Q1 Reflection is an important part of the student learning cycle. Why? What are the benefits of creating opportunities for reflection in our classrooms? #MTedchat
A1 Reflection allows our students to pause and think about the WHY. It helps them think about what they're understanding and what their next steps might be. Student reflection also helps the T see depth of understanding and misconceptions. #MTedchat
A1: student reflection connects them to the learning in a way that is much bigger than finishing an assignment for a grade. Being reflective means they’ve connected and can find room for improvements as well as taking pride in what they’ve done well #MTedchat

Reflections help students see where they are at in the learning process. It also allows us as teachers to see who has the ability to reflect and who doesn't #MTedchat
A1: Reflection in the classroom gives students the opportunity to grow and understand their thinking process. I also believe that it also helps to master content with deeper meaning. #MTedchat
A1 reflection is a life skill. If I’m attempting a new skill or trying to fix something around the house I need to be able to reflect & see what went wrong or what went well & what I can change. I also think it’s good to reflect on relationships as a social skill too #MTedchat
A1 Reflection gives Ss the chance to think about what they learned & why it matters. It allows them to make more connections, too. Also gives Ts the opportunity to check understanding/msconceptions/etc

Reflections help students see where they are at in the learning process. It also allows us as teachers to see who has the ability to reflect and who doesn't #MTedchat
Q2: How do you engage your students in the reflection process? Does technology play a role? If so, share any specific tech tools that you find effective for student reflection. #MTedchat
A1: Reflection gives the students a chance to show off just how much they know! It also allows teachers to check on each student, and make sure that they are understanding what they are supposed to. #MTedchat
A1: Reflection, and metacognition in general, helps learners become more self directed. Practicing these skills encourages retention of knowledge and the ability measure growth and set goals. #mtedchat
Q1 Reflection is an important part of the student learning cycle. Why? What are the benefits of creating opportunities for reflection in our classrooms? #MTedchat
A1) reflection helps both teachers and students understand where they are and what they are learning about. Knowing where a student is at when teaching is super important and it helps the students figure out what they know and need to know. #MTedchat
Love the 'why it matters' part. Yes. Many of our Ss get in the routine of 'doing school' without much thought–unless we build that reflection time in. #MTedchat
For example when students have a conflict or one hurts another’s feelings etc I’ll ask what can you do to make your relationship right instead of just having them apologize. When they make a poor choice I’ll ask them what that would do differently next time. #mtedchat
A2: I try to visibly reflect in my work as an educator. When others see and hear how reflection can help the growth process it adds relevance. As a classroom teacher, I used writing journals, interactive notebooking, and blogging to teach reflection through questioning. #mtedchat

