#LearnLAP occurs on Mondays starting at 7pm Central Time. Guest moderators and participants discuss topics from author Paul Solarz's book Learn Like a PIRATE.
My name is Cory Colby, a government and politics professor from @lonestarcollege in Tomball, TX, and I am thrilled to have a chance to moderate tonight's #LearnLAP chat!
Welcome to #LearnLAP chat. I am so excited everyone is here and back from the Thanksgiving holiday! Tonight we are going to talk about Showing Up and Showing Off.
I have committed to my students and campus to Show Up and give my best each day and the expect they do the same. I also want to always be Showing Off the great thing we are doing as a community of learners! #LearnLAP
I'm Paul Solarz, 4th grade teacher from Arlington Heights, Illinois. Finally got my snowblower working and took care of the driveway! Of course, now I have to fix the flat tire on it that kept trying to come off! #StupidWinter ;) #LearnLAP I appreciate @EffectualEdu moderating!!!
Q1: When we "Show Up", we are not only in class physically, but we are "IN" the class with our Ss. How do your Ss know you are fully invested into them and the class? #LearnLAP
Zac Junior at Austin Peay State University. Aspiring high school history teacher. Ready to play with the big boys tonight and maybe learn a few things too! #LearnLAP
A1: Ss know you are there when they have your FULL attention. Donât grade papers, answer emails, check the weather, or read the paper while you are with them. #learnlap
A1: When you are at the door greeting them, when you are planned and prepared to teach for the day and when you show enthusiasm for teaching. They need to see it to believe it. #LearnLAP
A1: Ss know you are there when they have your FULL attention. Donât grade papers, answer emails, check the weather, or read the paper while you are with them. #learnlap
A1 My Ss know I am fully invested because I am sitting with them. Inquiring, questioning, and wondering as they are. We are a family built on relationships, growth mindset, and metacognition. #LearnLAP
Q1: When we "Show Up", we are not only in class physically, but we are "IN" the class with our Ss. How do your Ss know you are fully invested into them and the class? #LearnLAP
A1: giving Ss your undivided attention goes a long way. Stop writing the email, stop grading, listen to them, and show them that youâre *there* #learnlap
A1 - Long ago, I got rid of my teacher's desk and decided that I'd always walk around, participate & sit WITH my students while they worked rather than sit away from them, working on other things. They know we're a team & I'm always at their side! #LearnLAP
A1: By remaining engaged even after the "meat" of the lesson is over! Working with students and observing. NOT going back to their desk as Ss work #LearnLAP
Q2: We want our Ss to "Show Up" physically and figuratively every day in class. What does it look like when students "Show Up" in our classes? #LearnLAP
A1: I have just as much enthusasim as the ss, and I encourage them to get out of their comfort zone (physically, socially, academically, etc.) to try something new and LOVE IT!! #learnlap
A1. When your attention is directed towards them the entire time! welcoming them in the door, to the point they are engaged in instruction and activities, sharing and collaborating, working hard to complete activities!#learnlap
#learnlap - Ray, K-8 Math Instructional Coach from Rhode Island.
A1 - Just like adults know who care, students can tell who works hard and who is just showing up to work. Kids can go to class anywhere, but they come to my class for the attitude and the atmosphere.
Q1: When we "Show Up", we are not only in class physically, but we are "IN" the class with our Ss. How do your Ss know you are fully invested into them and the class? #LearnLAP
A1 as an admin I think you do this by actually participating in the classes when you visit or asking them what they are doing. You also take the time to answer questions and visit with them. Build relationships all the time in all you do #LearnLAP
I gave up my desk and it was the best decision ever. My Ss also always hear this is our classroom not my classroom. The Believers are never called Mrs. Epsteinâs class. #LearnLAP
#learnlap A1 Most of my class time is devoted to Ss doing peer tutoring working on their math problems. I am constantly walking the room monitoring progress and helping kids when needed. I spend most of my day LISTENING to learning occurring.
