#innov8dmps Archive
Run by Des Moines Public School Instructional Technology Coordinators and moderated by them and educators from the district every Tuesday from 8-9pm CST during the school year. We take occasional breaks for the Holidays, but we are consistently trying to reach out to our 60 plus schools and programs to collaborate and tell their stories.

Q1 Welcome to chat over "Shifting Gears into a Growth Mindset!" as usual introduce yourself and a littl… https://t.co/tWZKGBQHYy
A1: Mike Sherman, Iowa, Cubbies, 3rd base
A1: Jacob W.
I'm in front of my TV.
Wrigley Field beer vendor?
A1: Melanie, Instructional Tech Coordinator, Fleur Building, Pitcher at heart!
A2: Experience, getting better everyday, confidence to understand not being there yet has to be OK sometimes
Sorry , I'm out tonight. Lots of stuff going on, but excited to catch up on the chat later.
A1: Cherry-Anne Gildharry, East and Lincoln High. Sorry don't play baseball.
A1 - Hi! I'm Megan Ihnen, a professional classical musician. I love this topic! https://t.co/KumsR94XTp
Q1 Welcome to chat over "Shifting Gears into a Growth Mindset!" as usual introduce yourself and a littl… https://t.co/tWZKGBQHYy
A1: Emily here from HR in Des Moines
A2: Knowing that I've never mastered anything. There's always things to learn. Key difference between fixed/growth to me!
A1 Sandy Kirkman, 6th grade math and science. catcher -
A2 growth mindset, because I don't like to fail so I always change. Fixed mindset, accepting as in... it for me.
A2: My challenging life experiences that taught me to never give up! Growth mindset is when you are always revising & improving
A2: Experience has given me a growth mindset. Learning about ppl and cultures
Haha! That is a pretty full wagon from my observations!!! But I'm sure there is still room!
A3: Affirmation is important. Collaboration is key. We need to know that growth is a process, How can I help us get there.
A3 "not yet" how many times can I use this for an answer ;)
That is a great way to look at it! You're right, they may be more experienced but they are still learning too!
A3.2 help others see and remember where they have come from and all they have learned themselves
I see you! Nice job! Congrats
A3: I just try and encourage by example. I think kitschy phrases can sometimes cheapen it or water it down.
Great attitude! Never give up and never settle for a lesser version of yourself!
A3: tell stories, ask questions. "Talk to me about..."
those phrases also help it stick in people's minds and make them think about it often
asking questions one of best ways to build that relationship with Ss tooI think!
A3: Lead by example! If people see you always learning, they will strive to do the same!
A2:A growth mindset is always trying to get better. A fixed mindset is just being ok with where you are.
A3: Always displaying a growth mindset encourage other teachers to adopt. "Embrace challenges" "Never give up"
A4; The confidence to say "I don't understand" or I'm still learning opens the door to the process that gets us there.
A4 Confidence is being able to ask for help when needed
A4: Sts have to learn to be confident and comfortable with being wrong. Create a safe space for them to fail again and again.
A4 Ts need to be confident in Ss that they will reach their goal/proficiency. Confidence can be contagious
A4: I think Ss have to feel confident in both failing and succeeding. If they have that, they'll always have a
A4 The T helps St build confidence by having a culture where mistakes are valued.
I love the idea of embracing challenges. It is overcoming these challenges that allows for growth!
and for teachers to model that attitude! They need to.
Q3 model, model, model. I have my name on the behavior chat, I move my card. Ts need to model thinking and actions for ss
Woah. Love that! I have taken a break in front of my kids before when I need a minute to chill out.
Love this response! So often, we just settle for less, convincing ourselves we can't do more! Changing this is key!
A4 displaying confidence in failure, I will fail, i will be okay, I will learn from it, and I will try something different.
comfortable to fail! I am always trying to make my Ss comfortable (and I need to be comfortable as well) to fail
A4 Building confidence leads to believing that increased work will lead to increased results.
A4: When Ss have great self-confidence they never feel embarrassed if they make mistakes, but are proud to learn from these!
perfect way to say that! "culture where mistakes are valued!" using that one!
I like your use "valued!" You can find 100 reasons how something doesn't work, but one that does... value!
A5: Being culturally proficient is a journey, not a destination. It starts with the realization that you are not.
Haha! I love that you gauge your behavior too! Great example!
A4: If the T makes the playing field even, all students will feel confident.
A5 I think it means everyone, especially Ss, need Ts to instill a growth mindset no matter background
A5: it helps me stop and take other perceptions into consideration b4 making a decision
A5: Being culturally proficient REQUIRES that we back up & look at our mistakes/privileges. It's hard work but worth the pay off
A5.2 we all have so much to learn. I want to learn right along side of my Ss and I need to model that
Key to resilience and growth! No embarrassment = ability to be a risk-taker!
The way you make it even is meeting each Ss personally, where they are and knowing how they can grow
A5: Focusing on progress & learning instead of 'checking it off'
A5: Helps me take other perspectives into consideration b4 making a decision
learning about our biases has helped me tremendously just knowing helps me with others
A5: Recognizing that we all have biases, even if we think we don't! The key is identifying the ones we have and working on them
I'm a 5th Grade teacher in Des Moines and GO CUBs
- I'n not familiar with the term - I can assume based on context, but you know what they say.
We are halfway through our questions! Remember to use A1, A2 etc. and on your answers! Helps us stay organized!
A5 acknowledge where we're are, set a goal, keep yourself in check, learn from mistakes...and have hard conversations
A2: I've used to introduce a growth mindset! They have a wonderful video series explaining it!
A7: I think it starts by framing it with how do we make this better. We have to see failure as opportunity to try again.
