What are some of the new routines?
Thanks Shira! Actually napped this evening-that's the only reason I'm awake! 10pm here!!
Let’s get started with tonight’s topic: Sharing the “Best of” Coaching Tips/Resources
Q1 What are your best tips for coaches just getting started in their roles?
Yeah; I live in NY; time slot is not the best for us east coast morning owls:) Glad you are here!
I could use someone to help me purge all the "junk" I've accumulated over the last 20years! https://t.co/3m7nhEsaiG
Mandy, first year IC in TX. is Ts asking me to work with them to purge excess materials and focus on organization.
Great to see you! I'm excited about staying connected to my friends!
LOL Awesome! I”m by nature a purger; but learning to hoard:)
We set up a more structured reading workshop with colored clocks to help kids manage time
A1 It was important to work on relationships first and not feel hurt if some don’t want to work with the coach.
We've been purging old materials in my office. It is a good feeling. Offices being remodeled over summer.
Just adding onto the question: I would love to know about how to get more buy-in when a teacher-leader-coach
A1: build relationships, have lots of conversations, be true to your core values, know who you are
I'm a morning girl - is more my speed!
A1: Be patient, ask questions, build relationships, network with area coaches
- Great that teacher saw the need to change up the environment to support the focus.
A1: Get on the same page with your principal about your role and how it will be shared with staff
What are some of the things you do to work on relationships?
Early post!70+ apps, to 20 by P, screened w/4 question phone interview in forms, 10 finalist interviews. https://t.co/luZJiMpTkM
Congratulations! So exciting to welcome new educators. Can you share insights for hiring well?
Teachers that I DID work with were my best advocates. https://t.co/3sSy6V3lnF
Just adding onto the question: I would love to know about how to get more buy-in when a teacher-leader-coach
Interesting. What have been time management challenges?
What are your core values as a coach?
A1. Build relationships with Ts. & identify what your role is or will be at your school
A1 Read the literature, talk to others, and don't be afraid to mess up because you will!
Yes! This is the way to start a year off right! https://t.co/H736vZD006
A1. Build relationships with Ts. & identify what your role is or will be at your school
Not spending enough time reading to self and then transitioning to centers
Our teachers are doing great work! It's nice to know the focus in May...instead of August.
What are some ways you build relationships?
Looking for reasons for lack of buy-in and addressing at a system level is important.
Wow! That's great Barbara. Sometimes it can feel like a daunting task to try to fill new positions!
my core values in coaching stem from my core values in life. Be honest, take risks, be kind, stay true, value others
I try to be visible and available. Not always for coaching but listening and finding out about Ts lives. https://t.co/MPeVjoZkfZ
What are some of the things you do to work on relationships?
A1. Develop rapport with teachers and teach some lessons for them highlighting resources and technology.
What are some reasons you've noticed? I'm having trouble figuring that out.
I agree! Messaging is so important for initial success
Hi Amy here. Inst. coach from KS. Joining a little late. Success: seeing Ss engaged in lesson after coaching T in procedures.
A1: Hey everybody! I've missed you! BE HUMBLE! Help folks organize their rooms. It builds trust.
A1 Allow yourself time to acquaint yourself with teachers and support their school year start-up.
People are hesitant of the unknown. Lack of buy-in can mean they don't understand the full scope of the coach's role
Good for y'all! We've also been interviewing and looking for the just-right fit!
being visible is important, those quick conversations can build so much trust.
Sorry I'm late! Rashida - Division Level Instructional Coach from Fairfax, VA
is great! Hasn’t worked in my schedule recently though, but I do love the energy to start the day
Ah, transparency. Thank you
It took me a few years into education to understand the value of a few minutes spent chatting with colleagues!
A1: Tip = Go slow to go fast. Take your time, build relationships, be strategic, access your impact
How do you balance humility but still making yourself a resource?
A1: Listen more & paraphrase others...for like two months, before inserting an opinion. People will feel heard.
A1: Better Convos book by Knight! Ask good questions and listen, suspend judgment, help prioritize to reduce stress/workloads
go slow to go fast is so true.