A2: As we say at Romulus Middle School when kids are READY 2 LEARN they have materials, positive attitude, listen to the adult directions the first time and always do your best. #learnLAP#Ready2LearnRMS#BulldogPride
This is so important! I think it's really tempting to sit at your desk and get stuff done while the Ss do, but it makes teachers unapproachable #LearnLAP
A1: To have convos with Ss at their desk (or at mine) to make sure that the dialogue is private and meant just for them. No one person more special! #learnLAP
A2 As an Instruc Coach/Rdg Spec, I work w/ all Ts in all content areas. "Show up" means Ss let me support them; offering suggestions, listening to their ideas, creating conversation of learning. Anything where we learn from each other #learnLAP
A1: I feel that the lesson needs to be engaging for the student for them to feel that I have "Shown Up" for them. Teaching the standard algorithm for subtraction can still be engaging.
#LearnLAP
A1 One of the ways Ss know we are invested in them is that we take the time to talk with them. We do not jump directly into content. We ask about their nights, their practices, their pets. We know them as individuals both in and out of school. #LearnLAP
A2: Students "show up" when they are actively listening and engaging with the teacher. Working with their fellow students in collaboration as well showing that they are engaging and learning #LearnLAP
#learnlap A2 I show this picture to my Ss. ALTHOUGH not scientifically accurate, this does motivate my Ss to TEACH and help each other. The more I hear my Ss teaching each other the higher the test scores.
#learnlap - A2 - I guess we should be asking ourselves - what about our class makes a kid want to show up? Iâll quote @MathDenisNJ - Would you want to be in your class?
Q2: We want our Ss to "Show Up" physically and figuratively every day in class. What does it look like when students "Show Up" in our classes? #LearnLAP
Playing another game of https://t.co/yLZwwYNX41 to practice aller and our vocabulary. At the end of class, they asked me if I would make more for them - I think it was a hit. There are so many different activities - neat. #Frenchistoofun đŤđˇđđ
A2 - In our classroom, we focus on constant improvement & 100% effort. I never expect perfection or mastery, I only expect their best & in turn, I strive to always give my best. My kiddos thrive because we focus on what they can control - not on grades & final products! #LearnLAP
Q3: When we "Show Up" and so do our Ss, EXCELLENCE can happen. What are some examples of things that happen when ALL of us in the class "Show Up"? #LearnLAP
I think i have a different mindset ... the classroom is mine ... mine in the sense that is like my house and I invite the kids in ... while they are there they are like guests/family ... we learn, but it is also like building camaraderie #learnlap
A2: I know when my classes have "shown up" by the engagement in the lesson. I don't want a quiet room. I want my students to be actively engaged in their learning. Lots of questions, lots of discussions, and lots of learning.
#LearnLAP
A2 Ss show up when they are asking questions, when they are self starting, when they are taking a lesson and making it their own, and when they bring their learning home. #LearnLAP
A2 they are engaged and participating. Not just because they have to, but because they are eager to be. They are willing and ready to converse and try new things and just ready to learn or see what craziness we might get into. #learnlap
A2: They are smiling, their eyes are wide open, and you can tell they ware willing to do what they need to in order to learn. Not just a "come and feed me" look (can you say entitled?). #learnLAP
A2. They enjoy hands on learning and activities. They are collaborating and sharing ideas, helping one another if they have problems, and eager to learn and try new things! #learnlap
A2: A student who âshows upâ matches the enthusiasm of the adult in front of them. They too become energized by the instruction. Engagement looks different for all learners but an âah haâ moment looks pretty uniform. #LearnLAP
#learnlap - When we all show up, we are a team and we are all working together toward our common predefined goals. When we all show up, we are all accountable for one another.
