  • JessicaMHenrion Mar 1 @ 9:07 PM EST
A1 - Well if I wasn't a part of #saskedchat I wouldn't be learning new things to try ! I learned from @Stella_Pollard about classcraft and was able to try it out during my internship!
  • kellywchris Mar 1 @ 9:07 PM EST
Welcome to #saskedchat @nikulak Aren’t you suppose to be in a class or something?
  • BKorchinski Mar 1 @ 9:08 PM EST
Hey awesome #saskedchat people!! Brooke, current 7-12 English Teacher and K-12 Student Support at Loreburn SK with @SunWestSD207
  • HeculuckDave Mar 1 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1. The growth in learning that has occurred with PLC's in my short career is incalculable ... from local school PLN to twitter PLC's (thanks @kellywchris for starting me in this format) it has benefitted so many Ss. PLC's are all about them and their learning. #saskedchat
  • JoeMcgurran Mar 1 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1: PLCs are teacher driven opportunities for PD. It is so very rewarding to be involved in a group of motivated peers who have all chosen to be there. #saskedchat #eci832
  • Stella_Pollard Mar 1 @ 9:09 PM EST
Awe! I'm so glad you enjoyed #classcraft! It's the best addiction. #saskedchat
    In reply to @JessicaMHenrion
  • PrincipalSmart - Moderator Mar 1 @ 9:10 PM EST
Hello #saskedchat Michelle from Estevan jumping in tonight. I have such a hard time staying awake on Thursdays but I am excited to be here.
  • Stella_Pollard Mar 1 @ 9:10 PM EST
A1. Education is not a one man thing. The more we talk and share, the more we are able to help our students grow! Learning goes beyond the four walls of our classroom. #saskedchat
  • PrincipalSmart - Moderator Mar 1 @ 9:11 PM EST
    A1 PLC's encourage continued growth. #saskedchat
  • tgrantt Mar 1 @ 9:11 PM EST
A1: 1. Support if you are isolated (ie. only Sr ELA T in a school) Or not. 2. To keep abreast of what's new, interesting, and of note. 3. For the emotional lift. (I don't come here for @kellywchris 's humour! :) 4. Because to teach learning, you must MODEL learning! #saskedchat
  • kellywchris Mar 1 @ 9:12 PM EST
Q2 - How can teachers continue to grow a mindset of collective inquiry within a PLC? #saskedchat
  • kellywchris Mar 1 @ 9:12 PM EST
Hey @PrincipalSmart @BKorchinski great to see you tonight for #saskedchat. We’re sure happy you are joining us.
  • tgrantt Mar 1 @ 9:12 PM EST
Yeah, @Stella_Pollard is awesome. Don't let her know I said that! #saskedchat
    In reply to @JessicaMHenrion, @Stella_Pollard, @Stella_Pollard
  • PrincipalSmart - Moderator Mar 1 @ 9:13 PM EST
Are you sure you don't mean a one "people" thing? Ha, ha. I am sorry, I couldn't resist. #saskedchat
    In reply to @Stella_Pollard
  • kellywchris Mar 1 @ 9:13 PM EST
What???? You’ve got to be kidding! #saskedchat
    In reply to @tgrantt
  • Stella_Pollard Mar 1 @ 9:14 PM EST
I am speechless. I have waited my whole life for this moment. #saskedchat
    In reply to @tgrantt, @JessicaMHenrion
  • heidi_paterson Mar 1 @ 9:14 PM EST
  • tgrantt Mar 1 @ 9:14 PM EST
That went through my head too. Like a bullet. #saskedchat
    In reply to @PrincipalSmart, @Stella_Pollard
  • heidi_paterson Mar 1 @ 9:14 PM EST
A1: To learn from each other. Learning is a social activity. #saskedchat
  • tgrantt Mar 1 @ 9:14 PM EST
You need to set higher goals.... #saskedchat
    In reply to @Stella_Pollard, @JessicaMHenrion
  • Stella_Pollard Mar 1 @ 9:15 PM EST
Now that's the kind of hospitiality I expect in #saskedchat
    In reply to @tgrantt, @JessicaMHenrion
  • tgrantt Mar 1 @ 9:15 PM EST
Yes it is! And people who want to isolate that make me gnash my teeth! #saskedchat
    In reply to @heidi_paterson
  • Stella_Pollard Mar 1 @ 9:15 PM EST
    hospitiality* darn. #saskedchat
    In reply to @tgrantt, @JessicaMHenrion
  • JoeMcgurran Mar 1 @ 9:16 PM EST
