supporting student needs begins with being open to the possibility that you don't know how to help them. Ask "how can I help?"

Much of what it takes to be an edu isn't learned in a clssrm. What specifically have you learned abt edu beyond college prep? Now on
I wish more prep schools would focus more on how to create community in class
I don't think using Social media for collaboration was taught in many teacher programs.
Lesson i didn’t learn in teacher ed program -> schools and classrooms are petri dishes for viruses, so be prepared to get sick.
KEY lesson: Either push students into educational holes they will never fit, or create holes that do fit them.
be the lead learner in your class. Curiosity + wonder are infectious.
The idea of student voice was never mentioned in teacher prep classes.
Are you an emotionally exhausted teacher? You might be negatively impacting student learning https://t.co/sAMN4vw79c
Howard Pitler joining a little late from Denver.
that's an understatement if there ever was one...
What teacher prep classes? We mention it all the time.
Power Point was the focus of tech in edu for many teacher prep classes.
Teacher prep programs rarely teach about self-care…impossible to care for others if you don’r care for yourself.
wouldn't that be wonderful! Good point ->

But social media wasnt a relevant option until 10 years ago I still remember when FB first came out when I was in college
100% agree! https://t.co/kQbtry7azo

Precisely, we need structures that allow for flexibility/growth/exploration within those parameters.

A message for teachers new and old. How much does that contribute to teacher burn out? https://t.co/bp465uGtan

Teachers' college prep classes span generations if we refer to the entire workforce. Much of their preparation is now outdated.
things that more Ts don't realize until they've been around the block for 5+ years
STRIVE to bring a gentle heart and playful soul to the lives of students.
Love this positivity! RT You never know what adventures around the next turn. Take a leap and enjoy the ride!
My prep classes did not empathize the importance of PLCs and their benefits. Ts helping Ts is critical to being a successful T
The heart of my ed program rings true: it's a job all about serving others. That's the foundation https://t.co/N8DSm1ukwr

The amount of paper work and best ways to organize is never taught in college
Thanks Jessica... Please meet Peter
Just last semester we explored in teaching K-8 math. Outdated? https://t.co/QU01uP81qG

Matt from NYC here. Everything I learned about Ed was I the field - trial & error or watching other great Ts
The importance of the organization itself to facilitate learning: leadership, collaboration, performance mgmt, communication, etc
they system isn't designed (in its current state) to take care of Ts. It's meant 4 standardized tests
If colleges aren't staying relevant & flexible in their teacher prep classes, what is our hope for a relevant education system?
FACT: 80% of MI charter schools are run by for-profit operators.70% of MI charter students are low-income.
Yes...there's lots of paper work. Often, form hell!
I believe children will do well if they can. For the children who cannot do well, like it or not, we are their early warning system.
Isn't it odd that we need to learn to be kind to ourselves. That balance doesn't always come naturally
My prep program was silent on things like parent conferences, dealing with colleagues, and ways to engage ALL students. Affective
so true. I started excelling as a T when I started ignoring a lot of the BS of the job
Do we resist or do we resist the that often comes with change?

Not the case at U of Mich SOE Master of Arts with Certification. Technology was forefront (2006).
School choice alone does not deliver the high quality education options kids deserve. We need quality control!
The program was strong and teaching me to teach the way my Ts learned. We learned ABOUT differentiation but now HOW to do it.
The school culture that supports that is a good fit for teachers
This is so true....Classroom management was very T centered...no talk of relationship building. https://t.co/RlKL2i9mHv
The idea of student voice was never mentioned in teacher prep classes.
Most powerful professional learning text that drove my practice/corroborated my teaching moves: TLAC by
I think a majority of teachers learned about PBL on the job and little about it in teacher prep programs.
All students need to think about their career goals - this will help guide their coursework
Tom, who is posting Qs this morning?
I did have an instruc. tech class in college but it was how to splice a 16mm film and mount slides. That was in 1973 though. :-)
Anyone in the chat. It's an open forum.
potential Ts should be aware of their program's incorporation or lack of technology into their educational degree
Mine was how to program an Apple IIe....very basic....
T6 I wish college taught how to flip classes. Makes ss active vs passive learners
Thanks...I assume topic is Teacher prep by Universities?
"Choice" alone does not deliver the high-performing school options kids deserve. We need quality control!
I have asked some of our new Ts how much tech integration they learned...most responses were zero.
monolithic is dated, doesn't fit new . My reporting job didn't exist in high school
my BA course was to make website in html. ss making website by self & so much easier now!
Relationship building in the classroom is something I have had to learn along the way. I was very introverted (still am).
Not perfect programs, but and prepare Ts more effectively than most colleges
The way I learned relationship building was understanding how to meet kids where they are.
totally agree. Highly visual content makes learning a lot more easy for students
Without collaboration how do educators expect to stay relevant with what they need to know about their own profession?
T6 How to dig through all the great resources and narrowing them down to what works for you