Q3: When we "Show Up" and so do our Ss, EXCELLENCE can happen. What are some examples of things that happen when ALL of us in the class "Show Up"? #LearnLAP
A3: Learning more than we ever thought possible through our relationships, trust, and having fun (gasp!!) while we're doing it! Learning shouldn't be a chore. It should be fun and engaging. That's what makes it stick! #LearnLAP
A3: Kids are empowered when everyone shows up. Everyone is engaged in what they are doing and working towards a common goal. All hands on deck!
#learnLAP
A2: Same sign for the classroom as the school and taking the kids to the sitter: we want them to enter (show upđ) much more quickly than they leave. #learnlap
A3: When we all show up the activity often gets extended (or completely off track) and we learn/explore things we never thought we would get to. #learnlap
A3: Organized chaos happens! One moment we are moving around the room, then there may be a paired learning activity, followed by an independent reflection of the learning we just did together. Teaching is like being a talk show host, your audience becomes your cohost! #LearnLAP
New things can be learned. Questions will be asked that will deepen understanding. New ideas can come into fruition once everyone has "shown up". I find it especially special whenever the teacher can learn something new along with their students #LearnLAP
A3: We were doing standard alg for subtraction, and one student was struggling. After she went through her productive struggle, another suggested we watch a video we'd watched to remind everyone about place value. Loved having the student feedback on the lesson.
#LearnLAP
What was the biggest thing that changed when you got rid of your desk? I am considering it but am wondering where I would put my computer and my important papers. #learnLAP
A3. When we all show up...Magic Happens! Students are engaged as the teacher facilitates meaningul learning opportunities. Eveyone collaboarting and learning together! #learnlap
A3: New things can be learned. Questions will be asked that will deepen understanding. New ideas can come into fruition once everyone has "shown up". I find it especially special whenever the teacher can learn something new along with their students #LearnLAP
Q3: Being âPresentâ means a lot more than being their in body - for Ts and Ss. Inspired discussions, progress in learning and facilitation of S led learning happens #learnlap
A3. We grow together as a family /community working together to achieve our goals! The Ss are empowered in their learning with voice and choices, leading in discussion. Also, carrying conversation on btween each other! #learnlap
A3 Example: Ss brought in questions regarding this past election. Fell into exploring gov, checks and balances, and process of bill to law. Ss established their own gov in class and now are crafting bills and discussing them in Congress. #LearnLAP
A3 - We become a stronger group, students begin to think INTERdependently & think of school in a different way. Students become more critical thinkers & begin to mature intellectually. Effort becomes ingrained & slacking becomes unacceptable by each of our standards. #LearnLAP
A4: It might help to tone down some of the cynicism we see these days. Our schools and communities would do well to have less of that and more trust, optimism, and hope. #LearnLAP
A3: took me 2 months to drill addition to 20 for my 6 yr old. i almost gave up until she 'showed up' with me in a more engaged lesson. now she is a pro :) #learnlap
A4: S would be excited to come through the doors, there would be fewer discipline concerns, parents would be happier, staff would be happier, the school would be the bright spot in the community and a place people would proudly talk about! #learnLAP
Hi, the biggest thing when you give up your desk is you have more room. I never sat behind my desk when I had one, but those that did become more interactive with the kidsđ #LearnLAP
Culliope, middle school, NH. A1: I'm lucky enough to live where I teach, so that means I'm "on" whenever I leave the house. I have to show I care at the store, sidewalk, at the lake and at the gas station, not just in the classroom. Knowing families matters. #LearnLAP
A4: I would love a culture where everyone get safe, secure, and confident enough to SHOW UP all the time. It needs to reach out beyond the campus. #learnlap
A4: In my school, not a lot. We all expect each other to SHOW UP every day and to give our students ALL we have. We want the Ss to show up physically and mentally every day!! #learnLAP
Students show up when they know theyâre trusted, their literacies are valued + honored, when theyâre able to use their imagination + agency to make meaning. I saw this in with my final exams recently where students built concept maps to represent their learning so far. #LearnLAP
A4: Everyone has to buy in, thereâs no opting out. Students can pick up when adults (admin included) are not thrilled about something. This type of initiative and culture switch requires training before students start the school year. #LearnLAP
A4 I often see showing up as the first step in a bigger journey. We have to get there first once we do we can grow and build together for the greater good. #LearnLAP
