possible via LMS like Blackboard #whatisschool
Q2: How does the learning grow and evolve in your classroom, beyond one-and-done activities? How do you connect one activity to the next?
#whatisschool#ShakeUpLearning
Ask the students. I've often found that they're the ones who are able to ask the 'ungoogleable' questions - that's one of the things I love the most about them. #whatisschool
A2: True confession! I was TERRIBLE at this! I did a lot of one-and-done assignments. Now, I use digital tools like G Suite and PBL to help the learning live and grow throughout the year.
#whatisschool#ShakeUpLearning
Agree! They also need to be comfortable enough to let the students lead the way at times too and show them what's possible. Explore together. #whatisschool
A1b) Online learning has changed the ways we learn and has enriched lives of many people in rural areas, global travellers and more in tertiary education! Forever grateful for all the opportunities this has created! #whatisschool
A2. As everything is connected learning should overlap from one subject to another. There are no wrong questions. Questions are good. #whatisschool, #edtc300
A2. If the students and I couldn't see a connection and articulate it then we'd start to question why we were learning something. We'd change it pretty quickly. #whatisschool
A2 -In math, the progression of activities should make sense to scaffold towards a higher understanding. I like to use performance based tasks that incorporate more than just one and done tasks. Check out how I use them here: https://t.co/u8aUT96H95#whatisschool#ShakeUpLearning
A1: It has shown me how technology can supplement what students learn in the classroom as well as allow me to let the students take control of their own learning through technology. #WhatIsSchool#ShakeUpLearning#LUlearn
A1c) tech has helped to transform learning experiences by making information accessible easily, to create, connect, collaborate and learn from everyone #whatisschool
A1: Technology has helped motivate the students to do more. Through the use of technology we are able to provide different options since all students learn differently #whatisschool
A2: In 11/12 food tech, tasks feed off one another and grow in complexity until we reach the peak. Council Dinner. Degustation Menu. Technique. It’s the place they apply the skills they have learned through upper school. #whatisschool
A2: I try to make connections throughout the school year, going from one unit to the next so the Ss can remember it later on in life. #whatisschool#shakeuplearning#LUlearns
Q2: How does the learning grow and evolve in your classroom, beyond one-and-done activities? How do you connect one activity to the next?
#whatisschool#ShakeUpLearning
A2 if you look at content parts that you need to hit, they can be combined to create longer experiences. The bigger the experience, the more likely the students will remember the content #whatisschool
A2: This is something I’m working on and really struggling with. With annotation tools, it’s become easier for my students to identify writing styles or techniques in real world writing on various cites. I’ll admit- I need help here #whatisschool
Love this - all about balance. One supports and enhances the other. I don't think you could have one without the other now? Love my tech but I'll always be a fan of non-tech too. #whatisschool
In reply to
@nathan_stevens, @TuGa01468, @ShakeUpLearning
#whatisschool A2: to connect lesson to lesson I think it is important to add on as you go, taking learning step by step to get the fullest understanding of things
This is why tech should be used for the sharing of what is learned or created. Tech is still used as a small group or individual in nature. We need to get more students involved to get more ideas shared #WhatIsSchool
In reply to
@cossie29, @TuGa01468, @ShakeUpLearning
Yes, but just because students are familiar with tech does not mean they know how to use it in an academic sense ... making a funny YouTube video is different than making a documentary #whatisschool
A2: Just cause you've learnt something doesn't mean you can forget it! Reviewing and looking back to build knowledge is important rather than racing through and not retaining the informations! #whatisschool
Q3: Do you allow students to publish their work for the world? Why or why not? If you do, please share links and examples.
#whatisschool#ShakeUpLearning
So true! There are so many different options for technology but we must teach both for educational purposes as well as help our students understand technology outside of the school walls #whatisschool
We're not that far in. Remember, there's more than 80 years left. If we were to do the shift differently, we'd need to have started in the 90s .... #whatisschool
In reply to
@cossie29, @DennisDill, @ShakeUpLearning
Well, I like to have the students make the connections themselves by asking a guiding question on something like @padlet or @Flipgrid and having them answer in a communal space where everyone can learn from each other. #whatisschool#ShakeUpLearning
If students can't connect what they're learning to something concrete in their lives then I wonder why they're learning it. We talk about learning it for the future but will they remember it then or learn it when they need it? #devilsadvocate#whatisschool
A2) allocating time for design projects, which helps students to understand learning, thinking and applying ideas continues beyond one and done activity, connects to real life and takes their learning beyond classroom to the world.
#whatisschool
Kids will do it without asking ... i have kids helping each other ... figuring things out for themselves ... what they need are teachers who will create opportunities for them. #whatisschool
A3: I am a firm believer that every student at every level should have their learning shared online for a global audience. You don't have to share names or faces to give them an audience. Too import to ignore!
#whatisschool#ShakeUpLearning
Just had a teacher the other day tell me she couldn't find her subject in the real world or explain why students needed to learn it. Shocker! #whatisschool
A3: I have not yet because I would allow them to refine their work. If I sense they can do better, I would send them a comment on @googledocs and let them know. That way, the can work on it before they publish it. #whatisschool#shakeuplearning#LUlearns
Then there's this podcaster: @natepodcasts a 7 or 8 year old who has done pretty well for himself. Imagine if every school had a equipment for this. #whatisschool
In reply to
@DennisDill, @ShakeUpLearning, @natepodcasts
#whatisschool A3: I am not in a classroom yet but, I think it is important to get permission before posting students work online! If permission is granted I say go for it, it allows students to connect with others all around the world!
My students suddenly cared way more about the quality of their work when they new someone besides me was going to read it. GAME CHANGER! Let's let the learning light shine! #whatisschool
A3: I haven't had the opportunity to work with students in this way yet, but I think that it would be very beneficial to allow the students to share their work, provided you have parent permission and the student is comfortable with doing so. #whatisschool
The latter. Although time, pedagogy, curriculum, pacing, all play into the former. Along with giving up some control and letting things flow. #whatisschool
In reply to
@DennisDill, @ShakeUpLearning, @cossie29
maybe, but is the tech really new or is just an upgrade? Printing to a 3D Printer ... Laser Cutter ... CNC is fundamentally the same as printer to a paper printer... we just try to make it more complicated. We need to focus on fundamentals #whatisschool
That's why I tend to wait until they perfect it to release their work to the world. I don't want them to be rdiculed for not having their best work put forward. #whatisschool#LUlearns
every school has the ability to podcast ... takes almost no new equipment ... most just don't realize we have the power in our hands already. #whatisschool
In reply to
@mrterborg, @ShakeUpLearning, @natepodcasts
Right! They are already sharing selfies, snaps, and whatever else! Let's show them how to share their learning and create a positive digital footprint! #whatisschool
Ah! I think you are missing the point. Learning is a process and feedback from outsiders can help them, and if you share with an intentional audience you can find experts, authors, others who can be constructive without ridiculing. Perfect is the enemy of done #whatisschool
They find something they want to try to create and share how they built it. We used to have a wiki but we wanted a larger reach and went with something bigger #WhatIsSchool
All of our Ss had a note on their blogs that these were a record of their learning over time and would show progress therefore they wouldn't necessarily be perfect first up - that sorted that one out and made it a more powerful learning experience and more real. #whatisschool

