Just finished reading both SDNY & Mueller memo. TL;DR version:
-Cohen is a crook. He's going to be locked up.
-Not one piece of data involving Russian collusion.
-Mueller is making a big deal of Trump's "Moscow Project" development idea, which never actually got off the ground.

Great topic and a great convo about to happen.
Questions postin in 1 minute.
A1: Empathy is understanding what another person is experiencing or feeling. Empathy allows one to share in the emotional state of another person. It is a precursor to actions of care and responsibility for others. #satchat
It's great that you're here! Middle school is are so formative when it comes to emotional learning. You'll be ready to launch some great #sparkempathy ideas by the time this chat is over! #satchat

A1: Empathy is the ability to recognize, relate to, understand and feel what others are feeling, putting yourself in their moment and sharing it with them, putting yourself in their shoes, so to speak 😊 caring about them and their feelings #satchat
Morning, Cristy! I think foreign language teachers have a special empathy about teaching empathy! You'll be a leader for this #sparkempathy movement, for sure! #satchat
A1: I think empathy has two parts- being able to understand/relate to what someone feels because you've felt that way/been in that situation and being able to look through their perspective, even if you don't feel the same way. #satchat
A1: Empathy is being able to take on the perspective of another and understand how and why they might feel or the way they do. It is listening. It is trying to feel the feels of a another human. Empathy is caring. #satchat#SparkEmpathy
A1: When I think of #empathy, I think of the following: “I’m here to feel with you and let you know you’re not alone.” You are aware and see another’s intentions & emotional state. You focus on them and not you. I really like the following quote as well. #satchat
A1: Empathy, IMHO, means intentionally observing the world through another individual's point of view. From there, we can truly relate and collaborate while developing a better understanding of ourselves and our role in our own society. #satchat
A1 #satchat@empatico#sparkempathy I think empathy is experiencing what it is like to be in someone else's shoes, steps, living their story. Empathy is where I think about having the deepest compassion for another human being. Sharing feelings..
A1: seeing & feeling life through the eyes, emotions and situations of others. As educators, we need to build a foundation of empathy for our daily interactions with students & parents #satchat
A1: Empathy in education would include being able 2 understand students socially, emotionally, culturally, academically - making the effort 2 walk in their footsteps even when u'v never been in their shoes #satchat
A1 Empathy is recognizing we all experience things differently. Every person is unique. It’s being curious about another person’s thoughts, feelings, and perspective. It’s trying to understand without judgment. #satchat
A1:I always think of empathy as putting yourself in someone else’s shoes, making an effort to take on their feelings, and embracing their thoughts. #satchat
Prepped for the chat by reviewing Aristotle's ethos, pathos and logos. Empathy certainly should embody all three when we deal with one another-- ethics, sensing and logic. #satchat
A1 Empathy is the ability to share the feelings of joyous occasions, as well as the ability to carry burdens of those with feelings that sit on the opposite side of joy. #satchat
A1: Empathy is the ability to recognize, relate to, understand and feel what others are feeling, putting yourself in their moment and sharing it with them, putting yourself in their shoes, so to speak 😊 caring about them and their feelings #satchat
Morning #satchat friends - it’s cold in central Va! Critically important topic this morning ... some images of an elem sch I visited yesterday .. from art to healthy lunch to dictated K stories to a lovely day
A1: For me, empathy is my accepting of the person I am interacting as who they are, regardless. It is the intentional work to understand the gifts and talents they bring to the conversation. Great reference: https://t.co/f75oAxOlcB#satchat
A1: "Empathy" is one of those words prone to misuse--in the hands of the wrong culture(s), it can be used as a term to distinguish different peoples. Too often being "empathetic" defines the one who wields power in a relationship.
#satchat
The thing about #satchat that everyone is missing is that we are on the verge of runaway climate change and we need a complete re-think of the global economy to ensure a just society & avoid planetary catastrophe.
Any discussion about empathy without an interrogation into whom we are systemically socialized to empathize for and those we are not is incomplete at best. #satchat
A1: Empathy is recognizing + acknowledging another’s feelings. You may have completely understand their situation but you validate their feelings. #satchat
A1 - Empathy is the ability to take into account another person's perspective and act accordingly. It's about thinking of and acting for others. #satchat
In reply to
@MichaelJDunlea, @EmpaticoOrg, @EvolvingEd
A1 I think this Atticus Finch advice sums up #empathy pretty well: "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view .... climb into someone's skin and walk around in it." #satchat
A1: Empathy is when you can connect with a person and put yourself in their shoes w/o experiencing their feelings by actively listening. Then taking it a step further by acting to assist in any way you can. #satchat
Not to oversimplify, but empathy is being willing to "walk in someone else's shoes" and how that singular experience becomes part of how you treat and interact with others, moving forward. #satchat
Well said. The ability to walk in the footsteps of others and help them along the way. Too often we hear educators discuss their empathy, but not always following through with helping others #Satchat
A1. The term 'empathy' is used to describe a wide range of experiences. Emotion researchers generally define empathy as the ability to sense other people’s emotions, coupled with the ability to imagine what someone else might be thinking or feeling. #satchat
I love that you added the perspective piece because in order to truly give empathy you have to be able to change your lens. Thank you so much for this reminder! #SatChat
Morning #satchat crew! Mike Salvatore from NJ here.
A1: I have learned definitions need to be fluid, especially with a word like #empathy. Today I would say envisioning yourself in the exact position as someone else, and attempting to consider their background and circumstance.
#satchat A1: When we have empathy for other people from different backgrounds, cultures, or beliefs, we avoid jumping to conclusions, and seek to understand different perspectives.
A1: I think #empathy can also include knowing that you dont know everything you need to know to understand someone else & working to change that. #satchat
A1: I define it as being able to understand and feel what another person could fee in a given situation. Thus the saying “Put yourself in their shoes” 👟 #SatChat
Chris from Northwest Indiana (@PurdueAlumni)!
A1. I ask my @amazonecho! Empathy is truly understanding someone else's perspectives and feelings.
#satchat
A2: My own experiences in school were not so diverse. Students were expected to demonstrate knowledge in the same way as there were limited options for creativity. As a SpEd teacher, I try to give my students several opportunities to show what they know. #satchat
@schug_dennis I agree that empathy definitely defines how you treats others moving forward and it changes perspectives and outcomes. Hopefully, erasing preconceived notions too. #satchat
Not to oversimplify, but empathy is being willing to "walk in someone else's shoes" and how that singular experience becomes part of how you treat and interact with others, moving forward. #satchat
Great point David! Understanding without judgment means coming to the situation without looking through a negative, deficit-oriented lens...i.e. it's not "those kids," it's "our kids." #SatChat
I try to ask myself why that person is angry and how I would feel if I were in their place. It can be quite humbling, especially when it is a student who is angry with me. I've forged some amazing relationships by doing so, though. #satchat
But is that empathy? Thinking about why someone feels anger seems to move beyond empathy into trying to fix the problem...you’ve hit on my thoughts - we avoid empathy with anger #satchat
Good Morning from Central Texas!
A1: Empathy-the ability to understand/share the feelings of others through a connection of humanity while remaining outside of the situation
#satchat
My daughter is reading TKAM right now at school and has declared it her favorite book ever! Makes me so happy as it was always one of my favorites to teach, on so many levels! #satchat
A2: Not very diverse. Pretty much everyone was just like me. Small Catholic grade school, relatively small suburban public high school in Western NY. I think the impact of that was I had to change my thinking very quickly when i was thrown into a diverse world. #satchat