I dumped my desk 5 years ago. We were rewarded with extra room for our collective work and I refined my organization skills. I found I was more approachable because I was not behind something. #LearnLAP
A3: There's a true emotional connection to the material. Something that is missing in many classrooms/lessons IMO. We need to bring that out. Makes creating real change possible #LearnLAP
A4 A campus built in âShowing Upâ is a positive culture. Ss will run to school. If we are not showing up, why we are we teaching? I always ask myself if I would want my own children in the classroom. #LearnLAP
A4 When everyone shows up...teachers and students are wiling to try new things! The tech challenge bellow was a first for many Ts, but in collaboration they found success! #LearnLAP
Students at Kingsgate Elem, w/ help from their phenomenal teacher, disguised themselves as turkeys and provided Thanksgiving facts. Not only will videos brighten your day but serve as example of importance of tech integration in our classrooms. #mpspridehttps://t.co/76GSBlZBmZ
A4: Positive Energy is contagious. Building a campus culture of Showing Up would shift everyone from the mindset of showing up to get a paycheck or showing up to do homework, to SHOWING UP to Learn and Make History.
#LearnLAP
A4. A cumpus of culture of showing up would include inviting community , parents and families into the school all the time as well! Not just for volunteering and mentoring! #learnlap
Tika: is that true for every student every day? I have a lot of students who HATE showing up at school for one reason or another, no matter what my disposition is...#learnLAP
A4b showing up starts the process of caring for each other and creating a culture is bigger than just learning. Pride, community, spirit and mindfulness become a daily part of schh life #LearnLAP
A4: Everyone wants to be there. It's a great place to work and learn. Think about the progress you could make if everyone was on board, feels supported and energized to be at work and in the school. #learnLAP
Q5: "Showing Off" means getting those from outside the class and campus to be aware and engaged in "Showing Up" for our schools and Ss.
How can we reach out to get others to actively engage in "Showing Up" to continuously improve our classrooms and campuses? #LearnLAP
A4 showing up means different things to different people I think it means being in the moment letting students know you care paying attention listening intently genuinely caring about more than just grades including the community and parents in all aspects of education #LearnLAP
I did not even think to ask and I was not approached by adm afterward. Removing the teacher's desk does not impact S learning. I did have to think a little more carefully about work flow but in the end that was an added bonus. #LearnLAP
This is good. Definitely apply this to my classes. Would I want to be in my class? Or another version I use is Would I want my children to be in this class? #LearnLAP
A4 - when students and staff know THEY matter to at least one person in school, it makes such a huge difference. Being fully present and really "seeing" each other changes everything! We can try, take risks and know we are supported #LearnLAP
#learnlap A4 the key is to BE POSITIVE! When you are positive you will inspire others! Being positive also produces JOY. This is my cycle of Being positive and joy. #ItWorks
A1: This year when we set our goals. I set REAL goals right along with my students. I also hold myself accountable for them with my students throughout the year. My favorite goal they are helping me work toward.... push ups! #LearnLAP
Q1: When we "Show Up", we are not only in class physically, but we are "IN" the class with our Ss. How do your Ss know you are fully invested into them and the class? #LearnLAP
A5: We have to toot our own horns and invite people into our world. Our classrooms should be open for everyone to see and experience. Try twitter, periscope, facebook live. Show what you have to offer. #learnLAP
A4b. The culture would spread beyond just learning, caring and kindness! What other programs for families and community can we share and plan as well! #learnlap
If your admins ordered you to put it back, would you? And if it doesn't impact student learning, why did you get rid of it? (Or did you mean it didn't negatively impact learning?) #learnLAP
A5: Share your stories of what's happening in your building/district. Build community collaborations, ask to share a school board meetings, share at conferences you are able to attend. You are your district's biggest cheerleader! #learnLAP
If I have Ss who hate school I make it my goal to figure out why. I have lunch with them, attend their extra curricular activities, etc. to help them understand we care. It is not easy, but school needs to be a place Ss want to be. #learnLAP
This isnât about students loving every single academic class but rather a safe environment to learn, a place where they know they are cared about, a place where their growth and achievement is celebrated. #learnlap
A5: We are taking a page out of the RCA, and we are having our own Great Shake competition this week. Business Leaders from the community are helping out as judges. We cannot wait to show off our 5th graders to the community.