A2: Currently have a group of various aged Ss recording plans and reflections of their behavior on the playground - they choose how to record the reflection on their iPad to have a record to look back on. Knock on wood - all have done great at recess the last 10 days #MTedchat
.@AmandaRapstad was also talking about reflecting on behavior. So valuable. Really helps our Ss identify and understand those behaviors. Then they can work on making shifts. #MTedchat
Q3: Reflection often opens the door for feedback. What are the benefits of feedback for our students? Share any specific tools or strategies you use to engage students in the feedback loop. #MTedchat
A1 I engage Ss in reflection through discussion, writing, conferencing etc. Also love using tools such as @Seesaw
to help. Also include Qs for Ps to ask Ss in my newsletters #MTedchat
Q2: How do you engage your students in the reflection process? Does technology play a role? If so, share any specific tech tools that you find effective for student reflection. #MTedchat
A2 I love tools that allow Ss to use video as part of their reflection: @seesaw, @Flipgrid, @educreations. We learn so much when we can see/hear them explain a concept. And most kids love recording themselves! #MTedchat
Hi my name is Molly Huber. I am currently studying Elementary Education at the University of Montana Western! I am excited to be apart of this education chat:) #MTedchat
A2 we have reflection woven into so much of our day. Ss reflect on games in math, during reading and writing conferences, we also use @Seesaw and google classroom a lot. #MTedchat
A3 Feedback allows students to engage in respectful discussion/voice opinions/respond to feedback. It also helps me to reflect & grow as an educator #MTedchat
Q3: Reflection often opens the door for feedback. What are the benefits of feedback for our students? Share any specific tools or strategies you use to engage students in the feedback loop. #MTedchat
Ss need to hear all sorts of feedback from teachers and peers, this is a life skill, then they need to use it to improve themselves. Think how much we do this daily as educators #MTedchat
Last year, my daughter's Gr4 teacher had the kids do a *daily* reflection in a Google Form. It was a great way to gather quick reflections about academics, SEL, etc. They rated their behavior and how on-task they were in class. #MTedchat
A3: Feedback is another way that makes learning visible for students. Instead of simply a mark to indicate an error or success, feedback is a way to coach specific skills. It humanizes the learning cycle. It can give actionable steps for improvement. #mtedchat
Q3: Reflection often opens the door for feedback. What are the benefits of feedback for our students? Share any specific tools or strategies you use to engage students in the feedback loop. #MTedchat
A3 love, love, love doing activities/writing etc in Google classroom. Ss send in their work and I put comments on it asking questions if there is something they need to work on or to provide feedback for writing. It’s faster and I can provide more feedback when typing #MTedchat

Welcome, Molly! I just followed you...Looking forward to learning with you! Please let us know if you have any questions ;) We are truly accessible 24/7 (the beauty of Twitter ;) #mtedchat
A3) students need feedback to let them know if they are on the correct path. But in my opinion the feedback needs to be positive. If we give negative feedback then the students will not want to listen to the feeback given #MTedchat
Q3: Reflection often opens the door for feedback. What are the benefits of feedback for our students? Share any specific tools or strategies you use to engage students in the feedback loop. #MTedchat
A3: Feedback allows for students to learn what they can improve on, as well as what they are already good at! Constructive feedback is always great.
#MTedchat
Yes. And to add: the research tells us that feedback needs to be timely, specific and actionable. There are so many wonderful digital tools that make immediate feedback so easy to provide! #MTedchat
A1 Reflections play a huge role in student learning in our classrooms. It is important for students to reflect on what the learn in order for us to understand the knowledge they pertain from each lesson. Teacher reflection also play a major role in bettering each lesson!
A4: As admin, and as teacher, I use surveys a ton. They encourage both reflection and all voices/perspectives. Most of our grants, Title 1, Title VI, 21st Century all require community voice. GREAT opportunity to have everyone help build the instructional program. #mtedchat
A4: The most important step in the survey process is to share out the trends and outcomes... What changes did you make and why? That tranparency honors the time for reflection people took when adding their voice. Powerful. #MTedchat
A2 I think journals, think-pair-share, and the 3-2-1 strategies are wonderful reflecting tools to use with students in order for them to grow and learn from their peers as well! #MTedchat#EDU370
A4 When Ss reflect on their learning, and Ts respond, the learning becomes personal and more meaningful. These connections are so impt for Ss. I want my Ss to know that their voices matter. Their thinking matters. #MTedchat
A4 sharing parts of our day through Seesaw and our class instagram has helped us make connections. Even though I don’t post nearly as often as I like Ps still love seeing what we’re up to & use it to start conversations with their child. #MTedchat

