A1. We strive to embed them as part of our work (teach growth mindset and resilience during PBLs) but we also set aside time for intentional SEL work . #eduAR
A1: By making SE learning a priority. In our district we emphasize connection b4 content, relationships b4 rigor, empathy b4 apprehension, investing b4 testing, and reaching b4 teaching. We believe all of this leads to higher academic achievement. #EduAr
A1: SEL can be embedded in everything we do! All content, procedures, transitions, etc. are full of opportunities to model and enchanted social emotional skills.
#EduAR

A1: You have to purposely plan for SEL by giving teachers the resources they need and allowing them the freedom to think outside the box . Might be a lesson during morning meeting ,an integrated lesson in ELA or part of a service project . #eduAR
A1 Getting to know the students and through relationships, being intentional in planning and making #SEL a priority, lots of ways to get students collaborating, building peer relationships and it can be easily layered into curriculum and daily activities #eduAR
I also think we need to be sure we differentiate between empathy and sympathy. We can be empathetic and still maintain high expectations. When we become sympathetic we begin to compromise our students' futures by letting their present situations lower our expectations. #eduAR

A1: I intentionally focus on building relationships with my Ss! I learn their story & find ways to try and meet their social & emotionally needs! It’s a priority to help them be successful (beyond academics) each day! #EduAR
A1: Taking the time to know students and their needs. Partnering with those who are willing to mentor students, looking at school culture and climate and having conversations about if we are being equitable in our services for all learners and their needs. #eduAR
A1 Relationship building the first few weeks of school! We incorporate other SEL time throughout the year in daily lessons or special activities. We have weekly mentoring groups, too. During book talk (or number talk) Fridays, I have Ss write positive notes, etc. #eduAR
Q2: Technology has made it easier to connect to each other but the world seems to be unconnected. How can we change this starting with our students? #EduAR
A1: You have to first accept that the social emotional needs of the students are real and come with them every day to school, whether we want them to or not. #EduAR

A1) Academic needs can’t be met until social-emotional needs are met. So, we put relationships first in the classroom , and support them through remediation, enrichment, and student assistance programs. #eduar
A2 We create some opportunities for them, with #pbl I have been able to connect my students globally and using tools like @edmodo@gosynth@Buncee@padlet#eduAR

Completely agree. But yet the system of education doesn't see it that way. I'm confident that like-minded people can begin to turn this around. Great point. #EduAR
A2: Take time to listen to students. Hear their stories. Sit with them at lunch. We often forget that learning is reciprocal. What we learn from students is just as important as what they learn from us. #EduAR
A1 There’s just nothing more important than building real relationships with students and connecting learning to their hearts. When you can do that, everything else will fall into place. #eduAR
A1: Yes! Humor and Authenticity. Be vulnerable... I trust others when they are real faster than when you "advise me" they need to know we are going to get into the middle of the mess of life with them. #eduAR
A1: You have to first accept that the social emotional needs of the students are real and come with them every day to school, whether we want them to or not. #EduAR
A1: Make time to visit with your students. The 10X10 strategy is a great way to do that. 10 minutes a day for 10 days talking with a student about anything and everything. It breaks down walls and opens up a authentic relationship. #EduAR
A2. Tech should only be used when you can deepen learning; when possible- develop the human potential (communication, collaboration and empathy). #eduAR
A2. Put students in a position to communicate with one another face to face. Model it for them throughout the day. Show them the importance of relationships! #EduAR
A2: Model it! Make eye contact and smile, speak to everyone we pass in the halls. My goal: Never let anyone by me in the hall without a wave, a smile, and sometimes a high five or hug. Make it a part of the culture. #EduAR

A2: In each staff room at our schools is a poster that lists every child in the building with a place to mark a check mark next to - Would recognize this child in a crowd, Know something personal about, have had a convo with, and know their passion. #EduAR
A2 The lack of connection is how we have lost our civility. We are no longer empathetic to our neighbors. Instead, it has become all about us. We push reading & writing, & we should. But, let's spend as much time on speaking & listening. That's a start #EduAr
A2: In each staff room at our schools is a poster that lists every child in the building with a place to mark a check mark next to - Would recognize this child in a crowd, Know something personal about, have had a convo with, and know their passion. #EduAR