A2: I grew up in @SBSDBOE
and had a very diverse schooling experience. I had friends/classmates of all different cultures, religions, etc. This helped foster a more well-rounded view (without even knowing) of how/why people might respond in varying situations. #satchat
A1: To empathize we must be able to see & feel what someone else is experiencing. How many different perspectives are we bringing to our classrooms to make this happen for all of our students? #satchat#globaled
It drives mine, too. It always has. I just never thought to add that word to my own definition of empathy. I will from now on when I talk to others about #sparkempathy. I'm glad you pointed it out to me. #satchat
A2: actually fairly diverse depending on who you’d talk to. I could connect with people from similar or very different backgrounds. #satchat#sparkempathy
A2: My experience in school as a young child, was not diverse, which led me to wonder why and look outside my own experiences to learn diversity and acceptance, it actually opened my eyes and my mind, broadening my perspective and world views #satchat
A2. My experience was not diverse, a 1 on a 10 pt scale. I was so blind to what is going on. It took until I was 45 in a National Fellowship to develop friendships w/ POC & finally see. Sadly my class now is a 1 #Satchat#SparkEmpathy#TheEmpathyProject@EmpaticoOrg@EvolvingEd
A6: The jigsaw classroom technique was originally developed to reduce racial cliques in integrated schools in the 1950s. Teachers can use jigsaw classroom to foster a culture of empathy when students have to learn from each other to fully understand the topic. #satchat
So; do we do that with sadness (when tears come)? Why is anger about control? I wonder how our society has crafted the narrative around anger and the expression of anger to be so problematic #satchat
A2, I went to a magnet high school that was pretty racially balanced. As an AA, that really helped to broaden my horizons and understand different cultures. #satchat
Would you like to visit many beautiful places around world which you will never forget? Plan your #vacations before you are available for #travelling. Have nice #holidays 🙋♂️✈️ #satchat
A2 - My personal experience wasn't particularly diverse K-12 in terms of race. There was some religious diversity, but not much. College was a different story and allowed me to learn about cultural differences first hand. #satchat
A1. Two types: (1) Affective empathy--refers to the sensations/feelings we get in response to others’ emotions; and (2) Cognitive empathy--refers to our ability to identify and understand other people’s emotions. #satchat
I’m not saying to fix the problem. I’m saying we need to understand the feeling they are having - it’s usually more than meets the eye. Fixing is another issue #satchat
But is that empathy? Thinking about why someone feels anger seems to move beyond empathy into trying to fix the problem...you’ve hit on my thoughts - we avoid empathy with anger #satchat
A2: I was fortunate to experience a lot of diversity. Not so much in my school, but in my opportunities through dance. It definitely affected me in a positive way and taught me that our uniqueness is what makes the world interesting. #satchat
A2: Not much diversity where I grew up. I work in a much more diverse SD, so making an effort to learn and empathize with those with different lenses happens daily. #satchat
A2# I grew up in pretty homogenized, lily white communities in the Chicago area. My exposure to other cultures was primarily through a TV screen. It wasn't until high school/college that I had real understanding about what it was like to grow up in a different culture #satchat
My school exp was quite negative, I hated school. Which is why I became a T and work hard for engagement, understanding and relationship building. #satchat
A2: My school experience wasn't until college. I lived in an international dorm & on 9/11 witnessed the harassment of my Arabic friends. Helped open my eyes. Also saw friends who stayed in my hometown grow into closed minds. #satchat
A2: I went to Catholic school in suburbia. It was the opposite of diversity, but somewhere in there I was taught VERY strong empathetic values. I was always taught to find good in others, find ways to be a helper, listen to understand, & to love all humans #satchat#SparkEmpathy
A2 My schooling included moving every two years, "forced busing", a large high school with diversity in students (but not staff), and a great experience at @MarquetteU. Each gave me a different view of the world. #satchat
A2: I moved around a lot so that gave an opportunity for some diversity, but I really only had one year that was very diverse. Just read https://t.co/rzt4RmKJPy. I think I didn't want to know what lots of racial minorities really experience in school. #satchat
#satchat A2: Lol. I'm from WV where 98% of the people look like me, and had the same cultural heritage, so I did not grow up with diversity. That changed, though, when I arrived at the (best) state uni to a degree. Tons of int'l ppl, and I was a French major.
A2: Not very diverse until I got to college. My hometown was very homogeneous. Being around people from all walks of life helped me develop stronger empathy skills. #satchat@MichaelJDunlea
A2: I live in a small town in the south. Here diversity consisted of two things when I was in school... white/black and which Christian denomination you were. It’s more diverse now, but I’d say these are still the two biggest things. #SatChat
My experience in school while growing up was well-rounded, we had students of different cultures, religion, nationalities, etc. The only thing that I did notice that is different from today is the differentiated instruction. #satchat
A2-My school was not diverse racially; but it was very diverse in terms of educational backgrounds. Classmates with college educated parents; me and others whose parents had HS degrees only. #satchat
A2: my experience wasn’t diverse at all. And honestly, my first few years in education exposed that. I had little empathy for Ss because when I was in school, Ts had none for me. I had to realize the importance of relationships for this to change #satchat
When someone is sad or crying, empathy is usually just being sad with them. Feeling the emotion. When someone is angry, my reaction tends to want to convince them they shouldn’t be angry, not to get angry with them. Just self reflecting. #satchat
A2) Mostly parochial school which meant very little diversity but I had a wonderful experience in middle school attending a performing arts school in the city—changed my perspective forever. #satchat
A2 I'm from Melbourne Australia - one large city down in the south - diversity was all around me growing up as different ways of migration have meant we cultures from all over the world - so schooling experience meant growing up with many friends from different heritages #Satchat
A2 growing up in diverse settings makes you aware that the house you go home to (if you are blessed enough) is not the same as everyone Else and that’s ok. hard to remember as edus that kids don’t live our lives. And it doesn’t have to be poverty to be different #satchat
A2 Diversity was rather limited in school and even college for that matter. I've learned I have to be intentional about being diverse. I can't always wait for it to just happen. #satchat
A2- This impacted me as an adult in strong way. As a educator I take into account what my students learning styles are and what I can do to help them grow academically. #satchat
A2: Not very diverse until college. I think big part of #empathy includes a mindset to be open 2 question ur own belief system & ideologies. Reminds me of the old Johari window #satchat
A2: The only diversity at my school was in terms of economic status. I remember the whole paradigm shifted the first day we got an African American student. #satchat
A2. Very diverse and it has impacted me as an adult because I strive to provide students with the skills & confidence to succeed regardless their situation.
#satchat
A2: There was some diversity in my school growing up, but I really had no awareness of the global community and that is something I feel is so important to share with our students. #Satchat#SparkEmpathy#TheEmpathyProject@EmpaticoOrg
A2: My school experiences as a youngster were very diverse, this provided me with a view into other cultures, religions, successes, and struggles that help me better understand the world around me. #satchat
Many define of Empathy were awesome, but if that, what would be the define of sympathy? Can we confuse the two? Is one more powerful, or useful, then the other? #satchat
A2 Diversity in school growing up was wide ranged. My elementary school was made up of mostly low to middle class white families, and my junior high - high schools was true diversity amongst all income levels and of ethnicities of about 30% black and 70% white students. #satchat
A2 little diversity in sch experiences but more in my farm community -living thru the 60s emerged emotions of empathy from multiple sources F2F and from media - and adult role models were key #satchat