A3-I teach MS, so I hesitate to share any of my Ss work to the outside world because of privacy concerns. I had some Ss create an awesome rap video about credit card responsibility, but I hesitated putting it on youtube because of their age. Wish I could share it! #whatisschool
We as educators need to have students create and share outside of closed environments. We have the have the mindset that these creation will be part of a job or college portfolio #WhatIsSchool
What we need is specific instruction with teachers on what they can do ... not a school wide PD, but individual ... i have had so many convos with Ts at the copier who left saying "I didn't know it was that simple." #whatisschool
A2: I link my post lab discussions into review activities. Then the quizzes and assessment can include high thinking and application of our topics. Letting the kids pick where the post lab topics takes them has been scary but immensely rewarding. #realworldties#whatisschool
Q4: How do you help build a continuous learning mindset in your students? Have you ever had students set their own learning goals?
#whatisschool#ShakeUpLearning
A3 ... Allowing kids to share to the world? ... heck I encourage that shiznit ... most kids have their YouTube channel ... i tell them about blogging ... we need to be about empowering kids. #whatisschool
#whatisschool A4: I think when it comes to keeping the ss interested in what they are learning we must first step back and learn how they respond to different activities. They will not stay involved if we do things they do not like! Learn before teaching
A2.1: I spent some time this summer playing with #googlegroups and can’t wait to do fewer standard post lab questions and more post lab forum discussions. #whatisschool
A1: It has allowed my students to connect with others in other countries. It has also allowed me to communicate with two selective mute students. #whatisschool
A4: I think that its important to keep students engaged and interested. This may be difficult at times but encourage them to ask questions and give feedback! Always support a child who is willing/wanting to learn more! #whatisschool
A2: With math, it's easy for them to see the connection, where one thing leads to the next. However, I would like to work on projects that follow them through the year. #whatisschool
Q2: How does the learning grow and evolve in your classroom, beyond one-and-done activities? How do you connect one activity to the next?
#whatisschool#ShakeUpLearning
... an old phone ... ipod ... a podcast is nothing more than a voice recording ... doesn't have to be fancy. it is the message that is important...not the tech. #whatisschool

This is a fantastic idea. This will be the exit project for our @BalloonEDU project for next year. Blogs are great, but @instructables increases the likelihood that it is useful. Wish that idea came across my news feed earlier. #WhatIsSchool