A2 I love using tech for student collaboration: quizlet live, collaborative slideshows, partner projects, and the like. I try to avoid individual screen time as much as possible.
#eduAR
A2: We start our day with a family meeting. We greet each other and share. We learn about commonalities and differences during this time. It starts the day with connections being built. #EduAR
A2: For me this starts in my home w/ my own kids. Putting down the phone, shooting hoops, playing board games, reading stories together, chatting about life over dinner.... Same at school. Chat with students and staff. Smile. Ask open ended questions. Listen reflectively. #eduAR
A2: I believe in the power of having a connected classroom! #globalcollaboration is a passion of mine!! I provide opportunities for my Ss to connect w/ others around the 🌎! They’ve learned so much from the people we’ve virtually met & it sparks their curiosity & empathy!#EduAR
A2: It's how we use the technology;is it to push out & put things on people or is it a two way cyclical communication? Are their multiple modalities to connect? It's not that there is connection but that there is access;Have we asked Ss how they want to be connected with? #eduAR
A2 By giving students time to talk to and listen to each other. By modeling and practicing good communication skills and helping students understand the power of words. Writing thank you notes, journaling, writing compliments. #eduAR
A2: Take a chance & connect with people worldwide. For instance, I regularly email selected questions my students' submit to the composers of the music being learned. #eduar
A2: Balance - the skills on proper etiquette need to be taught with technology skills. We can’t place technology in front of them and expect they ‘know’ what we expect of them without teaching them. #EduAr
Love this idea...because when I run into a student from our school in Walmart , they react as if I am their teacher...even if my room is down the hall from theirs. Why shouldn’t we do the same as teachers...treat them all as our students? #EduAR
Q3: It's been state that 1 in 5 teenagers have had, have, or will have some sort of mental illness. Given a lack of services and funding in schools what can we do tomorrow to fix this? #EduAR

A2: It's funny that we say we are too connected when it used to be that long distance phone calls were expensive and people would budget to tal to one another once a month; Now we can connect more often with one another... it is how we connect and if we choose to #eduAR
A3: Connecting with kids costs zero dollars. Empowering kids costs zero dollars. Encouraging kids costs zero dollars. I'm not saying this will combat the mental health issues entirely but it's certain to help. #EduAR
Wow! Imagine using this to find the kid that hasn't had any connections made that day or week! It happens unfortunately and this would be a great way to correct that! Isolation would decrease tremendously! @bethhill2829 we need to add this to Rm 205! #EduAR

A3. Educators must remember that relationships are most important but learning new strategies that allow us to support students in needs is essential. #eduAR
A3: Be intentional about connecting. Notice who looks sad, angry, frustrated, anxious. Notice the happy ones too, because some can hide things well in that invisible backpack. #EduAR
A3: I'm saddened by this statistic. I wonder if it comes from the bronkeness of their environments. We can pour into them healthy behaviors, unconditional love, high but reasonable expectations and encourage resilience and grit; be models and real examples; be vulnerable #eduAR
A3 Connect! I think it is vital that every child has a network at school, including at least one adult he/she trusts and connects with during the day. Helping build networks of support will help Ss know they are not alone in struggles. #eduAR
Absolutely! Be human. The one thing we tend not to be is ourselves. We don't always need to put the teacher hat on or the principal hat. How about the human hat? #EduAR
A3: As an academic instructional mentor, I spend a great deal of time helping new teachers look for these nuances and reflecting on what is causing the behavior as opposed to the behavior itself. #EduAR
Sad to leave the chat but I have to get the girl home for bed. Tomorow is All-state choir auditions and be need her to be rested. Hope to catch up on the flip side! Have a great Friday. Thanks for leading @Supt_Jordan#eduAR
A2 ~ Technology, although used to connect, causes isolation. Whether in lower elem or middle school, students need time for face to face ‘circle time’ to build those communication skills. Before they can collaborate, they have to know how to communicate. #EduAR
A3: be visible, get to know and connect with Ss, call them by name. Connect with parents/guardians, build those relationships so that if/when a crisis occurs the base is established to assist with the situation. Relationships matter! #EduAR
Q3: It's been state that 1 in 5 teenagers have had, have, or will have some sort of mental illness. Given a lack of services and funding in schools what can we do tomorrow to fix this? #EduAR
I’ll build time into my plans for learning things like empathy, perseverance and how to deal with emotions. I’ll model kindness and we’ll practice “doing community” in my classroom. #EduAR
A3: Your Ss should know that you SEE them! They need to know & believe that you care about them. Look for signs & provide support for all Ss! Be that person they can count on. #EduAR
A3: Tomorrow? Engage them, ask them questions, smile, fist bump, elbow bump, call them by their name, laugh with ‘em, struggle alongside ‘em, and recognize each has their own story. #eduar
A3: If we don't have the funding to help train teachers then we have to do it on our own. Use the resources you have...special ed teachers, psych examiners in your district, counselors, and family services in the area. #EduAR
A4 Great question! Last semester, I had students write thank you notes to any adult in the building to show gratitude. I also started a "shout-out" notebook that was passed around. I try to greet others in the hall. Most days, a colleague and I have a quiet Bible study. #eduAR
A4: Much like we do with students. Connect with them. Empower them. Encourage them. Allow them to take a mental health day. If our teachers are not healthy mentally, its hard to expect our kids to be. #EduAR
A3 Love them! See them through the eyes of my heart and tell them how beautiful they are and how much they mean to me. Notice when they are worried, anxious or hurting and fill them up with hope and encouragement. #eduAR
A4: Showing gratitude for ALL they do. Acknowledging their contributions, setting all aside to listen to them, affirming them, offering treats...#EduAR
Same friend! We are getting ready to mail our shipment to you next week! I can't wait for your Ss to see their creation come to life! So excited! #EduAR

