Hi! I'm Kara and I am a literacy coach at PS234. I'm also an adjunct at Bank Street College of @bankstreetedu where I teach Reading, Writing and Language Arts with my friend and colleague @suzrolander Happy to join in the conversation this morning! #preservicelit#LitBankStreet
Hi everyone. I'm Katie - former elementary teacher and literacy coach. Did my PhD in Urban Literacy at @unccharlotte and now am a Professor of Education at @FurmanU in South Carolina. Excited for this inaugural chat! #preservicelit
Hi everyone! I’m Emily. I’m a student teacher and assistant librarian @MiamiRegionals I’m very excited to be here and chat with you all. #preservicelit
A1: To me, literacy is the ability to read, write, listen, speak, view, represent and compose to learn more about ourselves and to leave our mark on the world. Yes, it is about skills and strategies but all in pursuit of a larger goal to transform. #preservicelit
A1 To me literacy is an all encompassing term. It's the ability to gather information and express thoughts and ideas in a variety of ways. It involves: reading, writing, thinking, visual literacy, oral expression, thoughtful listening,..#preservicelit#LitBankStreet
A1: Literacy is the world: Reading, writing, speaking, and listening. And our info comes from text, written, visual, digital, and includes the people in our lives!

A1. I think of literacy as communication --- either expressing ideas (writing) or understanding someone else's ideas (reading) And communication makes the world go around! #preservicelit
. @AffinitoLit I think many times in our craze to heighten skills we forget about the ultimate goal of literacy:.. communication and message. We have to help students see what they are doing all this work for. #preservicelit

A1: It is more than just reading, writing, speaking and viewing as the curriculum often suggests. I think it is a process of becoming, so much more than just a few buzzwords. It is a process of understanding the world around us. #preservicelit
A1. What is literacy? Literacy is reading, writing, listening, speaking, creating, and viewing in tradition and in digital spaces. Literacy is thinking. Literacy is power and praxis for social transformation. Literacy is life changing. #preservicelit
This was such a great point, Emily. Each of our students have their own definition as well and we need to find the common threads to reach them where they are and then help them move forward. #preservicelit
A1: There is literacy in the traditions and customs within cultures. My mother's generation .... quilts are literacy. The stories they tell.
#preservicelit
Comprehension is so important, Emily. Sometimes we are so focused on reading the words that we forget they do not matter is students do not understand the message. #preservicelit
A2: My ideal classroom is full of real reading and writing with little busy work. It has a joyful hum, responds to individual students and connects us all together in a community. #preservicelit
I love thinking about literacy as stories. Our stories, our students stories and the stories of the world. Each story might look different and have a different medium, but they are all stories to tell that impact who we are. #preservicelit
Q2: Ideal classroom is brimming with books, with authentic purposes for children to read and write, and is dominated by student-generated questions #preservicelit
A1: There is literacy in the traditions and customs within cultures. My mother's generation .... quilts are literacy. The stories they tell.
#preservicelit
A2 My classroom would be welcoming and calming. There would be a variety of places to tuck away and work -- soft lighting, cozy rugs, lots of places to get lost in reading and writing and thinking. #preservicelit#LitBankStreet
Absolutely @AffinitoLit and I would add that comprehension isn’t something we work on AFTER they can read the words. Comprehension work occurs throughout the day, from images, read aloud, etc. #preservicelit
Comprehension is so important, Emily. Sometimes we are so focused on reading the words that we forget they do not matter is students do not understand the message. #preservicelit
A2: Students deep in books in one corner, in conversations in another and writing their reflections all around the room. Book Club Fridays have been amazing to watch, Students sharing AHA moments and Wise Words in their text. #preservicelit

A2: Ideal: Students are joyfully playing, reading, writing, speaking, listening, AND creating during all hours of the day. Choice & voice are important as students increase their knowledge of themselves & the world in terms of math literacies & info literacies.
#preservicelit
A2. I’d like to have pictures of objects and then have the words beneath them. I’d also like to get my kids to write as much as possible about something they understand and speak to one another, as well as me, about what the sentence they just wrote was. #preservicelit
A2 - Abundance of books on shelves and baskets, covers out to entice readers to pick them up and dive in. Student work fills the walls so you can tell who lives in this space. Materials available at for students to get independently. #preservicelit#LitBankStreet