#LearnLAP
Thatâs awesome! I love that youâre setting goals and working toward them right alongside your students - what a great role model you are for them!! #learnLAP
A5 share our stories promote your school like a band promotes its new album or concert tour. Invite people to events MAKE reasons to open your doors for people to visit or explore #LearnLAP
You need less of that crap stuffed in your desk than you think, lol! For someone with weak materials management, like me, less is more! I keep IEPs in my school bag and use my old teacher desk for craft supplies now/kids sit on it in the gathering area of our class. #learnlap
Students will run to school if they have these components built into school culture. I would argue to say that for at the primary level as well as the secondary level. #LearnLAP
A5: We have to toot our own horns and invite people into our world. Our classrooms should be open for everyone to see and experience. Try twitter, periscope, facebook live. Show what you have to offer. #learnLAP
A5 Share what is happening in students' lives in school. Student generated blog posts and tweets that amplify S understanding. This sparks community interests. Also connecting with the community as a resource can help others "show up." #LearnLAP
Thatâs awesome! I have two friends that are admin they have portable desks or have created a hub for all admin to meet quickly in their office space. It is amazing. #learnLAP
But only if the Ss will talk to you. The ones who hate school won't have lunch with me and don't have extracurriculars...they just split as soon as classes are over. #learnLAP
A5: I send shoutouts to parents about the awesome things their Ss do, to admin and other staff for things they do to help or inspire me, and to show gratitude. People want to know what weâre doing for me to be so excited to share #learnlap
Q2: We want our Ss to "Show Up" physically and figuratively every day in class. What does it look like when students "Show Up" in our classes? #LearnLAP
Yes! I am planning a talk on the student who really triggered me to keep getting better every day, and thus this talk. He was living in the woods and kept walking to school every day without missing. I owed it to him to bring all I had every day. #LearnLAP
A5
Talk to people
If you don't say it they won't know it

#LearnLAP
Thank you. Yes, it did not negatively impact learning. The benefit for the learning env far outweighed the purpose it served me. If I was ordered to have it returned I guess I would and turn it into shelving, S seating, or a place to house plants. #LearnLAP
Q6: Many Ts don't feel they are doing anything "special" or they don't have time to "Show Off".