A4 b) To connect families, I think @seesaw is an incredibly powerful platform for authentic sharing. Ss can reflect and even teach their family members. Families can experience what 21st C. learning looks and feels like. #WinWin 🎉 #MTedchat
A4: 1st step to building the connections is to make people comfortable with feedback process. Encourage risk taking and the growth that comes from trying new things and taking action on feedback suggestions. Not seeing feedback as a bad but an opportunity for growth! #MTedchat
Wow, what a powerful way to include the greater community in your school community. Building relationships *and* sharing what school is all about in a meaningful way 🙌 #MTedchat
A3 Feedback is a powerful tool for a teacher! It helps them understand who understands as well as gives the teacher an idea of how they can improve their lesson. It is important for the students to have a voice in their education. The teacher needs to be open to change! #MTedchat
A5 @seesaw for learning content and instagram for just our day to day routines and anything really. I like instagram since it’s a platform a lot of parents already use. #MTedchat
As a teacher *and* a parent, I ❤️ Seesaw. It's the BEST when I see my child, sharing her learning, or collaborating with a peer, in the middle of my work day. #MTedchat
A5: From my time as a teacher, I still love a strong website with a blog (GSuite). Our school site also has Facebook & Instagram. All can be used to connect out to community. Class blogs are great for coaching dialogue. Love @seesaw and @flipgrid#mtedchat
Your last point: reflection & feedback give Ss voice in their learning journey. We must listen and honor them. This means making changes to our instruction to meet them where they are! #MTedchat

I'm using IG more and more. Twitter is mostly for my professional growth and collaborating with my amazing PLN. But for connecting with families and telling our story to a wider audience, we have to go where *they* are: Instagram & Facebook mostly. #MTedchat
A5 In addition to @seesaw, I am also a big fan of student blogging. When I go back to the classroom, this is something I will definitely explore. And what a powerful way to give Ss an authentic writing audience! #MTedchat
Q6: Reflection is also important for us as educators. Do you feel you have adequate time to reflect on your teaching? How can we make more time for reflection? #MTedchat
I am so fortunate I had to do ton of this during student teaching so it taught me to do it as I work out, shower, talk to people, I do it constantly! #MTedchat
Q6: Reflection is also important for us as educators. Do you feel you have adequate time to reflect on your teaching? How can we make more time for reflection? #MTedchat
A6 I wish I had more time for this. I do reflect quite a bit but sometimes the day is just so fast paced that by the time I can sit with my thoughts and reflect I’m exhausted. #MTedchat
This is spot on. And again I think it’s the same with our relationships. I tell my Ss if I ever hurt their feelings or they don’t like how I’ve handled something in our relationship that they can & should tell me. If we’re going to give them voice it needs to be all around
A5 Classdojo is a wonderful tool to connect students and parents to learning! It gives students and voice and keeps parents updated with their work in the classroom by photos and videos! #MTedchat#EDU370
A6: I'm always trying to find ways to build reflection time into daily practice at school. Most staff meetings (weekly) we begin w/a 'high & low' activity where everyone writes a current challenge & current success. Small bit of time, but leads to constructive talk. #mtedchat
Q6: Reflection is also important for us as educators. Do you feel you have adequate time to reflect on your teaching? How can we make more time for reflection? #MTedchat
Do they have access to Google Sites? Start with a class site, make a page for each student to use as a blog? They can be added as collaborators... #mtedchat

I love @seesaw for these same reasons, PLUS, you can empower your Ss in posting their reflections and work. (And there's no tracking of poor behavior–which I'm not a fan of, personally.) #MTedchat
A4 It is important for teachers to take reflections from parents and students as an opportunity to grow and excel in their teaching strategies! #MTedchat#EDU370
A6: try to write in my gratitude journal daily but like everyone else - the day flies by, I’m exhausted, and I’m proud to be in bed by 10 (if and when that happens). Need to make time for it - and to celebrate the positives! #MTedchat
I started my fifth graders (and first the year I taught that level) with a photo blog. It was a great way to introduce reaching an audience. They could then learn to comment on one another's photos (less threatening, typically, then writing). #mtedchat

That concludes #MTedchat for this week! Thank you for joining the conversation!
‼️Challenge: Invite an educator in your community to join us for next week’s discussion.
A7: Selfishly focusing on finding balance. I've often talked about it, but tends to be just a lot of talk. I am my best professional self, when I'm healthy mentally and physically. #mtedchat