A1 Empathy is recognizing we all experience things differently. Every person is unique. It’s being curious about another person’s thoughts, feelings, and perspective. It’s trying to understand without judgment. #satchat
A2: My early childhood education I attended a school that was primarily African American. We had students from all socioeconomic backgrounds. Then my secondary education I attended well diverse schools. This experience taught me to listen to and appreciate ppl. #satchat
When someone is sad or crying, empathy is usually just being sad with them. Feeling the emotion. When someone is angry, my reaction tends to want to convince them they shouldn’t be angry, not to get angry with them. Just self reflecting. #satchat
I think that there has to be room for it, but I know an awful lot of educators who don't want to and so they are causing damage to their students and others around them. Empathy ought to include the full span of human emotion, not just parts of it. #satchat
We can create environments in our classrooms and schools that value diversity, even when it may not be physically present=> Books, articles, media all provide chances to invite and expose, but not impose #satchat
Now I’m reflecting on empathy and diversity. When a child is sad and crying, we often let them be sad. When a child is angry; especially one who has identities that are marginalized- how often do they get sent to the office for anger? #satchat
A2: part 1 of 2. Very diverse experience. Not only multiple countries, but also starting out in a diverse social economic and racial background elementary school to a middle school full of Jewish people, Italians, Eastern Europe and Asian background kids. #satchat
@JEFordNCTOY said recently to me “If we don’t prepare our S’s to interact w/ people who are different have we done our jobs? Are they fully developed people if they can’t?” #satchat
A2: My experience was fairly diverse. When I got to college so much of the orientation process was about respecting others cultures and diversity and I didn't understand why we kept talking about that until I realized my experience wasn't the norm. #SatChat
#satchat A2 cont: The college experience of meeting ppl who were from other countries, but also city kids from NJ/NY/PA opened my eyes, and impacted me tremendously. I've spent my life studying, teaching, & experiencing the products, practices, & perspectives of various cultures.
A2: I was raised in an urban environment where so many cultures and experiences were a daily part of my existence. My childhood was enriched by being a part of so many different families and perspectives. #satchat
A4: I think we need to start by offering students in our own classrooms the opportunity to share their stories and backgrounds. Then we need to take advantage of technology to connect with people in other schools and in other countries. #satchat
A2: The juxtaposition of "diversity" and "empathy" jostles a bit, and gets to the heart of any real attempt at empathy. I think these conversations matter, but the questions reveal *our* implicit biases.
#satchat
A2: My school experience was pretty diverse - many different races and cultures represented. It taught me how to celebrate differences. Check out this interesting article on how diversity changes the brain of a child https://t.co/dNQbpL6PMW#satchat
A2: I think it’s important or educators, particularly ones like me who lacked diversity in their own schooling, to seek out employment in diverse environments at some point in their career to provide a more rich perspective #satchat
A2: How did this shape me? As a secretly gay white kid growing up in a Southern Baptist Church, I looked for anyone and everyone who was different in HS so I could find comfort in numbers. The diversity I found made me feel normal. #satchat
A2: I live in a small town in the south. Here diversity consisted of two things when I was in school... white/black and which Christian denomination you were. It’s more diverse now, but I’d say these are still the two biggest things. #SatChat
A2: My childhood was diverse but what really helped me understand the world was the conversations that my parents had with my bro and I. They were consistently working on creating a life for us that gave us opportunities but always made us look at the world as a whole. #satchat
A2: Mine was pretty average I think. I generally enjoyed my schooling. Had some very good teachers that guided and pushed me. In HS, I was involved in student council and activities - best decision I made as a student ! #SatChat
A2. My wife went to a suburban elem school where she was the only AA female her whole life. I once went to an urban elem school where there were only 2 white people and they were siblings. I was glad to later see others. #satchat
A1 #Satchat Jeri fr Jersey, English T; Late-sry! The ability to put yourself in someone else's shoes in terms of feelings and emotions to a given situation. You are able to care deeply about the person due to that ability. It is sympathy amped up with action!
A2: My experience as a child was unique in that the town I grew up in had ZERO diversity, but we shared an elementary school with a borough that also lacked diversity. Two homogeneous neighborhoods joining, but nothing acknowledged. Early on I recognized something was off #satchat
A3: Creating opportunities for students to interact with others who have different life experiences is important for the development of a well-rounded student. It allows them to develop positive relationship skills which is necessary for a safe and positive classroom. #satchat
A2: Not diverse until HS. Started in a private school & transitioned to public in 6th gr. It wasn't until college until I learned about diversity & built relationships w/people from across the globe. As a parent I've given my children a different experience than I had #satchat
A2: grew up in a small town with many different religions and races. There wasn’t so much labeling happening like there is today. My friends weren’t Hispanic, Jewish or Muslim. They were my friends. Today, the “label” seems to outshine the person. #satchat
Amazing to experience the impact when we allow ourselves to get closer to a situation (or we establish trust to let others let us in) how much better we can understand & appreciate the experiences that shape who we are. Shifting perspectives definitely shifts outcomes! #Satchat
A2: My school growing up lacked in variety/ I was kept in a "bubble." I did not understand empathy, & have learned to build up the emotion throughout my years teaching. I work now in the same system that I grew up in, but we all do well helping our kids empathize #SatChat
A2: My personal schooling experiences were in a suburban district full of diversity in both ethnic and racial realms. I think this definitely gave me a perspective of understanding people's differences and how to treat people without judgment or preconceptions #satchat
A3: Giving kids opportunities to engage with and get to know others from different backgrounds opens them to the world, norms, cultures and perspectives of others, creating caring, accepting well-rounded individuals 😊 💕 #satchat
A3: There’s a lot of learning that can happen when we interact with people different from us. Was just talking about Peace Corps volunteers - how many Americans ended up with a world view and ideas very different than their experiences. There’s so much value in that! #satchat
A2: I like a few other responders didn’t experience cultural diversity until college and later as an educator. I backpacked through Europe for two summers and it opened up my eyes to the world and the beauty of it’s differences. #SatChat
Sometimes anger can be a positive motivator to change. I recently made a decision I probably should have before because something made me angry. #satchat
#satchat Parent/guardian/family observations & conversations -- This is it! The strongest influence on a child's views of the world early on can have a huge impact.
A2: My childhood was diverse but what really helped me understand the world was the conversations that my parents had with my bro and I. They were consistently working on creating a life for us that gave us opportunities but always made us look at the world as a whole. #satchat
We moved around a lot when I was growing up. I went to big schools, small schools, diverse schools, not diverse schools, rough schools, safe schools, etc.
Taught me to get along with all kinds of different people.
#Satchat
We can change that for our students today. I still have the same class makeup that I experienced and am finding ways to have experiences beyond the walls that brings empathy into it #satchat
A2 #satchat I went to school many years ago (I'm 62). We moved from the city (diverse) to suburbia (not so much). My experience was not diverse until I went away to college and lived on my own. I moved right back to a more urban area. Diversity brings richness to life.
Diversity in my school ... as what the neighbor used to call me as a kid "half-breed" i was the minority ... son of a white father and a hispanic mother ... my Mom was one of two brown women in town. there was only one thought process here when it came to color. #satchat
A3. Ruby Bridges said racism is an adult disease, Scientists say research shows young children develop biases during the ages of 8-10. Giving S's the time & place to meet other S's allows for the opinions to form naturally #Satchat#SparkEmpathy#TheEmpathyProject@EmpaticoOrg
A3: Interactions between diverse students serve as doors of opportunity to build the character and interpersonal skills that are needed for the real world. The more you know (about/from other people), the more you grow. #satchat
A2: My K-12 experience was not very racially or ethnically diverse, but when we look deeper, we see a lot more diversity: religion, home culture, family finances, political beliefs, physical ability, mental health, etc. I was only aware of some of these as a child. #satchat
A3. Of course its to find the common experience of being human. But more importantly it's to get beyond "The Breakfast Club" stereotypes - jock, prep, nerd, emo, etc. #satchat
A2 Racially narrow, Socio-Economic- Wide. Playing on baseball teams w/teammates of other towns opened up diversity to me & taught us all although our backgrounds were different we all could work together for same goal #satchat
A3 - If we want to help grow caring, committed citizens who contribute to society, when need to expose kids to all of our society, particularly those who are different. Everyone has something to add. #satchat
In reply to
@MichaelJDunlea, @EmpaticoOrg, @EvolvingEd
Frankly, it wasn't. So as an adult, I've made the commitment to change that. Vulnerability (especially as an adult) is where learning happens. #Satchat
Good morning, #satchat! Chi, Director & AP Bio Teacher from FL here. A1 Empathy is a multi-tiered skill set that involves the capacity to understand a situation from another's perspective.
In reply to
@MichaelJDunlea, @EmpaticoOrg, @EvolvingEd
A3: It's critical for kids to see & know that there are others who live, learn, & look different than they do. Children don't have adult biases, & they just see other children- other friends. Imagine HOW FAR that feeling can help the 🌎 as they carry it into adulthood. #satchat
Aki's answer should remind us that diversity goes beyond race to include multiple variables. Ethnicity, economics, educational backgrounds, experiences. #satchat
A2: part 1 of 2. Very diverse experience. Not only multiple countries, but also starting out in a diverse social economic and racial background elementary school to a middle school full of Jewish people, Italians, Eastern Europe and Asian background kids. #satchat
A2 I grew up in the neighborhood with rich and poor, black and white, and we all got along. Those with less were more willing to share than those that had more. #satchat
A2 Diversity in school growing up was wide ranged. My elementary school was made up of mostly low to middle class white families, and my junior high - high schools was true diversity amongst all income levels and of ethnicities of about 30% black and 70% white students. #satchat
So you can see why it matters so much. Too many classrooms lack it. No one has the opportunity to grow and understand one another if they never meet. #satchat
A2. Diversity can be identifies thru many categories. Diversity aids in knowledge/exposure that helps 1 understand/connect - BUT 1 must be open to recognizing/reflecting on any degree/type of diversity for it to matter at all. #satchat
A2: not very at all, but my university experience was and as a former world lang teacher, it’s taught me to take the time to learn more about others and their backgrounds. It’s helped me understand learning more effectively #satchat
Looking to do a district PD about this in Feb. Would love to have input from those willing to share their experiences on these platforms & any others. #satchat
A3: As towns become more diverse, it more important than ever to embrace students’ cultural backgrounds and to weave it, flawlessly, into your curriculum & classroom activities. Valuing & teaching diversity leads to increased well-being of ALL children in schools. #satchat
A3 Our students need to be given as many experiences as possible to connect with others. It's what the real world is. No where do you really hang out with people who are just like you all day long. #satchat
A3: 1. We are educators, creating these opportunities educates. 2. Because it’s hard to hate someone you’ve learned to love. 3. Maybe they will grow up and vote better. ;) #satchat
And sending kids to the office because they are angry instead of finding out why and trying to help: that hits on my "discipline is not punishment and vice versa" soap box so hard! #satchat
A3: Kind of like learning a foreign language...I think these opportunities help students appreciate and understand not only other cultures, but their own as well. #satchat
A3. As @brewerhm states, what's the most important thing in the world....THE PEOPLE, THE PEOPLE, THE PEOPLE!
@micheleborba - UNselfie speaks on empathy and students lack this vital skill.
#satchat
A3:This is much needed to create Ss that will become respectful, inclusive, open-minded, and caring global citizens that connect & embrace ALL they come in contact with. #satchat Exposure and experience is key...
A3. Somewhere in 4-6th grade kids start to@notice differences with peers and begin to establish idea of the other and you hear “that’s weird” a lot. Turning weird into curiosity instead of judgement is empathy in action. #satchat
A3 The only way we authentically understand another’s life story is to interact with them. So much of what students receive as truth is from an outside source. Interacting and creating real relationships with the real source of diversity creates empathy and understanding #satchat
A3. Diversity isn't just the color of our skins. It's often easy to forget that even in NNJ where there are plenty of seemingly surface diversity, there's different social economic backgrounds. Kids from single parent homes. First generation to aspire for college. Etc #satchat
A3 The world is no longer “Growing on the 40, living on the 40, and die on the 40” but that even local decisions have real WORLD implications, plus the mobility of the worlds population is immense. #satchat
A3: It is important bc students get to broaden their perspectives of the world even w/o experiencing it first hand. I was introduced to a lot of things that I never imagined seeing/doing simply by interacting w/ my peers #satchat
A3: Giving Ss the chance to interact in a diverse setting allows them to understand and accept people's differences... It goes beyond empathy and starts addressing implicit biases and perceptions #satchat
I use this with my Maker Ambassador students to help them notice all of the different perspectives of the people in a hospital. A Lesson in Empathy | Design Thinking #satchat#dtk12chat#empathyhttps://t.co/tNx9TdaAR4
A3: they need to get out of their own head, their own box. #NoMoreSilo Volunteering does this immediately. Altruism and empathy are lacking in today’s youth. Real-world experiences needed to help ALL diversities truly “walk a mile in someone’s else’s shoes.” #satchat
A2 Joe, elementary principal in WI. Wouldn’t say there was a lot of diversity, but not sure how mindful of that I was. I’m fortunate to have had teachers who challenged thinking as it relates to acceptance of others & cultural understanding. #satchat

