Time to roll out the red carpet and welcome all of you amazing educators for joining #BookCampPD this evening. I am Meredith Johnson, your moderator. Please introduce yourself and share a tidbit about what writing instruction means to you.
Oh yes, it is true! We have 3 authors of "From Striving to Thriving Writers" joining our chat about their soon-to-be released book. Please welcome @Stephharvey49@saraholbrook and @michaelsalinger Their efforts create a "ripple affect" that will be felt for years! #BookCampPD
Hello #BookCampPD! Maria, 4th grade T from NJ 👋🏽 the importance of writing cannot be stressed enough as it is the chance for Ss to express themselves in such a real way
Jessica, Ed Specialist for ESC Region 12...writing instruction to me means helping individuals put their thoughts and voice to print in a way that will allow others to understand their perspective. #BookCampPD
Hi, all! Sylvia, Writing Coach @BrandonHSEagles ... writing instruction should provide tools to help students communicate more clearly ... I’m passionate about helping sts write better #BookCampPD
My apologizes for scheduling this book before it's actually release. There was a "snafu" w/ getting it published so tonight we are "priming the pump" (how many have done this?) to build excitement about "From Striving to Thriving Writers." Thank you for being here!! #BookCampPD
I believe it will. Part of my professional development plan this year is to use some new instructional strategies so I am looking forward to digging in to this book! #BookCampPD
I always think that writing instruction has to be more than assigning/scoring/feedback ... we need lessons that target deficits ... my focus is on writing in response to text! #BookCampPD
A1. They could begin with a greater focus on writing by beginning on October 20th - National Day on Writing - with ideas all during the month shared by @NCTEhttps://t.co/epMWNeJTMj#BookCampPD
A1. I think giving students choice and time to write it’s very important. The students need a chance to write whatever they want to write as well. #BookCampPD
A1: model being a writer - let Ss see you write, study mentor texts, create authentic experiences in which Ss can share their writing, and allow for #studentchoice#BookCampPD
One of the approaches in this book is to teach specific writing elements so that striving writers can gain practice and comfort for later use. Much the same way a baseball practice might be broken into different attributes to be consolidated at game time #bookcamppd
A1. I have observed "fabulous" writing initiatives or programs being implemented in schools only to see it slowly, flicker and go by the wayside as time passes. Perhaps, 1st educators should examine what it is they want to accomplish and plan steps together #BookCampPD
A1: By diligently carving out precious minutes for writing in your daily routine (not letting other “good things” interfere with that time slot) and by working hard to help Ss value/enjoy the process of expressing their thoughts in writing. #BookCampPD
A1: Provide authentic writing opportunities, write every day, write along with students, don’t mark every paper up with red ink, and hold one on One conferences with students. #BookCampPD
A1: The best way to foster and inspire writing in our classroom is by allowing Ss to write from the heart!
Providing explicit support to strengthen their writing!

#bookcamppd Choice is huge in middle school! I can’t tell you how many zombie stories I read in 7th grade, but they loved writing gory stuff. I still could teach conventions & craft with zombies.

#bookcamppd This is something I believe teachers will really appreciate with this book. The explicit breakdown of the elements into fleshed-out lessons within each writing framework.

A1: Using the workshop model is powerful. This opens the doors wide for learner agency and differentiation. It also allows Ts to build authentic relationships with Ss through conferring (and it's all about relationships). https://t.co/sWLRNXxMiw#bookcamppd
A1: Ts should write...when you understand the process personally it helps when you teach someone...otherwise you have difficulty connecting. #BookCampPD

A1: TIME. Time to write. Time to share. Time to confer. Time to respond. Time to think. Time to publish. Time to celebrate finish products. Time to reflect on their learning. #BookCampPD
I love writing in response to text with my students - and challenging Ss to make writing moves similar to that of authors in their favorite texts! Such a great motivator/idea generator!! #BookCampPD
A2. Teachers need to be modeling modeling modeling. There are so many skills required for writing that for many of our students it’s overwhelming. #BookCampPD
#bookcamppd Agreed. There are tons of “programs” out there with beautiful consumables & online content. But, authentic & powerful writing instruction happens face-to-face between learners.
A1. I have observed "fabulous" writing initiatives or programs being implemented in schools only to see it slowly, flicker and go by the wayside as time passes. Perhaps, 1st educators should examine what it is they want to accomplish and plan steps together #BookCampPD
A2. Increase feedback.
Schedule conferences into writing assignments. Purposefully plan for peer feedback that is descriptive, non-judgmental, specific to one thing the writer did well and one area to improve and allow time for students to respond back and forth. #BookCampPD
A2: Use mentor texts...let the students hear a variety of voices and see different styles...let them know it’s more than a 5-paragraph essay. #BookCampPD