A4 - I help my students foster a growth mindset by celebrating mistakes in my class. I tell them mistakes make their brains grow! I also stay extremely positive and let them know that it is Ok to not get something the first time you see it. #whatisschool#ShakeUpLearning
Is it that you can't share their work, or you can't share names and faces. We can give them an audience without any risks to privacy or safety. #whatisschool
Tutorials make students think about how what they have learn is shared. How to take a quality image? What is important in a video? How do others learn? #WhatIsSchool

@EduQuinn, @ShakeUpLearning, @instructables, @BalloonEDU
A4: Intrigued by using Google Keep for goal setting. My 5th grade Ss set goals this year and identified areas of strength and weakness. Ss had ownership of their learning. #whatisschool
#whatisschool#ShakeUpLearning A2 We have connected lesson by bringing in guest speakers. In our #80s class talked about US-USSR relationship. Shared the story of the 1980 Olympic Hockey Team, showed the movie Miracle, then had Mike Eruzione share his story. Ss were engaged!
Might like this one - these Ss designed & built their own Makerspace using Design Thinking. I was the facilitator but it's their own work The blog is a copy of their own blog of their learning journey. The photos are awesome! #whatisschoolhttps://t.co/GciRZR7uzA

A3: I haven’t had (created) too many opportunities to do this yet. But I’m trying to come up with group projects where the kids could create or rewrite labs to share with other students/teachers. Maybe a good activity for my AP kids after their test. #whatisschool
The YouTube channels have been set up by the kids using their own gmails ... our school shuts of most of that ... kids use them to make videos ... publish music ... I also put stuff up on our school YouTube channel ... a sample https://t.co/xlaVyLiSMa#whatisschool
I control our school YouTube channel ... it is part of our school news. All of our news shows are there ... performances ... it is using our own JSANews gmail account #whatisschool we may be the only school in our district that runs our school news this way #whatisschool
A5: As a teacher, we can get in the way and stifle creativity. We have to build a culture of innovation, and give students room to be original and stop giving cookie cutter assignments.
#whatisschool#ShakeUpLearning
#whatisschool A5: To encourage creativity I think it is important to keep assignments and activities open to be modified by our students! Not just give them what you want and only what you want
I learned so much when I started using learning menus and giving students flexible learning paths. There is more than one way to the learning goal! #whatisschool
A5: Creativity and innovation already exists in our ss. It is up to us to provide an environment in which they feel comfortable expressing said creativity. Be welcoming and encouraging of students ideas and give them the chance to be creative in class! #whatisschool
A5 I think nature leads the way in creativity and inspiration. We need to encourage our students to be outside, watch, listen and learn. #whatisschool#edtc300
A5: I try to let my Ss go crazy on assignments. Let their imagination go wild. I do have some limits but I have try anything once. #LUlearns#whatisschool#ShakeUpLearning
A5 -I foster creativity and innovation by doing projects and assignments that provide a choice in the work product as well as allow them to explore their own real life applications to the math that we are studying #whatisschool#ShakeUpLearning
I like creating opportunities for the kids to push themselves and their talents ... here is another sample https://t.co/Kvl4SWLVcu#whatisschool as a result many kids come to me for assistance ...
A5. I encouraged my students to design and build their own Makerspace in an unused classroom at my last school. They had to design for all ages from 5-13. The blog tells their story in their own words. https://t.co/I0qryJYrH0#whatisschool
A4: I share all the work I am constantly doing to improve my teaching for them. I also keep a student shout-out board for improvement and when students show mastery of each unit. #inspiration#motivation#whatisschool
Although I haven't been in the classroom yet, i've seen the impact that @geniushour has on students! They love the ability to follow something they are passionate about and explore their creativity that way! #whatisschool
Innovation and creativity comes from using what actually interests students. Don’t be afraid to ask a student what they like to do and use that as part of a learning experience #whatisschool
A5: Creativity and innovation already exists in our ss. It is up to us to provide an environment in which they feel comfortable expressing said creativity. Be welcoming and encouraging of students ideas and give them the chance to be creative in class! #whatisschool
Here is an example of a math project where Ss are researching financial literacy through credit card responsibility with a choice of work product: https://t.co/yJpBqbLnPa#whatisschool
A5: For me, Innovation is the ‘output’ of creativity. At times the plan is to limit resources and make the students think about using common ingredients in ways that push our imagination #whatisschool
Frosting, shapes, even content. Not everything needs to be unique. Granted, if you can go free range, all fresh ingredients, with a personal chef .. do so :) #whatisschool
A5: I have a topic/idea I want the students to relay and how they go about creating or displaying their knowledge is completely up to them! If there needs to boundaries, I keep it to 3-5 items. I try not to say no! #WhatIsSchool#ShakeUpLearning
And ourselves. I don’t know everything and I have found the power of asking my students to help me correct something. The power then shifts from me to them in terms of where we go next. #whatisschool
I've often done that too but this was next level. They stripped and painted, added a kitchen and planned and purchased the equipment, furniture etc. Had a budget to stick to and had to do a lot of research. #whatisschool
A6: I teach teachers and I try to push them out of their comfort zones to make the magic happen. I do this by sharing my failures, and trying something new and crazy in front of them.
#whatisschool#ShakeUpLearning
Ah. really? Ours have access starting in 2nd grade. There's a wall so non district email addresses can't access Ss. (Incoming / outgoing) #whatisschool
#whatisschool A6: Risk taking is a great way to allow our students to learn, however, we need to ensure we make environments that allow for safe risk takings both physically, emotionally and mentally!
A6: students are allowed to take risks daily/weekly depending on their project or assignment. With video production, risk taking is a requirement! #WhatIsSchool
A6: I once had my students do a STEM project on creating their own colonial settlement. I told them to think about location and natural disasters. They enjoyed taking those risks. #shakeuplearning#whatisschool#LUlearns
A6: I think the first thing to do is to address the fact that risks can result in mistakes but thats part of life! Push ss to step outside of their comfort zones! Challenge them. Their learning will benefit so much from doing so. #whatisschool
A5: I LOVE getting off topic with them. I have the ability to tie just about anything happening around my Ss back to Chemistry. They build a love/hate relationship with it. I get to share the relevance of chemistry and they are challenged to think outside the box #whatisschool
And ourselves. I don’t know everything and I have found the power of asking my students to help me correct something. The power then shifts from me to them in terms of where we go next. #whatisschool
I just did a project where Ss were doing a Slope Intercept Form poster with a graph, equation, and explanation of a real life situation that they got to come up with on their own - as long as it made sense. Lots of crazy stuff like this #whatisschool
When I first started teaching, I thought I had to have all the answers, that students couldn't see me falter. Boy was I wrong! They NEED to see it! #whatisschool
A5: Our Ss come to us with imagination and creativity, but the game of school can wipe this out of them. A small step in my math class has been embracing and celebrating different problem solving methods and ways of thinking. Ss need to see their ideas as valid. #whatisschool
Thats so impressive that you have that talent of connecting to your subject so well! I hope to be able to do that when I enter the classroom! #whatisschool
#whatisschool#ShakeUpLearning A6 We did a cultural conversation this year with a class in Monterrey Mexico 🇲🇽. Focus was on current topics. Classes put together research questions then share answers to the other class. Ss learned not everyone agrees with your views.
#whatisschool#ShakeUpLearning A5 -- I used a learning menu board yesterday when presenting to a graduate counseling class. hey loved it. The board and Google Keep blew them away. Never too old to learn. Presenting again tomorrow. Excited #r12transformed
A6 We look at existing problems together and propose solutions. Then we look at possible technologies to solve them. The problems of today will be solved by our students, they are the future. #whatisschool
Also did a cultural exchange on the issue of gender inequality with a class in Argentina 🇦🇷. Opportunity for our students to express views and learn from others. #ShakeUpLearning#WhatIsSchool
Huge thanks goes out to @ShakeUpLearning for moderating tonights #whatisschool chat! It was another great twitter chat experience for me! Filled with great discussion, resources, and fellow educators!