Looking to do a district PD about this in Feb. Would love to have input from those willing to share their experiences on these platforms & any others. #satchat
A3: Diversity, in all its forms, is a strength. we all benefit as humans beings from broadening our experiences, as those experiences broaden our thinking. Can't get locked in to standardized thinking. That does not serve students well. #satchat
Taking our students beyond the walls of our classrooms is a great way to develop empathy. Our students often have a very small world. We need to help them see a bigger picture. #satchat
How did it impact your world view? How do you feel when you meet people who are different? Those who didn’t have that exposure sometimes feel fear. #satchat
I'd be happy to help if I can! I'd love to help you find ways to connect your students to the world and to work toward action projects like the #TeachSDGs! #SatChat#SparkEmpathy
A3: Students need those experiences to build empathy- the earlier the better. I think this starts as simple as classroom meetings in elem which brings out exp. of others. They need diverse lessons, understanding parents, opp. to travel. The list could go on 4ever
#SatChat
A3 #satchat As I said in A2-Diversity adds richness 2 life. Different cultures, different histories - it puts knowledge & background into where we all came from & how we all function in different situations. In school, if it happens naturally, it helps to take away judgments made
A3 Conversations themselves are essential to learning; they lead to listening, which can lead to knowing, caring, seeing in new ways; feeling. #satchat
A3: I've been trained, taught, and worked with educators to prepare students for life outside of school. That means they will interact with, work with, and collaborate with, others who have different life experiences. It's essential for success & key to their future #satchat
A3: Diversity directly impacts student development and performance because it helps them think about different perspectives in the creative, problem solving process - an essential skill they will use for a lifetime! #SatChat
It is critical to teach kids the role they play in shrinking the globe 🌏- knowledge of diversity is a key tenet of Empathetic Global Citizenship #satchat
A3 Opportunities to interact with people with different life experiences reinforces the importance of seeking first to understand before being understood. It's about communication skills. #satchat
A3: And here is the crux--too many of *us* read this without blinking an eye, as though the others unlike us exist so we can, um, expand our life experiences.
This is often followed up with a photo of one of us taking a selfie with some PoC., because, well....
#satchat
A3: Learning about those different than themselves helps Ss build not only empathy but understanding, kindness and friendships. Unless they have those experiences it’s just theoretical. #satchat#empathy@MichaelJDunlea
“Although we may believe that we can't take risks until we first build trust among those in a group, trust is actually built by taking risks together.” —Ron Beghetto #satchat#edchathttps://t.co/ojl0bmCBd6 (log-in req)
A3: Diversity, in all its forms, is a strength. we all benefit as humans beings from broadening our experiences, as those experiences broaden our thinking. Can't get locked in to standardized thinking. That does not serve students well. #satchat
A3: The earlier the exposure to diversity, the quickest way for students to understand that we all are different, unique but share the same thread of being humans and existing on the planet at the same time. #satchat
A3 It's important to create situations during the school day to allow kids to socialize & interact w/each other, not just in the lunchroom. If they cannot empathize w/kids they see day to day, why would we expect them to empathize w/others outside of "their world" #satchat
A3: Goes back to Q1, you have to WANT to care! We need to teach our children the value of caring for & about others. This aids in knocking down the barriers, which so easily keep us divided. #satchat
Good for you, Justin #satchat -- for educators, Twitter is the best form of PD. I love #satchat if I can get up early enough -- but even if I can't, I answer the questions later and read responses to help me learn different points of view on topics relevant to education!
A4: A diverse classroom library collection is a good way to spark empathy through literature. @Newsela is a useful tool to engage readers of all levels to be aware of current events and know what people are experiencing in other parts of the world. #satchat
A3: Ss need to see someone else's life through their eyes. This develops a deeper understanding but also, they may have similarities, that makes them say, "Wow! I didn't know that!" From there...more problem solving and EMPATHY! #satchat
I'd like to push back on that some: I know many people who are born, raised, and spend their whole lives in the same community with people who, by and large, look, sound, and act like them--maybe not exactly, but close enough. How do we help them see value in empathy? #satchat
A2 coming to “know” the experience of others who for a variety of reasons are in pain in school or home can elicit a range of emotions from us - how we respond as adults - how we ourselves live empathy with those who may push us away is key for children to see from us #satchat
"The Earlier The Better"!!!!!!! Yes, absolutely 100% true. Have you signed up with @EmpaticoOrg yet? Let me know if you need help getting started or want to explore it further. It will change your classroom, your school, and your students' perspectives! #satchat#SparkEmpathy
A3: I think #Dewey said it best. Diversity is important to a democracy. Without a concern for the greater good for all, you really dont have a democracy. #Satchat
Using these visuals to guide thinking about teaching and learning- both for our students and our teachers...we need to take the time to KNOW THE WHY and have students and teachers internalize these questions TOGETHER to get there! #leadlap#satchat
A3: I've been trained, taught, and worked with educators to prepare students for life outside of school. That means they will interact with, work with, and collaborate with, others who have different life experiences. It's essential for success & key to their future #satchat
A3 The question is how do you create those opportunities organically & intentionally? School cultures founded on the elements of wellbeing create conditions for caring, understanding, empathy, and addressing needs of all stakeholders. Wellbeing leads to equity. #satchat
A3-Helping students interact with others means they learn what makes us similar. We need to stop driving wedges with diversity and instead use it to build bridges. #satchat
A3 It's about creating a society in which equity, social justice & equality are at the foreground in all that we do - and students need to see, hear, listen & understand about experiences of all within their society - as they are the future #satchat
A3. Somewhere in 4-6th grade kids start to@notice differences with peers and begin to establish idea of the other and you hear “that’s weird” a lot. Turning weird into curiosity instead of judgement is empathy in action. #satchat
A3: students need to hear about other people's lives and lifestyles so they can work towards understanding and acceptance, everyone's culture can play a role in their behavior/outward appearance to others #satchat
A3: and the diversity from which students can benefit is not exclusively “ethnic”. Ss learn from socioeconomic and developmental diversities as well. #satchat
A2 My own educational experience ranged from a Catholic preschool in a different country to public schools in pre-Silicon Valley, northern CA to public schools in the NW suburbs of Chicago, IL. I learned to interact with a lot of people who were not like me. #satchat
In reply to
@MichaelJDunlea, @EmpaticoOrg, @EvolvingEd
A3: First, they have to learn to work with other people in problem solving situations to function as adults. More importantly, their relationships are what make them love school and engage in memorable learning experiences. #satchat
Once again, our district is opening the doors to other educators. Why? All Ss&Ts deserve the best PD possible regards of where they are from, and because most schools might not have funding for PD. FREE, Equality for all! #satchat#Togetherisbetter#tigerstrong#WeB4Me