A3. Question - what are these 27 writing strategies and why will they be more effective than other ideas that have been implemented in the past? #BookCampPD
A2: Model your writing process - let students see how you write/revise/publish your work and the genuine joy in your own eyes when you craft your ideas into words!! We’ve got to sell Ss on the wonders of writing like book talks sell them on value of great books! #BookCampPD
A2: Teachers should give specific feedback to all writers to encourage them to continue what they are doing well and to support them as they grow. #bookcampPD
#BookCampPD A3: Craft lessons for all genres. (Okay....I may have an advantage here, but this is a big one for me. Craft isn’t just in literary genres.)

I agree! But no need to wait until the piece is near completion - talk about what is happening in real time - ask questions of the students as they write and invite them to share a sentence or two during the process - then commend or steer as needed.
Well, my 9-10th graders are in that grade level for writing ... sometimes we need to glean freat ideas from our MS and ES folks ... I hope to use more writing conferences with sts this year #BookCampPD
A3. My special needs students just do not understand how to put all their ideas down when the are writing. All the components of writing goes over their head. Will the book provide strategies to help bridge the gap between their oral responses and written ones? #bookcamppd
A2 Model model model - write with your students - take suggestions from them as you do so - make mistakes - cross out - rewrite - think aloud! Title it Version 1!
Hi I’m Jaslyn, K-5 ESL Teacher from NC. I’m happy to be here & excited about this book. Writing instruction to me, means students being engaged in an activity that is purposeful & allows them to share their experiences & knowledge to readers. @mjjohnson1216#BookCampPD
A3: I work with teachers & schools across many countries, and TIME is the ?. I see this play out in my current middle school as well. Does the book include practical strategies for maximizing meaningful writing while also holding true to all balanced lit. components? #bookcamppd
A4. I have observed many ELL students struggle with writing. How does a culture of conversation become especially beneficial for emerging bilingual students? #BookCampPD

I would have LOVED it if even one of my teachers would have conferenced with me when I was trying so hard to learn about improving. The red marks didn't help .... #BookCampPD

A4: You have to build TRUE dialogue. You have to be in the present moment with each writer (What does THIS writer need most in THIS moment?) and truly LISTEN to what they are thinking. This builds trust, which opens the door to a true writing partnership. #bookcamppd
YES - if we attack their grammar/writing conventions right away, Ss writing enthusiasm will die. We must carefully nurture them as they begin taking the risk to put their hearts on paper, and thoughtfully/gradually begin to weed out grammar mistakes after that. #BookCampPD
A4: the “share” portion of the workshop would be a good time for this. Ss share writing and then, have opportunities to talk about each other’s writing through the rest of workshop lessons #BookCampPD
Here are the two books we will highlight during October. Plenty of time to order your copy now. Scroll down to locate the book https://t.co/9CFlAaeEpo#BookCampPD
#bookcamppd This is always about creating a place where sharing is the norm. Everyone shares. Some share in writing. Some share in sketches. Some share orally. But everyone shares because everyone’s voice is valued.

A4 Have periodic share times where the objective is to tell stories. Any story or within a particular category. For example, favorite place and why. #BookCampPD

A2: They should definitely make time to hear their students work before a due date. This allows them time to give their student feedback to help their student improve on their writing skills. #BookCampPD
Ready for #BookCampPD 's next Fall Focus book? Please join @Shapiro_WTHS as our guest moderator and, the following week, @mandyeellis - guest author.
This is one book I would gift to any school who truly wants to develop a literacy focus.
100% agree with you!! They are 2 sides of the same coin - to grow healthy/strong readers we must be growing healthy/strong writers at the same time! #BookCampPD
#bookcamppd Students will write about their learning, reading and discussing their learning. The writing then becomes an artifact of their discussion. These short texts can be developed into more sophisticated writing or just serve as a formative assessment.
Voices...a variety of voices...so often our Ss think their stories don't matter...I want them to know that they do and to see other role models for this. #BookCampPD
Please take a minute and thank the amazing authors of "From Striving to Thriving Writers" @Stephharvey49@saraholbrook and @michaelsalinger for joining our chat this evening. Just think of the impact their book will make in classrooms! #BookCampPD
A4: For English language learners, if your expecting them to write, you must encourage them to talk first! The Talk, Read, Talk, Write model by @nancymotleyTRTW is powerful!
Check it out! #TRTW 🗣📖🗣📝

#bookcamppd Yes! Short texts are the gateway. I’ve seen many teachers insist on the longer pieces for “stamina’s sake” but do much learning can happen in frequent & smaller writings.