Ts really need to see how coaching works and how it can help w/students. Seeing is believing.
definitely needs to be some strategy
This my favorite part!! https://t.co/XPUV8n15i0
It took me a few years into education to understand the value of a few minutes spent chatting with colleagues!
Q2 What are your best technology tools to help you as a coach?
5:30-6 AM educator chat bfc+breakfast club I haven’t been in quite a long time
I work to get to know all if the Ts I work with. I make myself accessible. https://t.co/ctPYqSicyP
What are some ways you build relationships?
A1b: It is also important to keep vision and mission statement at the forefront of thinking and action
yes! What is the goal, how will we get there, how will we access the impact
Yes!! My P & I are team 4 sure! Fri I meet w/2 P's I'll work w/ next yr to plan/get on same page https://t.co/cB4qExAfCP
A1: Get on the same page with your principal about your role and how it will be shared with staff
A1 build relationships with all staff members, use mistakes/struggles as learning opportunity!
This is on my to-read list as soon as I get a few free hours!
the key is paraphrasing their thoughts, having them say "that's right" & THEN offering something
Sorry I'm late. I've been prepping for interview tomorrow
A2: twitter, google+, gdocs, facebook, my PLN is wide and deep.
Reflective listening is critical in coaching and building relationships https://t.co/xFtfFQod3f
the key is paraphrasing their thoughts, having them say "that's right" & THEN offering something
Happy to see you. No tardies counted. :)
👋🏽
Joining in from CA.
Hoping this chat is relevant to experiences I've been trying to process.
we are reading it at work, as well as the book nights-great insights :)
I'm from Fairfax, but live in Saigon Vietnam now! Lit Coach Cheers!
I agree with . Listening has been the most important skill for me this first year. https://t.co/vO0AqAzMMj
A1: Listen more & paraphrase others...for like two months, before inserting an opinion. People will feel heard.
A2: Google Classroom allows me to share docs easily, access from home, and Ts can collaborate ❤️it!
A2 I rely on Google Calenda, Google Tasks, and Notes Plus for time management & organizing notes.
A2 Video can be a helpful tool in our work as coaches.
It's going to happen. Maybe I'll start tonight!
I agree. This holds true for admin working with staff as well. We all have to remember why we're here.
A2: I use screencastify along with Google Slides to showcase strategies and tips in classrooms from across the district
A2: Twitter is another tool - can we build capacity in our Ts to personalize their learning, engage with other educators, etc?
A2 We are investigating EdThena a video coaching platform. Very intuitive to use and can now track coaching data.
Listening with empathy is so important https://t.co/cD3uE4kTyY
I agree with . Listening has been the most important skill for me this first year. https://t.co/vO0AqAzMMj
A1: Listen more & paraphrase others...for like two months, before inserting an opinion. People will feel heard.
I spent the first 2 weeks visiting every classroom and leaving a positive, hand-written note.
Our larger IC group (Superintendents, Principals, Coaches) are planning a book study w/ Better Conversations
A lot of times, Ts just need to process. Ask good questions and provide support and follow-up.
I CAN'T BELIEVE I FORGOT TWITTER!
Screencastify? I'll look it up!
A2 I am just beginning to videotape Ts teaching and watching together so we have the same perspective. Powerful tool.
Q3 What are your best tips for scheduling, especially for coaches with multiple roles?
Video just doesn’t lie. https://t.co/br6ufcU9Yp
A2 I am just beginning to videotape Ts teaching and watching together so we have the same perspective. Powerful tool.
A2. I'm working on a blended approach. In person v. Tech to support Ts
I'm missing at tonight. Are you up?
YES!!! https://t.co/JUQKiafLn4
A lot of times, Ts just need to process. Ask good questions and provide support and follow-up.
Absolutely! Our region is using & will continue to expand use of video as a coaching tool-we use https://t.co/WzP76pkhfb
A2 Video can be a helpful tool in our work as coaches.
Hi folks, Chris dropping in from Melbourne, Australia.
I found that teaching model lessons allowed Ts to trust me, then follow-up with resources.
