👋🏼Serve as an Instructional Coach at Bartlett Middle School in Porterville, CA. Excited to kick of February having ❤️ to ❤️ conversations with other Educators who lead with their ❤️! #HackLearning
“People do not care how much you know until they know how much you care.” To lead with a heart it is important to let everyone you come in contact with know that they really matter. My #YouMatter page https://t.co/n12zMEMnOT#hacklearning
A1: Educational Leaders must lead with mind and HEART because we are dealing with human beings, not robots. If Ss don't feel that they are understood, respected, and loved, it doesn't matter how good your lesson is- it falls on deaf ears. #HackLearning
A1: We are in the people business - there is always emotional attachment to what we are doing. We need to be calm and compassionate but also fair. #Hacklearning
A1: Our business is children. Pure & simple. Sometimes policies and practices lose sight of that. We must begin and end each thought with, "What's good for children?" That's why we show up each day. #HackLearning
A1: Vital! Need to be a leader of education, policy, and learning, and this requires your mind. Most importantly need to be there as a leader of people, and that requires heart #HackLearning
A1: Leading with heart allows us to be vulnerable, honest & passionate about our work! Balancing that with leading with mind, which allows us to be logical, thoughtful & balanced! #hacklearning
A1: This article brings an interesting perspective. People don't resist change, they resist the pain of change. Leading with heart allows you to consider how to ease the pain. https://t.co/YpFdHtfkUQ… #HackLearning
Good morning, #HackLearning. Christian Ledesma, Assistant Principal in Minneapolis, MN. Feels like -25 below right and people are sportsing up the block at the stadium today.
A1: As an Educational and Learninf Leader it is so important to lead with your mind as well as your heart. "Vision is a function of the ❤️... the capacity to see things as they could be." 🌎🕊 #HackLearning
A1 it’s like tchg ... there is a science to teaching & there is an art ... leading with heart and mind means that you do what is right, but you have some heart for those that need more support #HackLearning
Helping others is perhaps the greatest joy! You cannot have a perfect day without helping others with no thought of getting something in return. - John Wooden #HackLearning
A1: Lead with heart because Ss, Ts, and parents are people. So care first. Lead with mind because you can't be swayed by every trend. Be thoughtful. #HackLearning
A1 When we lead with heart, we pay attention to our own values and show curiosity about the work of those we lead. We can be vulnerable in the service of our own learning. And we provide a safe and empathetic space where others can be vulnerable as they learn, too. #HackLearning
A1 The heart allows you to develop empathy and compassion to understand the ‘whole’ person. We all are people first with feelings/emotions and you can’t forget that. #HackLearning
A1 it’s like tchg ... there is a science to teaching & there is an art ... leading with heart and mind means that you do what is right, but you have some heart for those that need more support #HackLearning
A1: You have to lead with both to have a holistic picture.....you can't make decisions based on only data without seeing the child behind it, and you can't make decisions based only on empathy or feelings for that child, you need a balance of both to do what's best. #HackLearning
A1 The mind is essential as all decisions need to be for purpose and reason. Heart however enables you to understand that everyone is an individual and leadership is not a one size fits all. #hacklearning
Leading with heart first helps us connect with others. Without connections we can't build the trust and relationships that make us all better as educators and people. #HackLearning
I love being an educator & I pour my heart & soul into it because I understand the honor & privilege I have to work learners who are going to change the world! #hacklearning
A1: Leading with heart shows others we can try and also fail but that we care. Sometimes just knowing someone cares can be the difference-maker. #HackLearning
#HackLearning@TeachersJourney

A1. We are surrounded with children who have very deep emotions that they bring to school each day and educators who understand the importance of meeting those social/emotional needs. #HackLearning
A1 People are complex & learning involves rational as well as social-emotional pieces. Connect all those dots, inviting both head/heart, for stickiest learning. #hacklearning
A1 It’s all about being effective. If you lead with one and not the other, ultimately the kids will lose. School leaders need to lead with both, mind & heart #HackLearning
A1: The mind and heart are (supposed to be) open to everyone and everything. People grow when fully attended to - whether staff or student.