What are the benefits of "Showing Off" our classrooms and campuses to professionals, outsiders, and stakeholders? #LearnLAP
Where there is a will there is a way. I like to find out what they like. You can tell from what is on their folders, backpacks, etc. Maybe meet Ss at the door with a high five or a handshake. #LearnLAP
A5- we do this like we show up for kids. We celebrate and honor effort, we meet people where they care and take interest in their stories and successes. We have to be cheerleaders and comrades so people know their work matters! #LearnLAP
A5. Hold a community engagement tour inviting businesses, people, local leaders into your school and sharing with them your needs for your school, an active tour of your school in classrooms by Ss, special things teacher might be looking for, mentors, etc. #learnlap
A4 Think of the smiles and engagement everyone will have. Learning and growing with each other. Teachers and students trying new things and excited to do so... sign me up!!!#LearnLAP
A6: We can't just assume that everybody knows what is going on. Start by showing one thing, and that kind of "breaks the ice" Plus it allows for others to get ideas and look for ways to continually improve #LearnLAP
A5: I for one am learning a lot about schools outside Singapore via Twitter but not everyone is so lucky to be in this forum. We get downloads fron our schools via once-a-month newsletters amd invitations to participate in parent-teacher workshops #learnLAP
It drove me crazy when I started and the seasoned educators would say "don't smile until Christmas". Why should we all be miserable for half of the year? #LearnLAP
A6: Special doesn't have to be something magical. Sometimes what you are doing on a day to day basis makes it special. When others see what you are doing they want to become a part of your community, send their children to your school or want to share best practices. #learnLAP
A6: It is in those routine moments of good work that students grow the most. It's important to share because what is routine to us - could be innovative to others. There shouldn't be any mystery about what goes on in the classroom. #learnlap
A6: As my good friend @SteinbrinkLaura would say, âWhat is ordinary to you may be extraordinary to someone else.â Spread the word. You may help someone else who didnât know that was possible. #learnlap
Mine was not interrupting in morning meeting to "help". Lol! It took a while to get kids to help me wait my turn but it made them better leaders and me a better listener! #learnlap
A6 it builds support and pride in our schools from parents and the community. It also inspires others to try new things or affirms ideas they have that they are unsure about. It also show appreciation for students and staff for a job well done. #LearnLAP
A6: I'm going through my Masters Program right now, and I love "Showing Off" with my cohort. My hope is that maybe they can learn something from me, and more importantly, they will feel comfortable enough to "Show Off" so I can learn something from them.
#LearnLAP
Q6: no matter where we teach (urban, suburban, rural, etc), communities want to know the future of their community is succeeding. It is comforting to know the positives especially in communities that are underserved. #learnlap
A6. Never assume that people know what's taking place inside a school! You must share your story! The good news going on throughout the school with all stakeholders! #learnlap
A6 - I'm always SO thankful when teachers share what they're doing on Twitter or blog posts! I pillage ideas left & right, tweak them, etc.
Even if you don't feel you're doing anything great, share with others! One teacher's simple lesson is another teacher's TREASURE! #LearnLAP
A6: in sped, itâs easy to be overlooked unless thereâs a big problem. My Ss arenât recognized in the usual way, so I make sure to show I value their efforts and that even little gains are worthy of celebration. An inch of growth for one S might be a mile for another. #learnlap
A5 I think some of it is modeling and showing off what happens when everyone shows up. Sometimes people want to try, but are afraid too, but if they can see what happens when everyone shows up maybe we can encourage others to do the same! #LearnLAP
As a mom of teenagers I get it. They may be taller and make bigger mistakes, but they still need and want someone who cares. They need someone who takes a vested interest in them. #LearnLAP
A6 Inviting others into our learning spaces provides us w/ new perspectives & valuable observations. Though I'm proud w/ what we do we can always improve. I look forward to hearing what others notice & how lessons/units/experiences can be changed for the benefit of lrng #LearnLAP
Q7: It is great when Ss share their accomplishments with others.