A2: That's a good question. I've seen some PLCs kind of whither or wane maybe. I think it might help if the PLC is not only being led entirely by one person, but several chipping in. What do you think? #saskedchat
  • HeculuckDave Mar 1 @ 9:16 PM EST
A2. For the Ss in my classroom it has been all about data and feedback as THEY drive my need, and my collaborating T's need, to learn as a teacher and impact their learning as Ss. Student success/need drives new PLC learning. #saskedchat
  • Stella_Pollard Mar 1 @ 9:16 PM EST
A2: Share/Input, receive feedback, give feedback, have an open mind, and share HONEST reflection. It's important. #saskedchat
  • heidi_paterson Mar 1 @ 9:17 PM EST
Sometimes that is a survival strategy. Sometimes there's little trust. Sometimes, you're the only science geek and you get tired of telling jokes no one else laughs at. #saskedchat
    In reply to @tgrantt
  • TheStephenKeys Mar 1 @ 9:17 PM EST
    Hey guys. Joining late. #saskedchat
  • heidi_paterson Mar 1 @ 9:17 PM EST
Agreed. We have so much to learn from our students. We need to listen. #saskedchat
    In reply to @HeculuckDave
  • kellywchris Mar 1 @ 9:19 PM EST
Q3. How do PLC's differ from other groups to which most teachers belong? #saskedchat
  • HeculuckDave Mar 1 @ 9:19 PM EST
A2. Knowing it isn't about me.... :) Unless we talk chocolate, wine, or IPA.... #saskedchat
  • tgrantt Mar 1 @ 9:19 PM EST
A2: Don't PLC just with people who think like you. Ever notice how @kellywchris will challenge/question people's ideas? That's how you make them think; they may not respond right then, but... Teaching=Gardening. (You plant seeds, and sometimes pull out weeds.) #saskedchat
  • LannySaretsky Mar 1 @ 9:20 PM EST
I agree if learning is a team effort PLCs fall into that category #saskedchat
    In reply to @JoeMcgurran
  • Stella_Pollard Mar 1 @ 9:20 PM EST
A3: Personalized, focused, small, and really just a place for us to throw around ideas and see what we can come up with. #saskedchat
  • kellywchris Mar 1 @ 9:21 PM EST
Welcome to #saskedchat @jeffpcarpenter @heidi_paterson @TheStephenKeys Great to have you join us tonight!
  • kellywchris Mar 1 @ 9:22 PM EST
I think someone just gave me a compliment but I’m not exactly sure! #saskedchat
    In reply to @tgrantt
  • tgrantt Mar 1 @ 9:22 PM EST
(Once more, with hashtag!) Diversity and multiplicity is always better. #saskedchat
    In reply to @JoeMcgurran
  • LannySaretsky Mar 1 @ 9:22 PM EST
Sometimes when we get questioned on things it can help us to see things in a different light or gain a better understanding of what we are doing/believe in #saskedchat
    In reply to @tgrantt, @kellywchris
  • PrincipalSmart - Moderator Mar 1 @ 9:22 PM EST
A3 PLC"s tend to be like groups. You find your peeps. Other groups work well but are not always focused on the growth in the same way. #saskedchat
  • JoeMcgurran Mar 1 @ 9:22 PM EST
A3: I've found my experiences in PLCs to be very responsive to the needs of the members. The agenda is being set by those who hope to get the most out of the experience, if that makes sense. #saskedchat
  • HeculuckDave Mar 1 @ 9:23 PM EST
A3. We WILL empathize, sympathize, listen, advise, coach, support, uplift, and truly validate what we are doing for our Ss. No other level of collaboration does this... we can work together but places like #saskedchat are meant for more than just learning all-things-teaching.
  • kellywchris Mar 1 @ 9:23 PM EST
So, is #saskedchat a PLC of some sort? If not, what would you call it?
  • tgrantt Mar 1 @ 9:23 PM EST
A3: They have no hierarchy!!! #saskedchat
  • tgrantt Mar 1 @ 9:24 PM EST
If you are a fan of those super-hoppy American IPAs I'm not sure we can be friends! #saskedchat
    In reply to @HeculuckDave
  • Stella_Pollard Mar 1 @ 9:24 PM EST
#saskedchat is where my homies live.
