A weekly chat covering topics related to teaching with a global perspective. A rotating cast of guest hosts include education experts and influencers. A must-follow for all educators who would like to open their classroom to global opportunities! Hosted by @HSingmaster and sponsored by @AsiaSocietyEDU
Hello! Checking in from Colorado. My goal this year is to encourage others to fail forward. Can’t wait for a great chat tonight! #TeachSDGs#globaledchat
I'm Heather Singmaster from @AsiaSocietyEDU and your #Globaledchat organizer. My new year's resolution is to use no plastic water bottles at all in 2018!
@SaraWhitaker54, working as a consultant @participate, trying to make a difference in global learning for all students. New year-participate in more Twitter chats-connect with more global educators! #globaledchat
Hey #Globaledchat! I’ll mostly be watching tonight (bedtime with two sick kids 🙃) but I love the topic! Matt from MI. HS teacher. I’m going to be fluent in Spanish this year! At 43% in Duolingo today!
Hi everyone, Happy New Year! I'm joining tonight from snowy Vermont. My #oneword for 2018 is Focus. And one of the things I focus on are the #SDGs#globaledchat
Hi #vted chatters, I'm Erin joining for the first time from Norwich, and I'm a global education consultant. Hopping in between this chat and #globaledchat tonight.
A1: I can't say this is the first one I would focus on in my 2nd gr classroom. But interested to hear how others do. I can be convinced. All SDGs are important. #GlobalEdChat
A1: One of our social studies outcomes is to explore how the community meets their needs and wants. Also, how wealth is created and distributed. #GlobalEdChat
Yes, I was a regular for the last couple years, but thos year have a commitment at the same time on Thursdays so it has been harder to chime in! #globaledchat
A1: one thing that may be useful is finding out what industries are already booming and need skilled employees. We have a new-ish guide on how to use labor market info that may be useful to those at the state/district level: https://t.co/iDWob4PhxH#globaledchat
#stem opportunities in the work force is a big topic for us. We encourage real engineers and scientists to speak to our school to encourage the field. #Globaledchat
A2: Specific standards were developed for six Career Cluster areas that are likely to experience the greatest need for green workers: Ag, Food, & Natural Resources; Architecture & Construction; IT; Manufacturing; STEM and TDL: https://t.co/0Ev6M1vCRA#Globaledchat#globaledchat
Kids choose something (career) they are interested in. HR teachers and guidance counselors work with them to arrange out of school experiences with adult volunteers. We track their progress with check-ins and record everything with a Google Sheets doc.
A2
While it is important to help build the economy of a nation, it can come at a terrible cost - look at strip mining, deforestation, water pollution, etc. All good for economy, not good for environment.
Have to consider ALL stakeholders.
#globaledchat
A2. I once had a teacher in Iowa tell me it's hard to get her students to care about the ocean. Ask kids what places/spaces matter to them. The power of place plays a role in how we get students to think about their environment/why it matters. #globaledchat#cte#placebaseded
A2 Do an analysis of pros/cons. Does the economic growth outweigh the environmental impact. Is it a trade off one should be willing to make? Why/why not. Great discussion could evolve here. #globaledchat
A2: I have students who are currently creating a business plan and they are researching environmentally sustainable and friendly business practices and incorporating them into their business. #globaledchat
A2: Hotly debated is right. Outside of the classroom, I'm seeing a clear political and partisan divide. But, more often than that, in the classroom I notice that many students take an ethical approach... principle over profit. #globaledchat#TeachSDGs
Interesting chatting about the environment and economics when the US just opened up offshore drilling on all coasts and in Alaska refuge ... money over environment #globaledchat
A3: I normally use online newspapers and mags like the Economist, official reports from institutions like the OECD and independent comments from users on Facebook and Reddit #Globaledchat
The old standby for my students os https://t.co/3L5K7pCNzr World Factbook. I ask them to dissect what drives the economies of different countries. #globaledchat
A3 ACTE has a series of Sector Sheets, quick snapshots of high growth sectors including mention of some sustainable occupations https://t.co/FbcemWP1FX#globaledchat
A3. Researching questions, topics, interviewing people who are working in specific areas, researching job incomes, cost of items have increased over the years. #globaledchat
A4
Everything is about to be impacted by automation. Just saw an article about investment firms using a bot to scan contracts. Only time a human sees them is if the bot detects something abnormal. #globaledchat
A4: 45% of jobs are at risk of being automated! It's higher order thinking skills and lifelong learning that will be needed for success: https://t.co/8nIq4YAnaB#cte#globaledchat
Depends on where we live. Usually automation improves jobs though some attrition happens as industries die. Ag->Industry -> Commerce -> Info -> ? #globaledchat
A4 It is inevitable that there will be impact. I think there will ALWAYS be a human element needed to jobs well into the future. It will always be about people. When or if that ever stops, we'll all feel it in a negative way. #globaledchat
I've had interest via email and tweet about participating in the Global Postcard Exchange next year. Please visit the GPE site https://t.co/GASTEai50c and fill out the form to be notified by email when registration for 2018-19 opens. Thanks for your interest! #Globaledchat
