It is ironic to see all the advanced degrees in , and yet many of us are about to be laid off by legislators with much less education
do you have to be a classroom teacher to be national board certified?
A1) I am not board certified b/c in CA the benefit of it wasn’t explained. I’ve met more Ts here in OK who are NBCT than in CA.
Not sure on that one - you had to have classroom experience. 3 years i think..
A1) Encouragement by colleagues that were NBCTs. Respect for them and hopes to shape the profession.
A1: I'm strongly considering it in addtion to my MM.Ed, if you have done it please share your experiences!
Nathalie Henderson, M.Ed, Ed.S & Ph.D former Sped teacher now ILD in
A1)I am not yet but I am doing it because of the growth and meaning.
A1- not board cert yet, but chose it bc of scholarship. Nat'l board increases pay just like masters, without student loan debt
Michelle Grinsteiner, M.Ed and Former NBCT EA Science
OK USED to be in the Top 5; now we've slipped to Top 10 in numbers of
A1: Great opp. to take a good hard look at my practice. Culture is in place in my district. Very rewarding.
right - you have to video yourself teaching w/different classroom constructs.
A1. I came from out of state as well, and never heard of nbct until I got here. https://t.co/8e2UORKSq6
A1) I am not board certified b/c in CA the benefit of it wasn’t explained. I’ve met more Ts here in OK who are NBCT than in CA.
Oops! Running late, ! Christie Paradise, Mid-Del.
Lloyd Snow SS supt. Lurking again
A1: I'm going for it because it seems like a reflective process that could only benefit my Ss.
A1) wanted to be a better teacher and of course the money was a great incentive.
A1 Wanted to go through the process to reflect on my practices and become a better teacher. The money was also an incentive.
Yes! I'm planning to attend on Saturday, Jan.30.
I'm lurking and learning tonight.
I have chosen the process because I want to reflect on my actual classroom practice and become a better teacher.
I agree, but you can get the masters without debt as well
A1 -- in the 'old days,' the idea of contributing to my family AND staying in the classroom I loved was a huge draw.
A1) I am, and it chose me. :) Being alt cert, I was looking for what to do and I had a fabulous mentor going through the process.
stinking funding….Nevermind the amazing teacher growth...
Q2. If you have earned your Master’s degree, but are not an , why did you choose that route? https://t.co/jgEGVDF5NW
Rob Reck - Retired music educator, blogger, and ray of sunshine.
We look forward to your visit ! We appreciate your support of !!! https://t.co/kIpmQcwJDf
Yes! I'm planning to attend on Saturday, Jan.30.
A1- Chose NBCT because of money & veteran teacher convinced me it was best reflective practice and growth for me as a young teacher.
Wanted to get into administration
You stole my answer because YOU are my answer!
Just saying.. , anyone interested in MS Ed, EdD or PhD from , happy to get you to the right people! DM me! :)
A2: I got my Masters immediately after by BA. I was in Student Mode. Now that I'm teaching, I see the benefit of NBC.
A2) When I did my certification prgrm it was embedded with a Master’s degree and CLAD certification. The pay was more too.
A2 -- My masters is in secondary reading. 2nd yr of teaching, I taught 'reading' wo a clue. I needed2 learn! Be a better teacher.
A2 The master's program I chose helped me get my teaching certificate, seemed like a good combo! https://t.co/AaDNaNIHhP
Q2. If you have earned your Master’s degree, but are not an , why did you choose that route? https://t.co/jgEGVDF5NW
Good evening ! I'm following along tonight! - Rep. Wood, Shawnee
A2: The Masters I'm getting ties directly into making me a better musician and a better teacher of musicians.
Does anyone have a master's in English Education? How did that help in your classroom practice?
A2. Wanted to be an administrator so chose M.Ed. If staying in classroom, I would have chosen NBCT.
A2 My family was on WIC & Sooner Care. It was my only route to stay in education and provide more for them. https://t.co/DnMUnM6B0Z
Q2. If you have earned your Master’s degree, but are not an , why did you choose that route? https://t.co/jgEGVDF5NW
I’m not going to say I enjoyed the entire process - but wow - it made a difference!
It's always good to see new faces! Welcome!
A2) Admin masters gave me insight in every aspect of how a school works. Get to see teaching through principal's viewpoint now.
Always great to have legislator(s) and the state super join
A2 Admin opportunities. is an amazing program!
A2) I have never thought of it as an either/or. I have a master’s and going for NBCT. I’m in the learning/growing business
True statement right here! https://t.co/c8F02VMjro
A1: I'm going for it because it seems like a reflective process that could only benefit my Ss.
