Welcome to #sdedchat! Please introduce yourself: name, location, and role in education. Feel free to add your Bitmoji/GIF showing how excited you are to join us tonight!
A1: I went to a small town Junior High about 15ish years ago and I think a big difference to me is that now there are teams of teachers advocating for & building relationships with learners #sdedchat
Technology is so different today. Teachers can use it to to present material in a variety of ways, but students also have access to limitless resources outside the classroom as well. #sdedchat
A1 The presence of technology has definitely been the biggest change. So many more creative learning opportunities for kids in today’s educational environment. #sdedchat
A2: I would tell myself at 13 to never let anyone else determine your future and to choose your own path. Don’t put so much weight into what others say and do. #sdedchat

A3: Middle school is exciting bc it's one of the final opportunities to make an impact on a Ss life. I love that I get to make those lasting connections, and shape who they will become. #sdedchat
A3: What I like most about teaching middle school is the personal growth I have had. There isn't a day that doesn't go by that I don't learn from a student, or learn my curriculum better. And there is never a dull moment!
#sdedchat
A3: Middle school is special because the kids are going through so many changes & so much growth. They are still kids but also developing sarcasm & responsibility #sdedchat
A3: MS Ss are still adventurous to try new things and beginning to really apply concepts. You have to teach the whole Ss because they are figuring out themselves as a person. #sdedchat
A3: Teaching middle school, I feel like I am able to make much more of an impact on how my students view themselves and their potential to make the world a better place. #sdedchat
A3b: I love teaching middle school because we can laugh & make jokes and also have serious conversations about life. Middle Schoolers are so compassionate and creative. #sdedchat
#sdedchat I love middle schoolers because they so different. They're so resilient, and most still love to learn. I'm pretty much a middle schooler at heart.

We work towards preparing standards, getting materials that will help with getting them ready for a world that isn't invented yet! Plus, I see social skills as huge! #sdedchat
A4: I appreciate that WMS has advisory. It is great to be able to get to know a group of students and to help them through the year and their future by teaching them social skills. #sdedchat

A4: We have advisory, band & choir, PE every day for every kid, choices for Encore courses, interventions, and teaming. We also have staff who understand & care about each individual in our building #sdedchat
A4: At SMS we have advisory time where we learn about everything from social skills to Spread the Word to End the Word. We also connect with our kids on what they need. #sdedchat
A4--We do caring projects, social skills, Top 20 lessons, volunteer work, and many other things. Our staff truly cares for kids; that goes a long way.
#sdedchat
A5: Outstanding middle level educators should be able to live in the moment with their students. They know their content matter, and they know their students. #sdedchat
A4: Our students are required to participate in community service as part of the curriculum. We also do quite a few social projects to benefit others. That way our students can see more of the "big" picture. #sdedchat
A5: Outstanding middle level educators should bring a sense of change in every aspect of the day. Whether it is with teaching the content, dealing with students, or handling the ever changing world. We have to be ready to adapt and be on top of change.
#sdedchat
A5: I also think it is super helpful to have a sense of humor and be willing to make fun of oneself. #nobodyisperfect and it is important to teach our students that we can learn together. #sdedchat
A5: Great teachers truly need to be able to build relationships with their students. Find common ground with them, be weird, laugh with them, respect them as real people, but understand that they are still children. #sdedchat
A6: Each subject matter has the ability to be creative, collaborative, etc. It's exciting to see these things being done at a team level though for true collaboration. #sdedchat
A5: Adaptability and understanding. Kids need to know that they are expected to complete all the material, but sometimes situations arise and we need to be flexible. #sdedchat
It's something I think we could improve on. I've started an Innovation class. In other classes, working on developing those skills through world based problems, like the water crisis in Cape Town. #sdedchat
A3 The Middle School years are so many different things to kids...growth, maturity, freedom, awkwardness. I love the positive impact you can make on students as they transition to young adults. #sdedchat
A4 Provide Social Skills lessons and service project opportunities to show them the importance of being a decent human being and the importance of helping others in need. #sdedchat
A6: We have a FLEX time where teachers can do interventions and enrichments. During that time we also offer fun courses on variety of topics (knitting, slackline, reading, etc) #sdedchat
Q6: SMS has teaming for our staff to plan what’s best for our kids and how to integrate subjects. We have a fantastic makerspace led by @mrstbauerly@monkeywau and @johndagit that is incredible for creativity and critical thinking! #sdedchat
A7: My advice for parents...your child is not your friend. Part of growing up is knowing who to respect and how to act. Relationships are important, but the way you foster them is also important. #sdedchat

