The idea for @onedchat stemmed from a conversation between Allison Fuisz and Amy Bowker in the Spring of 2014. They noticed a gap on Twitter where an Ontario-based education chat was concerned. After several conversations and a vision in mind, @onedchat was created.
The questions for tonight's chat are pinned to our handle. Please remember to use #ONedchat in your responses so you can share your amazing thoughts readily w/ others.

Hello! My name is Jessica and I teach a grade 3 class in Regina, Sask. My favourite math symbol is # - used in math and for tic-tac-toe. π #ONedchat
A1: We are currently using the Prodigy math app in our classroom. It is free for students and matches up to the math outcomes we are working on. The students get to make cool characters too. #ONedchat

Prodigy is a great way for students to "play" at building their math understanding. Love the initial diagnostic included to determine where to begin. Closes gaps and builds understanding.

A1: I've been seeing a lot of classrooms using Dreambox, Khan Academy, Quizziz, and lots of different gaming websites, like the the student-favourite... Prodigy #onedchat
mPower by TVO has been a favourite (and new-ish) math game pulling from the Ontario Curriculum. Great for those kids that finish up other tasks early or for an engaging sponge activity. #onedchat
Been playing with using Mathies.ca Learning Tools and capturing student thinking via Screencastify. Video record student thinking and share with T via Google. Game changer!
#onedchat
The new Mathies apps (and of course the chromebook-friendly mathies.ca tools) are AWESOME! My Ss use one of the 8 different apps daily. We screenshot thinking for sharing or saving in an e-portfolio (or even a Google slidedeck). #onedchat

Definitely! It's a great resource for teachers when differentiating work for their students. Questions at different grade levels with just a click of a button #ONedchat
A1: Using Plickers or Kahoot to "digitize" EQAO mulitplie choice questions. Great way to practice deductive reasoning, identifying distractors, and working through rich, vetted, curriculum-based content in a fun, interactive way.
#onedchat
This has been a big focus of our TLLP. When choices in tools are available, can Ss self-select according to their learning styles or strengths? Can a tool compliment their thinking, or enhance an area of need? We curious about everyone' thoughts on this. #onedchat
A2 Our class uses some of our Mondays as a reflection day within our "Math in My World" class to share their math learning and how it connects to their lives using a format of their choice (print/digital, audio/visual ...) #OnEdChat
A2: Bansho consolidations as a class, showing group work on chart paper, writing learning reflections on a digital forum (Google Forms), video recording students explaining their thinking/strategies... so many great options for sharing math thinking! #onedchat
#onedchat . I was asking myself that today as Ss struggled with a concept, yet seemed invested in trying to find a way to share their understanding (right or wrong).
Love the idea of video/audio recording bansho. Great documentation to revisit, and reflect on to plan next instructional moves (whole group, small group, individualized instruction)

I love the sound of this! It targets the common student question: "When are we ever going to have to use this?"
How do you run this in your classroom? #ONedchat
...and this is a great lead-in to using Google Forms to gather this data to address Ss needs as well. Even better - eventually getting Ss to be the ones building the Forms/quizzes for other Ss. #onedchat

Just thought of something... Would you ever show your class one of the recorded Bansho presentations so that they could self-reflect on their own ability to use mathematical terms and language? #ONedchat
With forms there are great options such as marking to give Ss I stand feedback as well as options to go different questions based on response #ONedchat
I think this would be an effective way to revisit and revise thinking around misconceptions. Also would be a great way to have students build further connections between new strategies/models/representations that had been introduced in subsequent lessons.

