    Good evening colleagues! #ycsdchat
  • REEdelstein Oct 24 @ 8:17 PM EDT
Roxana, YHS Social studies teacher, hopping on late after losing track of time lesson planning. A1: I want to teach students to love learning, but I think giving students the skills and knowledge their need to be successful on their own is also a good goal. #ycsdchat
  • MrsCooperYES Oct 24 @ 8:17 PM EDT
A2: Linking back to Q1, the real world application part is so important when assessing. Authentic assessments provide that preparation for real world problem solving and application of skills. #ycsdchat
  • hball1025 Oct 24 @ 8:17 PM EDT
A2-I think Relevant problem-solving that incorporates student choice in demonstration of mastery learning #ycsdchat
  • Lruffieux Oct 24 @ 8:19 PM EDT
A2: Regarding our ultimate goals, the graphic hits the nail on the head with authentic assessments #ycsdchat
  • kecagle - Moderator Oct 24 @ 8:19 PM EDT
Q2: Authentic assessments provide opportunities for students to demonstrate deeper understandng and the application of their learning in unique way. #ycsdchat
  • wallaceteaching Oct 24 @ 8:19 PM EDT
    Help, Team. I canā€™t see Q2 #ycsdchat
  • DChristian11 Oct 24 @ 8:19 PM EDT
I believe authentic assessment is based on more real world experience as opposed to traditional being more teacher oriented. #ycsdchat
  • MsInsley - Moderator Oct 24 @ 8:19 PM EDT
So true! Very rarely in the real world do you take a test to show what knowledge and experience you have! You complete a task! #ycsdchat
    In reply to @MrsCooperYES
  • REEdelstein Oct 24 @ 8:20 PM EDT
A2: When it comes to performance based assessments, we have to not only look at what skills/knowledge we want students to demonstrate, but how weā€™re going to evaluate students on those skills. Students need structure and clear expectations. #ycsdchat
  • SyaLaManque Oct 24 @ 8:20 PM EDT
A2: The graphic made me think of what we are doing each Wednesday. Conversations, sharing, learning. #ycsdchat

  • MrsSMBean Oct 24 @ 8:21 PM EDT
A2: The ā€œreal lifeā€ and ā€œconstructionā€ aspects catch my eye and make them more valuable in my opinion. #ycsdchat
  • holson00 Oct 24 @ 8:21 PM EDT
A2 Performance tasks require higher level thinking skills and these are the things kids remember. Kids want a purpose and to have choice. Performance tasks create high engagement and students want to come to school. #ycsdchat
  • mike_myoung Oct 24 @ 8:22 PM EDT
I think the authentic assessment gives students who struggle with traditional test a better way to show mastery. #ycsdchat
  • madams_va Oct 24 @ 8:22 PM EDT
    A1 Build/develop a love for learning #YCSDchat
  • leadegriffin Oct 24 @ 8:22 PM EDT
  • MsInsley - Moderator Oct 24 @ 8:24 PM EDT
This is our PLN, so let's get real with each other. We're all here to learn and grow. Question 3 #ycsdchat
  • kecagle - Moderator Oct 24 @ 8:24 PM EDT
Those two stand out to me too. Definitely showcase students learning. #ycsdchat
    In reply to @MrsSMBean
  • madams_va Oct 24 @ 8:25 PM EDT
A2- students problem solve through realistic problems while teachers facilitate and provide guidance. #YCSDchat
  • MsDurio Oct 24 @ 8:26 PM EDT
A2: My initial thoughts is that if our goal is for students to learn and be prepared for the real world then more opportunities for authentic learning should exist in your classrooms. #ycsdchat
  • MsInsley - Moderator Oct 24 @ 8:27 PM EDT
A3: It feels a little scary to step away from what has always been, but I've always enjoyed the experience and outcome when I have moved from traditional to authentic assessments #ycsdchat
  • DChristian11 Oct 24 @ 8:27 PM EDT
Q3: As a Physical Education teacher, I do performance based assessments all the time. It helps the students see how they can improve and also how successful they were at accomplishing a task.#ycsdchat
  • MrsCooperYES Oct 24 @ 8:27 PM EDT
A3: When PBAs came to the forefront with the deletion of SOLs, I attended several Region II trainings to help produce them. I feel pretty confident in using them, but sometimes think I can be more creative when creating them - however I always go back to simplicity! #ycsdchat
  • kecagle - Moderator Oct 24 @ 8:29 PM EDT
Implementing Performance Assessment in the Classroom https://t.co/WZgRzYL4Lj #ycsdchat
  • MrsSMBean Oct 24 @ 8:29 PM EDT
A3: Since they removed the SOL test from 7th grade history years ago Iā€™ve used more and more PBAs in my classroom and feel quite comfortable. Next week my Ss are using https://t.co/VGKJoDsMtl to complete an Immigrantā€™s Diary PBA. #ycsdchat
  • madams_va Oct 24 @ 8:29 PM EDT
A3 Understand and love the concept. Would want to develop student tasks/rubrics with a team. #YCSDchat