A6: I would rephrase it as the secret is how you respond to failure. do you reflect, revise, and start again?
A6 there are only successes because there have been failures.
A6 I agree with reflective failure is the secret to success
I haven't failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.
- T. Jefferson
A7 We learn best from failure. Something we don't share often enough w/Ss.
A5: A growth mindset is wanting to learn & grow! Being cultural proficient is learning & growing with regard to other cultures!
A6 "Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better."
- Sam Beckett
A6: Failure is already a key component to learning - it helps us reach success when we can identify gaps.
beautiful! Best gif of the night award, just bc I am a big, no huge Jordan fan! This quote was so before its time!
A6: trail and error, but we need to learn from others mistakes. I don't looking at it has failed. I just missed the target.
sharing our failure with Ss helps us gain some "street cred" with them as well, builds those relationships!
Haha! I totally had this gif picked out too!
For sure - they like to know that we are human.
So often, we try to be perfect in front of Ss and the truth is, for Ss to be successful, we should do the opposite!
A3: In my class we celebrate struggles and growth mindset moments by explaining how we reconnected our neurons!
Truth! It's always a great day to be wrong. https://t.co/e8pbekDS6R
So often, we try to be perfect in front of Ss and the truth is, for Ss to be successful, we should do the opposite!
A6: It is the secret to success when a consistent focus is placed on improving and learning from our mistakes!!!!!!!
A7 Ts need to foster Ss acceptance in their failures and nurture them into accepting criticism from each other
And so often, we don't recognize culture is not limited to race! So many other factors like Caribbean culture!!
A7 focus on growth. Where did you come from? What have you learned? How will you grow? How did you grow?
A7.2 my data wall this year shows the growth of the students. Not necessarily proficiency met, but if growth happened
A7 talk about when I mess up, ask kids for input on what I could change, and laugh at my errors because they are no big deal
A7: Have to build a culture in the classroom where taking risks is safe
We lost on that 2-out double...
A7; Continue to question. What decisions did you make? What caused you to make them? What would you do differently?
since we are all here.. students making short films on split.. bleh. Multiple iPads not option. Suggestions????
Super gif! you are so now!
By the way, I love the poster questions! They are !!!
Ss have to think through the process of their thinking!
A7: I think his goes back to showing Ss that we aren't perfect! It's a culture of risk-taking, failure, success and growth!
Love it! Only a science teacher!!!
Their videos are wonderful. https://t.co/FwqrTypSI3
A2: I've used to introduce a growth mindset! They have a wonderful video series explaining it!
Yikes! Tough question! Phones not an option I am assuming?
A8: What is, How do we get grittier kids?
A8 What you don't want in your gravy.
Nice work !!! They look great!
That's the power of YET ! https://t.co/JgXOuefVTC
I haven't failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.
- T. Jefferson
A8. Struggling through this is hard, but what are you gaining?
how did the Ss respond/think about the videos, I have heard about these, but have not watched
A8: What trait makes me the proudest when I see it in my daughter? (after kindness)
A7: Always keep in mind that " Failures are opportunities to grow" and " we learn the most from our mistakes"
A8: What's does it take to get knocked down/fail and get right back up and try again. Then do it again day after day.
A8: What is a student sticking with it even in the face of adversity like when they have failed?
A8: When it seems the world is against you, how do you make yourself keep going?
I love it! Great question. Getting back up is so "gritty!"
I had to share with tonight's topic.
From my 2nd grade daughter. Can you tell she has 2 teachers for p… https://t.co/AUvO6ynYrK
A8 What is the thing that keeps you going even when everything sucks and is hard?
A8: When you fall, what gives you the strength to get back up?
love it! Exactly what I would want my Ss to know in my room! thanks for sharing!
a8 my personal belief, grit is what many kids of poverty have naturally. academic grit is similar.
That's a question for your ITC! Maybe we can discuss it in our next meeting!
Love this. Being vulnerable is a huge opportunity to model for and engage the class https://t.co/NrKd9EoVGZ
A7 talk about when I mess up, ask kids for input on what I could change, and laugh at my errors because they are no big deal
Love this! I always liked FAIL and then SAIL (Second attempt in learning)!
A9; When Ss build a portfolio of best evidence it helps facilitate reflection. Am I there yet? What evidence do I have?
A9 Assessments that allow different types of responses: conversation, writing, draw a diagram etc. SRG is helpful with this
A9.1 sometimes I only offer questions for ss to answer they should know...
A9.2 sometimes I assign questions for students to try to answer that they will be able to answer at the end of the unit
I feel like that's also a confidence builder for Sts!
A9 only circle or star what they did right. I look for the steps and see what they have. Then ask one guiding question
A9: When we are required to assess student who are not there yet.
Instructional Tech Coordinator. I think you had previously? Might be this year?
A9 part 2 I hand them the assessment about 3 days ahead..ask are you ready, who wants reteaching, tell me on what. No surprises
A9: Don't put any grades on assessments...
9 times out of 10 staying positive pays off for each particular Ss!
A10: I like that Duckworth TEDtalk that shared earlier.
A9: I'm having my Ss upload initial solutions & final products to their websites in order to see & explain the growth acquired
I know also does "interviews" after assessments to justify their grade! Great strategy!
how does SRG fit into this?
A10 class dojo videos, what do you do with ideas (book), study epic failures
A10 Just having an ongoing conversation. Sts shared w/ fams at conferences (student led) cool to see them talk about it
I love this! That way, Ss can see how far they have come! True and inspiration to keep improving!
Absolutely - SRG is all about the standard, not the grade!
A10 First teach Ss what it means to have a growth mindset. Model it for them. Lots of great rubrics out there.