A3 Our job as educators is to teach our students empathy and how to build relationships. Diversity is an awesome way of learning this lesson genuinely. #SatChat#TheEmpathyProject
I lived in Senegal and The Philippines for a while. I was the only white person for miles some days. That sure helped me to understand what it’s like to be a minority and opened my eyes to my world here at home. Empathy is found when you leave your comfort. #satchat
Only world view fear that I would associate is when there is a language barrier. But even in those cases, a smile, a wave, or a common courtesy normally gets rid of any anxieties that may be present in any party. #satchat
A3. Interaction w others allows us to have greater depths of knowledge about the world, the people in it, and ourselves. What matters tho is that 1 must be open to receiving this interaction with gratitude + positivity! #satchat
A3: You never ever fully know what someone is going through- the world can be a tough place, be a light in another’s life b/c there no doubt that one day you’ll need a guiding light too. #satchat
A4: Make empathy the cornerstone of your #designthinking activities. You must start w/ understanding your user, if you are going to build/create an experience and/or product for them. #satchat
A3: Providing the opportunity to develop relationships and understand cultural differences directly impacts a student’s ability to empathize. It also prepares them for the world outside the walls of their school or town. #satchat
A3: All of our students are part of a global network. It is imperative that we develop their capacity and disposition to impact change. This only happens when they care! They can only care when they understand & empathize. #satchat#globaled@AsiaSociety@EmpaticoOrg@Belouga_
A3: Creating opportunities for students to work alongside others with different life experiences puts them in the shoes of others and helps them recognize basic needs, challenges, and wants of others #satchat#striveforempathy
A1: When I think of #empathy, I think of the following: “I’m here to feel with you and let you know you’re not alone.” You are aware and see another’s intentions & emotional state. You focus on them and not you. I really like the following quote as well. #satchat
A3) I have found that engaging parents of different cultures can be a great resource if your school has that type of diversity. Parents love to share their customs w/ others. Great way to involve parents. #satchat
A4: Teaching kids to listen with the intent to understand others is a beginning, exposure to other cultures, backgrounds and perspectives in class daily, builds relationships, and empathy stems from being able to relate to others #satchat
I see social media posts from teachers who are ECSTATIC when their classroom gets matched or has an exchange. It’s electric!⚡️
As the @EmpaticoOrg facilitator for our entire #EmpaticoDistrict, I’m living that DAILY now with 175 teachers & 3210 students! #SparkEmpathy#satchat
Yes! but amazingly, many state policies that set requirements for entrance to teacher ed include criteria that exclude non-white students and students from poverty. State lawmakers need to make changes to reflect the society we live in. Gr8 point. #satchat@S_M_Kelly
Love using the photos of “Where Children Sleep” to begin convos of diversity and experiences with 6th graders. Comparing bedrooms, or lack of, drives home the opportunity many of us were born into. #satchat
A4: Connecting with others from different cultures. LUCKY FOR ME, I teach at a beautiful school that is comprised of refugees from all over the world. Our practice is "daily." Our diversity is our culture and it's part of our learning empathy in every lesson. #satchat
Yes! Thank you for saying this because I teach at a non racially diverse school (really a non diverse county), but our economic levels are all over the board. #SatChat
A4: Virtual reality trips. Documentaries for students by students. Diverse teaching, not from a textbook. Students teaching students “a day in the life of...” and @GoogleForEdu and using slidedecks to share experience s across the country and world. #Satchat
A4: Model, model, model. Model how to politely listen to others and ask ?s when they're curious. Also, I recall a writing unit on perspectives from my ST experience. Literature is a great way to foster empathy! (Esp. multicultural lit. to include our #ELLs!) #satchat
A4 Celebrate differences, practice inclusion, and model empathy. We can't expect kids to learn to empathize without modeling the behavior ourselves. #satchat

Big fan of the Montessori Peace Curriculum (PreK and up) and @EmpaticoOrg (K-5).