A4: I think automation will make an education focused on collaboration, questioning, and problem solving even more important. Ss will be preparing for more high tech jobs doing things that haven’t been invented yet. #globaledchat
A4
Automation is why 21st Century skills are so important. Gone are the days of having 1 job for life. Ss need to adapt to new situations and needs. #globaledchat
A4) We are preparing students for jobs that are not yet created. I think part of the shift will be towards moderating, maintaining and developing new technology. #globaledchat
Lifelong learning will be (is!) so important. Need to up skill at different times throughout one's career. #CTE needs to be offered at all learner levels. #globaledchat
Innovation generates new opportunities. Tomorrow’s jobs may not exist today. Embrace change! Move #forward Important message to preach in the classroom. #globaledchat
A4: Lifelong learning will be (is!) so important. Need to up skill at different times throughout one's career. #CTE needs to be offered at all learner levels. #globaledchat
A4. Automation is currently taking over quite a bit of jobs now. In the future, most of the jobs will be gone do to automation. We need to prepare Ss for the future to recreate themselves for any type of job.#globaledchat
I don’t think we are completely but we do need to think about what we are doing in a classroom. If the answer can be googled easily then don’t do it. Focus on skills where Ss are working together & solving real life problems. #Globaledchat
NEVER. Not to say it won't be attempted. However, we are not replaceable and our work and impact should prove it! I suppose it will depend on who is making the decisions. Hopefully, they'll ask students which they prefer. I bet it's not the robot. #globaledchat
A4: Entry-level jobs performing repetitive tasks will become scarce with automation. This will have an impact on young adults whom often fill these roles. This will create a barrier into the workforce. #GlobalEdChat
A4: agree with @cheffernan75, most students will have many different careers. They need skills that can translate to any workplace: leadership, creativity, global citizenship, self direction. #Globaledchat#hvpathways
Q5) we don’t know what content students are going to need in a few years down the road. We should be teaching skills like innovation, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking. #Globaledchat
How can that generation be encouraged to see that new ways can still embody the values and meaning they attach to the old ways? #GlobalEdChat#SomethingMore
Don't know about what happens over there, but when we look at distance learning, teachers have already been "replaced" by tutors, course designers and education consultants #Globaledchat
A5: 6 out of 10 hardest to fill careers are in tech fields or require a CTE background. Need the tech AND employability skills (communications, leadership, critical thinking) that we know CTE provides! https://t.co/IP3DCB4rHH#globaledchat
A5. Asia Society does it best: Investigate the World, Recognize Perspectives, Communicate with Diverse Audiences, Take Action. My kids know this system backwards and forwards. #globaledchat
Automation, by design, eliminates workers. Many times those who are replaced by automation cannot afford to move to find a new job ... ask those left in Detroit or any other abandoned manufacturing city #globaledchat
A5. Problem solving, creativity, leadership, collaboration, global citizenship, self-motivated, communication skills, grit, soft skills, etc. #globaledchat
A5: just mentioned them but worth mentioning again. Our school @HVPathways focuses on 5 learning threads: Leadership, creativity, self direction, multiple literacy, and global citizenship. If they master those and only those by graduation we are happy! #globaledchat
I LOVED this article and was going to post it too! Best quote from @CathyNDavidson : “No student should be prevented from majoring in an area they love based on a false idea of what they need to succeed.” @washingtonpost#globaledchat#teachSDGs
In reply to
@hsingmaster, @Google, @CathyNDavidson, @washingtonpost
A5: Non-cognitive, Social Emotional Learning skills. The ability to relate to and work with others in a respectful way is crucial to success. #globaledchat#sel
I should have said shouldn't be replaced. I'm sure it is happening. In an era of shrinking budgets here, it seems too easy for that to happen. #globaledchat
ACTE advocates for a balance of academic, technical and employability (aka professional, 21st Century) skills. All employees will need a mix of these. #globaledchat
There is a lot of contradictory info being divulged. Have to cross data from official sources and local grassroots organizations. The Amazon is just one of the troubles but one that cannot be ignored #GlobalEdChat
A6: We did a career week at our school. Asked Ss to connect to careers across subjects, interdisc. focus. Guest speakers focused on what skills they needed #globaledchat
A6: We have a seminar class staring freshmen year that challenges students to think about their futures and research them while working on SEL skills to be successful. We also bring in people to interview Ss and to talk about their own careers. #globaledchat
Q5: Above all, interpersonal skills and work ethic! Passion, intrigue, and other personal motivations can all be fueled through application and work experience, but interpersonal skills and work ethnic are formed by habits. Sometimes more influential than aptitude! #globaledchat
I think when I go back to school Monday, I'm going to have an aide play a creepy squinty prerecorded lesson on dual screens while I hide a few rooms away because I'm such a powerful educator.
