A2: Loss of language skills due to losing access to fluent English modeling and speaking opportunities 😔 #ELLCHAT
  • KanakoSuwa Jun 11 @ 9:11 PM EDT
A2: Definitely English. 90% of my Ss speak Vietnamese at home so they probably won't be getting any English input/output opportunities over the summer unless parents and Ss make a conscious effort to incorporate English into their summer lives but it'll be difficult. #ELLchat

A2. I usually see a dip in reading skills across the board, and for the first week or two my students are adjusting to listening to English all day. #ELLchat
  • RLellaEdD Jun 11 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A2) Regression in ELD is common, particularly for students traveling to visit family in the summer, or those who get little exposure to English, as well as regression in reading fluency and comprehension. #ellchat

A2: I worry about us focusing on negatives of visits to home country or only speaking L1. Yes, it may affect English skills but family connections & L1 skills benefit our students, too! #ELLChat
  • PalomoLuisa Jun 11 @ 9:19 PM EDT
We also know the research behind being strong in your L1 before gaining proficiency in L2. #ELLChat

  • KanakoSuwa Jun 11 @ 9:22 PM EDT
A2b) Yes, but if it gives them the opportunity to develop their L1, that might benefit their English growth in the long run. A strong foundation in L1 can be an asset to acquiring an L2! #ELLchat

  • PalomoLuisa Jun 11 @ 9:25 PM EDT
A3b) our @OmahaPubSchools students also have access to digital resources through their schools that can be accessed from anywhere. Access doesn’t always mean immediate use, so we use our time to show students how to use these tools. #ELLChat

    • RLellaEdD Jun 11 @ 9:21 PM EDT
I agree. There are tremendous benefits to those visits, but perhaps we can find ways to counter the academic losses.

A3. Summer reading programs, girl/boy scout, rec center programs, YMCA... it’s a really small town, but there are some options. #ELLchat
  • judiehaynes - Moderator Jun 11 @ 9:29 PM EDT
    Q4) Documentation of summer slide: https://t.co/NdZGYXZ1wD #ELLchat
  • RLellaEdD Jun 11 @ 9:29 PM EDT
A3) I would really like to work on opening our school library for a day or two in July and August to promote reading, but couldn’t get it together quick enough for this year. It’s a must-do for next summer! #ellchat
  • judiehaynes - Moderator Jun 11 @ 9:29 PM EDT
Q4) What can teachers do help ELLs from losing what they have learned during the school year? #ELLCHAT
  • PalomoLuisa Jun 11 @ 9:30 PM EDT
I know there are grants available. We’re wanting to keep our library open for families next summer, too. Once families feel safe with us, it makes sense to make the most of our shared spaces. #ELLChat

A4) Have ELLs go on a virtual tours of famous places in the U.S. such as Colonial Williamsburg. https://t.co/Gr7XWTEvvG #ELLchat
  • emilyfranESL Jun 11 @ 9:31 PM EDT
I’m bringing my classroom library to the park this summer...we’ll see how that goes! 🤷🏽‍♀️☀️📚📖🌳 #ellchat

A4) Go to Pinterest and pick a few summer activities for your students. https://t.co/78uo1Y9btC #ELLchat
  • KanakoSuwa Jun 11 @ 9:32 PM EDT
A4) Send home resources such as online English games and series of videos they can watch so they are exposed to English over the summer. Give a notebook so students can keep a journal, even if it is a sentence per day, so they are writing in English. #ELLchat
  • judiehaynes - Moderator Jun 11 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A4) Have ELLs collect something during the summer. Provide a place on a class blog for students to upload pictures and write a few sentences about their collections. This would work well for ELLs who are traveling. #ELLchat
  • linvillebs Jun 11 @ 9:33 PM EDT
We offer summer school 4 days a week, host a summer literacy camp once a week, and send home lots of books for our students to read over the summer. I have a wonderful reading program during the school year. My students and parents are in the routine of reading at home. #ELLCHAT
  • PalomoLuisa Jun 11 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A4)1st learning needs to be solid, rather than a ‘race to the top’ I’ve always believed the faster the progression, the easier it will be to lose it.2nd-make learning integrated across content areas for deeper learning.3rd, involve families as early and often as possible.#ELLChat