How can we empower Ss to "Show Off" what they are learning and doing in our classes and campuses? What does it look like? #LearnLAP
A6: I feel like school gets a negative outlook in the public's eye. If we show the community what we are doing in our classroom, then we can show the world how we are impacting those student's lives #LearnLAP
A6: These words come to mind: "It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world." #LearnLAP
I agree, at least in the abstract. But when I try to reach out to them, many times they aren't having it. I have learned that the SOMEONE doesn't have to be ME all the time. #learnLAP
Yeah, Iâve actually never taught at elementary, I am speaking from my experience as a classroom teacher of high schoolers and a school administrator. Again , in my professional experience these components bring kids (11-18) to school. #learnlap
A4: I think more people would understand and respect the power of productive struggle and growth mindset. Hard work does pay off. As long as we all show up and commit. #LearnLAP
A room transformation or playing music when they walk in might ignite something in your kids to get excited. I would keep trying to shake hands or high fives. #learnLAP
A5b. IF you hold a community engagement tour, make sure you do follow-ups with those stake holders! Answer questions, comments, etc. Thank people for participation! #learnlap
A6: The benefits of opening our classroom doors and sharing our expertise with others is that we ALL grow. If we say we are lifelong learners, we need to live it. #learnlap
A6
Every teacher has something to show off
As the Tech coach I try to get into each room and tweet about something exciting happening in every class
I also encourage ts to pop in & see what other ts are doing
It might be a flexible seating area a bb idea or an activity! #learnlap
How often do the Ss see rooms without T desks? Maybe they had little to no context on the impact it could have. Can you do a trial run for both the desk and flex seating? Go through a little design thinking with the group. #LearnLAP
A7 we need to model it for them and encourage them to share on our social media. Celebrate what they are doing to build confidence and pride to bolster their willingness to share. #LearnLAP
Yes! "MAKE reasons to open your doors". I like the idea of putting the community in a position where they have to choose to not engage with the school because of the outreach that is happening from the leadership and staff. #LearnLAP
A5 share our stories promote your school like a band promotes its new album or concert tour. Invite people to events MAKE reasons to open your doors for people to visit or explore #LearnLAP
A7 - We call it "Taking Action" which means bringing your learning, creation or idea to the real world & getting feedback, questions answered or just informing others. This can be done by creating an ePortfolio post & tweeting it out w/hashtags: https://t.co/jd0RWV4fst#LearnLAP
No, no, no! Teaching is a bit like being a stand up comedian with a sometimes reluctant audience and a bit like being a Ring Master - keeping the show going, the audience smiling, my aides happy & helpful, all the while making it look easy-never let them see you sweat! #learnLap
A7: In the math classroom, I feel like number talks are a great risk free opportunity for students to "show off". I want my students talking through their thought process and to learn from each other.
#LearnLAP
A7. By teaching Ss to express their love of learning, whether it is writing, creating, designing, making, building, painting, videos, demonstrating their learning, they own it! #learnlap
A7: lâve been using @Seesaw this year. Not only does it give students Choice but also has an optional blog feature that can easily be controlled. It is also easily shared with families! #LearnLAP
Q7: It is great when Ss share their accomplishments with others.
How can we empower Ss to "Show Off" what they are learning and doing in our classes and campuses? What does it look like? #LearnLAP
A6 I believe our kids need our very best. It doesnât always take hours to make a room transformation or an awesome. Find your #PLN and your #PLC that will collaborate with you. Your kids will remember what you did for them. đ #learnLAP
Q6: Many Ts don't feel they are doing anything "special" or they don't have time to "Show Off".
What are the benefits of "Showing Off" our classrooms and campuses to professionals, outsiders, and stakeholders? #LearnLAP
#learnlap A7 My 1st rule is #AlwaysBelieve in Yourself. I bring this theme to my Ss activities by taking #BelieveSelfies Some of the pics are posted on my wall.
Q8: "Showing Off" could cause some hard feelings from those that don't see what you are trying to do.
How do we help other educators see the benefits of "Showing Off" what we all have happening in our classrooms/campuses?