Depends on age group & student group. Many are mature enough to move out of their comfort zone & for others, teacher enthusiasm can direct them to explore global issues beyond their self-interest #GlobalEdChat
I would agree. It almost seems as though companies are falling into the relationship trap. Looking for Mr/Mrs Right to be perfect instead of training & skills for what they are looking for #GlobalEdChat
A5: Flexibility, curiosity, tenacity to figure out what they don't know and how to gather the new skills they need. #GlobalEdChathttps://t.co/nN7SWgg4IY
A5. More from @CathyNDavidson and success @Google : "Broad learning skills are the key to long-term, satisfying, productive careers...It may be social science / arts that contribute to making you not just workforce ready but world ready.” #globaledchathttps://t.co/SIzKufJCJi
A6 Thanks to Asia Society for the development of resources in the Global Competency Toolkit and course in CTE Learn https://t.co/N4c3NOG63a#globaledchat
A6: We also have three #CTE tracks in business and health to support students in thinking about careers and getting training and experience early on. #Globaledchat
A5. Problem solving, creativity, leadership, collaboration, global citizenship, self-motivated, communication skills, grit, soft skills, etc. #globaledchat
A6: There is a lovely little book by Kieran Egan from the mid-80s called “Teaching as Storytelling.” Everyone remembers a good story. This has impacted my teaching and my students’ learning—and their recall—immensely. #mschat
I totally agree! I’ve seen many of my middle schoolers go on to make a significant difference in high school and college! One is even running for office in Chicago! I love to hear what an impact they are having on the world. #Globaledchat
We have a similar seminar class that I teach. It helps freshmen address their beliefs and clear up misconceptions about their prospective careers while providing much-needed direction. I swear by our program... and not just because I teach it. #globaledchat
conversations around skills, curiosities, wonderings, passions, exposure to different trades, ideas, mentoring, old fashioned guilds .... #globaledchat
Does it continue on? We have a junior and senior seminar class that continue the themes. A sophomore version of it exists too, we just don’t have it at our school yet. @UmojaCorp#GlobalEdChat
A6: There is a lovely little book by Kieran Egan from the mid-80s called “Teaching as Storytelling.” Everyone remembers a good story. This has impacted my teaching and my students’ learning—and their recall—immensely. #mschat
A6. Career fair for Ss to explore different careers and also guest speakers are brought into the school throughout the year. The library has a huge amount of information about different careers. #globaledchat
https://t.co/fv8R3VaYX2 is a great resource for exploring the global connections that your local economy has (ie jobs tied to trade and in which sectors). #globaledchat
A7. Our middle school librarian teaches a seminar class that focuses on career prer stuff - resumes, interview skills, selling your "brand", etc. #globaledchat
A7: @OaklandRCS has a great program for all middle school students to help them find out what career clusters they're interested in, and then learn more about programs during a school-wide fair with CTE instructors & students/alumni. #globaledchat
Well, my attempt at two simultaneous chats failed miserably. Looks like I'll be reading the @participate transcript. So many great resources as always. Thanks for moderating @hsingmaster! #globaledchat
A7: During my education degree I had the opportunity to interview Indigenous professionals that use math in their everyday jobs. They are available online. https://t.co/5zj55nGDzY#globaledchat
A7: @UmojaCorp seminar curriculum, tools on @Naviance, push in sessions by the @YouthJobCenter, #CTE classes... I think there still needs to be more choices for tracks available in schools to help kids see their options. #Globaledchat
We send letters of inquiry to local businesses, recent graduates, local universities, and reach out to friends/family members to make sure we include a diverse range of careers and skills during our career fair. #globaledchat
A7 Career Technical Student Organizations can help support career exploration and development, experiences and leadership development https://t.co/n4S37aPZa1#globaledchat
A3 When we create a culture mutually inspired curiosity, it becomes the fuel that flames the fire of curiosity-infused learning ever higher as reading writing talking allows us to grow purposefully as curious learners together. #G2Great
Thank you to all of you for participating in #globaledchat today! We'll pick up the UN SDGs in 3 weeks - have some good topics already planned for the next 2 weeks!
Interesting. The class itself does not. We use MyTenYearPlan which helps track progress for Ts/counselors, but we address job applications, interviews, and college... while they are freshmen. Which is great to preview, but more essential for juniors and seniors. #GlobalEdChat