    In reply to @kellywchris
  • PrincipalSmart - Moderator Mar 1 @ 9:25 PM EST
I think it would be. PLC's come in different forms and different organizations. #saskedchat
    In reply to @kellywchris
  • tgrantt Mar 1 @ 9:25 PM EST
Think about it. #saskedchat (See what I did there? )
    In reply to @kellywchris
  • kellywchris Mar 1 @ 9:26 PM EST
Q4. How can teachers ensure that a PLC continues to grow, innovate, and experiment over time? #saskedchat
  • heidi_paterson Mar 1 @ 9:26 PM EST
A3: I haven't had great experiences. Things seem to fizzle out over the long-term b/c there isn't frequent enough short-term commitments. #saskedchat
  • tgrantt Mar 1 @ 9:27 PM EST
True. But in all situations, get what you can for you. Sometimes it really IS about you! #saskedchat
    In reply to @PrincipalSmart
  • BKorchinski Mar 1 @ 9:28 PM EST
I guess that would depend on the definition of PLC. As a professional learning community, I feel #saskedchat fits that description quite perfectly. Even more perfect because we are not restricted by time and location
    In reply to @kellywchris
  • Stella_Pollard Mar 1 @ 9:28 PM EST
A4: Keeping it positive, always have something to share, and do not be judgemental. Realize that we all need to pull our weight. #saskedchat
  • kellywchris Mar 1 @ 9:28 PM EST
Yet, #saskedchat has been around for over 6 years I think and it seems to continue to be diverse and grow. What is the difference?
    In reply to @heidi_paterson
  • PrincipalSmart - Moderator Mar 1 @ 9:28 PM EST
Agreed! It is all about the mindset! #saskedchat
    In reply to @tgrantt
  • beth_thomson Mar 1 @ 9:28 PM EST
A4 being present in the classroom and meeting with teachers #saskedchat
  • Stella_Pollard Mar 1 @ 9:28 PM EST
    Because I joined. :) #saskedchat
    In reply to @kellywchris, @heidi_paterson
  • LannySaretsky Mar 1 @ 9:29 PM EST
A4 Keep searching for different topics to try; different ways to communicate (Flipgrid, Periscope in chats) and hey if things flop a bit from time to time no big deal #saskedchat
  • kfidelack Mar 1 @ 9:29 PM EST
Hey #saskedchat! Jumping in late; our bowling league finished early tonight. Happy to spend some time with all of you!
  • kellywchris Mar 1 @ 9:30 PM EST
Yet we are not all working with the same students or within the same mission and vision which are usually part of a PLC in the traditional sense. #saskedchat
    In reply to @BKorchinski
  • heidi_paterson Mar 1 @ 9:30 PM EST
Great people, interesting topics, but different than how I need to grow and what I need to grow in. #saskedchat
    In reply to @kellywchris
  • kfidelack Mar 1 @ 9:31 PM EST
A4: Making sure the needs of the PLC continue to be met so it doesn't become dry or a "chore." Keeping those in the PLC engaged and interested in the work they are doing. We tried a PLC group this year and it wasn't the best fit, so fizzled out #saskedchat
  • kellywchris Mar 1 @ 9:32 PM EST
Welcome to #saskedchat @stangea @lindseyanneeee @kfidelack - great to have you with us tonight!
  • tgrantt Mar 1 @ 9:32 PM EST
Of course it is! As @PrincipalSmart said, we might not be for everyone & that's okay but I, at least, learn here, feel supported here, & feel free 2 both speak up & listen, knowing that I may be wrong but not judged, & that I don't have to agree w/others just 2 belong #saskedchat
    In reply to @kellywchris, @PrincipalSmart
  • kellywchris Mar 1 @ 9:33 PM EST
Q5. How do teachers ensure they continue to work towards continuous improvement within a PLC? #saskedchat
  • BKorchinski Mar 1 @ 9:33 PM EST
I think this makes it even better, because we do not know the specifics yet are willing to support each other and provide suggestions. #saskedchat
  • kellywchris Mar 1 @ 9:33 PM EST
So then is it a PLC or is it something else or could it be both depending on a person’s needs? #saskedchat
    In reply to @heidi_paterson
  • arzyna Mar 1 @ 9:33 PM EST
Greetings y’all. Principal, large PreK-8 suburban school outside Regina. Checking in late... how’s the power to the PLC convo?! #saskedchat
  • Stella_Pollard Mar 1 @ 9:33 PM EST
A5: Set goals and make sure to make room for reflection.. I would recommend blogging, journaling, or podcasting! #saskedchat
  • kellywchris Mar 1 @ 9:34 PM EST
Welcome to #saskedchat @arzyna good to see you made it back from down south!