#LearnLAP
This is sad. It is time to think about what needs to change. We all can change to make things better. Do you have a mentor or a coach at your school? #learnLAP
A6 - We are smarter together! If we make a culture of sharing success in a way that replicates more success for kids (not just duplicating the exact lesson) it would be incredible! I love discussion protocols to figure out WHY, not just a dog and pony show of what #LearnLAP
I like to have my students teach other Ss whenever possible. They can take ownership and pride in their success. I also try to integrate my sped Ss into the school culture so itâs obvious when where not present - whether itâs in a newsletter, an assembly or at lunch. #LearnLAP
A8: This is a tough one. In my experience, trying new things and celebrating the learning in my own classroom has naturally lent itself to be recognized by others. Staying humble and offering to share and support others has always been received positively. #learnlap
A6 Inviting others into our learning spaces provides us w/ new perspectives & valuable observations. Though I'm proud w/ what we do we can always improve. I look forward to hearing what others notice & how lessons/units/experiences can be changed for the benefit of lrng #LearnLAP
A7: My kindergarteners love using @Seesaw to share their writing, reading, and other great learning with their families... and their parents love seeing/commenting on their SSâs posts... and the Ss love seeing their familyâs feedback... itâs a BEAUTIFUL cycle! #LearnLAP
A8 part of this is how you share your story. I think with colleagues it comes down to sharing for the greater good. If we donât share, collaborate and provide feedback we squander the opportunity to share the gift. #LearnLAP
A8 - It's not easy. People can usually tell if you're self-promoting for personal gain or ego boosts, or sharing ideas for the betterment of education and students everywhere. Have good intentions and most people will understand! #ButHatersGonnaHate ;) #LearnLAP
A8: Leaders must create the conditions for showing off to happen. It starts with a culture grounded in trust, mutual respect, and professionalism. #LearnLAP
Also, to be proud of each other and honor growth and learning in the community! Sometimes they can learn to see it in someone else and then can apply that skill to themselves too or vice versa #LearnLAP
Cultural Competency is so important. I investigate their backgrounds and maybe visit their family business. I would make it a big deal they are helping their family business. Not everyone goes to college. There is not shame in that. #learnLAP
A8: I think a lot of it comes from the trust bank account that you have built up. If your peers see you as someone who is passionate about the students' learning, there should be less risk of hurt feelings. They will understand the why behind your actions.

I cannot thank @PaulSolarz enough for the chance to moderate #LearnLAP tonight. It has been a great pleasure.
Thanks to all of you #EduHeroes for Showing Up and Showing Off the great things you do!
#TLAP Chat will start in five minutes - don't miss out!

A8b this has to be done by building a culture of sharing, trust and value. Pineapple charts are a great way to get teachers into other classrooms to observe and share this can help showing off become a norm not a negative #LearnLAP
A8. If every educator kept things locked up in a box and didn't tell anyone about what they were doing, there wouldn't be much support or engagement in the school! Share your story! #learnlap
A7: We can empower students to show what they are learning by modeling this for them. When do we lift up and share their work? What opportunities do we provide for sharing? It can look like a gallery walk of reading journals or inviting parents to a poetry slam. #learnlap
Invite other Ts and Staff into your room. Get their opinion and advice on what youâre doing. Another set of eyes can help to improve your practice and expand your thinking #LearnLAP
A6: If the community is "good-mouthing" you, the positive vibe will squash many small negative things before they become big things, building support, where time may have been taken to put out fires. Being proactive is never a waste of time and most always saves time. #learnlap
#learnlap This flow chart was created in my attempt to write down how my 1st rule has impacted and changed lives. My book will be out soon. My goal as a teacher is to spread the impact a Tr can have if they make thier 1st rule #AlwaysBelieve in Yourself.
Q8: I think before we show off what we do in our room, we can showcase others successes! This has helped me get some great ideas, and it makes others feel special, because they are! I also try to demo how their success helped or motivated me to do something great! #LearnLAP
A8- why is this even a thing in education?? It definitely is, but WHY?? Why is success/happiness = bragging? Let's cheer on and honor our colleagues, ourselves and our learning! If it comes from a place of lifting everyone up and celebration of others that usually helps #learnlap

A8 I like to ask colleagues to join me in creating room transformations, connect with them during #PLCs, and feel confident I am doing what is best for kids. #LearnLAP
Q8: "Showing Off" could cause some hard feelings from those that don't see what you are trying to do.
How do we help other educators see the benefits of "Showing Off" what we all have happening in our classrooms/campuses?
