#PEChat Archive
Every other Monday, thousands of physical educators from around the world take part in an online Twitter chat on topics relating to #physed. The community votes for the topic and community members moderate the chat. The result is an amazing professional development opportunity called #PEChat.

I'm free for a bit. Phil from Saint Paul, MN. High school teacher.
Alright, welcome to tonight’s . Tonight’s topic is Positive Behaviour Management in . I’ll be moderating for the next 60!
Basically, I’ll ask questions (Qs) to help get things going that you can answer (As). Let’s keep it organized (e.g. Q1 -A1)
Ok, let’s get started: Q1. How would you define behaviour management (mgmt)?
A1. Behavior management is showing Ss how to respect themselves & others so learning can occur. Off the top of my head.
I’m in! First year teacher and new to . Josh Merritt. UP Academy Holland in Boston, MA.
I define behavior management as effective classroom engagement. The two go parallel for me.
That’s a good start! In what ways is that “managing” behaviours? https://t.co/2nWFQKlIqo
A1. Behavior management is showing Ss how to respect themselves & others so learning can occur. Off the top of my head.
Ok. How so? Are they parallel or is one the product of the other? If that’s the case, which leads which? https://t.co/ajajSbqwCg
I define behavior management as effective classroom engagement. The two go parallel for me.
Some Ss don't understand others learn different than them. Showing respect 4 other ways of learning is self-mgmt.
Q2. How is behaviour management a problem for teachers?
A1-I see it as Ss taking responsibility for their actions (learning and behaviour)
A1. Behavior mgmt is a uniform system that is both predictable and consistent, which helps to foster a safe learning environment.
Effective behavior management can be a result of higher classroom engagement.
So is behaviour management the teacher’s responsibility or the students? https://t.co/giUSqEtGpo
Some Ss don't understand others learn different than them. Showing respect 4 other ways of learning is self-mgmt.
a2-it's a problem for teachers when it takes away a lesson's objectives and disturbs learning for others.
Love that. “Predictable” and “Consistent”. Could you elaborate/give examples of the two? https://t.co/cKm4Fnifdm
A1. Behavior mgmt is a uniform system that is both predictable and consistent, which helps to foster a safe learning environment.
nice! Great to have you here!
The challenge for Ts is learning how each of their students responds to teaching style and other students reaction to them.
A2: From what I have seen, behavior management in is a problem because there is not enough positive behavior acknowledgement
A2-effective behaviour mgt is troublesome when it's not consistent and misunderstood by ss...should not change class to class.
Q3. How do mis-managed behaviours affect your teaching? Q4. How do mis-managed behaviours affect your students’ learning?
Consistent, because regardless of the student who exhibits the behavior the consequence remains the same.
as was mentioning earlier, it needs to be consistent (that’s where I have trouble!)
A-3/4 many teachers yell at the students and takes any kind of motivation from teaching/learning.
Playing roughly: First time, warning. Second time, sitting out for two minutes to reflect on behavior.
A1 - Ts ability 2 provide an environment where Ss R encouraged 2 take responsibility 4 learning & respect others opportunity 2 learn
clear expected behaviors make life easier. can't let 1% take away from the 99% on task, catch your Ss doing it right.
A3. Creates an unsafe environment and takes away the ability to educate others in order to address issues.
A2 - it's easier 4 Ss to misbehave with many moving parts - & constantly changing variables: equipment, organization, content, rules
Sounds like behaviour mgmt might be a set of teacher-taught tools for Ss to use to self-manage. Make sense? https://t.co/39Mq6yocDk
A1 - Ts ability 2 provide an environment where Ss R encouraged 2 take responsibility 4 learning & respect others opportunity 2 learn
A2 - also many Ts are trying to manage multiple classes at once - some even different age groups at the same time
Q5. Are there any leading researchers/authors on behaviour management in /general education?
A3 - Can cause a lesson to bomb pretty quick, reducing learning and the positive experience of all students in the class
A3. You spend more time redirecting behavior rather than teaching. A4. It creates confusion which can lead to defiance.
oh man… that sounds familiar!
Way to lead by example right? It's such an funny thing to thing yelling at kids to stop yelling is a good call
Q6. Do you have any favourite journal articles/books on positive behaviour management?
Q6. Do you have any favourite journal articles/books/links on positive behaviour management?
it's so much more pleasant and effective to model and praise positive behavior
co-construct with Ss, makes them part of the process.
Mis-managed behaviors can throw teachers off balance and spend time disciplining the one than teaching/facilitating the class
A4. Mis-mangaged behavior can distract those who are trying to learn & those misbehaving miss all of the content
A5. I would think that Hellison and his TPSR model would line up with that!
Maybe both? Ts teach the behavior that's expected Ss act as expected.
PS: I’m adding tweets, links & more to the workbook (although a little slowly so I can stay involved here): https://t.co/D4Q7nnsamM
Q7. What are some strategies you have used in your teaching to help manage behaviours in a positive way?
Both. If it's only the T's responsibility, T will burn out. If it's only the Ss' responsability, you'll wait a long time.
A7. I try to manage behavior by having a super positive attitude and keeping Ss busy as soon as they enter the gym.
A7. I also try to douse the fire individually not in front of the class.
A7 keeping the behaviors you challenged student close. Helping me setup breakdown demonstrate etc
A7. Everything is team based N points based so that Ss R encouraging one another, as a result there’s less interest in misbehaving.
a7 also equated time to cookies.
Wouldn't waste cookies why waste time? More important than cookies
I've found it gets easier as kids get older because they already know the expectations - K-2 is my main behavior struggle
A7 building relationships, always telling them the 'why' when talking about behaviors, and suggesting replacement behaviors.
know expectations. Code for beaten down!! 😜😜😜
ugh. I feel ya on this one.
https://t.co/U0nHPBSFy9
again… decision fatigue. You make so many more decisions w/ k-2 because they are less independent
https://t.co/zgKpGSwKYa
so you then have less willpower to stick to your guns w/ behaviour mgmt which makes class feel more wild