A6: #weakness alert! This is a personal goal for me this year. I struggle to find the balance between too many opportunities and letting them grow. I’m thinking somewhere along the lines of designing lab procedure (safely?!?) #whatisschool
I do not publish their work due to confidentiality. However, if a student asked for help getting it published I would be more then happy to help them. With parent approval #whatisschool

What a great chat to partake in! Thank you for the conversation and see you again! Huge thank you to @ShakeUpLearning for moderating the conversation! #whatisschool
Here is the playlist I made to teach non-proportional relationships and slope intercept form. The last activity is the project where there is a link to the PDF. https://t.co/GVACgyuaAy#whatisschool#ShakeUpLearning

Not sure why ... their email address is only used as a login to all district software/computers/Google Classroom but it does not work as an email ... #whatisschool
We visited 10 countries this year in our classes at North White (Indiana). Every connection was made through @GooglePlus Connected Classroom Workshop. #ShakeUpLearning#WhatIsSchool

A6: I like to start math units with a problem or activity with little direction / instruction. Ss explore the topic but also realize that mistakes are part of the exploratory process. They work to construct meaning and understanding for themselves #whatisschool
#whatisschool Q5 I encourage students to be creative by extending their answers to more then one word, creative projects, and open conversations. The students have to create and sell a product each year in class and they always love that project!
#whatisschool
I've been reading a lot about STEAM teaching. Bringing art and/or creative mindsets back to education can really improve learning outcomes
