A2) According to research low-income students lose more than two months in reading achievement during the summer, while high-income students see reading gains. #ELLCHAT
A2: Definitely English. 90% of my Ss speak Vietnamese at home so they probably won't be getting any English input/output opportunities over the summer unless parents and Ss make a conscious effort to incorporate English into their summer lives but it'll be difficult. #ELLchat
A2. I usually see a dip in reading skills across the board, and for the first week or two my students are adjusting to listening to English all day. #ELLchat
A2) Regression in ELD is common, particularly for students traveling to visit family in the summer, or those who get little exposure to English, as well as regression in reading fluency and comprehension. #ellchat

A2) we make every effort to enroll all of our ELLs in our summer program to avoid as much of the summer slide as possible. We have almost 300 students who voluntarily attend. Otherwise we know their literacy & math skills regress. #ELLChat
Interesting story- one of my students went to her home country w/ mom and siblings, and came back with tremendous GAINS! We decided it was a healing trip for her whole family that also affected her academic performance and motivation #ELLCHAT

A2: I worry about us focusing on negatives of visits to home country or only speaking L1. Yes, it may affect English skills but family connections & L1 skills benefit our students, too! #ELLChat
A3) @OmahaLibrary offers SO many clubs & activities for children in our city to continue their reading development. @OmahaPubSchool offers Summer school. #ELLChat
A2b) Yes, but if it gives them the opportunity to develop their L1, that might benefit their English growth in the long run. A strong foundation in L1 can be an asset to acquiring an L2! #ELLchat
A3: Allyson from Team Ready, Set, Coteach here chiming in late! To prevent major losses such as the ones in tonight's #ellchat, we teach year-round! Only 3 week breaks, 4x a year. An interesting shift.
A3: our county offers summer camp for HS newcomers (thanks @diazstacey5 for settingit up); we also have summer reading camps for 1-3rd graders

A3b) our @OmahaPubSchools students also have access to digital resources through their schools that can be accessed from anywhere. Access doesn’t always mean immediate use, so we use our time to show students how to use these tools. #ELLChat
A3) I would really like to work on opening our school library for a day or two in July and August to promote reading, but couldn’t get it together quick enough for this year. It’s a must-do for next summer! #ellchat
I know there are grants available. We’re wanting to keep our library open for families next summer, too. Once families feel safe with us, it makes sense to make the most of our shared spaces. #ELLChat
A4) Send home resources such as online English games and series of videos they can watch so they are exposed to English over the summer. Give a notebook so students can keep a journal, even if it is a sentence per day, so they are writing in English. #ELLchat
A4) Have ELLs collect something during the summer. Provide a place on a class blog for students to upload pictures and write a few sentences about their collections. This would work well for ELLs who are traveling. #ELLchat
We offer summer school 4 days a week, host a summer literacy camp once a week, and send home lots of books for our students to read over the summer. I have a wonderful reading program during the school year. My students and parents are in the routine of reading at home. #ELLCHAT
A4)1st learning needs to be solid, rather than a ‘race to the top’ I’ve always believed the faster the progression, the easier it will be to lose it.2nd-make learning integrated across content areas for deeper learning.3rd, involve families as early and often as possible.#ELLChat
A5: I know some teachers send home a list of resources...includes community program info, library info, apps that students can download on their phone...#ELLchat
A4b) Reach out to the parents to stress the importance of continued engagement and exposure to English over the summer. Usually parents are responsive and will find one way or another to make sure their child has access to English. It's a joint effort. #ELLchat
A4. Last summer I kept in touch with my students’ parents. We shared pictures of our travels with each other and sent “voice texts” for the pre-readers. I plan to do something more organized this year to keep my students reading and engaged. #ELLCHAT
A4: Home visits can help keep students accountable for daily reading over the summer.
A parent told me last week that as soon as she mentioned that I was checking on him, he grabbed the book and started reading 🤣☀️📖📚

A3: #ellchat if the student is a newcomer, we offer them summer school. I feel that with the internet being so powerful, a lot of resources can be found online so that they don't have to travel. The only problem is that lack of internet at home.
A4: #ellchat I feel that if we provide some helpful resources such as webpages, local library, parent center, it would allow them to keep the what they have learned during their academic school year and minimize regression. I think the hardest part is them actually using it.
We take weekly trips to our neighborhood library so that our kids feel welcome there and can use the technology there. Not a guarantee, but another opportunity for them to have access. #ELLChat

A5) It’s a great topic for an end of year parent advisory committee event. We ended the year with a Community Fair attended by local organizations who shared information about resources and programs they provide. Next year I’m definitely incorporating summer slide info! #ellchat
A5: The best thing we can do is create strong relationships with our students’ parents — THIS will give opportunities to encourage our families to maintaining the academic engagement during the summer
#ellchat
A5) relationships w/ families need to begin long before summer so that trust is present. We also need to consider what families are balancing and make requests that are reasonable & attainable. Ideally we can give families supplies & resources. #ellchat
We also have the librarian come to our school a couple of times during the year to build relationships with or kids so that they feel more welcomed. #ELLChat
A5.
1. Host events at school and public library to discuss summer reading and education programs
2. Inform them about free events for families in our area!
3. Check in once or twice during the summer #ELLCHAT
A5) If families are on vacation, ask them to •Learning While Vacationing: If parents are planning on taking a vacation this summer, ask them to research the destination's history, cuisine, popular attractions, with their child. #ELLCHAT
A5 Look for a community organization that might help you compile a list of enrichment activities for families with discounts- a great volunteer job for college student #ELLChat
A6: I appreciated ideas shared by others on #ELLChat for informing parents about how to combat summer learning loss. Also hoping for more summer school spots for ELLs.
A5) Many parents who don’t speak English themselves don’t know that the summer slide is even a thing! So tell them summer slide is REAL, then give suggestions of what Ss can do over the summer. #ELLchat
A6) I think schools should centralize the information about summer activities so it's not hit or miss with individual teachers. These ideas would be a good start to a list. #ELLCHAT
A6) i wish we had more time. Our summer program is only through June; there are options for July, but not at many locations. I also wish we could get WiFi in our neighborhoods for families. I think @CoxComm might be doing something like this. #ellchat

A6 Reading lists can seem boring and burdensome- and prizes mean so many students try to do the whole list the last day of summer! Some kind of midway checking or contacts would help #ELLChat

@OmahaSupt provided an opportunity for all #kindergarten kids to build their own summer reading list by choosing 10 books to keep (and in Spanish, too!) kids are more likely to read when they have the books available to them. #ELLChat