  • HeculuckDave Mar 1 @ 9:34 PM EST
https://t.co/yv9ZFaZKRn help to accomplish this in telling us what they need. T's invested in their learning with their PLC benefit Ss. This topic tonight is a great example as it is the first I've seen it and been asked to think this way about PLC! Great job! #saskedchat
  • kfidelack Mar 1 @ 9:34 PM EST
A5: Make commitments to do small steps or changes, which you can then share when you meet next. #saskedchat
  • PrincipalSmart - Moderator Mar 1 @ 9:35 PM EST
A5 You get what you put in. We have to make time for goal setting and reflection. #saskedchat
  • JoeMcgurran Mar 1 @ 9:35 PM EST
A5: It always feels good when we have results to report back to our PLC with. We all tried something and talk about how it went. #saskedchat
  • heidi_paterson Mar 1 @ 9:36 PM EST
Either, or. The second letter, L = learning, is the clincher. How do we provide opportunities for all in a PLC to learn to their potential and are being challenged? #saskedchat
    In reply to @kellywchris
  • HeculuckDave Mar 1 @ 9:36 PM EST
A5. Forever questioning your impact on student learning and then acting tomorrow on the need you found today. Acting on it should include asking your PLC for their advice/best practice ideas! #saskedchat
  • kfidelack Mar 1 @ 9:37 PM EST
    #saskedchat
    • tgrantt Mar 1 @ 9:36 PM EST
A4: 1/2 We can't. They're too organic. While every fall Ss are "forced" into our classes, & we are "forced" into work relationships. A good PLC must be natural, changing, and adaptive. But at some point, like any organic thing, it may come to an end. It may be weeks or decades...
  • heidi_paterson Mar 1 @ 9:37 PM EST
I enjoy it immensely. It's refreshing to talk about teaching/learning rather than the negative things. #saskedchat
    In reply to @tgrantt, @kellywchris, @PrincipalSmart
  • arzyna Mar 1 @ 9:37 PM EST
It was touch and go for a bit! Texas knows how to woo a girl lol But look at my champion! #saskedchat
    In reply to @kellywchris
  • kellywchris Mar 1 @ 9:38 PM EST
I always wonder how people see #saskedchat - sometimes I wonder if there is value in these weekly chats and how we can expand to invite more teachers to take part.
  • tgrantt Mar 1 @ 9:38 PM EST
A4: 1/2 We can't. They're 2 organic. While every fall Ss r "forced" into our classes, & we r "forced" into work relationships a good PLC must be natural, changing, & adaptive. But at some point like any organic thing it may come 2 an end. It may be weeks or decades... #saskedchat
  • kellywchris Mar 1 @ 9:39 PM EST
Yeah, I was wondering if you’d be drawn to that southern living and warm weather! Great pic! Great to have you back with us! #saskedchat
    In reply to @arzyna
  • kellywchris Mar 1 @ 9:40 PM EST
Q6. How do teachers within a PLC continue to work towards results over time? #saskedchat
  • bircherd - Moderator Mar 1 @ 9:41 PM EST
A5 with PLCs Ts get out what they put in. One must continually reflect, analyze data and want to improve their practice to improve student learning #saskedchat
  • Stella_Pollard Mar 1 @ 9:41 PM EST
A6: When you are in a PLC, you have more people to talk to and reflect with. Share results and gather what needs to be retaught. #saskedchat
  • JoeMcgurran Mar 1 @ 9:41 PM EST
Being relatively new to #saskedchat , I can certainly say I see value in the practice for myself. For one, putting me in touch with some professional contacts I wouldn't have otherwise known existed!
    In reply to @kellywchris
  • tgrantt Mar 1 @ 9:41 PM EST
A4: 2/2 We can foster, longevity, however, by having open and honest discussion, goals if necessary, and being responsive to the needs, interests, and strengths of the members (Take #saskedchat for example, I'm not a good organizer or planner, but I can extemporize like an SOB)
  • kfidelack Mar 1 @ 9:42 PM EST
A6: Take time to reflect on if you are truly working towards your original, intended purpose/goal. Sometimes we lose sight of what we are trying to do. Refocus and start the learning cycle again! #saskedchat
  • heidi_paterson Mar 1 @ 9:42 PM EST
There is definitely value. If not, I wouldn't keep coming back. #saskedchat
    In reply to @kellywchris
  • kellywchris Mar 1 @ 9:43 PM EST
Hey @bircherd great to have you join us tonight! Welcome to #saskedchat!