It's amazing how important the oral response is. I now know that I should have been providing more time for students to 'talk like teachers' when sharing their learning. In primary the writing can be such a barrier sometimes. #onedchat
A3: One challenge I would anticipate facing is having students resort to what they know... staying stagnant in their ways of communicating their understanding. We must teach students to embrace and utilize choice #onedchat
A3. My challenge in my G3 room is scaffolding the way choices are offered. We usually have lots of modelled lessons on an app before it becomes an option for sharing. That being said, kids pick up new apps a lot faster than I do! #onedchat#teachtheteacher
Yes! Our project is investigating whether regular self-assessment & self-reflection leads to increased depth of understanding and as a result, student achievement.
My TLLP colleagues use Flipgrid in amazing ways. The pause feature during recording means Ss can fine-tune their delivery and even share their work on camera. Students ask daily to use it.
They think they're youtubers. #flipgridfever#onedchat
Hello I just joined. I am Trish. The Promethean board with a variety of apps. Ss can choose to make a game to show their thinking, Code with Hopscotch. Create a poster, IPages poster, etc.#ONedchat
Welcome, Trish! Students gamifying their thinking - so engaging! I'm looking into use Apple Clips for a quick, but effective way to show thinking. Can sharing a math concept look as cool as a music video? Yup! #onedchat

Agreed. I have reflected on this a LOT - is it ok if it is the tool that helps them share the best (my one student loves Flipgrid and it offers visual and audio functions to support his learning needs)? #OnEdChat
I'm really impressed with how my 3's are self-selecting tools so far. It's a learning curve, indeed, and we need to nurture Ss in understanding that out of the box thinking is sometimes exactly what's needed. #onedchat
Data collection is in the early stages/we are noticing a marked increase in engagement. S<3 using @Flipgrid to record their reflections~also noticing develop't in math LA and vocab that Ss are use to articulate thoughts/feelings/goals.

A4: self-assess beyond checking their answer at the back of the book is challenging as they often look to the Ts as the sage on the stage in the math class #OnEdChat
A4. The team has been focussing on rolling out single point rubrics as a way to scaffold reflection, goal-setting and self-assessment skills. Here's a few samples on our project Site. #onedchat .https://t.co/AtwwQmsLBL
A4: Even something as simple as a traffic light reflection at the end of a lesson is a great ways for students to think about their own abilities, and for teachers to guide their future instruction #ONedchat
Our class is exploring the use of the single point rubric as part of our TLLP to self assess & create next steps. It's amazing to see their assessment so closely aligned to my assessment of their work. We are now working to connect our next steps to our self assessment. #OnEdChat
What's neat in my grade 3 room is that habits haven't really been formed yet. Imagine working in a building where self-assessment is engrained from the get-go? #onedchat
A4: self-assess beyond checking their answer at the back of the book is challenging as they often look to the Ts as the sage on the stage in the math class #OnEdChat
It's changed how I assess completely. Students start to quickly become accurate in assessing when the criteria is introduced at the beginning of a task and they know they'll be reflecting. #onedchat
We are also building math sites using google sites (uploading own work, videos they find that help with their own understanding, ...) Ss are adding their own bitmojis for some added fun and personalization! #OnEdChat
A5. In primary I want students to own their e-portfolio. Simple is key. We're currently using Google Slide decks as holding places for their digital sharing. They add the date on each slide and with a click they upload their thinking. Works on iPads or chromebooks. #onedchat
A5: For our pattern unit I had the students take photos of the patterns they made with our classroom iPads. As the students progressed through the unit they could talk about how they could challenge themselves to more complex patterns. #onedchat
A5 My Ss are also each building their own math site using google sites (uploading own work, videos they find that help with their own understanding, ...) Ss are adding their own bitmojis for some added fun and personalization! #OnEdChat
Access to iPads makes sharing so dynamic. Photographing their manips and using a mark-up app means their concrete tool thinking is never lost. #onedchat

A6 When one of my Ss ' parents messaged me on REMIND to say that her daughter had "THEEE BEST MATH CLASS" the day we did our metric olympics! #ONedchat
Working with the Arts really allows you to see how Ss are applying their Math skills. Dance, Visual Arts, Drama and Music. When Ss use Math in the Arts then I know they have consolidated learning #ONedchat

I have to say good-night! Thanks #onedchat for the opportunity to connect and share with other educators across the province & thank you @Jay__Dubois@inspirelearners for guiding our conversation tonite! So many great ideas to try!
When you hear engagement, laughter, excitement, and collaboration in the math classroom, you know that something is going right. Math games and cooperative learning experiences help to make this environment a reality! #onedchat