Yes, I believe empathy has grown over the years. I attended private, Catholic schools my entire life. There was no empathy throughout those buildings. It was “Do what I say!” regardless of what is going on in my life at the time #Satchat
I know those same people, Alex, and I ask the same question. If we don't provide our students the opportunity to experience others who are not like us, how will they react when they do experience others who are not like them? #satchat
#satchat A3: Besides the fact that we're living in an increasingly divided world, our learners need to connect w/ppl of diverse perspectives for those ah-ha moments that could inspire them to change the world or simply seek new opportunities outside of their bubble.
A4: developing trusting reltnsps with your students by listening intently and setting clear boundaries. Creating a culture of love in your school and classroom. Using @EmpaticoOrg to connect to outside. #satchat#sparkempathy

A4. One interesting program I came across at an Edtech Meetup is Amy (Foote) McCooe and her Level Up Village https://t.co/GUwP6It8Ua In fact, she's the first one who mentioned #satchat to me. #satchat
A4 - Making it obvious that every student is valued, cared for, and an important part of the class and school. Seeing that everyone matters is the first step to empathy. #satchat

A3: The more we know, the more we are able to do with what we know. So many young people want to change the world; developing empathy for others (meaning everyone who is not you) is a great way to learn and apply new knowledge. #satchat

#satchat Mueller has proved Hillary is above the law, she lied, destroyed evidence, used non gov computer in her home, deleted emails, smashed cell phones, used bleach bits on computers & FBI didn't care. Now M is wants prison 4 Cohen 4 lies, yet use him against Trump
A4: Loving @EmpaticoOrg this year and connecting classes across our district. The students love it and the teachers see such a difference in their levels of empathy and appreciation of diversity! Can't endorse this organization enough!! #satchat
#satchat I think ur response is truth. With my son, even though we live in suburbia w/less diversity, we exposed him 2 diverse cultures early on. It became second nature 2 him. He didn't see color, clothes, differences. He had a natural acceptance.
A2:Dating myself here but I think I was the diversity! My friends and I “crashed” as busing began in response to mandate for integrating schools well after Brown. Gr8 for old/new friends-we embraced, learned about/from,&forged relationships still intact 30+ years later. #satchat
#satchat Do you use @lyft service? Think twice, if you have an accident as a passenger their insurance won't pay for your medical bills #SeduceMenIn4Words
A4) Teach it. Adults must model it. Create a space where empathy is the norm and not just a feel good sentiment. Use of a more restorative approach to discipline is a great tool for empathy. #satchat
You are 1 of the most amazing humans I’ve ever met, & we haven’t actually met. LOL #satchat but through our interactions, work on projects I truly see you as a friend who I understand and feel for when I see your posts. It’s evidence this can happen for S’s the same way. #satchat

A4- We can spark empathy in our classrooms by having students connect, building background, sharing in each others cultures. Also through strategic lessons in the classroom to help them see the bigger picture of having empathy for each other and others. #satchat
#satchat love your discussion! A3 Helping students develop empathy is vital as it is an important moral and life long disposition that will improve the quality of their lives and those around them.

I love that you said “I was the diversity”... As a closeted gay teen, secrecy kept my real self hidden, but inside I knew I was the diversity too. #satchat
A4 I worked at camp with a counselor that was tremendous at what I called "champing the underdog". Do I do that in my classroom? Do I get to know all my students & meet them where they are at. My friend did that in one week, I have 40. #satchat

Can you give me some more details/ideas? Most teachers at my school (& espcially me) are struggling to move Ss to do anything - even "regular" school work. #satchat
A3 we develop empathy through play, conversation, care-taking, story, eating together, service, imagery ... creating opportunities to personally help.. to listen to... to be present in life of another especially those not like us .. not in a distant way but F2F is core #satchat
A5: Restorative justice is an interesting approach to infuse empathy with discipline and behavior management practices. Teachers seeking to change their mindset on challenging student behaviors should look into PD on restorative justice. #satchat

A4: We have to model the behavior we want in our Ss. Deliberately and overtly show empathy for others. Show Ss what that looks like every chance you get! #satchat
A4: Before we can ask our Ss to put themselves in the shoes of others, are we creating the time and space needed for them to understand their own identities?? How are Ss seeing themselves and what impact is it having when they do? #satchat
A4:The best practices for me are modeling, think alouds, building rapport with Ss & their families, and guiding Ss to take the lead in embracing others. #satchat
The SUM of each other is:
-Care for one another
-Belief in one another
-Deep affection for one other
-Autonomy we give each other
-Happiness we give each other
-Trust in one another
TEAMING with each OTHER

I agree, in order to build empathy in the classroom, the educator must first build a relationship among the students and the educator. The educator showed also show empathy in order to help their students build it. #satchat
I was OK with it, too--but it's not OK for a lot of people, they let me know, so I stopped using it. Took me years to realize this, but my intentions do not define the word. I do not get to choose how others hear it.

A4 MIDDLEMARCH builds empathy - texts can do so if multiple perspectives are present and are invited. Issue an invitation! What texts would U choose? #Satchat
As a fourth grade teacher for seven years, I wanted my kiddos to fully embrace weirdness as a great thing. I don't think a week went by without me saying, "Of course you're weird! We're all weird! That's what makes life so awesome!" #satchat
Also hiring practices. At least from what I observed and experienced in NYC area, "having a connection" got you a real interview (not one that was arranged to meet HR requirements).
I've lived in China & now HK - was often stared at in China or photo taken - couldn't speak Mandarin or any other Chinese language - so totally agree until you experience it you'll never know what it feels like to be a minority with a country #satchat
Beautifully said! Throw away what you want to see & begin to see & accept others for who they are! When we do that we can truly show empathy and compassion. That is how a change begins to happen. #satchat
A4 Building empathy in the classroom starts with having relationships where students are comfortable with sharing their feelings. Then you can share parables using your own life experiences in order to help students understand how you have dealt with emotional situations. #satchat

a4: This is our 1st year with webcams/microphones in our elem schools, thanks to @EmpaticoOrg. Helping to finally take our students "outside of our schools' walls" to learn about the world has been one of the greatest professional achievements of my life. #satchat
A5: A basic tool like @SkypeClassroom would be a great PD class for many teachers. I think Ts understand the why, but they don't know the how. And living busy lives, giving them an essential tool to make it happen, will make it exciting and doable. #satchat

Flooding the classroom with texts that provide a variety of perspectives help Ss recognize a few recurring key themes that tend to transcend time and place #satchat
#satchat A5: Travel to locations where one can bring back relevant ideas for the course(s) & experiences/stories to share. Talk to the locals. And then try to connect them with learners.
A4) Empathy begins with listening. It’s important that we create times where we work to hear and understand what others are going through. In all of our interactions with Ss, we must first listen to understand. #satchat