- nothing wrong w wanting to be paid for our knowledge. Kept me in the classroom where I belong.
A2: I chose the masters because I felt like it was more marketable and many other states require it early in a career.
A2) I didn't know much about NBCT but I wanted to further my education.
A2: I just never have had the desire to get my National Board.
A2b My undergrad was in sociology...which sadly didn't help me get a job post-college at all! I wish I'd had a college counselor!
a1 pursued M. Ed and nbts @ same time - during my 3rd yr as a t. Both helped shape me into what I hope to be an effective T/coach
A1 I wanted a challenge and to measure my practice against a higher standard
A2: I felt at the time a master's would be more meaningful for my discipline (music). Felt NBCT was targeted to math/reading/ELA
increases pay UNLIKE masters in that it's about 10x the money in
A2: My undergrad college advisor talked me into it
A2) Funny story - my masters was based on the NBCT process - and I got a laptop!
A2. First did MEd bc you have to teach 3yrs. In hindsight, I wish I would have done MEd with core. https://t.co/YMyQfizdFN
Q2. If you have earned your Master’s degree, but are not an , why did you choose that route? https://t.co/jgEGVDF5NW
Q1 Alternative Cert had MBA first
A2 Master's was the way into admin. At time, funding for NBCT looked in jeopardy.
I have an embedded cross-cultural teaching M.Ed. and it helps me understand the diverse Ss in my clsrm.
Its what we should all want. https://t.co/1DoWCWXTr8
A1 I wanted a challenge and to measure my practice against a higher standard
Exactly...I learned in both programs...Not EITHER/OR
great point, same experience here. Curious if a study in improved outcomes have been done for that extra $
A3) I do not have both. Only the M.Ed.
Q2 M Ed in Ed Tech Leadership b/c it was program i could use in my classroom right away /progr. not offered in OK but needed.
I have yet to find anywhere where all masters costs are paid like Nat'l board
A2 I am both an NBCT and have a masters plus Ed leadership certification
A3) After getting my I wanted to go into administration.
true.. and it make me sad.. We work really hard to increase scholarships, but the payscale payout is low.
A2: Masters in Reading helped me become a better teacher. I learned a lot from the elementary Ts in the classes.
A3- I wanted to continue to grow as a leader in my district. District Cohort enticed me and kept me going.
A2 I am alternative certified so went the MA curriculum and instruction and a Ph.D. In education route instead of NBCT.
7th Grade Geog T from part of team checking in late for had to get homework done...
A3 My wife/spec ed teacher has 2 masters degrees, is writing her dissertation and is NBCT. She is a nerd!!
Sandra Park, ex dir joining late...
National Board no longer covers all costs, although it covers most.
$$$$ at first…Turns out I like learning…about myself and how to be a better teacher.
A2: I explored NB once upon a time, then moved, decided on M. Ed later in career
A3. The desire to be a perpetual learner! I Being on both sides of the podium= empathy. Going for PhD now. https://t.co/3oE7BZWCtD
A3 I've always loved learning and wanted a masters degree NB helped me find what area
A3 After student teaching I was unsure about teaching. Some time as a grad. asst., completed the degree, jumped in for 35 yrs.
A2: In the process of earning Masters degree now. Not in Ed field tho. That wld be why I chose that route https://t.co/q9V7iQexrs
Q2. If you have earned your Master’s degree, but are not an , why did you choose that route? https://t.co/jgEGVDF5NW
Good question, and one we can't answer since stipend support has been withdrawn.
Now considering doctorate, but in C&I. I want to work with teachers.
Honestly, got my masters to be more marketable in my career field. Knew teaching was my passion. Wanted to open more doors.
We enjoy learning from you and with you https://t.co/UvNsEHRdRv
$$$$ at first…Turns out I like learning…about myself and how to be a better teacher.
A2) was halfway done with a masters when I graduated undergrad. Figured I'd finish. By the time I finished, no more NBC scholarships
did you get to use similar artifacts for each!? That would make both experiences really worthwhile!
A4) I am not a NBCT so I am unable to answer.
A3 missed nbct by 20 pts didn't redo bc by the time I got my scores I had ambitions of leaving the classroom to be an inst coach
I love learning, too! I hope to one day earn my master's degree, and perhaps a Ph.D. as well.
A3) Pro-Best PD ever. Con-Still not as respected as a professional
Scholarships are back! Just no stipends...a salary line now.
A3 Earned my MS directly after my BS and before entering education. NBCT made me a better teacher for my students.