  • REEdelstein Oct 24 @ 8:29 PM EDT
A3: Iā€™m excited by the idea of using PBAs in my social studies classes, as Iā€™d love to turn my classroom into a museum, which would help Ss identify historically significant artifacts and show students a real world application of a history education: public history. #ycsdchat
  • MsDurio Oct 24 @ 8:29 PM EDT
A3: My understand is high, but my implementation is low. Itā€™s been awhile since Iā€™ve implemented PBA for students to demonstrate their knowledge. #ycsdchat
  • hball1025 Oct 24 @ 8:29 PM EDT
A3--I'm comfortable in knowledge of Ss & providing opportunities 4 Performance assessment-w/ SOL(knowledge & comp.) at forefront for so long-focus upfront has to be to help develop critical thinking and problem-solving so can complete this type of assessments w/ success #ycsdchat
  • holson00 Oct 24 @ 8:30 PM EDT
A3: I enjoy using performance based tasks in the classroom. It is complex to ensure that all standards are met with end of year standardized tests. #ycsdchat
  • mike_myoung Oct 24 @ 8:31 PM EDT
I'm good with creating and implementing the assessments. My biggest worry comes from the grading. Rubrics cause me to waffle back and forth. I worry about how my planning partner is grading. Am I too easy or too hard #ycsdchat
  • hball1025 Oct 24 @ 8:33 PM EDT
For this reason-I've started small this year with more open ended tasks and questions to begin and end lessons so students begin adapting to thinking more critically about content #ycsdchat
  • leadegriffin Oct 24 @ 8:33 PM EDT
A3: Just like our students ..we are afraid to make mistakes. Authentic Assessment planning means taking a risk. #ycsdchat
  • mike_myoung Oct 24 @ 8:34 PM EDT
Working in a team is critical. This is too difficult to do in isolation. I don't think you get the best assessment working by yourself. #ycsdchat
    In reply to @madams_va
  • kecagle - Moderator Oct 24 @ 8:35 PM EDT
I agree, grading is one of the most challenging parts. #ycsdchat
    In reply to @mike_myoung
  • kristinajdavis Oct 24 @ 8:35 PM EDT
A3: I understand the process and enjoy doing PBAs, but I do not use them as often as I would like to. #ycsdchat
  • MsInsley - Moderator Oct 24 @ 8:36 PM EDT
It sounds like creating PBA is a strength for many of you here tonight! Let's lean on each other for guidance as we endeavor to tackle more PBA this year #ycsdchat
  • swardensky Oct 24 @ 8:37 PM EDT
ETF for GBES and YES #ycsdchat
  • hball1025 Oct 24 @ 8:37 PM EDT
One of the biggest things is teaching Ss how to follow a rubric and create a plan when completing authentic performance based assessments as success criteria is all right there for them #ycsdchat
    In reply to @kecagle, @mike_myoung
  • MsInsley - Moderator Oct 24 @ 8:38 PM EDT
    Question 4 #ycsdchat
  • mike_myoung Oct 24 @ 8:38 PM EDT
Developing an effective PBA takes time. We certainly don't want to just put a PBA in order to say we are doing it. Anything worth doing is worth doing right. #ycsdchat

    Performance-Based Assessment: Reviewing the Basics | Edutopia https://t.co/8V2cYe3aff #ycsdchat
  • hball1025 Oct 24 @ 8:40 PM EDT
A4--there has to be a writing component to authentic assessment and the performance tasks included must always link back to the learning goal for the lesson #ycsdchat
  • MrsCooperYES Oct 24 @ 8:41 PM EDT
Q3: Real world problems that use the learned content, an element of choice that allows room for student interpretation, and a rubric that assesses the process and outcome of the solution. #ycsdchat
  • MsInsley - Moderator Oct 24 @ 8:41 PM EDT
A4: Great ?s to have in mind. What concept/skill do I want to measure? What do I want the students to know? Where should the students be performing? What am I assessing and how can I measure that clearly? #ycsdchat
  • DChristian11 Oct 24 @ 8:43 PM EDT
A4: I believe one of the hardest thing to do with PBA is making it authentic. Making it authentic makes it: * more motivating * encourages real-world skills (and transfer to real world) * can be complex and employ higher-level thinking *aids in real understanding #ycsdchat
  • madams_va Oct 24 @ 8:43 PM EDT
Thereā€™s more than one way to solve a problem. I would want to give Ss the opportunity to explain their thought process. That would enable me to confirm studentsā€™ knowledge of material and/or pinpoint where I need to reteach. #ycsdchat
  • MrsSMBean Oct 24 @ 8:44 PM EDT
A4: Consider what content/skills you are trying to have your SS show mastery of and what will be the best avenue for that to be accomplished. Certain skills lend themselves to PBAs easier than others. #ycsdchat
  • swardensky Oct 24 @ 8:44 PM EDT