A5-I think a PD on putting restorative practices in place in the classroom. A PD on building empathy in your classroom. A PD on helping your students build social and emotional skills. #satchat
I've lived in China & now HK - was often stared at in China or photo taken - couldn't speak Mandarin or any other Chinese language - so totally agree until you experience it you'll never know what it feels like to be a minority with a country #satchat
Everything @brenebrown is GOLD. Agree 100%. And she is so relatable and has many videos, youtube, interviews on the subject. Great resource! Thank your for mentioning that! I am going to suggest that as a book club for our staff next semester! #satchat
A4 I highly recommend Dare To Lead by Brene Brown @BreneBrown She explains in a very understandable way how vulnerability, empathy, courage are key elements of wholehearted leadership. Research based, understandable, and actionable #satchat
A5: There are so many free online #PD resources in the @MicrosoftEdu Educator community. Of course, you could even use Skype to connect with someone who’s willing to teach your teachers about ways to build a culture of empathy! I’d be happy to help #SparkEmpathy! #satchat
I am so glad you said that. The lessons on @EmpaticoOrg I have described as looking through a window, squint a little and you see yourself reflecting back. When you learn about others you learn about yourself at the same time #satchat
I used to HATE being called “Sensitive” - now I view it as the greatest compliment! It means I connect with people more deeply than most! I’m #highlysensitive and proud of it! #satchat
#satchat A5 cont: If travel isn't possible, we can be reaching out in our own community or some nearby. For French, I connect other French ss 2 hours away, for ex.

And consider some really wonderful, powerful #PD about the sustainable development goals! #TeachSDGs has so many resources for all educators, all subjects, and all grade levels! Your students can take action in many ways! #SparkEmpathy#satchat
This is like I’m a bartender and someone yelled “free drinks for everyone” such a great chat. I’m sorry if I haven’t responded to everyone’s question or comment. I will be reading this thread all day and following everyone #satchat
#Today is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. This great gift to Mary, an ordinary human being just like us, was fitting because she was destined to be Mother of God. She is a model of purity and holiness for all Christians. https://t.co/uYA0rNh3pe#EWTN#Catholic
A5. Like with all PD, I feel it's the mindset going into the PD that truly matters. Empathy isn't something that happens overnight. Plant the empathy seed and tend to your school/garden....all day-every day!
#satchat#KidsDeserveIt#BeTheOne#joyfulleaders
A5:I attended a PD hosted by Kellog Foundation @ Jefferson School African American Heritage. Here we talked about changing the narrative of history through storytelling (personal accounts) It was life changing and much needed with pop. I serve #satchat#satchat
A6: The jigsaw classroom technique was originally developed to reduce racial cliques in integrated schools in the 1950s. Teachers can use jigsaw classroom to foster a culture of empathy when students have to learn from each other to fully understand the topic. #satchat
Traveling helps us discover what others think about Americans, no? I remember a mom in New Zealand asking me if I carried "my gun" to the grocery store! 😱#satchat

A5: My true "Empathy Epiphany" was when I attended a PD session several years ago led by @caselorg on #socialemotionallearning. That shifted our school's focus on investing in an advisory program based on empathy. #satchat
I receive trainings now due to a position I have at my school as the Innovative Technology Lead Teacher. I now GIVE PD on technology. The hardest part is getting Ts to share what they want training in, so I can provide PD that is relevant for their needs. #satchat#edchateu
A5) If nothing else, Restorative Practices. This embeds empathy in dealing with issues. It also helps to teach students to focus on how their actions affect others versus breaking a rule. #satchat

Who does get to define the word and determine its usage? Its origins date far back to ancient times, possibly even Proto-Indo-European. I don't used tribe myself, typically preferring to use family or fam instead, but I'm truly curious. #satchat
The scenes were punctuated by shouts of “Macron Resign!” — a reference to President Emmanuel Macron, who has become a focus of anger — impromptu bursts of the French national anthem and curses spat at the police https://t.co/y1L3s1wFUS
Don’t make me have an ugly cry this early. I got stuff to do today. 🤣🤣🤣 yet... here I sit teary eyed by the tree, snuggled in cozy blankets, waiting for snow, feeling warm and fuzzy because of heart felt tweet from a stranger, yet dear friend. ❤️❤️❤️ #satchat
A5: PD idea: use @stanforddschool model for school redesign to have teachers re-imagine the school day for a colleague. You can’t just solve a problem for yourself. You must empathize with another to solve their problem with compassion & understanding. #satchat@MichaelJDunlea
A5: PD resources such as trauma informed teaching are really leading the way right now for our district. Understanding brain development with trauma has really helped us to really change our tune from sympathy to empathy. #SatChat
A4. Good morning, Community member Scott here. I believe it makes a difference if community members normally practice empathy. Then there's the policy piece and Principal's role - to encourage school atmosphere. #satchat
A5: It might not be very practical, but the best PD would be for teachers to visit different classrooms, different schools, experience differences, not sit in a room a listen to somebody lecture. Empathy starts with experiencing differences first hand.#satchat#empathy
Here's our final Question 6 remember to respond with A6. What one idea can you share to help educators spread empathy with students? Share your stories of success with creating cultures of empathy. #Satchat#SparkEmpathy#TheEmpathyProject@EmpaticoOrg@EvolvingEd

A6: Make kindness, acceptance, effective communication, caring and inclusivity the tenets of everything you do in class, kids learn by seeing and doing 😊 👍 #satchat
A6. It may sound so simple but we read all 5 Borrowers Books last year, I had S's choose their favorite character and write a journal as if they were that character. It was incredible to see them understand so much deeper the story. #Satchat#SparkEmpathy@EmpaticoOrg
I get texts from my teachers at all hours of the night because they’re so excited to be able to connect their students to other classes around the world! @EmpaticoOrg is giving us that opportunity! #Satchat#SparkEmpathy
Culture, of course-which is the point of the discussion. I don't use the word "niggardly" anymore, either, a perfectly "harmless" word.
Trust me, I know the etymology of "tribe"--did the same handstands you're doing now. I still use it within my clan. But not in a meme.
#satchat
A3: Everyone has different life experiences. The greater the difference, the greater the opportunity to learn about someone else but also about YOURself. Tremendous personal growth can come from realizing your way is not the only way. #satchat@sparkempathy#theempathyproject

As the former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson speaks candidly about the difficulties of working for an undisciplined President, Donald Trump turns to an experienced hand to lead the Justice Department: https://t.co/HJOAH1x6mA
A4: Currently working with a Grade 6 class reading #Refugee by @AlanGratz for #GRA2018. Story is such a powerful way to foster empathy in students. #satchat
A4 My curiosity about a PD experience is moving it into an intentional practice and as part of the foundation or condition for learning. Like a foreign language there needs to be lots of opportunity to practice in order for it to become an intentional part of the culture #satchat

A6: Don’t reinvent the wheel. Get in there and build those relationships with each and every student you encounter even if they aren’t your student. Create a sense of equity in your class bc it goes a very long way. #satchat
A5 shadow students who represent diverse demographics in your sch, interview children and listen empathetically about their experiences in sch environments, volunteer in a hospital, a shelter, become a CASA volunteer - read anything by @TishJennings research @caselorg#SatChat

I find myself treating Michael Cohen as a hero, even though he's just as big a lying, no-nothing attention-whore as the man I'm hoping he'll somehow help incriminate.
And that is neither logical, nor healthy.