A4: We need to listen to each other and support. Vicarious Trauma is real. Teachers become overwhelmed by what their students experience or have experienced in the past. Listen and empathize.
#EduAR
A4.b I try to notice the little things in conversations then surprise people, like my custodian's favorite cheese that he never buys himself or the librarian's love of houndstooth. Attention to details shows you care. #eduAR
A4: We have Trauma Informed Tuesdays. Our counselor sends out a weekly @Smore & we focus on SEL of our staff! Spa-like items, infuser in the lounge, adult coloring pages, & a form to fill out if they ever need a break to breathe! #EduAr
A4: We do coaching cycles. There is a level of transparency in our building. We can reach out to a ¨guru" for advice and through the coaching cycle learn and grow together. It revitalizes us and breaks down the natural stress that builds in teachers! #EduAR
A4 As a Coach, I am the "go-to" for venting/listening/processing, "hey-Peg-I've-got-a-question," "hey-Peg-could-we?" "hey-Peg-l-need-you" My "academic family" used to be my Ss; they are now my colleagues. I'm good w/ that. I baked cookies for my family for tomorrow! #EduAr
A4: Smile, Assume positive intentions (thank you, ALA), acknowledge & highlight excellence n others, encourage others trying ANYTHING that might benefit students. And grace for running n at the last minute because she forgot to defrost her car windows. (Oops, that was me) #EduAR
We have a wonderful collaboration with the Martinsburg Initiative who, among other things, proves excellent staff development on vicarious trauma. https://t.co/09iGWXr2xH#EduAR

A5. I did a “get to know you” survey with favorites of the staff so I could surprise them with small treats! Favorite gun, candy, color, Sonic drink... #eduAR
A4: Listening when asked not to reply but to understand. Offering meaningful advice if asked and being a shoulder when need. Supportive staff stays together! #EduAR
We establish a culture of support, learning, and emotional strengthening. We are a family and each of us know that we can reach out for support without judgement. There are no words to describe the good that does for a teacherś soul! #EduAR
Yes! It has been a huge addition to our adult learning and professional development. Love @SweeneyDiane student centered coaching model. #SCcoaching#EduAR#CEunited

A4: As a leader you have to be real and transparent . Connection and relationships are key . Giving adults time to breathe together and chat over coffee, checking on them first thing in the morning to ask , “ do you have everything you need today ?” #eduAR
A3: Talking about our own personal struggles will start to eliminate negative stereotypes of mental illness and give students a connection to adults who can help guide them to betterment. #EduAR
A5- Having relevant, authentic, honest conversations about SEL needs for Ss, and collaborating on how to actively and effectively support Ss in SE health and growth. #EduAR

Wow that is an excellent idea. Would be a big undertaking but if we broke it down by grade level it’s definitely do-able. We could check it late in the week and be more intentional with who we seek out. Love it!
A5: We have started a program called IMPACT - Integrating Mental health, Physical health, and Coordination of Care Together. We have essentially brought our local clinic to the school a few days a week to meet with and screen struggling students. #EduAR
A4: We have a SWAG CART that we push around for birthdays, random days, and other times to give teachers a pick me up and thank you complete with a coke, sweet tea, candy bar, chips, pistachios, etc! #eduAR
Q2: By giving purpose to that technology other than just placating children. Helping them to connect with students around the world and helping them collaborate digital with other students. #EduAR
A5: The best way to support a child is to help them find their interest and drive. It builds confidence and purpose within their life. Use your community members to bring those interests into your school. Give Ss exposure to those experiences. #EduAR
A1: By getting to know them personally and not just academically. Taking an interest in their life outside of school. Building an authentic relationship with students shows them we care about them as a human being not just a student. #EduAR
A5: We have Communities in Schools, Project @ProjectAwareBC , and Martinsburg Initiative (https://t.co/09iGWXr2xH) working in our district, trying to reach as many students as we can. #EduAR
Q6: For Q6 let's help everyone grow their PLN. Give a shoutout to some folks that have provided you inspiration and solutions to help address SE learning in your school. #EduAR
Yes! Seriously the best pick-me-ups we have ever gotten were from a hot chocolate cart, drink cart and snack cart. Day made when I got that knock on my door! #EduAR

A6: For me, I have found @Joe_Sanfelippo videos for Innovator's Mindset and @gcouros blog have helped me make sure my well-being is taken care of so I can better guide others to help our students. #EduAR
A5 By inviting the community into our schools and making them feel welcome. Give them opportunities to serve and know our school family. We are on the front line of the future of our community, nation, and world. We need all hands on deck! #eduAR
A1: I try to learn their first language, just several words/phrases and then apply them when speaking to Ss and parents...this goes a long way 😊 #EduAR
A1:By taking the time to build meaningful relationships with students and understanding who they are and what their values are. We must know who the whole child is if we are to meet the needs of students academically, socially and emotional.
Join @nortnik@Lindsey_Bohler and me next Thursday, 2/7 as we welcome @Rdene915! She will lead the convo on teacher creativity. You don’t want to miss it!

They’re experience, kindness, knowledge & fresh ideas have helped me a lot this year. Mrs. Bohler has pushed me like no other person has in my teaching career. I may not always seem thankful, but I am.
A3: Show love, forgiveness and kindness with a smile, 👋🏼 or hug. I gave a S a granola bar today & you’d think I gave her 🥩 from @theranchanaheim! #EduAR