  • Stella_Pollard Mar 1 @ 9:43 PM EST
Alright #saskedchat I'm going to have to sneak out early. I'm exhausted! I'll see you all next Thursday
  • HeculuckDave Mar 1 @ 9:43 PM EST
A6. Ask more questions... ask students and check their learning.. then ask more questions and bring them here. Then start over. Keep it going. :) easy peasy #saskedchat
  • heidi_paterson Mar 1 @ 9:43 PM EST
A lovely glass of orange juice to be exact. #saskedchat
    In reply to @tgrantt, @Stella_Pollard, @kellywchris

A5: Listen to feedback. If needed, make a plan. #saskedchat
  • kellywchris Mar 1 @ 9:44 PM EST
Q7. What are the characteristics of effective PLCs to which you have belonged? #saskedchat
  • Stella_Pollard Mar 1 @ 9:44 PM EST
    ME? Never. #saskedchat
    In reply to @tgrantt, @kellywchris, @heidi_paterson

A1. Teachers who are part of a professional learning community recognize their common goal of achieving a collective purpose of learning for all. It enables then to improve their classroom practice & enhance student achievement #saskedchat
    In reply to @kellywchris
  • arzyna Mar 1 @ 9:46 PM EST
Education can be so isolating. Collegial connection is a life line. Diversifying our online PLNs strengthens us! That includes non- educators...would love to see some of those stakeholders join us. #saskedchat
    In reply to @kellywchris
  • PrincipalSmart - Moderator Mar 1 @ 9:47 PM EST
A7 It had a learning focus that I chose, my ideas were challenged, we had specific goals and came back to them often and we shared ideas. #saskedchat
  • kellywchris Mar 1 @ 9:48 PM EST
We’ve been trying - just like trying to get other teachers involved in #saskedchat - it’s a slowly evolving process!
    In reply to @arzyna
  • JoeMcgurran Mar 1 @ 9:48 PM EST
A7: A PLC I was part of at my previous school felt its strongest when the entire body was energized on a topic/need, as opposed to a leader trying to fish for common ground. #saskedchat
  • bircherd - Moderator Mar 1 @ 9:48 PM EST
A7 Attentive, responsive, supportive, punctual, collaborative. Just an enjoyable/comfortable group to be with. #saskedchat
  • HeculuckDave Mar 1 @ 9:48 PM EST
A7. One answer.... student driven. Giving Ss feedback and assessing their response to feedback should provide us with understanding of our impact which should then drive our learning in our PLC's. Effective PLCs question continuously. #saskedchat
  • bircherd - Moderator Mar 1 @ 9:50 PM EST
A7 2/2 ...and postive. Negative “nilleys” go away! #saskedchat
  • kellywchris Mar 1 @ 9:51 PM EST
@jeffpcarpenter @spgreenhalgh if you were to check out #saskedchat now, you might see why there is a whole lot of discussion which is part of the sharing that is done between people in the chat - maybe not links but definitely a great deal of sharing.
  • kellywchris Mar 1 @ 9:52 PM EST
TA - How can we use the PLC idea within the work we do with students? #saskedchat
  • tgrantt Mar 1 @ 9:52 PM EST
Hey, I wonder about me. Do I add entertainment & interest, or am I just annoying & loud? I'm sure that there r some that feel each way & that's fine. The point is 2 get what you need, from the people that appeal 2 u, & ignore the chaff, regardless of how u define that #saskedchat
    In reply to @kellywchris
  • heidi_paterson Mar 1 @ 9:52 PM EST
That synergy is so revitalizing. #saskedchat
    In reply to @JoeMcgurran
  • tgrantt Mar 1 @ 9:53 PM EST
A7: People who are interested and engaged. Funny how they are just like my favourite students! #saskedchat
  • arzyna Mar 1 @ 9:53 PM EST
Amen!! Leaders can not be the drivers of effective PLCs. Our role is to create AND protect the contexts within which they can germinate and grow. #saskedchat
    In reply to @JoeMcgurran

I consider you to be an integral part of the #saskedchat conversation, with part interesting comment, deep wisdom and annoying sarcasm all rolled into one

TA The most motivating things for me when it comes to learning is challenge and choice. I try to keep that in mind for my students as well. What motivates them. #saskedchat

And on any given night, who know which one is predominant! It's always a surprise to me! Seriously, thanks! #saskedchat

TA: Allow opportunities for students to take charge of their learning and develop in an area of their choice. This could be a personal goal, Genius Hour, Inquiry project, etc. As Ts, we want to improve, and Ss should be given the chance to do the same. #saskedchat

Each week I look forward to #saskedchat and seeing who will be here, hoping to see a mix of familiar and new faces knowing that no matter the topic, I will learn something and be challenged by someone to think differently coming away better than when I arrived.

TA. Had a great experience today with @jacquiewilson99 team teaching character traits, inferring within the text, and how to work with a partner to listen and convey what we learn about these ideas from each other as a team. Great stuff... love Kagan. #saskedchat
