Hello there, Brian from Salisbury, MD
A1 that summer slide is real!
A1: to keep the momentum going
A1: Summer reading allows students to continue quenching their thirst for knowledge.
It's always impressive how well teachers can multitask!
A1: Summer reading is important because in order for students to continue to become better readers, they must READ!
A1: Prevents the summer slide and gives Ss the opportunity to expand their reading beyond "school work." https://t.co/WPUXK82Idw
A1: I talked to my kids about all of the book discussions I expected to have when the new yr begins in the fall!
A1: To travel the world and beyond!
A1: rdg is important. Over the summer even more. keeps the brain active with use and helps the student to improve reading levels.
A1: To build on strategies learned in school but MOSTLY - is for FUN and CHOICE! Time for wild readers to fledge...
A1 To keep in the habit that we work so hard to develop during the school year
prevent summer idea slide, get ideas and feed the soul!
A1) Reading keeps the brain muscle growing strong!
A1: Hopefully, Ss have reading momentum (from a strong year of reading in class!). You don't want to lose that! Lifelong Readers!
Are you signed up?
EDCAMP LAKE COUNTY ILLINOIS 12/3/16 Saturday at Carmel Catholic High School https://t.co/tegYj3KVdm
Hi! I'm Liz from MN. A1: Summer reading continues to keep kids engaged in books! .
I want to start summer book clubs at our public library. We need to utilize such a great resource.
No. But I expect them to come and chat with me about what we have all read over the summer!
A1: Allows for that summer time reading where kids can sit and read for a long time
Hello, I'm Robin popping in late - 4th grade in Deland, FL.
That's great that u keep that connection into the next year. My Ss leave for the middle school. 😢
A1-Summer reading for me helps grow me professionally, update me on latest children's lit, & allows me to decompress personally!
A2: No... but I lent out many books to over 10 students for the summer
A2: No, local library does & promotes at end of school visit. Today!
A2: No, but this is something we are looking into for the future. Would be interested to hear from schools that do!
A2 Students receiving Title I svcs, yes. Others, no
A1 It is important for continued growth , but also they may grow a love of reading by doing it for pleasure
We dont run a summer rdg program through the school. Our library does & we sponsor a little library outside the school 4 students
school libraries are open daily in June. The public library is open all summer and we have a mobile library " The Little Red Bus".
A2: Unfortunately, we do not. I think local libraries with book clubs is they way to go.
A2) Our school sent out teacher created reading promotional videos to students but no set program.
A2: My school doesn't. That's why I made such a big deal about being ready to chat books- My old Ss will be sharing w/ my new Ss
A2 Our rising 6th graders are required to do summer reading before middle school
Love this idea! Maybe I could do this through my Edmodo alumni group
Who is all at the school to open the library in the summer?
Don't run a prog, but open our library 1X week 4 kids 2meet, check out books, & use library resources.
A2: Our reading teachers launched a cool Google Classroom Book Club around one book (No Talking) for incoming 5th graders.
Do you have a link to share hide videos? I would love to see one.
A2 No we do provide free books for them to read and keep
That is a spectacular idea! Maybe we could even do a Ss twitter chat! Best book recommendations from last yrs Ss
I like this idea! Want to investigate this.
Opening the school library also gives time to build relationships with more school staff.
A2 No summer reading program here only books for Title 1 students.
Love that you did this for kids. Too many kids do not have access to the amount of books they need or want to read.
A3, no, but I do think that they should read books at their level.
A4: Unsure; So many times seems to kill the joy
A3: Lists with suggested books can be provided, but students need to be given a choice as to what to read.
That sounds like a worthwhile effort or even a Google Hangout.
A3 No. Students should be able to read what interests them.
A3 No. I do think our local libraries do an excellent job trying to get kids reading.
A3: Summer reading as well as school yr reading should ALWAYS be student chosen books. Choice is the key to finding books Ss love!