I cannot imagine no Twitter, trying to get more Ts on Twitter especially elementary Ts. https://t.co/3pUkgOYeT6
A2: Twitter is another tool - can we build capacity in our Ts to personalize their learning, engage with other educators, etc?
another idea Collaborative Learning Visits - everyone goes to observe (not evaluative) & then discuss! Great learning
Hi Chris. Great to see you. Lunch break? Happy Thursday to you!
😳For a moment - iDidn't think iHad TechTools. I💭iMissed an App.
A3 Be flexible with what you can & firm with what you can't. Always schedule more time than needed for tasks because interruptions
I'm very lucky to have Sup & A.Sup who not only support but participate in IC work! https://t.co/FG5RE73fsS
I would love to get our upper administrators involved in that type of learning. Trying, but no such luck so far.
A3: commit to your commitments!
iAlso like Evernote. I find it's like a miniPortfolio to keep track of Mental Notes.
A3: I would be lost without my electronic calender, access it from multiple devices.
A1 Advice to new coaches #1 - focus on relationship building & role clarity first - as others have said - go slow to go fast
A3 When I was at multiple sites I tried to keep a clear schedule of what day I'd be where. Also sent out weekly newsletter.
A3: Letting Ts know when you will be in a building and you would like to drop by to see classrooms (at least initially)
Too much innovation can be overwhelming to Ts. Listen, and guide toward a focus w/ T until they're ready for more.
Does anyone have an electronic calender that Ts can self schedule with you?
I'd provide a sample of my newsletter w/schedule, but my website got hacked. :( https://t.co/dJfgimoVXn
A3 When I was at multiple sites I tried to keep a clear schedule of what day I'd be where. Also sent out weekly newsletter.
This was something we did this year, too.The debrief in the self-learn instead of evaluation was key. https://t.co/L0cZSke4kD
another idea Collaborative Learning Visits - everyone goes to observe (not evaluative) & then discuss! Great learning
Sorry I'm late! Actually working on a presentation about coaching with video as we tweet!
A3 Set priorities each week, schedule accordingly, and include scheduled time for documentation, gathering resources, etc.
A3: scheduling opps happen anytime, anywhere-always have your schedule handy. I carry my iPad everywhere; share iCal with P
I've used Thinglink to do some neat things w/fb & i think using the strategies that Ts could also use is important too
AWesome read! I need to write a review of the book for MiddleWeb https://t.co/Lq9F3jQuKx
Our larger IC group (Superintendents, Principals, Coaches) are planning a book study w/ Better Conversations
I agree! Too much for some, but enough for others. Have to access where they are and go from there
I don't use mine that way, but friends do. They have a make an appointment app that works well.
I try to preface convos as a learner..."I'm trying to learn more about...What are your thoughts on..."
A1 Advice to new coaches #2 - don't underestimate the importance of developing coaching skills https://t.co/tJGrjkcA6s
A3 We've been having success with using Mail Chimp to communicate with our Teacher Leaders. Could be used in a variety of ways.
Non-teaching period before lunch now that timezones have changed. Spinning a few plates in the background :)
I saw that you asked for help with the site. I'd think you could just contact your website host, right?
I can see myself doing that..building relationships first makes a huge difference https://t.co/PPfaTrnU0v
I found that teaching model lessons allowed Ts to trust me, then follow-up with resources.
Video - start small. Ts can video self and just watch. When comfortable, they can share w/coach.
You mean, like differentiation?! Adult learners have been a new animal for me this year!
We find it helpful to share calendars with staff so if Ts are planning a lesson they know IC availability.
Yes. Contacted them. Of course that comes with a price tag to clean up and protect. Weighing options.
I actually videotaped myself then had Director of IC"Coach" me-wanted 2 experience what I ask my T's 2 do https://t.co/GB8bjkhQRd
A2 I am just beginning to videotape Ts teaching and watching together so we have the same perspective. Powerful tool.
Q4 What are your best tips for building strong relationships with teachers?
A2 and for my own , TEKS app to easily access state standards. My phone for pics!