A2) MEd in educational technology. There is no national board cert for technology. Also any cert teacher can teach tech in OK.
Hi John Michael Montgomery, Representing Okla. House District 62 in Lawton. Likely a lurker tonight!
it also makes sad, that many AMAZING teachers leave education once they get Masters due to income opps.
A1: I wanted to lead by example for my students! I expect them to pass certifications, so what shouldn't the teacher.
A4 Pro reflection process was enlightening; Con choosing this to be paid closer to a prof rate & expecting to be treated differently
A4) Cons: It took me two tries to earn enough points to qualify as a NBCT.
Pro: it was an amazing experience!
I've known a lot of NBCT who lost the bonus becoming teacher leaders or administrators. That's frustrating. https://t.co/1LSRMpye73
A4: Pros-reflection Cons-getting in over my head.
But I'm not a classroom teacher anymore. That ship has sailed.
Lurking works! Thanks for checking on your constituaents https://t.co/RpgfcxjJhH
Hi John Michael Montgomery, Representing Okla. House District 62 in Lawton. Likely a lurker tonight!
A3) I have my NBC, but not my masters because the NBC scholarship was there. Still want a masters though. It's the one I'm missing.
Me thinks someone would be really good here….I know a person you should talk to…
A4: Pros-reflection, guidance, fellowship. Cons- time, energy, focus for a while.
A2) Got my 2nd masters bc I wanted to be a science specialist
A4) Pros - reflection, reflection, reflection. Pushing yourself further than you thought you could.
A4 -- Pro-everything I did reflected my own practice. My growth was incredible. Met other Ts who are mentors and friends.
LuVona Copeland NBCT 2007. Pro: Self reflecrion on practice. Confidence.
A4) Cons - lots of time and ambiguity.
Do 300 school districts need to consolidate? Will this truly save money? What does Quality look like? Q1?
A2 Currently earning my master's degree. Bachelor's was in Elementary Education. Now focusing on technology and virtual classrooms.
A4 cons: it's a LOT of work pros: it makes you a better, more reflective, student-centered teacher
A2 I began my teaching in HS. I could easily see that a main problem was students had reading problems. I went to get Elem and Rd .
I really enjoyed the Master's process. Will look for a doctorate at some point.
I can use "I was doing my Master's homework" as an excuse for being a bit late to the chat right???
A4 -- Biggest PRO- Education Leadership Oklahoma -- the best support program in the country. Scholarships, meetings, training.
offers MEd in Teaching with NBCT core.
A4) Pros -better practices, better instruction, more impact on students, and $. Cons - can be time consuming and the wait for scores
Amy Presley joining in on for the last half. I teach History with Broken Arrow High School
pro: met a ton of great teachers and mentors (like Claudia swisher)
Another con - the pay bump did not follow me as a GA in the college ranks…But I know my stuff :-)
A2 thought there was more potential to use Masters. Created opportunities.
For me, a master's or NBCT aren't the only certifications out there...I've worked hard to be google certified educator, trainer!
this is something I would love to do!
A5: Pros-I get to take music classes!!! Con-Money.
I am working on my double masters...administration and special education... I am trying to provide better for my family...
A5a) The Pros of my M.Ed. include a better understanding of my profession and how to conduct research properly.
Sorry new at this. A4 Pros are reflection on practice and confidence.
I have looked into this, as well. What would you say are the pros and cons?
I think we need to expose how many Ts children qualify for free/reduced lunch. agree?
It was a good time and a great learning experience! Enjoyed working with you and the others!
A5 -- Pro--I could concentrate on my field. Con--had to take classes that had no relevance to me.
A1- Have you ever road a bus for an hour and a half? Everyday? My kids do
I highly recommend it! Next up, google certified innovator and/or apple certified educator!
A5) Pro - collaborating with other teachers in my area
A5b) The Cons include the costs involved, ineffective classes in rural areas, disconnect from the daily realities of a school dist.
A5 Earning my masters made me think about what/how I was teaching and look at big picture of the school. https://t.co/ooxzCY32Fd
A4 Pros: the teachers you meet and become friends with are phenomenal!
You should host that chat!
A5a: My MAEd covered a gap in language w/ reciprocity & pay bump during freeze helped
a5) Reading research now that you have practice experience.. lots of Ugrad stuff is wasted w/o experience. Masters=more meaningful .