  • diazstacey5 Jun 11 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A5: I know some teachers send home a list of resources...includes community program info, library info, apps that students can download on their phone...#ELLchat
  • KanakoSuwa Jun 11 @ 9:34 PM EDT
A4b) Reach out to the parents to stress the importance of continued engagement and exposure to English over the summer. Usually parents are responsive and will find one way or another to make sure their child has access to English. It's a joint effort. #ELLchat
  • ElizabethEmmons Jun 11 @ 9:34 PM EDT
A4. Last summer I kept in touch with my students’ parents. We shared pictures of our travels with each other and sent “voice texts” for the pre-readers. I plan to do something more organized this year to keep my students reading and engaged. #ELLCHAT
  • emilyfranESL Jun 11 @ 9:35 PM EDT
A4: Home visits can help keep students accountable for daily reading over the summer. A parent told me last week that as soon as she mentioned that I was checking on him, he grabbed the book and started reading 🤣☀️📖📚 #ellchat
  • ElizabethEmmons Jun 11 @ 9:36 PM EDT
Yes to all of this especially the cross-content integration. It’s hard to forget something you’ve seen EVERYWHERE! #ELLCHAT

A3: #ellchat if the student is a newcomer, we offer them summer school. I feel that with the internet being so powerful, a lot of resources can be found online so that they don't have to travel. The only problem is that lack of internet at home.
    • judiehaynes - Moderator Jun 11 @ 9:20 PM EDT
Q3) What kinds of activities are available to ELLs in your school & community that may help them avoid learning loss during the summer? #ELLchat
  • ElizabethEmmons Jun 11 @ 9:40 PM EDT
Oh good one, @HSeslteacher ! Our library has free audiobook access online! #ELLCHAT
  • GEagen1 Jun 11 @ 9:41 PM EDT
A4: #ellchat I feel that if we provide some helpful resources such as webpages, local library, parent center, it would allow them to keep the what they have learned during their academic school year and minimize regression. I think the hardest part is them actually using it.
  • PalomoLuisa Jun 11 @ 9:42 PM EDT
We take weekly trips to our neighborhood library so that our kids feel welcome there and can use the technology there. Not a guarantee, but another opportunity for them to have access. #ELLChat
    In reply to @ElizabethEmmons
  • judiehaynes - Moderator Jun 11 @ 9:42 PM EDT

Q5) How can do you engage parents in helping their children avoid the summer slide? #ELLCHAT
  • RLellaEdD Jun 11 @ 9:45 PM EDT
A5) It’s a great topic for an end of year parent advisory committee event. We ended the year with a Community Fair attended by local organizations who shared information about resources and programs they provide. Next year I’m definitely incorporating summer slide info! #ellchat
  • judiehaynes - Moderator Jun 11 @ 9:46 PM EDT
A5) Make sure to keep parents informed about the activities that you recommend for their children so that there is some follow-through. #ELLchat
  • emilyfranESL Jun 11 @ 9:47 PM EDT
A5: The best thing we can do is create strong relationships with our students’ parents — THIS will give opportunities to encourage our families to maintaining the academic engagement during the summer #ellchat
  • KarenNemethEdM - Moderator Jun 11 @ 9:47 PM EDT
A5 a recent article explains summer learning loss. #ELLChat. https://t.co/A3DoZI8S7E
  • PalomoLuisa Jun 11 @ 9:47 PM EDT
A5) relationships w/ families need to begin long before summer so that trust is present. We also need to consider what families are balancing and make requests that are reasonable & attainable. Ideally we can give families supplies & resources. #ellchat
  • PalomoLuisa Jun 11 @ 9:48 PM EDT
We also have the librarian come to our school a couple of times during the year to build relationships with or kids so that they feel more welcomed. #ELLChat

  • judiehaynes - Moderator Jun 11 @ 9:52 PM EDT
Q6) What more do you think your school could do to help ELLs avoid the “summer slide.” #ELLCHAT
  • KarenNemethEdM - Moderator Jun 11 @ 9:53 PM EDT
A5 Look for a community organization that might help you compile a list of enrichment activities for families with discounts- a great volunteer job for college student #ELLChat
  • HSeslteacher Jun 11 @ 9:54 PM EDT
A6: I appreciated ideas shared by others on #ELLChat for informing parents about how to combat summer learning loss. Also hoping for more summer school spots for ELLs.

A5) Many parents who don’t speak English themselves don’t know that the summer slide is even a thing! So tell them summer slide is REAL, then give suggestions of what Ss can do over the summer. #ELLchat

  • judiehaynes - Moderator Jun 11 @ 9:55 PM EDT
A6) I think schools should centralize the information about summer activities so it's not hit or miss with individual teachers. These ideas would be a good start to a list. #ELLCHAT
  • PalomoLuisa Jun 11 @ 9:55 PM EDT
A6) i wish we had more time. Our summer program is only through June; there are options for July, but not at many locations. I also wish we could get WiFi in our neighborhoods for families. I think @CoxComm might be doing something like this. #ellchat

  • KarenNemethEdM - Moderator Jun 11 @ 9:57 PM EDT