It is excellent. It explains in words one of the basic principles of HLM—building on a child's own passion https://t.co/L5Vr3cLQFZ
I differentiated before I knew what that meant or before it was "cool" :-) Meeting Ss where they are caused authentic relationships.

if educators can't collab, then can't expect Ss to collab, biggest item we need all Ss to do, communicate and collaborate
Correct. The biggest lesson was learning what I needed to control and what I could allow the Ss to control.
teacher prep should look a lot like twitter, collaborating, communicating, sharing ideas, learning, does it look this way now?
can be used as a great tool, people read more when they read on mobile devices
I think there are still edus who don't understand collaboration...they just see it as a "meeting."
Agreed! We would never accept treatment from a physician who didn't keep up on the latest procedures! Growth mindset 👍🏽
Until they understand the powerful growth that can occur with true collaboration, it will remain just a "meeting."
That is my experience as well.
I wish my school had made that an option in our computer classes in elementary school!
and especially twitter promote global collaboration between teachers for effective lifelong learning
make educators act like Ss then we would see the power of collaboration, connect to what we need Ss to do
Leaders need to model what collaboration looks like for Ts; Ts need to model for Ss.
Looking solely at the output of many colleges I don't see much change in the past few decades in too many.
Great question! https://t.co/4uZpqhqTcI
Without collaboration how do educators expect to stay relevant with what they need to know about their own profession?
You can't be successful in today's educational environment without collaboration, period.
RT LucianeCurator and especially twitter promote global collaboration between teachers for effective lifelong learning
. Shifts are happening - moving schools made a 180 in the positive for me. You only control you. https://t.co/4HuogF4nIl
teacher prep should look a lot like twitter, collaborating, communicating, sharing ideas, learning, does it look this way now?
w/o that model it becomes pockets of success, not whole school change, drive T thinking, drives Ss thinking
Study shows that mobile reading represents a promising, if still underutilized, pathway to text. Agree?
It may be that some Ts to "get" collaboration may need to model for leaders...to model for Ts...to model for Ss.
. is co-editing a special issue of Educational Researcher on evidence-informed practice in ed https://t.co/cTu4OUb3LQ
For my kids it wasn't an option, it was an expectation. It was one for the Ts as well. All Ts coded their own class page.
yes they do... but are teachers-to-be clued into this...
Subtle teacher cues are inhibiting math learning opportunities for Latino students, research finds https://t.co/I39XNeLJKi
Good pt: Just as we need 2 est. roles for Ss in collab. grps - we need 2 do the same 4 professional teams
Collaboration requires a two-way communication with more than one persons ideas. Without that it is more of a mandate.
So many that it's overwhelming to begin your search & find what's appropriate for your ss
agreed, only can control you, choice is huge and shows who can continue to grow, Ss need that choice too
In my experience one should find the correct level to connect with SS and then empower them to rise in perception and comprehension.
I don't think I would choose a doctor or lawyer who didn't collaborate with peers and learn from them.
Yes - and if you can't find it in your own building...you CAN find it in social media!
like Charlie Brown teacher, if we don't include all voices in collab it ends up bringing dissent to schools and learning
is stepping back from your to meet your jet unknown common .
That is a great Q Mark. Another Q would be how many Univ Profs are on Twitter to SHOW students?
Thanks for signing up to exhibit at !
def aggressive but what an amazing learning experience they had! So jealous of your ss

This really resonated with me. Speaking skills are SO important and yet are rarely explicitly taught https://t.co/twGDUhCZ1j
well Faige Jessica -> is my fave edu-writer!!!
Point of frustration. Administrative mandates and invoking collaboration when admin needs to fabricate consensus.
That is on my wall - I see that every day as a reminder! :-)
power of connection, not how you were taught, but what could edu be like, thats the shift
Good news! Thanks for sharing...
We do need a balance there...

groans come from having to make change? the shift has to be collabing and sharing to make Ss better, Ts become better

it's too bad. Some teams are on board and excited, but I wonder if that changes school to school?
yep, then I ask the question would I want my child to be with that T? All Ss different, lessons need to change too
i think it does change from school to school, pockets becomes puddles, which become lakes, Ts have to buy in for success
