#FLedchat is a virtual meeting place using Twitter. Educators across the state of Florida come together on Wednesdays at 8pm EST to discuss the topics of the week.
Hi, #FLedChat! Great to see everyone. Got to spend some time this week in Tallahassee, learning about upcoming education legislation. Much work to be done to better support Florida's teachers, students, and families. Let's get 'em #futureready!
Before we get this party started, I'd like to remind everyone to use the #FLedChat hashtag so we can follow your tweets. We will follow the Q1/A1 format. Huge thanks to @dkonopelko for assistance with the questions!
very similar to all the simulations that are supposed to replace the real thing ... like "look you draw the wire on the ipad and the light turns on" ... like that replaces the real thing. #fledchat
don't get me started on the vendors and EduSalesPeople ... #fledchat if I see another ball that follows a marker trail or a robot that can hold a marker it will be too soon ... #fledchat
A1. I think back to something @LemarrTreadwell said in last week's chat. They look like people who can communicate clearly, collaborate effectively, & use knowledge to create. With or without technology. #FLedChat
A #futureready student not only knows how to learn, but is motivated to learn, take risks, and try new things. They feel empowered to adapt to changes and take control of their own outcomes. #FLedChat
Mixing chemicals on screen is not the same a doing it in real life ... "wiring" switches on an ipad ... not the same a building it with your hands ... good for theory, but not reality. #fledchat

strange that education does not promote that ... we say we do, but let's be honest ... learn these standards in this order is the rule of the day. Adapt to the testing schedule ... persevere through the stuff that does not inspire you. #fledchat
That's true, but if I can't accurately predict the future, I would at least like my students to possess the qualities I mentioned. I also like adaptability. Things change so fast. They need to be able to move with the changes. #FLedChat
but too many are seeing it as the cheap, clean, safe way to cover a standard ... #fledchat we can't even bring in a working blacksmith to school because ... well ... there are no fires allowed on campus.

At places like the Pioneer Settlement for the Arts in Barberville, they can see one in action. I agree, however, you should be able to bring things like that to school. #FLedChat
A2. Create lesson plans that allow students to develop these skills. Technology today is excellent in allowing new opportunities to develop these skills. #fledchat
A2: support teachers by fostering a learning environment where they are treated w/ respect & encouraged to develop a growth mindset, experiment, take risks, learn from mistakes, receive coaching... and get paid enough to improve their practice with the long run in mind! #FLedChat
No, I get it. It might just be the thing to get them to try new things on their own. I wonder if teachers don't because we are so conditioned to avoid failure? #FLedChat
Stringent, score- and curriculum map-based evaluations make it hard for some educators to feel empowered to take risks and innovate. Need a culture shift --- demand from students and families, paired with transformation in leadership from the top. #FLedChat
A3 have companies Skype into the classroom. Take company field trips. Maybe have a shark tank setup with business peeps with student prototypes #fledchat
A3: Lakeland, Florida's own All Saints Academy won the #FETC high school STEM award. A big part of their innovation academy is community partnerships where their students are working to solve real community problems with local businesses and organizations. #FLedChat
A4 the problem is that any measure we look is going to relate to time. Students learn at different rates and different levels of depth. How do you measure that fairly? #fledchat

A4. I don't think quiet & seated translates to engagement & learning necessarily. I think our kids need to be up, moving, learning about things that interest them. We can measure their learning through performance tasks & by talking with them about what they are doing. #FLedChat
Do we have to measure everything? I don't measure my own children with a yardstick daily, monthly or even yearly. I might recognize they've gotten taller relative to something else. I don't need the exact measurement to confirm that they've grown. #FLedChat