#hacklearning
A1: Instructional leaders must lead with heart and mind because without genuine love for your work, nothing will ever be truly successful. #HackLearning
A1 Leading with mind and heart helps us to relate to people, empathize with them and connect with them. We were with little people and big people...connections and relationships are necessary. #HackLearning
A1: We are all people. If the leader doesn’t lead from a place they believe no one gets to know them and begins to question why decisions are made. #hacklearning
A1 ~ We must lead with mind & heart because our “product” are children! Every decision must be based on S needs & what will support learning & growth. We must remember that all Ss are different and although we need to be consistent, circumstances matter also! #HackLearning
A1: 1.I think ❤️ should come first. 2.Just being book smart or teaching to the test does not help with common sense. 3. Caring for our Ss as a whole should be a priority. #hacklearning
A1 Leading with heart helps you see the human side of ‘school’ and helps guide decisions that takes that into consideration. Builds trust - the foundation of relationships. #hacklearning
leading has to have a purpose ... in education, that purpose comes from the heart ... if not, then you have policies based on test scores and data and not the individual id. #hacklearning
A!: Leadership without one of the two isn't strong leadership when people are involved. We aren't
"manufacturing widgets" - children come first, thus our heart must be involved in decision-making too! #HackLearning
A1: This work is all about building relationships with the people we work with. When people don't feel connected to their leader in some way, they don't feel inspired to do more, be more. #HackLearning
I read THE HUMAN SIDE OF SCHOOL CHANGE, and it really broadened my perspective of WHY teachers (PEOPLE) resist change: https://t.co/G4C4kd7aqV (part 2 here) #hacklearning
A1) I think our why comes from our heart and the how needs a bit more of our mind. It takes both heart and mind to support our teachers and students. #HackLearning
A1 We teach children. We have to connect to them, build relationshipsand be empathetic to understand what they really need and in order to be able do what is best for them. Works for adults too. #hackLearning
A1: More often than not we need to be a model to our Ss that helping other people is really important. Also, to lead with mind means to take time and plan things logically without being influenced. #HackLearning
A1: Educational leaders should lead with mind and heart becuase students, as all people do, will only thrive where they feel safe: physically and emotionally. #HackLearning
A1Learning should be something exciting you want to do outside of school throughout life. Planting the seeds for that requires passion that comes from the heart and mind. #HackLearning
A2: Leading and serving as a role model is about balance of thinking through all facets of a situation not only intellectually but also with your heart. This is with every decision we make (roughly 4 million a day!!) Kids need to feel safe and loved in order to learn #HackLearning
Haven't we all followed a leader who stays detached and is a bit like a "robot"? It's hard to connect, hard to be vulnerable yourself, hard to feel like we are in a HUMAN profession. #hacklearning
A1: Heart can be observed by teachers, students and parents and will dictate their buy-in to what you’re trying to accomplish for/with them. #HackLearning
We are working with humans, not numbers. Your heart helps you make the best decisions for the people around you. Tap into this understanding through active listening and reflecting. #HackLearning
A1: Leading with mind and heart is essential because overcoming challenges and obstacles is, for both Ts and Ss, more a matter of resolve and attitude more than logic #hacklearning
We are working with humans, not numbers. Your heart helps you make the best decisions for the people around you. Tap into this understanding through active listening and reflecting. #HackLearning
A1: Since education is a decidedly human endeavor, we have to then be human, and little is more human than the gifts we offer from the mix of head and heart. Leaders must continually blend the two. #HackLearning
A2: You have to have ♥️, courage, & be encouraging. This past year read Encouraging the ♥️ by @Jim_Kouzes & Barry Z. Posner. "At the ♥️ of leadership is caring. Without caring leadership has no purpose... leadership requires a 🔗...over matters...of the ♥️." #HackLearning
A1- Relationships and the culture of a school are so important. If there isn’t a strong foundation built on heart, it is hard to focus on the mind (or sometimes even want to). #HackLearning
#hacklearning A1 Leading with heart and mind is not always easy. Some will want you to just think through issue sequentially. If this, then that. But hearts don't always allow that. There's more to every issue. Won't always be popular.