A3 I have learned to put everything on my electronic calendar. I need to do better at setting weekly goals/priorities.
Absolutely!!! My calendar and journaling the week helps me stay focused bc it's easy to get side tracked https://t.co/7WWhRivQeL
A3 Be flexible with what you can & firm with what you can't. Always schedule more time than needed for tasks because interruptions
A4: I try to build success through Ts and their actions by showcasing great work and explaining its worth
- Yes. Great idea for a coach to "go first" in the video taping. Admin could go first, too.
A4: Listen, listen, then listen some more, always with empathy. Keep in mind all people are creative, resourceful & whole.
A1 Advice to new coaches #3 - beware of falling into teacher/fixer mode - that's not coaching! https://t.co/FjGL6XxUOH
IMO must build trust first. I walk the walk-have videod self & been coached-share that w' T's "I'm Real" https://t.co/gSLFoekrk8
wondering how you build the trust to video or is that the expectation and norm?
me too! Then I color code it 🙈 Don't judge me 😝 It helps to stay organized when working w/several teams and Ts
Yes! Yes! Yes! https://t.co/SDkucZmHcq
A4: Listen, listen, then listen some more, always with empathy. Keep in mind all people are creative, resourceful & whole.
A4 Helpful if coach takes active role in school - committees, fund raisers, etc... Need to be seen as an equal.
The client has the answer. You just help them see that.
A4 Our gives out "Tech Savvy" awards to staff who step outside the box and try new things.
And take your calendar when you go to the bathroom. Always hear, "Hey, quick question..."
I use outlook and can share my calendar with Ts and admin. They can see windows of open or busy. It helps https://t.co/97BsuTotAX
Does anyone have an electronic calender that Ts can self schedule with you?
definitely need to be open while keeping a growth mindset
Since our Ts aren't ready yet, someone sug. I record myself coaching to share/start.
It helps as a coach if YOU yourself have been coached. Trust.
A4 I'm an advocate that coaches benefit from also having a coach. I've loved virtual coaching coaches!
Yes@RachelTassler Value each Ts strength. They don’t have to teach like I would. Style is personal. https://t.co/hmd9zWEfVA
A4: Listen, listen, then listen some more, always with empathy. Keep in mind all people are creative, resourceful & whole.
My P taught lesson in my class-we videod him.My ASup videod herself running meeting https://t.co/aol3PEUS5Y
- Yes. Great idea for a coach to "go first" in the video taping. Admin could go first, too.
You keep writing what I'm thinking. What am I thinking now? 😜
A4: Enter every conversation with an intent to listen and learn and follow through consistently
Role clarity is an ongoing challenge. I have become more flexible, but still need to stay focused on main campus goals.
A4: T's must see leaders as human. Become vulnerable in front of T's. Admit failures and shortcomings. Join in the fight
It was very eye opening - I experienced the feelings of vulnerability that I am asking my T's to expose themselves to
A4 Be confidential. Speak positively. Eat lunch in the lounge. Laugh together. Be honest. Take risks.
Thanks for sharing these!
A4 Accessibility, co-teaching, modeling, reliability to follow up helps teachers know that you are a partner in the work.
reminds me of Cognitive Coaching!
Yes. Good idea to "go first." Reflect on the value of the video. How it helped you grow.
Our ICs and admin do a lot of learning walks, but I'd love to see the Ts involved. They would benefit immensely!
A4 Strong relationships are underpinned by trust & respect - clear 'terms of engagement' help https://t.co/x1wKZD6guf
Many times, I have gained a client by eating in the lounge.
Q5 What are your best tips for building principal/coach working agreements?
A4: build relationships by being visible and present alongside Ts and Ss
putting yourself out there helps to build trust. Cant ask Ts to try what we're not willing as coaches. https://t.co/Mhzw0aqtS8
Since our Ts aren't ready yet, someone sug. I record myself coaching to share/start.
A4: Smile, genuine listening, be available, keep convos confidential - earn trust then relationships come
When we get too busy to eat with others, we are too busy. We have to take time for ourselves & for relationships.