A6- I would recommend starting a skype or pen pal system where the students in one class can connect or build a relationship with students in another area. This could be like a whole advisory time on a Friday afternoon with your students. #satchat
A6: Virtual exchange was the transformational practice for me in K12 and now in higher ed. When I can connect my students with others from around the world or even the next school over, they can begin to understand better how they fit in this story we are all writing. #satchat
A5 Likewise inclusive education PD e.g Universal Design, English as a Second Language in mainstream, provides educators with the opportunity of developing strategies in addressing equity in their classrooms & within the school community #satchat
A6: Tell your students you love them. Every day. Tell them they are perfect just the way they are. Every day. When you make a mistake, announce it to the class. Apologize. Tell your story. Help them talk through problems with active listening. If nothing else...love. #satchat

A4: Multicultural learning that includes texts/lessons highlighting individuals from backgrounds similar to those in the room, especially ones that show people overcoming adverse situations #satchat
This happened last week, and we're creating more of these whole-school bulletin boards next week! Building empathy and global connectedness is now a huge district goal for our elementary schools and our #EmpaticoDistrict#satchat
Hey @EmpaticoOrg! I spent today making this collaborative world map display for everyone at #wedgwoodelem to showcase ALL the 🌎 connections they’ll make this year! (I just need ideas for a title.) Then we replicate this in our other SIX SCHOOLS! #SparkEmpathy#EmpaticoDistrict
A6: Biggest empathy builder- taking time out to get to know each one of your Ss. Taking time for those individual conversations. Your other kids starting see this- adults who care so they want to care. Other biggest builder- BOOKS. So many YA books for connections. #SatChat
The super-rich usually splurge on yachts. Not this lot. Committed environmentalists, they buy up spectacular land and turn it into national parks https://t.co/h4aCIuaPrD
Thanks #satchat#PLN for being here and sharing your thoughts and resources on building empathy in kids, powerful conversation! Have a wonderful day! Thanks @MichaelJDunlea and the whole #satchat crew!
A4: Spreading messages of kindness and hope by writing postcards to refugees, Indigenous and Jewish communities. Understanding what it means to put ourselves in the "shoes" of another. #satchat
A6: Simple: Make empathy your true north. A culture. Invest the time and energy to do that in your classroom and school and everything else will follow. It may be hard and may be uncomfortable, but it's well worth it. #satchat
If you are from northern or central NJ, join #NJASCDNorth at our #SEL workshop in January. We welcome @agratitudegirl for a keynote followed by breakout sessions on mindfulness, anxiety, growth mindset, brain breaks, & the whole child! #satchat#njascd#njpsa#njed
#satchat A6: Initially, learners need to see that the edu has empathy FOR them. Create a safe space for all of the learning community. Start there, and then venture out in baby steps, if need be. An inspiring & relevant article for the target group, guest speaker, etc.
A6: Explicitly and overtly teach the skill of empathy. Point it out and talk about it with Ss. Practice the habits of empathy with Ss. Embed them into your classroom culture. #satchat@micheleborba#ToolkitTalk
You have no idea how much that means to me! I truly do feel the emotions of others and on top of my own it can be overwhelming... but I wouldn’t change a thing! #satchat
I connected w/ a T in Bangladesh and afterwards my S’s asked “Was that her whole house?” It was such an amazing moment because it showed they learned to ask Q’s that may offend afterwards. We learned so much from that I exchange I use the #teachSDGs#satchat
A6: Create a safe space, so students can have a voice, listen, have them listen, create critical thinkers, take same time of from leacturing, give more voice t students. #satchat#empathy
For many of my kids they don’t need a simulation ... they are living it and they don’t need me telling them how much poverty sucks ... they know #satchat
I get texts from my teachers at all hours of the night because they’re so excited to be able to connect their students to other classes around the world! @EmpaticoOrg is giving us that opportunity! #Satchat#SparkEmpathy
Yes, I don't think a teacher can understand the power of this until they've experienced it with their students. I can't fully describe all the ways students benefit from this :). @EmpaticoOrg@TeachSDGs#satchat
A6: Virtual exchange was the transformational practice for me in K12 and now in higher ed. When I can connect my students with others from around the world or even the next school over, they can begin to understand better how they fit in this story we are all writing. #satchat
Which culture or group defines it, though? Who decides who can and cannot use a word? Like I said, I don't use it, but I know many from different backgrounds who do, so I'm trying to understand why it shouldn't be used. #satchat
A6: Books. Books. Books. Diverse books for your student. Diverse books for your staff. Diverse books for you. Diverse books for your family. Diverse books for your fiends. Even mail diverse books anonymously to the haters. :) #Satchat

Tell them in all the languages, words, acts, body language, faces. A wink goes a long way. When silent reading and I look up and we make eye contact I wink and smile and they light up. They just want adults to see & value them #satchat
A6 I would recommend practice and practice solving the human conflict challenges as well as continue to build relationships centered on student passions and interests. #satchat
A4. While the socializing task of a school does not lie in replicating cultural dominance and/or social inequalities in the broader community, in general, schools are mini-societies that can provide a snapshot of how ‘certain’ adults think about the world. #satchat
The birds will be trapped and transported about 375 miles from Cádiz, Spain. The hope is that the highly adaptable rock pigeons will be happy to resettle there rather than be tempted to make the return flight. https://t.co/lRzCZq6vCx

A6 Every interaction is an opportunity to create trust, connection, sense of caring. When wrapped around Wellbeing it’s a way of getting to how every individual experiences life and the impact on performance and achievement #satchat
A6 Idea: Form committees at school to collaborate on empathy-related topics and action plans. Connect with other teachers and administrators in-real-life, as well as online, regarding empathy-related initiatives. Successes show over time. Alums returning to share impact. #satchat

THIS is one of the most powerful discussions we've been having in our district as we use @EmpaticoOrg to #SparkEmpathy. How has your perspective changed? #satchat
I can’t believe it’s almost over already! What an amazing chat. I seriously need to reread this whole thing for several hours. It’s a buffet and I need a To Go container please. #satchat#sparkempathy@EmpaticoOrg
Angela Merkel can celebrate as her handpicked deputy Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer wins the race to succeed her at the helm of the Christian Democratic Union

A6:I found making connections w/Ss and families goes along way. Invite parents in to share books, personal experiences, cultural dishes, or have Ss share as part of project. The more others learn the more they embrace. Also, as their lead learner I share lots... #satchat
Let's have empathy with our struggling readers – important research says that reading challenges have a significant #sel impact: https://t.co/hdlkfeyjGn
Let us also increase our focus on excellent reading instruction in those essential early grades.
#satchat
A6: I recommend establishing a penpal/language exchange to build empathy. I have participated in language exchange myself with 5 of the 7 languages that I have studied; I have learned a lot aside from the language but have yet to try it w/ my Ss. #satchat

What?! Lunch is a great time to do this. At our school we have to eat lunch with them the 1st week as a way to set expectations, then we eat with them every Friday. It started with 1 who wanted us, but now other Ss are begging for us to sit with them too. #sparkempathy#satchat
A6: Provide authentic opportunities to spark and inspire! Collaborate with your teacher-librarian if possible. Connect with others thru programs like @EmpaticoOrg and @globalreadaloud. #satchat
Imagine if we can teach our youngsters these lessons about respectfully disagreeing, AND repeat them throughout the years so that these lessons stay with them through life....what a better place our future will be! #satchat#SparkEmpathy

So so true they are contextualised & localised & children bring their thinking about the world that comes from their homes - values, beliefs and ways of being - and so do educators #satchat