#hacklearning A2: genuine, vulnerable, makes mistakes, learns from mistakes, knows people...more than just by name, doesn't know everything, shows passion, takes risks
A1) I think our why comes from our heart and the how needs a bit more of our mind. It takes both heart and mind to support our teachers and students. #HackLearning
At some point the leader needs to make a decision that is unpopular and very difficult. If the group knows what is in the leader’s heart even the toughest and most unpopular decision is palatable for the group. #hacklearning
A1(part 2): I was also thinking that it's usually my "heart" that knows when something is wrong or right, and it's my head that puts the plan together to follow my heart. #HackLearning
Barbara from North Eastern North Carolina #HackLearning (finally back to a #hacklearning chat!) A1--we must lead with the mind so that we are thinking critically and also lead with the heart so that we are thinking compassionately!
A2: The characteristics of someone who leads with ♥️ is to have courage as well as encourage which means to have a ♥️ as well as give others ♥️. Read Encouraging the ♥️ by @Jim_Kouzes & Barry Z. Posner. Packed with ♥️. #HackLearning
A2: Empathy, care, and passion. I love my job and I want everyone to know it! That enthusiasm can help someone facing a challenge or stuck in a rut. #HackLearning
At some point the leader needs to make a decision that is unpopular and very difficult. If the group knows what is in the leader’s heart even the toughest and most unpopular decision is palatable for the group. #hacklearning
A2: Someone who demonstrates their care for students, staff, community at all times. Someone who isn’t afraid to admit fault, and someone willing to do whatever it takes to help others be the best person they can be #HackLearning
What someone needs from me or from me as leader maybe somewhat different than their colleagues. Leading with heart means meeting people where they are #hacklearning as we would with children
A2: A leader with heart is vulnerable, kind, shows compassion, respects others (even when they disagree), and has integrity to make the tough decisions. #hacklearning
A1: People will listen to our minds and they will follow our hearts. If we can get to the sweet spot that is both, we can achieve great things. #HackLearning
I read THE HUMAN SIDE OF SCHOOL CHANGE, and it really broadened my perspective of WHY teachers (PEOPLE) resist change: https://t.co/G4C4kd7aqV (part 2 here) #hacklearning
A2: Leading with heart means someone is emotionally present for others. Caring, thoughtful and believing in them in when they don't themselves. #HackLearning
A2 Qualities of a leader with ❤️: Can accurately gauge the crowd, values relationships, polls stakeholders and acts, remembers names and responds to emails #HackLearning
Thinking about this a great deal lately - it seems to seep into day-to-day management as well as overall leadership. How often do we overlook the fact that teachers and parents are humans too? #HackLearning
I think leading with heart has this way of leveling the playing field on a personal level. We are all human, but have different roles. Leading with heart acknowledges that. #hacklearning
A2: They never forget WHY they took the job in the first place. Regardless of recognitions., awards, etc. They know where they came from. What is important. #hacklearning
A2: Someone who leads with Heart also has the self-confidence to, like an Etch-a-Sketch, shake off the past and not hold grudges while looking to the future. #HackLearning
A2: Someone who leads with heart seeks to understand and knows that no matter what everyone (including themselves) deserve to be treated with respect and understanding. It’s ok to not be perfect but it’s no ok to stop growing. #HackLearning
And this goes for our teachers, too. As professionals, we try to set aside our personal issues and do the job for our students, but sometimes those issues are too big. That's when we need our work family. #HackLearning
A2: Decision making always takes into consideration the well-being of everyone involved. Empathy is one of the key driving force of all decisions.
#HackLearning
A2: Someone who leads with heart knows how to LISTEN- not just hear, and EMPATHIZE with people. A leader with heart checks their ego at the door, and is brave enough to follow their heart, to do what is right especially when it is unpopular. #HackLearning
A2: Empathy, trust, humbleness, and perhaps even a sense of humor. Overall, a person who is approachable and makes others feel like they are being heard. #HackLearning
A1. We are surrounded with children who have very deep emotions that they bring to school each day and educators who understand the importance of meeting those social/emotional needs. #HackLearning
Carter Page Said What? The Subject of the FISA Warrant Dust Up Once Called Himself "Adviser to the Kremlin" https://t.co/r4IgFAAyGY Well Get Over It Cupcakes With This Background He Needed To be Watched!