A5 I have found this set of material helpful with addressing coach/principal working agreements https://t.co/N8KsbgaH46
A5 I have found this set of material helpful with addressing coach/principal working agreements https://t.co/FdoHQ6njZF
A5: I like weekly meetings around the kinds of work I am doing, not T specific. Also keeps the coaching role clear.
I agree. They make more progress when seen as equals, not as an evaluator.
Very true. Thanks for this!
Also have new teachers coach the coach. https://t.co/Kzm6ToMFXY
Since our Ts aren't ready yet, someone sug. I record myself coaching to share/start.
I have a hard time doing those things during the school day. It feels like cheating.
So wise. Self-care is so important &too often overlooked by educators.
This Twitter chat is so helpful to me asI prepare . Thank you all
Love this idea! https://t.co/KB252hfvF3
A4 I'm an advocate that coaches benefit from also having a coach. I've loved virtual coaching coaches!
I learned so much from this chat that made me be more successful than I would have been otherwise!
Great way 2 start Sonya! We need 2 let our vulnerabilities show if we want T's 2 trust
Yes! Too much time at directive end of the conversational continuum = low ownership/empowerment
Preach. I rely heavily on this community and my to train. I've read so many bks about intentional conversation.
Let me know if you'd like more info on what I offer in terms of virtual coaching.
Q6 What are your best tips for working through coaching cycles with teachers?
A6 Best type for coaching cycle - start small and make them a priority. :)
😊Spent many years as the last to leave the building, but now I try, also helps with timely updates to Ts & admin.
A6 The pre-conference is so important to identify goals and develop common expectations. Don't rush it!
A6: Try to as much TOGETHER as possible. It is their classroom-plan together, teach together, reflect together.
We take pics of Ts with their certificate and put it in the S news and in the weekly school newsletter
Our admin were not invited. Visits were not to eval. but to learn. I joined staff in small group visits. https://t.co/h3SsWXpRcd
Our ICs and admin do a lot of learning walks, but I'd love to see the Ts involved. They would benefit immensely!
A6: Having a menu of options for ts, listening to what they want and then building a clear plan from there.
A5 Role clarity is vital here (but tricky depending on context) - Principal's rationale might not match philosophy of coaching
Yes - so important to make sure "partnership" is a focus!
A5 apply self derermination theory. Encourage autonomy, build a sense of competence and connectedness
A5 Be open, honest, and clear about goals and the plan to get there. Then be willing to adjust the plan.
A5 Dialogue between Prin & coach essential to ensure alignment of purpose of coaching then this needs to be shared with Ts
A5: Have a structured conversation and revisit numerous times over the yr. Learn how ur admin work, their priorities, expectations
Coaches and principals must be on the same page to be effective. Clear communication/expectations are vital!
Developing skills in areas you identify. Practicing w/principal or a coach on the side. All about goal setting.
A6: Be transparent about the cycle and make sure Ts understand it as well. Everyone needs to know the goal
A5: openly sharing vision and solutions clarifies perspectives and approaches-get on same page experiencng the work
A6: Establish a clear goal for the cycle that can be measured--student-centered or teacher practice
Q7 What are your best tips for coaches, teachers, principals… to relieve stress that these jobs can bring?
Building trust is a must! Keep it real! https://t.co/rwMWqE6UUc
A4: Smile, genuine listening, be available, keep convos confidential - earn trust then relationships come
A7: I workout 6 days a week at 5:30 am. I also surround myself with positive people at work and in my personal life.
I agree, but find this is so hard to get in and plan it. How do you get it in? https://t.co/yy2KtwREQ0
A6 The pre-conference is so important to identify goals and develop common expectations. Don't rush it!
Perfect ideas. Exercise is so important - as are positive people that will help us learn and grow.
You sound like you really know how to get Ts to open up + feel comfortable sharing.
A7: Vent to other coaches, not Ts and admin.
A6 With Ts establish what evidence of growth looks like - when setting goals, helps to know what we’re working towards
Q8: What other aspects of coaching would you like tips and resources for?
