#A1 Empower them with aspirations underpinned with resilience. They want to be a journalist. Show them the route, explain what unpaid internships are. Explain how hard it can be, but that it is not impossible!
#ukedchat A1 Real life, relatable examples of overcoming adversity. Ex students who have went on to be successful, guest speakers from similar backgrounds are always useful.
Always doing my best to do that little bit extra- lunchtime clubs, offering a helping hand where needed, showing support in extra curricular too! Every child is one caring adult away from a success story. You never know the effect you're having. #ukedchat
#UKEdChat Q2
What are some of the most obvious inequalities that lead to a disadvantage for students in your daily practice?
▶Please use the hashtag & A2◀
A1 Provide opportunities and have high expectations. Share stories of achievers from different backgrounds - make them believe they can do it. #UKEdChat
Love this. The “underpinned with resilience” bit is perhaps where it falls down sometimes - I know some schools where aspirations are very much focussed on, but ‘building resilience’ could be developed quite a lot more. Great to see this.
#UKEdChat A2 poverty and a significant lack of awareness and understanding of it among colleagues and organisations. We prevent those in poverty gaining an education in a myriad different ways often.

What are some of the most obvious inequalities that lead to a disadvantage for students in your daily practice?
▶Please use the hashtag & A2◀
#ukedchat#A1 Enrichment & motivation. Trips/access to visitors/academics/documentaries/books/films as well as opportunities to build resilience, coaching, conversations & feedback.
Probably parental/home support stood out the most when I was classroom based. Whether that was the amount of time parents/carers were able to give their children, the money involved (eg taking children on multiple visits outside of school), or emotional support. #UKEdChat A2
#UkEdChat Q2 Lack of role-models at home who value education, leading to lack of awareness of both why it's important and also how to go about studying (quite space etc.).
#UKEdChat Q2
What are some of the most obvious inequalities that lead to a disadvantage for students in your daily practice?
▶Please use the hashtag & A2◀
#ukedchat#A2 poverty. students needing a place to study, tools to study with like paper, pens. Unable to: watch documentaries at home, have a conversation with adults at home, visit the city centre/ride a tram.
#UKEdChat#A2 Parental support. As extreme as no breakfast to sleep; as simple as never reading with them. Got to play all roles for a child sometimes- and glad to do so!
Q1 #UkEdChat Stressing the options that a good education brings, it's not about using the actual subject (e.g. I'll never use history again) but about the opportunities good results can bring and the doors it opens.
A2: Many differences are a result from the different homes ... are they academic or not? rich or poor? living in the city or in the countryside? #UKEdChat
Through a strong school community, student confidence can be improved and with good contact between teachers and parents we can but try to improve parental support. #ukedchat
A3 #UkEdchat Seeing boys from poorer backgrounds fail to success because they don't understand importance of education & don't have role-models who they identify with. Too many convinced they'll become famous rappers/footballers.
We have ex-students who are e.g. A sous-chef in a gastro pub, working self-employed at a car valet, working as a mechanic in a well known garage, in the armed forces...All students from poor backgrounds who used education as a way out, and tell the current students so #ukedchat
A3 a big disadvantage is when parents don't value education. Really hard to win hearts and minds when people don't value what you value. Frustrating thing is education transforms lives - and we have a battle giving it to them - for free #UKEdChat
Step back and ask yourself: 'is it likely to be true?'

A3 The simplicity of approach and basic humanity that could prevent or resolve a huge number of inequality related issues. But the fact that it still doesn’t always happen. We moved from public sector education to private to do just this.
#ukedchat A3 Parents who will spend £200 on fashionable trainers, but will send students in with no breakfast because they haven't been shopping yet....
Q2 #ukedchat one of the most obvious inequalities is access to books and reading at home. Something as simple as reading 20 minutes per day Vs not at all can have a HUGE impact #readingforpleasure#OuRfP#readingrocks
Parental access to knowledge and skills of how to support learning at home.
The biggest influencer in young children's success and enjoyment of school yet always overlooked.

A2. Poverty is the most obvious to me. Some children are lacking the basic tools needed to advance in their education (and life). Equipment, reading books, money for trips, even parental support/attention. #UKEdChat
This is a real thing. We are an #SEMH school, we have ex students back regularly, probably because they feel safer here than anywhere else given the support we give them over the years...handy to show current students there is life beyond school.
#UKEdChat Q5
If your school has identified disadvantage for a group of students, what strategies have been implemented to help?
▶Please use the hashtag & A5◀
Yes absolutely! We can be a place of safety and inspiration and solid, stable relationships. The tangible things can be overcome with a multi agency collaborative approach. #UKEdChat

A4. I think it’s important to educate and support the parents. Some parents have basic education themselves. If they were given support in budgeting for example, it would definitely have an impact on the quality of their children’s learning (and life) experience. #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat Q6
Is there a time in your life where you felt disadvantaged? What steps (if any) did you take to overcome the challenge?
▶Please use the hashtag & A6◀
#ukedchat#A6 I always knew at school we were poorer than other families but it wasn’t until I became a teacher I was aware at how being disadvantaged had shaped my whole education - from primary to University.
A5: We have a pledge for our pupil premium group children and part of it teachers are given 30 minutes a week out of class for 1:1 pupil conferencing. The pledge helps families access free after school clubs, help with homework and financial help buying uniform #ukedchat
Q5 In some schools where EAL / language can be a huge barrier, schools have invested in Spanish-speaking TAs, interpreters for me for parents evening once! Use of apps for translating, bilingual resources etc. #ukedchat

We are 100 pupil premium....We really focus on employability with managing #SEMH to give students the best chance of becoming independent through work. Easier said than done...#ukedchat
Q6. I can’t think of a time where I have felt disadvantaged. Really powerful video about understanding and recognising that https://t.co/qQVKmZrKEO#ukedchat
Embracing the parents/carers. Many parents have had unhelpful experiences of schools. Get parents in through the doors during school hours if possible. Remove the fear. Let them see that their lack of support is unfounded and that we are normal people who want to help.
A6 being a girl who liked sports and pe - don’t think it would happen as much now but there weren’t any teams to join so ended up in the boys football team. They did go on to create a girls team
Reading through one of the school journals from 1885 in which, ‘The Inspector of Nuisance’ from HMI came to inspect the school! (@Ofstednews) #PrimaryRocks#ukedchat
Class sizes from historical records of the school. Barely deal with thirty-odd let alone FORTY-SEVEN! Wonder how much differentiation, provision mapping and quality-feedback was given then... #PrimaryRocks#ukedchat