A2: Someone leading with heart is sympathetic, empathetic, a good speaker but an even better listener, and runs after relationships with people. Always looking for positive interactions and making each individual S feel like they belong and they are loved. #hacklearning
Great point in the importance of acknowledging mistakes. We can't expect people to take chances and risk mistakes if leaders don't do the same. Be real, acknowledge faults, and stress the desire to do better with the next challenge. #HackLearning
Even without #FISAMemo Warrant Carter Page Would Have still been under Surveillance Because of Meeting with Russian Oil Giant Rosneft Page was a Russian asset maybe a Spy
A2: It's important to remember that those who lead with the heart can also get "heart broken". It's great when others check in on those leaders. #HackLearning
A2: Someone who leads with heart is like the rabbit at the dog race track - who is setting the pace for all around that the human element is real and what matters most both instructionally and interpersonally #HackLearning
A1- Genuine, authentic, care, empathy, a quick smile, self-deprecating. You gotta show it. They (parents, staff, & students) need to see it and feel it in order to believe it. #HackLearning
A2: Curiosity and an open mind to accompany. If we don't look at the "why" and "how" of choices, behaviors, and actions, we can't really make that connection to lead our next steps. #HackLearning
A2) There is a selflessness about people who lead with heart. They make it about others. They want the people they lead to have success and to shine. They really listen. #HackLearning
At some point the leader needs to make a decision that is unpopular and very difficult. If the group knows what is in the leader’s heart even the toughest and most unpopular decision is palatable for the group. #hacklearning
Leading with heart is about humanity & understanding; it is about being responsive not reactive; it is about teaching kids, not just covering curriculum! #HackLearning
Admin is usually put in that heartless position when they have to blend mandated policy that teachers and Admin now id not necessarily the best for kids or teachers. #hacklearning
A leader with heart is someone who understands that relationships come first; they understand that students & staff are shaped by their experiences outside of school; they know people's names & stories; they share their own story! #HackLearning
Have a great chat #HackLearning Don’t forget this Wednesday, Feb 7 is Global School Play Day! Learn more or register your school or district to join the over 315,000 students from 55 nations at https://t.co/mTR9jp5vbQ#GSPD2018
A2: Great listener first. Knows and is comfortable with who they are to the core of their being, wants to learn about the core of others. #HackLearning
A1:We must never forget who we are servicing...children & families.Children need our help to navigate through school, trauma, mental health issues, and many other things that are impacting their lives. This can not be done if you are not leading w/your mind & heart. #HackLearning
A2 someone that leads with heart takes the time to get to know their students and shows their them they care about what's important in their lives. That connection is powerful. #HackLearning
A2: It depends on their heart! LOL - But really, it does. - I want to say compassion, empathy, failing forward, etc - However, I've worked with some ppl who clearly led with their heart but their love led to pity/low-expectations. #HackLearning
A2 Someone who leads with heart helps students and teachers explore what matters to them, find motivation to do their work, participate in crafting their school experiences, open up to each other, willingly struggle, empathize with each other, and show resilience.
#HackLearning
A leader with heart is someone who understands that relationships come first; they understand that students & staff are shaped by their experiences outside of school; they know people's names & stories; they share their own story! #HackLearning
A1: if you aren’t in tune with a child’s emotions it will be difficult to get them to learn. You can have all the data points in the world but that doesn’t give us the full picture. Kids don’t learn from adults they don’t like! #HackLearning
A1: This article brings an interesting perspective. People don't resist change, they resist the pain of change. Leading with heart allows you to consider how to ease the pain. https://t.co/6qHVqVYyb3#HackLearning
A2: As an Tt you need to connect with and capture the ❤️s of the Ss & Fs we serve. One of my favorite #Sketchnotes by @sylviaduckworth is a quote by @gcouros
"To inspire meaningful change, you must make a 🔗to the ❤️ before you can make one to the mind." #HackLearning
A2: Think that could be a long list of positive traits. You mention respect, humbleness,...
