A1: To grow all students to be successful in their future endeavors and as a social students teacher be active, involved citizens in an always-changing world. #ycsdchat
A1: think a teacher's ultimate goal is to educate and enrich the lives of students in order to be successful members of society and effective citizens. When students leave high school, they should be able to go into the workforce or college seamlessly. #ycsdchat
A1: Ultimately, we want them to be successful in our classroom and beyond. We want what we're teaching them to be useful and we want them to be able to show what they know. #ycsdchat
A1: think a teacher's ultimate goal is to educate and enrich the lives of students in order to be successful members of society and effective citizens. When students leave high school, they should be able to go into the workforce or college seamlessly. #ycsdchat
A1--To teach Ss tools that lead to success in all challenges in life-grit, empathy, self-control, integrity, & embrace diversity. History is the framework through by which I teach life #ycsdchat
A1: The ultimate goal is to prepare our students for their future by equipping them with the skills & knowledge they will need for both work and personal experiences #ycsdchat
Roxana, YHS Social studies teacher, hopping on late after losing track of time lesson planning.
A1: I want to teach students to love learning, but I think giving students the skills and knowledge their need to be successful on their own is also a good goal. #ycsdchat
A2: Linking back to Q1, the real world application part is so important when assessing. Authentic assessments provide that preparation for real world problem solving and application of skills. #ycsdchat
Q2: Authentic assessments provide opportunities for students to demonstrate deeper understandng and the application of their learning in unique way. #ycsdchat
A2: When it comes to performance based assessments, we have to not only look at what skills/knowledge we want students to demonstrate, but how weāre going to evaluate students on those skills. Students need structure and clear expectations. #ycsdchat
A2 Performance tasks require higher level thinking skills and these are the things kids remember. Kids want a purpose and to have choice. Performance tasks create high engagement and students want to come to school. #ycsdchat
A2: My initial thoughts is that if our goal is for students to learn and be prepared for the real world then more opportunities for authentic learning should exist in your classrooms. #ycsdchat
A3: It feels a little scary to step away from what has always been, but I've always enjoyed the experience and outcome when I have moved from traditional to authentic assessments #ycsdchat
Q3: As a Physical Education teacher, I do performance based assessments all the time. It helps the students see how they can improve and also how successful they were at accomplishing a task.#ycsdchat
A3: When PBAs came to the forefront with the deletion of SOLs, I attended several Region II trainings to help produce them. I feel pretty confident in using them, but sometimes think I can be more creative when creating them - however I always go back to simplicity! #ycsdchat
A3: Since they removed the SOL test from 7th grade history years ago Iāve used more and more PBAs in my classroom and feel quite comfortable. Next week my Ss are using https://t.co/VGKJoDsMtl to complete an Immigrantās Diary PBA. #ycsdchat
A3: Iām excited by the idea of using PBAs in my social studies classes, as Iād love to turn my classroom into a museum, which would help Ss identify historically significant artifacts and show students a real world application of a history education: public history. #ycsdchat
A3: My understand is high, but my implementation is low. Itās been awhile since Iāve implemented PBA for students to demonstrate their knowledge. #ycsdchat
A3--I'm comfortable in knowledge of Ss & providing opportunities 4 Performance assessment-w/ SOL(knowledge & comp.) at forefront for so long-focus upfront has to be to help develop critical thinking and problem-solving so can complete this type of assessments w/ success #ycsdchat
A3: I enjoy using performance based tasks in the classroom. It is complex to ensure that all standards are met with end of year standardized tests. #ycsdchat
I'm good with creating and implementing the assessments. My biggest worry comes from the grading. Rubrics cause me to waffle back and forth. I worry about how my planning partner is grading. Am I too easy or too hard #ycsdchat
For this reason-I've started small this year with more open ended tasks and questions to begin and end lessons so students begin adapting to thinking more critically about content #ycsdchat
It sounds like creating PBA is a strength for many of you here tonight! Let's lean on each other for guidance as we endeavor to tackle more PBA this year #ycsdchat
One of the biggest things is teaching Ss how to follow a rubric and create a plan when completing authentic performance based assessments as success criteria is all right there for them #ycsdchat
Developing an effective PBA takes time. We certainly don't want to just put a PBA in order to say we are doing it. Anything worth doing is worth doing right. #ycsdchat
A4--there has to be a writing component to authentic assessment and the performance tasks included must always link back to the learning goal for the lesson #ycsdchat
Q3: Real world problems that use the learned content, an element of choice that allows room for student interpretation, and a rubric that assesses the process and outcome of the solution. #ycsdchat
A4: Great ?s to have in mind. What concept/skill do I want to measure? What do I want the students to know? Where should the students be performing? What am I assessing and how can I measure that clearly? #ycsdchat
A4: I believe one of the hardest thing to do with PBA is making it authentic. Making it authentic makes it:
* more motivating
* encourages real-world skills (and transfer to real world)
* can be complex and employ higher-level thinking
*aids in real understanding #ycsdchat
Thereās more than one way to solve a problem. I would want to give Ss the opportunity to explain their thought process. That would enable me to confirm studentsā knowledge of material and/or pinpoint where I need to reteach. #ycsdchat
A4: Consider what content/skills you are trying to have your SS show mastery of and what will be the best avenue for that to be accomplished. Certain skills lend themselves to PBAs easier than others. #ycsdchat
A4: In addition to the āessentialā skills students need for the real world such as communication, problem solving, teamwork, etc., itās important that we ensure the task provides opportunity for students to show mastery of content standards. #ycsdchat
This seems like it might be a great topic for a session at #EdCampEVA some of you would make excellent facilitators and everyone would benefit from the opportunity to share! What do you think @kecagle ? #ycsdchat
A5 (P.S.) This reminds me of Passion Projects... We aren't told what to do for our Passion Project, but we are more likely to complete it because we chose it. Students are the same... Let them help to shape it and they will create their own goals to reach as well. #ycsdchat
A5: Student input is important because they can help to mold the project into how they can best express their knowledge. If they have ownership in the creation of the assessment, they will be more engaged when completing it. #ycsdchat
Q5: I think ss should have a say in rubrics so they will have buy in. They can see where they are going and what they need to do to get get there. #ycsdchat
I have never involved the students in the creation of the rubric, but I can see where they would be more invested in the PBA. I wonder how that could work with block scheduling and limited time? #ycsdchat
A5: Having students help create rubrics also helps to hold them accountable. They should have a clear understandingly what is expected o f them from their teacher. #ycsdchat
Students come up with unique ideas that I do not always anticipate. It can create gray areas on the rubric. Def want to give credit for creativity and out of the box responses. #ycsdchat
A4: Teachers need to keep in mind what it is that they want the students to be able to know and do. They need to consider how a students understanding may be tested in real life. #ycsdchat
Provide a template or even a rubric and and ask for their ideas on what Ss would include or change using Forms on Office 365 as warm-up/exit ticket. You get spreadsheet of their responses and can create the final rubric from that for a PBA #ycsdchat
A6: Back when we taught US History in 5th grade, I had my Ss write journals as colonists. They had to create a persona based on what we knew of the people from each colony we studied and write entries based on what their life would be like. #ycsdchat
Planning our first PBA at the beginning of next week. Ss will identify a need/want for American Indians. Then identify a natural, human, and capital resource to meet it. Finally, Ss will explain how the resources work together to meet nee #ycsdchat