A6: I think it is really important that our Ss see Ts demonstrating the qualities of creativity, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking. We need to be models of these skills, which is sometimes hard for teachers. #sdedchat
A7: I would tell parents to talk to their child about their day without the use of technology playing any role. Listening to them. Hearing their ideas, concerns, or theirs up/downs.
#sdedchat#bringbackFamilytime
I would say find a way to enjoy the moments and help them see the joy in the moments. So much seems make or break in adolescence. Parents can provide perspective and build a relationship at the same time.
#sdedchat
Hey #sdedchat if we can be of any help in giving your learners voice and choice let us know. We have a scheduling software that can be customized to your needs!
A7: I would ask my parents to limit, or at least strictly supervise, social media. Help your child to build social skills, help them be respectful, and be present in their lives. #sdedchat
Q8 In what ways, does your school provide experiences for students with special talents or interests in intellectual, athletic, or artistic endeavors? #sdedchat
A7 Be honest and open with your child so they can feel comfortable talking to you about all the tough topics that come with being an adolescent. #sdedchat
I agree. We live in a world that many of our Ss parents don't understand the use of these tools, but they need too in order to protect their kiddos. :-( #sdedchat

A8 at the elementary level in our personalized learning we do learner interest groups. We bring in experts to share with our learners! All driven by our learners interest. #sdedchat
A8: WMS has so many clubs and activities for students to join. There is something for every personality type and interest. Such a great way for middle schoolers to find friends with similar interests. #sdedchat
So sorry I couldn't join #sdedchat tonight. #DiggerTrackandField practice let out late & the fam needed fed. (That's probably thr biggest deal: #hangry!) Have a good chat everyone!

A8: I work with a great group of educators who love to empower kids. We have a wide range of clubs and activities. @singerinHills is leading an archery club this winter because Ss are passionate about it! #sdedchat
A8: We have so many clubs and activities. Teachers find a passion and are there for students. I think our Encore programs are a big part of this, they let students shine & show creativity and try something new. #sdedchat
A8 HMS provides many after school clubs. I have enjoyed being an advisor to Kindness Club which we have also been using as our inclusion club joining with Special Olympics athletes. #sdedchat
There is something out there for everyone. Fine Arts, Athletics, Clubs or all of it. Sometimes students need positive peer pressure at that age to try something. Half the battle to get them to start & get them to understand its OK to participate. #sdedchat
A10: I've been looking into The Literacy Shed. They have great ideas for writers, and I think I could really use their animations for visual analysis with storytelling. #sdedchat
SMS conducted a kindness week that was driven by Ss. Quotes, posters, selfies, activities and conversation on how we can have a positive environment. #sdedchat
I think it's crucial for us to reward and recognize those that do things the right way. Focus on the positives yet correct the negative behaviors. #sdedchat

We like to participate in the "Wear Blue" to Stomp Out Bullying in October. We also have a character trait of the month that focuses on some of those "soft skills" kids need to have to be successful in life. #sdedchat
You can't teach students how to use technology appropriately and safely if you block it and ban it. There are so many powerful ways for us to learn, share, and change the world with technology. Let's start teaching that. #sdedchat
We also do an annual anonymous survey of students to get a better understanding of the climate of the school from the students' perspectives. #sdedchat