These are all together traits everybody should have. As a leader you have to demonstrate and live these traits. To be an example and a motivation for others. #HackLearning
So true! @TheLopezEffect talks about her consistent honesty with her staff & students. It’s all in her book The Bridge To Brilliance! It’s a game-changer in the classroom. #hacklearning
A2 People can see a leader who leads with heart. Although decisions may be difficult to make they are made because it is for the better of the whole. #hacklearning
A2: When I think of heart, I think of vulnerability. In vulnerability lies a great capacity, a great potential for empathy. If we are to lead with empathy, then we have to lay bare ourselves through our vulnerability #HackLearning
A2. One day on Twitter this person said, "I chase around amazing ..." - it stuck with me and I created this graphic. She has the characteristics to see the positives in every situation. #HackLearning
This reminds me on Simon Sinek's work on leadership & an article recently shared on Success magazine on why the empathetic leader is the best leader. https://t.co/JCtrFTJ2FO#HackLearning
A2.2 Leaders w/heart notice both others' & their own emotional cues -- posture, tone of voice, facial expressions, gestures -- and start conversations that dig deeper. #hacklearning
A3: Leading with Heart and being an instructional leader go hand-in-hand. Isn't the outcome of instruction student learning? Shouldn't our hearts want all students to have life opportunities to succeed? #HackLearning
#hacklearning A3: Instructional leadership and leadership should be one in the same, even when poopy stuff gets in the way. Looking at student learning and honing in on that level is all heart! @TonySinanis
A1: “We must remember that intelligence is not enough. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education. The complete education gives one not only power of concentration, but worthy objectives upon which to concentrate” – MLK #HackLearning
A3: I think IL is someone whose goal is to help Ts grow which benefits kids. If they lead with the heart, they come from a helping place not a compliance place. #HackLearning
If we lead with heart, don't we include student learning? I'd think doing what's best for children means we're leading with heart.
I want my students to be life-long leaners. I can do that by leading with heart.
#hacklearning
A3 Heart creates the urgency to make sure decisions around instruction are on track and purposeful. Are we offering the best to our students? #hacklearning
a2| Great instruction, to me from a P perspective is an art, not everyone can be. I think it's pertinent to realize that not all learners are the same, neither are all leadership styles. #HackLearning
A3: Heart-led instructors teach students, not content. They listen, observe and invite others into the planning, teaching, assessing and celebrating phases of instruction.
#hacklearning
A3: Through the ways in which you have those "coaching" conversations. Your tone of voice, body language, intention, not a "fix-it" mindset but rather "Let's partner together." #hacklearning
A3: The intersection point is that by leading with heart, the child is always first. What would be best for them is generally speaking the most instructionally sound practice. #HackLearning
A1: you could get results by demanding but you won't build the capacity of your school to thrive and develop a love of learning and joy of collaboration. Culture eats strategy for lunch! #HackLearning
A3: When we serve as an instructional leader to focus on student academic needs, yet consider the social/emotional needs of the entire school community - we have balance. #HackLearning
A3) Students want to engage with interesting, fun, and meaningful activities and they want to be their best for adults who show respect, care, and interest. #HackLearning
A3) When you lead with heart people see your passion for learning and sharing new things. You lead by example. You demonstrate a growth-mindset #HackLearning
A3 Leading with the heart does not mean that you are blind to change and decision making. A instruction leader is well read and also has empathy and good communication skills #hacklearning
A3: Leading with heart would lead to better instruction b/c those are the Ts & Admin who are constantly trying to make school better for their Ss. New lessons, strategies, etc.. #HackLearning
A3: students will listen, follow and give their best to any teacher they believe has heart towards them! Creating a strong bond where everyone wins! #HackLearning
A3: I think they have to be. They don’t have to know all the answers but they do have to help people question and grow. When they go on that journey with the staff everyone gets better. #HackLearning
A3:When a T leads w heart, they lead w heart in all areas. Not only building meaningful positive relationships with Ss, but they also teach how to lead w their hearts.Reading & responding w empathy 4 others around the world-helping Ss build relationships w each other #hacklearning
An instructional leader needs to lead with heart. When a T takes risks in the classroom and they don't work the first time...how does the leader respond? #HackLearning
A3: When you lead w/your ❤️, others see your passion & pick up on it and want to learn. If your ❤️ isn’t in it, they will know and will not learn. Make it your passion! #hacklearning
When you care about teachers and kids, you want teaching and learning to be at its best. The relationships drive you to improve instruction at all costs! #hacklearning
A2 We focus on modeling empathy, active listening, removing obstacles, and tirelessly working side-by-side. It's "us" against the challenge "we" will overcome, together. #hacklearning
A3: Someone that leads with heart is very intentional. What they do is based on strong beliefs and values. Being a strong instructional leader benefits teachers and students, therefore that is leading with heart.