We don't start until it happens! I don't plan the cycle until we meet, so it's a priority.
A7 Create a culture of support with an instructional focus and the rest will fall in place with little stress
A8: How do you bring new coaches along and keep growing your current coaches?
A7: Unlike your tech, YOU need to unplug to recharge.
Having a true confidant is important. It been a benefit to my virtual coaching of coaches that I didn't foresee
I need to duck out early-my bed is calling! Thanks for a great chat tonight!
A7 Reward others; Reward yourself; Celebrate other; Celebrate you. A smile, a candy bar, a talk go a long way .
Very important. We can get too connected these days.
I got derailed reading this document. Great info.
Chocolate goes a long way. :)
How do you deal with teacher reluctant to be coached? I have some ideas but interested in yours
I agree! I haven't had virtual coaching experiences but I can see how that is helpful because you're really removed
A7 Focus on the positives.
A8. Middle school core area resources
A7 Identify priorities and say no to distractors when you can. Take a lunch break each day to be with people. Laugh at work.
If you'd like more info, let me know. My website is down. DM me your email if you want info.
Has helped so much to be coached as a principal. Our students deserve for us to be coached
This was a challenge for me this year as a first timer, but I'm excited about the possibilities for next year!
A7 Coaches need support - it can be isolated & is emotionally & intelectually demanding. Get a coach - reach out to PLN
To me it comes down to figuring out why they are hesitant to the idea of coaching.
I work with new-to-campus teachers more than the rest, but I do PK-5. I try to be there for everyone I can.
Same! My list is already a mile long for 2016-2017! https://t.co/Ayd1XXHDdd
This was a challenge for me this year as a first timer, but I'm excited about the possibilities for next year!
A7: Drinking! ahah! Balance is crucial, have hobbies that can flood your mind with other thoughts
Any first year is a learning year. We learn and grow in any position.
Great sharing. Sandman is calling. Looking forward to archive to jot down new ideas.
Hard to hear about shortcomings. Puts Ts in vulnerable state. TRUST important in building relationships https://t.co/Ri8z7BlmvS
To me it comes down to figuring out why they are hesitant to the idea of coaching.
A8: Any suggestions for effective coach candidate interview questions?
Yes! I gravitate to chats, like this, to grow. These chats, help fill my cup so that I can be better. https://t.co/61DL3yugaF
A7 Coaches need support - it can be isolated & is emotionally & intelectually demanding. Get a coach - reach out to PLN
Q9: What are some take-aways for you from tonight’s chat?
We love our sister chat - !
A9: That it is always helpful when I can join . Excited to follow new colleagues!
Depends on why reluctant-is T certainty or T uncertainty getting in the way? https://t.co/nfI88VZY6N
How do you deal with teacher reluctant to be coached? I have some ideas but interested in yours
A9 I am not alone. Thank you PLN!
Sorry guys - gotta go! Lunch duty calls... Enjoy the rest of your evening/week :)
Hope you get to eat your lunch as well! .
Glad you were able to join tonight - or for you this afternoon:)
I like how you phrased that: Teach certainty or Teacher uncertainty. Both can be stumbling blocks
- 1st Mon of the month. Early AM for us in the US. Chris - fill in on exact times. :)
A9: The importance of support for coaches, not just teachers. This is crucial in our survival
Q10: What topics would you like to see in future chats?
Both have very different needs, requiring different approaches! https://t.co/KTajQ1WyB7
I like how you phrased that: Teach certainty or Teacher uncertainty. Both can be stumbling blocks
So true; and so wise; you have me thinking now
What areas do they feel they need to develop and how will that help them as a coach?
Campus is using a profile to devel. Qs. What characteristics do you want in a C? What Qs would help you see that?
Next week will be hosting a Teach to the chat on how coaches can help teachers finish out the year strong.
Ex. want to see focus on growth? Ask "What have you read/learned recently that changed your practice?"
A10: Assessing impact, content coaching, strategies/resources for collaborative team visits
Follow the movement and for more info https://t.co/cP1kggabme