Q4 STEM and engineering type lessons and follow up assessment would be a good PBA. Definitely with a rubric. #ycsdchat
  • kecagle - Moderator Oct 24 @ 8:45 PM EDT
A4: In addition to the ā€œessentialā€ skills students need for the real world such as communication, problem solving, teamwork, etc., itā€™s important that we ensure the task provides opportunity for students to show mastery of content standards. #ycsdchat
  • mike_myoung Oct 24 @ 8:46 PM EDT
Something I like to keep in mind when making a PBA is allowing for students to think about the information in a new way. #ycsdchat
  • MsInsley - Moderator Oct 24 @ 8:46 PM EDT
This seems like it might be a great topic for a session at #EdCampEVA some of you would make excellent facilitators and everyone would benefit from the opportunity to share! What do you think @kecagle ? #ycsdchat
  • hball1025 Oct 24 @ 8:46 PM EDT
A4-PBA's should always be designed as SMART as well #ycsdchat
  • MsInsley - Moderator Oct 24 @ 8:47 PM EDT
Some of you have already mentioned the rubric component to PBA, let's dig deeper into that topic Question 5 #ycsdchat
  • BaldwinTeach Oct 24 @ 8:50 PM EDT
A1: To guide students to reach beyond their perceived limitations and to become lifetime learners. #ycsdchat
  • hball1025 Oct 24 @ 8:50 PM EDT
A5-By involving Ss in creation they become empowered & learning becomes more focused and self-directed #ycsdchat
  • MrsCooperYES Oct 24 @ 8:52 PM EDT
A5 (P.S.) This reminds me of Passion Projects... We aren't told what to do for our Passion Project, but we are more likely to complete it because we chose it. Students are the same... Let them help to shape it and they will create their own goals to reach as well. #ycsdchat
  • MrsCooperYES Oct 24 @ 8:52 PM EDT
A5: Student input is important because they can help to mold the project into how they can best express their knowledge. If they have ownership in the creation of the assessment, they will be more engaged when completing it. #ycsdchat
  • kecagle - Moderator Oct 24 @ 8:52 PM EDT
A5: When students have input, they take ownership of their learning. Their voice is important. #ycsdchat
  • swardensky Oct 24 @ 8:53 PM EDT
Q5: I think ss should have a say in rubrics so they will have buy in. They can see where they are going and what they need to do to get get there. #ycsdchat
  • mike_myoung Oct 24 @ 8:53 PM EDT
I have never involved the students in the creation of the rubric, but I can see where they would be more invested in the PBA. I wonder how that could work with block scheduling and limited time? #ycsdchat
  • REEdelstein Oct 24 @ 8:53 PM EDT
A5: Having students help create rubrics also helps to hold them accountable. They should have a clear understandingly what is expected o f them from their teacher. #ycsdchat
  • kecagle - Moderator Oct 24 @ 8:53 PM EDT
    I ā¤ļø ā¤ļø ā¤ļø passion projects! #YCSDchat
    In reply to @MrsCooperYES
  • MsInsley - Moderator Oct 24 @ 8:54 PM EDT
A5: Having input lets the students know what they are working for. What is the target? How can I get there? #ycsdchat
  • madams_va Oct 24 @ 8:55 PM EDT
Students come up with unique ideas that I do not always anticipate. It can create gray areas on the rubric. Def want to give credit for creativity and out of the box responses. #ycsdchat
  • MsInsley - Moderator Oct 24 @ 8:55 PM EDT
Last question for the night! Question 6 #ycsdchat
  • BaldwinTeach Oct 24 @ 8:55 PM EDT
A4: Teachers need to keep in mind what it is that they want the students to be able to know and do. They need to consider how a students understanding may be tested in real life. #ycsdchat
  • DChristian11 Oct 24 @ 8:55 PM EDT
A5: I believe it helps Ss stay motivated and engaged. #ycsdchat
  • hball1025 Oct 24 @ 8:56 PM EDT
Provide a template or even a rubric and and ask for their ideas on what Ss would include or change using Forms on Office 365 as warm-up/exit ticket. You get spreadsheet of their responses and can create the final rubric from that for a PBA #ycsdchat
    In reply to @mike_myoung
  • drjaimemiller Oct 24 @ 8:58 PM EDT
Sorry I missed #ycsdchat, but paint night was a ā€œsmashingā€ success!
  • MsInsley - Moderator Oct 24 @ 8:58 PM EDT
A6: Back when we taught US History in 5th grade, I had my Ss write journals as colonists. They had to create a persona based on what we knew of the people from each colony we studied and write entries based on what their life would be like. #ycsdchat
  • mike_myoung Oct 24 @ 8:59 PM EDT
Planning our first PBA at the beginning of next week. Ss will identify a need/want for American Indians. Then identify a natural, human, and capital resource to meet it. Finally, Ss will explain how the resources work together to meet nee #ycsdchat