#HackLearning
Leading with heart & mind are not mutually exclusive! In fact, a leader with heart understands the importance of making informed and thoughtful decisions that are in the best interest of kids! #hacklearning
A3: A leader who leads with heart is one who supports others in decisions that are difficult - but necessary in the interest of student learning. #HackLearning
I'm a little late to the chat, but LOVE this topic. A2: A #leader who leads with their heart is genuine in their motives and puts students and teachers above politics & personal ambitions. #HackLearning
A3: Leading with heart and being an instructional leader are one in the same. Winning over "HEARTS and MINDS" is an age old expression for a reason. If people can't "feel you", they are less likely to buy into your message. #hacklearning
A3: Leading with ❤️helps foster innovation. You let teachers and students run with their passions. You support them. You encourage them. You let them grow. You share ideas. #HackLearning
A3 IMO instructional coaching helps lead with both - providing support or effective pedagogy with the heart for students - hard to go wrong when you focus on students #HackLearning
A3 They can be and often are instructional leaders bc they care about kids, colleagues and the learning environment. They lead by example. #hacklearning
A3 an instructional leader who leads with their heart combines best practice with where their teachers are at, and focuses on forward movement #HackLearning
A3: Heart is shown through caring. Instructional leadership is where you show you care about teachers as professionals and want to help them grow. One of the best way for a building leader to help kids is by helping teachers! #HackLearning
A3: The area I see the most needed focus where leading with heart and instructional leadership is concerned these days - the concept of civility. We are all in the business of growing kind citizens. It takes strength sometimes to tailor words & lessons that way #HackLearning
A3. Ah ... such an excellent question! I sure have watched many instructional leaders try to get this right and fall short. It is an amazing dance that isn't easy to master. I surely didn't understand at first. #HackLearning
A3 can't be a great instructional leader without leading with the heart. Learning is more powerful for students that know their instructor understands them and cares for them outside their daily lesson. #HackLearning
A3 I'm w/all those pointing out that leadership vs. instructional leadership is a false dichotomy. Those leading w/heart in schools ensure their efforts influence learning in all dimensions, including instructionally. #hacklearning
A3 ~ Leaders focus on how methods, strategies, technology will improve student learning, skills, understanding & application on the content material! Ss are at the heart of all decisions, including instruction ones! #HackLearning
A3 Leading the classroom with ❤️ is crucial! My Ss know I ❤️ what I do. They can feel my enthusiasm. I am truly happy to see them when they walk in & I tell them that. When they’re absent, I make it clear that I noticed & they were missed #HackLearning
A3 Leading with heart allows Edus to put Ss first. Where are their voices? What are their outcomes? What are their needs? This will drive quality instruction. #HackLearning
A3: A passion for learning is infectious. And it is important for school leaders to be strong instructors as well. Better yet...can they ask the right questions to see others improve their instruction? #HackLearning
It is so easy to get swept up by the forces pulling on our attention. I find I need to be deliberate about pausing, listening, empathizing, and then reacting. It takes more time, for sure, but I feel more confident in my work. #HackLearning
A3: The best leaders are those who care. I will give 110% to someone who leads me with kindness and invested interest over someone who only seems out for their own good/advancement. Same with students looking at teachers. #HackLearning
A3: leading with heart is keeping the core of decisionswith students best interest at heat then you instructional leadership interests with having training and skill to carry out the decisions or initiatives #hacklearning
A3: Interesting to thing of leading with heart and being an instructional leader as "intersecting." Perhaps they're parallel? Data and scores can prompt us to ask questions that reveal what engages and drives Ts and Ss on an emotional level #hacklearning
A2 Easy to see these characteristics when things are going smoothly, but can a P still be perceived as leading fr t/ heart when an incompetent T is being documented out of the profession? Ss & parents see it, but that T & union probably don't. #HackLearning#dilemma
A3: The intersection point is that by leading with heart, the child is always first. What would be best for them is generally speaking the most instructionally sound practice. #HackLearning
A3- You have to be able to engage the hearts and minds of your community in order to make instructional steps. Explaining the “why” will get you much farther than giving directives. #HackLearning
A3: Also, when giving feedback, it's important to find the intersection of what the teacher needs to hear (instructional leadership) and how to best deliver the message (heart). #HackLearning
A3: Leading with ❤️helps foster innovation. You let teachers and students run with their passions. You support them. You encourage them. You let them grow. You share ideas. #HackLearning