Too often, kids get caught up in reading the hot book du jour, and don't really engage in the text the way they should
I would make them public but need the teachers permission 1st. They emailed them to their past students parents email.
but if they are "caught up in reading".....
No, I don't think it should be a requirement; students should have a choice. Have to find intrinsic motivation.
We also spread the word 2 our rising K's. They see books are tops in their new school
Joe Eyres from SF Bay Area here! Long time no see!
A3: I say NO! Maybe invitation to read a particular book and lots of encouragement and opportunities to read what THEY WANT.
Completely agree! ❤️ https://t.co/xpZE0bGlI3
A3: Summer reading as well as school yr reading should ALWAYS be student chosen books. Choice is the key to finding books Ss love!
A3-I think they should have personal choice! Could be an array of books to choose from perhap the annual state books-
A3: At young ages, allow for choice. If you must require a title, make it only one title. Let them love reading by getting choice.
A3 school is for structured reading. Let kids read what interests them outside of it.
A3: Most at risk kids have trouble reading so sometimes just reading any books that the students like is a great thing
A3: I did have my Ss suggest to me what they thought I should read over the summer!
they should still have reactions to the book, and not just let it go by...
A3: I love the idea of Ss recommending books for summer to other Ss rather than letter or e-list from the school
A3: not required. Just don't lose skills/ interest programs at library
A3) Reading is best when books are picked out by kids. The power of choice!
We've had success with one anchor book to center a convo around and then all the others Ss choice. https://t.co/pCSniOgVTt
A3: At young ages, allow for choice. If you must require a title, make it only one title. Let them love reading by getting choice.
Thank you! You are very kind, my friend!
A3: you might ask them to read a 4th of July book, Father's Day, flag day.
A5 Our libraries do a great job. This year the incentive is a pool party.
A4: Young readers hours. Section dedicated for ES students.
I would like to be a moderator in July for
A5 The schools help promote student participation before the kiddos leave and send info. home about summer slide
A4 - Our does a fantastic job with summer reading programs! Our Book Mobile also provides local access to books for kids!
A4: Love that came to our school to promote the program! I hand out flyers and email parents too.
A4: Our district is so spread out many Ss don't have access to the library. I've always wanted to try https://t.co/bdH2Uwtmgm
A4: Register for reading program; meet criteria, get prize - a book! Love this instead of pizza or...
A4:Our library holds summer read aloud programs + provides students with "challenges” they can complete for prizes.
Should say A4! Getting ahead of myself ;-)
A3 Required - no. Encouraged and celebrated - yes!
I do! Mostly horror books and mysteries! Those were our favorites this year!
A4: The local library does a great job working along with the school to help the students with reading programs.
little free library is an awesome program and our kids LOVE it!
This is good; Searching for #6 was big when I was a kid
sends a stellar rep to speak to kids do book talks. Amazing summer program!
I would love to hear more about your experiences!
You'll have to share some of your favorites. I know my past Ss loved Skeleton Creek! Pretty creepy!
A4 they have a great summer program for children. Free - transportation can be a barrier though.
We loved "The Ghost of Graylock"
A5 Getting Ss to set reading goals.
My Ss loved Mary Downing Hahn this yr!
A5: Start reading a book kids want to read aloud, but don't finish it! Encourages them to go to library to find out how book ends.
A5: Book talks and signing kids up for or other sites where they can build their own reading tribe.
A5: Towards the end of the yr I had my Ss start making recommendations to me and to our class for summer rdg!
My Ss loved horror this year too! The Thief of Always was a huge fav. https://t.co/027av32GBZ
I do! Mostly horror books and mysteries! Those were our favorites this year!
Mine too! We did "Deep, Dark and Dangerous" as a read aloud!