Great response, calming environments are so important! I also think that there needs to be several different types of work spaces for different personalities. Students don’t all work best in the same classroom conditions so that needs to be recognized #preservicelit
A2. Hi all! Tatiana, preservice teacher at @FurmanU. My ideal classroom would be completely student-centered, driven by student choice in reading and writing with lots of meaningful, authentic opportunities to engage in these practices. #preservicelit
A2 Books books books. Kids would be able to see themselves in the books available to them. They would also be able to see less familiar ways of being to broaden their world views. They would have input in the books selected for inclusion in the classroom library. #preservicelit
Yes, and literacy in my preschool classroom also includes drawing, singing, telling and acting out stories, creating new/alternative endings, so that every student can find his or her own angle to enter the beautiful, magical world of literacy...
#preservicelit
A2: My ideal classroom would be to have a nice soft carpet next to a big bookshelf with beanbags and lots of books. So that my students could get lost in books all day. I would also display all of their work on the walls and have all of the supplies labeled.#preservicelit
A3: I am a bit biased, but I would love to see even more literacy classes in undergraduate education, a strong focus on practicums within the classroom and a system of support across an education program strengthening our virtual PLN’s! #preservicelit
Q3: Of course I'm biased, but I wish preservice teacher ed included more focus on the power of think alouds. And I truly believe basic linguistics need to be included. #preservicelit
A2 Books books books. Kids would be able to see themselves in the books available to them. They would also be able to see less familiar ways of being to broaden their world views. They would have input in the books selected for inclusion in the classroom library. #preservicelit
I completely agree. When is the last time any of us walked into a book store or a library and looked for a book by level? As adults do we even know our levels? #preservicelit
Welcome, Tatiana! I am so glad you are joining us! Meaningful, authentic choices are exactly what we give ourselves as adult readers and writers, so why not give the same to our student? #preservicelit
A3. This is a very tough question. I think I would like hands on activities that help with learning to read and write are very useful. I’d love to have enough in a budget to fill my classroom with enough activities so my kids never get bored. #preservicelit
Environmental print is so important, Emily. Young students need to know they can already read the world, so conventional text is within their reach! #preservicelit
A3 My wishlist for educators with any amount of experience is to have a community to think with. We all are stronger when we question, discuss, ponder, and experiment together. I want this for myself and for my students. So happy to have #preservicelit !! #LitBankStreet
And I bet you'll want an endless budget for books! We can never have enough books and it's sometimes hard at first to stick a new classroom's library #preservicelit

Trevor. Art and literacy teacher from NJ. Literacy to me is the ability to make meaning from visual or written texts and to communicate effectively by creating visual or written texts. #preservicelit

A1 I think literacy in the broadest sense of the word: How we make sense of the world @ us through reading, writing, talking and thinking. It's not something we do at a narrow "block" in the day but what we do across the learning day and beyond our school walls #preservicelit
And if we can’t teach literacy in a way that kids will carry it in their back pockets so that it will permit their every turn, then we are missing the point of literacy! #preservicelit
A1: To me, literacy is the ability to read, write, listen, speak, view, represent and compose to learn more about ourselves and to leave our mark on the world. Yes, it is about skills and strategies but all in pursuit of a larger goal to transform. #preservicelit
A2 the words that come to mind are joyful, engaging, meaning driven and purposeful. We do kids a great disservice when the literacy in our classrooms doesn’t look like the literacy lives we live. If we wouldn’t do it, why would we ask kids to do it? #preservicelit
A2 Classrooms must be designed to BATHE children in beautiful books and greet them at every turn. Our goal is to inspire and inform them so that they can lead readerly/writerly lives long after they leave us! #preservicelit
A2 Literacy begins at birth. We cannot withhold meaningful book experiences and meaning-making until children know their letters sounds. We greet them at the door with books and immerse them in meaning from the earliest grades. #preservicelit
Who wouldn’t want to be in that kind of classroom Kara…. and I think that we have a responsibility to our children to create the kid of classrooms that we would want to be in - joyful and filled with possibility! ❤️ #preservicelit
A2 - Abundance of books on shelves and baskets, covers out to entice readers to pick them up and dive in. Student work fills the walls so you can tell who lives in this space. Materials available at for students to get independently. #preservicelit#LitBankStreet
A3 More conversations w/ enthusiastic others. Dialogue is the great equalizer. It helps us make sense of this beautiful work we're so blessed to do in the company of others. Teaching isn't meant to be lonely. Find your professional posses & hold on for dear life! #preservicelit