Q3: in ed leadership, I think the intersection of leading with both head and heart comes by surrounding ourself with people that have skills and styles different from yours and empowering them #HackLearning
A3: Sharing your passions with others can ignite a pathway for them. Seeing you, flawed and all, having courage to keep on trying and growing makes the challenge less scary. I personally rather follow a leader with heart than one with all the answers. #HackLearning
A2: You just know when you walk through the front doors of the school and the interactions w/teachers & students. Those characteristics will always shine through the culture. The culture is such a determining factor when leading w/ the heart and mind. #Hacklearning
A3: if you are leading from the heart and an instructional leader you will almost always do a better job leading teachers to greater development rather than them being fully dependent on you for direction #hacklearning
A3 when a community of caring is the foundation, instruction can be more authentic and actually connect with students at an individual level #HackLearning
A3: Not only do they intersect but is at the ♥️of all we do, are, & pass on to all we have the honor of impacting as well as being impacted by. #WhenKidsTeach Being in this noble profession of Education and Teaching is a work of ♥️. #HackLearning
A3b: Leading with heart instructionally means building on student passions and meeting Ss where they are, not where they're supposed to be. Loving Ss unconditionally and teaching them how to love others in the world. #HackLearning
My daughter’s b-ball game today (she's 9): Opposing coach calls time out. His girls are confused. They jog over. He looks up w a warm smile. Message: Not 'i'm frustrated w you' but 'i'm gonna teach you something. It’s gonna be good.' For little ones that was really nice.
A3: Often times being an instructional leader and leading with heart go hand in hand. Ss don’t want “sage on the stage” instruction, they want someone there with them who is willing to make the same mistakes with them, and someone to be their friend as well. #HackLearning
A3: Through heart we offer inspiration, we exude passion. We do not need instructional leaders to be the mouthpieces of initiatives and mandates. We need IL’s to get us to a place where we see and feel the impact of our work together. We share the work. #HackLearning
A4: an instructional leader with heart makes sure learning is relevant and meaningful to the individuals. That process takes thought and intention #HackLearning
A3 leaders with heart, lead by example and realize that it's not the content we teach but the students we teach that should be the focus first. #hacklearning
Which adds courage to the conversation! You must have courage to do the right thing for kids, especially when that means going against the grain and/or not giving in to political pressures. #HackLearning
We can lead & be instructional leaders w/out heart. However, when leading w/ ♥️ WE can do so much more. Our Collective Efficacy grows leaps & bounds.
WE > me
#HackLearning
I think it depends on how much support was given and rejected/refused before the documentation started ... many times Ts won’t accept or ask for help the wonder why they are dismissed #HackLearning
true, but great leaders don't always have to explain the "why" ... people just believe in them. When my principal asks me to do something I don't ask him "Why?" #hacklearning
That student response is why it's clear who these people are in your buildings. Those are the rooms in a HS where you'll find the Ss 30 minutes before school & an hour after school. #hacklearning
A3 In fact, I’ll say that heart is needed first in order to be effective with instruction. Making it clear to the Ss that you care first, will open their minds to learning. Without showing the love, the minds will be closed #HackLearning
A3: Leading with heart and being an instructional leader often have to intersect because you will need that relationship piece to engage students or staff, there must be a personal connection to influence change #HackLearning

A3: #hacklearning Educational leaders started as teachers (mostly). Always remember why you got into this profession. Take time to reflect on your practice and share strategies for connecting with others. The heart leads us take care of our people (Ts and Ss).
Japan's train system puts America to shame. We are 50 years behind. We also need to ask the Europeans, just how is it possible hundreds of trains for years, & no incident. Meanwhile, we have two crashes in a week!!!? #AmtrakCrash
Yes, demonstrating best practice is essential. We need them to know we are not perfect either but we try again if it is not right the first time. #hacklearning
A3: Reminds me of the quote “people don’t care about you much you know until they know how much you care” T. Roosevelt. In order to lead effectively, you have to demonstrate that you lead with compassion and heart and still have high expectations. #HackLearning
A2 Someone who leads with heart helps students and teachers explore what matters to them, find motivation to do their work, participate in crafting their school experiences, open up to each other, willingly struggle, empathize with each other, and show resilience.

We all have hopes, dreams, and good intentions to do what's best for our students. The point of intersection is where our goals meet up. Instructional leadership is seizing opportunities to co-construct and implement goals, #HackLearning