A5) My fav is the Character Banquet/dress up & act while dining on book based foods while staying in character-promotes titles
A5: I encouraged my Ss to read Book #1 in several different series during May. Now they're hooked & want to read rest of series! :)
A5: keep up book talks & lists of "To Read"; show how to check local availability online & rec continued use of Follet Shelf
That's cruel - lol! 😂But probably very effective. :-)
It is...but I love when then come back next year and tell me about the ending! : )
adding it to my list! Thank you!
My kids were crazy for the "Infinity Ring" & "Red Rock Mysteries" series books
Have Ss make a list of books they want to read over the summer. Keep account live so they can share reviews/suggestions
This sounds amazing! I want to know more https://t.co/CXiUV0HlJF
A5) My fav is the Character Banquet/dress up & act while dining on book based foods while staying in character-promotes titles
A5: If we go back to the last question and work along with the public libraries.
A5: having Ss make video trailers for their favorite book
A5-I loaded my students down w/books b/c many do not have good access! Talked about what I would be reading!
A5 I *wish* I had gone over to talk to 4th grade classes abt summer reading. Maybe it's not too late for some of you!
A5: I encouraged Ss to borrow as many books as they wanted to for the summer. I said it's a great excuse to get to see them in Aug!
A5 the public library comes out to talk with students and we have a school assembly for our summer reading challenge.
A6: Send home information to parents about local library programs, let students checkout classroom library books for summer
This is an awesome idea! Do they tear off the title/author of the book?
Kristin from California joining & trying to multi task!
It's their fav character (nonfiction included).Give a quick speech &then answer dinner ?s in character while eating.
Q6 I feel w/the talk of public, school, and little free library, we all are doing a gr8 job setting Ss up for reading success
A6- Book swaps at end of summer-hit up thrift shops/yard sales& give books to students to take home-replenish Ss if able during sum
A6: Many of my books go missing at the end of the yr. I share that fact with my Ss- and then it comes true...
A6: I've heard of some schools opening the library once per week. :-)
A6: Many of Ss have online access; I promote digital check-out through local library & use of schl subscrptn to Follett Shelf
A6) I joke with my district that I need 2 drive a book bus.I have so much appreciation for people who do that.
A6: I am meeting with my Ss next week at a local park by their MS and we will talk books
That is a marvelous idea!
A6: We did a digital book bingo with multiple choices and ways to share books they have read or are reading.
A6: our Ss have access to overdrive which has tons of books online which they can access over the summer
Check out They are so awesome! Busy all summer!
A6: my district just started this refurbished a bus to take hot lunch and books to students during the summer
A6 The Little Red Bus - free books delivered to kids!
A7 Ss would have access to online libraries and able to participate in online book clubs.
Using tech to facilitate a "book club" with students. Trying twitter or even skype. Could be interesting.
A7- My school district is hosting a summer reading program w/book chats tied to Todays Meet. Ss can win prizes.
A7) Last night I learned from the incredible how she uses to talk books and other stuff of course. :)
A7: Makes it easy for students who have devices to get new books. My library offers ebooks as an option to check out!
A shared Google doc or folder would be great also!
Wow this is truly amazing!!
A7: Connecting via Twitter, Instagram, or other Social Media. Book Clubs in Google Classroom.
A7: Creating online engagement (TW, Google+, etc) can help kids stay connect and increase reading engagement.
A7: I am trying to snapchat the books I am reading this summer and trying to encourage Ss to do the same
Gotta run! Thanks for recharging my batteries!
Another librarian and I are trying to connect our students with a google classroom
A7 I tweet out what I am reading on Twitter
A7 I tweet out what I am reading on Twitter

Cool idea ! Snapchat seems to be the hot social media platform now - lol! https://t.co/xKmp5NiUxG
A7: I am trying to snapchat the books I am reading this summer and trying to encourage Ss to do the same
A7 gmail through GAFE and school reading initiative on website.
Cool way to integrate snapchat! Snapping books with your Ss
The tchrs who run it post a Q every week. And each chapter was read by a diff. teacher and the video posted as well.
