Before the 1st question – please introduce yourself and your position - Who is all out there?
Hi all - Trista - elementary principal from Iowa
This is Kyle Palmer, elem principal, Solution Tree Associate - Liberty, MO
Hey Kyle - Jumping in for a bit. Ben - Elementary AP from WI
Dan, business teacher from St. Louis popping in and out tonight.
Thanks for joining, hoping all is well!
Please use the Q1, A1 format…..
Hello, Marty here. Director of Secondary Ed in Arkansas.
Hello! Chris Tucker, assistant principal in Indiana
Opening tweet- “We are doing a great job of preparing kids for a future that is no longer there- Sheninger-”
Q1- “What is your “why” on the need to transform your school/district to create a school for kids?”
A1: because we need to but the care of the S before the curriculum. We invest in them, they'll invest in school. Win win
A1: My Ss deserve to have the best, most engaging education possible. Plus, helps individualize their learning.
A1- the needs for kids are changing so much on what it takes for them to be successful in the 21st century
A1-It's our job to prepare ALL kids for a future of the unknown- we need to teach Ss to learn, problem solve & think critically
Have to stop trying to pack facts in their heads, these skills so much more important
A1: Kids are the reason we do what we do - they should be the main focus.
Q2- What is one thing you have done in your classroom or school to make it more engaging for students?”
A1 to equip students to problemslv, collaborate & create in a career that may not exist. It's not about content/ its adaptability.
YES! They can just Google for facts. Need to go deeper & teach how to use the facts & make them relevant
A2: I've started using badges to individualize teaching. Same skills learned through different paths. Plus Ss like to collect them
A2: we began implementing The Leader in Me. So amazing to watch kids transform into little leaders.
A2- We have implemented STEM through - our Ss LOVE EVERY SECOND OF IT- highly recommend to others
A2 added Career Development Facilitators to ensure students are intentional in choosing their learning options
Awesome, we are starting some pieces of this next year- can't wait to build better leaders
A2: I have used more technology to help keep Ss engaged since they have it at their fingertips all day.
Any specific programs or apps that you have found successful?
A2 expansions of concurrent credit options and internship options
We too use PLTW & it has been a wonderful engaging hands on curr that pushing S prob solving & Crit thinking
A2 communicate skill and technical options and attempting to change the negative perception concerning those
I missed question 2. Could someone retweet it?
I use Google classroom the most. They use Google forms/docs to take tests and submit work to me.
Can you tell me more about The Leader in Me? What grades is it for?
A2- We had a teacher use today, sounded like it was a big hit!
Q3- “We don’t want technology to be a digital pacifier. How can we keep instruction the top priority?”
A3: Continue developing curriculum that focuses on outcomes and find tools/texts/etc. that support the learning.
Great! I'll definitely be looking into it.
A3 develop PLC's that create a collaborative culture in which everyone owns the students' learning.
A3- We need to make sure that Ss are using tech with a purpose.
A3- We've always tried to see how technology could leverage learning, not be the learning.
We do bio medical, computer science, engineering -both modules
Always need to remember that tech is just a tool-it's what we do with it-publish, connect globally, create, collaborate & communicate
Q4- “As we continue to try and transform our schools, what is ONE thing to always remember is very important?”
A4: It's always got to be about the kids. Every decision, every time. Kids 1st.
A4 We are all learners & we need to cont to learn to cont to be our best for all students.
A4- I think it's very important as a leader to encourage risk-taking and build a culture of always trying to do and be better.
A4 eliminate excuses for lack of student learning and lack of innovative instructional strategy adoption
Sometimes that's harder than it should be but must persevere through
A4: Remember that the Ts who struggle with tech still have valuable ideas and should be listened to.
A4- I also can't stress enough the importance of relationships- everything starts there
It sure can be. To many times some fight to do what is easier for them, not best for students.
Q5- “What resources (books, videos, Twitter follows), do you recommend to help others increase their capacity for support?”
A5- I have read a lot of books... Digital Leadership by and by are hard to beat!
A5- we also did as a book study this year....I have some books and Counting What Counts ready to go
That had to be an awesome experience