A5: Lifelong learner, network w/ other ldrs, lead for success of all Ts, Ss, Parents, comm. https://t.co/dXYCdQ3ngm
A5: following a passion 4 my degree. It can & hopefully will be tied 2 career but I really love learning https://t.co/2cm0Lb4INd
A5. Having a MEd allowed me to adjunct and teach secondary at same time. Good to be in both modes! https://t.co/n4CrmQGVC1
A5) Grew me as an educator, introduced me to excellent educators, and built in me an interest in ed research
A5: pros-a lot more possibilities and can pursue various avenues, not just subject specific. cons-time and all programs are diff.
A5: Pros- Focused, guidance, grades, timely Cons- Cost! Not always relevant, focused on theory
A4- Con: took a lot of time
Pro- I learned a lot about my teaching, student learning and development and collaboration.
A5 hard to come up with cons other than the cost involved. We can never learn enough!
A5) Gave me great ideas to use in the classroom! It was so practical!
A5 Pros: time to learn & reflect, great networking, prof growth Cons: student loans, variation in quality https://t.co/JAOcKnZHAw
a4 con: state doesn't seem to reward or offer much incentive for either anymore...
A5: Pros: continuing my education has always been a goal. I will pursue doctorate 1day. Cons: tough w/2small kids @ home.
pros: deep understanding of , cons: my district wouldn't pay for the tests
A5) Pros: Excellent profs and colleagues to learn from. Flexible class schedule for working teachers .
A5 Con: Teachers who earn a Masters and stay in the classroom probably will never earn back what they spent.
Con-two master's degrees and my pay raise barely moved. Pro-I'm a reading specialist and learned to create/innovate curriculum.
A5) Pros - money and colleagues who are as passionate as you. Cons- cost and time.
I was thinking the same thing. Also got a very little raise for it. Would have been more in private sector https://t.co/VO6HEFCsr7
A5 hard to come up with cons other than the cost involved. We can never learn enough!
This is exactly what I am wanting to do.
A4- Con: took a lot of time
Pro- I learned a lot about my teaching, student learning and development and collaboration.
Q4 Decided at 66 it was a little late to do National Cert.
And THAT was the draw for NB -- I earned the stipend ONLY if I stayed in the classroom full time.
A5 Pros...created opportunities in education to be change agent. Cons - Cost and some hoop jumping
A5) pros...met great educators through the process, opened many doors of opp; cons...I haven't experience any.
A5) Con....It cost money, however, what I gained out of it was well worth it to me
A5 - Pro - opens the door for opportunity.
Con - can’t think of anything negative about learning
Loving the Q5 responses great array of perspectives.
A5: Seeing the "big picture", growing & learning, networking
A5) At the time, Okeene paid 125$ per credit hour + teacher loan forgiveness. Burlington now pays all expenses toward a masters
Def an thing. MO gave me the cost back in a few years. Most T were getting grad degrees within 10 years. https://t.co/0qgBTd2Tu8
A5 Con: Teachers who earn a Masters and stay in the classroom probably will never earn back what they spent.
A5 pros: the learning and interaction with others. cons: expense!
. A5 con not cost effective. for masters is the $1k pay bump will take about 20 yrs to pay for itself... Give or take
True! https://t.co/LvNPTu2IjA
A4: Pros: New opportunities, learning how to embed the five core propositions into all your teaching, and networking with other NBCTs!
A4 Pros: mentoring others in NB & knowing you are making a difference in their lives & the lives of ALL the children they touch
Plus it connected me with a worldwide community of educators, which has been eye-opening!
A5- Pro- district cohort teachers were able to provide inside view to district workings, collaborated with great teachers,
Con-cost
A5) Pros- the expertise you gain. Cons- it takes YEARS to recoup the pay
A5) Another pro is that it led me into working on my doctorate degree
I get that.. we need to continue our work n this area.
A6: Domain IV. So nice that there is a focus on teacher contribution outside of the classroom.
is a great program! It's also reasonably priced. If you let a Student T work under u, it's half off https://t.co/GXfCVdHJWW
A5 Con: Teachers who earn a Masters and stay in the classroom probably will never earn back what they spent.
A5) Con - I have a doctorate, so any cost of the masters would never be paid back. Still gonna do it eventually though.
that’s so true, unfortunately
A6 True self reflection. We can become our best coach
Learning a lot lurking tonight! Great Archive to have!
A6 -- everything I did for NB was embedded in my class, my practice, my students. I was forced to stop & reflect on all this.
A5: it's cost prohibitive for most-the pay-scale increase doesn't justify the cost of getting the degree
I almost went for my Ph.d in curriculum, but my children, one a senior & the other a freshman were more important.
A6) I cannot explain in a tweet how immersive and growth developing the NBCT process was.
