Hi! I'm Heather Singmaster, associate director of @AsiaSocietyEDU and host of #globaledchat. Can I say the @DalaiLama? I can't think of anyone who promotes peace more than he does! :)
Hi everyone at #globaledchat I'm Kathleen, and my MG hisfic The Last Cherry Blossom, based on my mom surviving Hiroshima atomic bombing. I'm tagging recent Nobel Peace Prize winner @nuclearban 4all they do toward abolishing nuclear weapons 🌸
Hi everyone over at #Bunceechat! I'm over at #globaledchat talking about peace and justice. It's a pretty easy topic, so if we wrap it up early, we'll head over and join you - ha! :)
A1: I think it’s important to make peace and justice intentional and part of what you do at school every day. Respect for others, conflict resolution, empathy, integrity, not just wallpaper but really walking the talk. #globaledchat
A1: Our work is focused on motivating students to work toward a more peaceful and just society by using their global competence to take action. I try to highlight these stories as I can through social media and blogs. #globaledchat

A1: I started a Human Rights based service club that is still going strong in the school I used to teach in. 3rd-6th graders empowered to research local/national/and global issues and then find a way to be part of the solution. #GlobalEdChat#ClubWeCan#SomethingMoreGlobal
A1:I work hard to create an atmosphere that is just and peaceful for the kids. It starts there. Many of the texts I teach speak to social justice and peace. #globaledchat
A1 have done Skype exchanges with Gaza university Ss with my Ss. Also when was secondary teacher would have students work w/ peace Corps Colnteers thru Peace Corps world Wise Schools #globaledchat
#globaledchat A1. I come from the land of variety , unity in diversity, of acceptance, that gets imbibed in us from the very beginning.and that's what we pass on .it does become challenging at times , but our daily endeavour is to instill these values
A1 #globaledchat Our awesome school #wsdvt promotes ideas around being safe, kind and responsible. This weaves throughout the school, promotion of kindness.
I teach 14-16 year olds. Night, Elie Wiesel's Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech, The Other Wes Moore, Kite Runner and Kafir Boy to name a few. #globaledchat
A1: I facilitate open and honest converstations centered around #peace and #justice with teachers, parents, and community members. I don’t think we talk about these issues enough. #globaledchat
A2: Conversations on peace and justice can be integrated into many subject areas. Goodness knows there are ample opportunities to tie these conversations to current events! #globaledchat
A2: The world is made up of systems and laws, so one way is to view the other #SDGs through the peace and justice lens: environmental protection legislation, business ethics, war financing, the list goes on. #globaledchat
Beth from Charlottesville. Seniors from our entrepreneurship seminar pitched an idea today to start a global learning center at our school to support refugees living in Cville without access to WiFi and other ed resources #Globaledchat
A2: Current events are ripe with opportunities to examine social justice issues and help students grapple with right and wrong through socratic seminar, perspective taking, and debate. @kmurfitt1 is great at this. #globaledchat
A2 by bringing in traditionally marginalized voices, mult perspectives, not shying away from students analyzing repercussions on various groups of policies & actions done by majority. Most of all work in breaking stereotypes! #globaledchat
A2: Allow students to choose a social justice topic that they feel strongly about and blog for change. They could also create events and write politicians. #globaledchat
A1 #globaledchat Stories are wonderful and offer opportunities to have conversations that foster how perspectives can be shared and inspire thinking. 🌏
Is it wrong to suggest mine? 😊, The Last Cherry Blossom. I wrote it to give view of 12 yr old and culture at that time,to show the children in Hiroshima were not so different from Allied Children. Based on events in my moms life🌸 #globaledchat
#GlobalEdChat A2 . The opportunities are plenty. The world is up in arms against each other ,people are so intolerant and all this because if ignorance, my subject History provides ample connections and lessons for life.and I seize every chance I can .
A2: There are many #pathways such as creating peer mediation groups with students, extending grace to colleagues, and highlighting the works of young and old who have worked for #peace and #justice in our world! #globaledchat
Sure! It starts with creating an environment where everyone feels welcome to share and that the outcome is to expand, extend, and challenge thinking—it isn’t about trying to be right. #globaledchat
A3: We read Persepolis, so when the protests were occurring in Iran this past fall, we talked about them and how they related to the information we learned from the book. #globaledchat
A3 #globaledchat In Kindergarten we have many celebrations of learning! One tomorrow morning! This promotes independence, reflection and celebration of what we are exploring and how. Students freely share why and collaborate with each other. Peaceful learning...
A3: My colleagues engaged in dialogue with 7th and 8th graders to unpack what happened in our home town of Charlottesville following the August rallies. Visible thinking guided them to more questions and research #Globaledchat
#GlobalEdChat A3 .so , in a unit on governance Ss debated on good and bad governance ,we spoke of forced migration as a result ,we spoke of Rohingyas ,we spoke ofmuch that's not JUST. We spoke of equality and equity .Fairness and sustainability
A3 with Skype exchange I’ve done w/ Gaza class we’ve expolored israeli-Palestine conflict from@multiple voices & perspectives. 1 year fighting between Israel & Palestine broke out in middle of exchange. Made experience very humanizing #globaledchat
A3
Refugee crisis (pick any of them)
@CNN10 did a great piece today on child labor in Cobalt mines in the DRC
I talk about the need for justice & how institutions could be the key to that! #globaledchat
A3: my teens and tweens discuss issues they feel directly impact them. They have discussed school shootings lately. This has allowed me to also discuss bullying, politics, and you activism. #globaledchat
A3: I love for students to bring a current event for discussion. That event can be at school, the community, or beyond. And whatever they bring—I’m open to it. It took me a little over a decade before I had the courage, but I wish it hadn’t taken so long. #Globaledchat
A4: using @eji_org’s work as inspiration, two students have created @NationalHistory projects about equity in the law. It’s powerful to see teenagers engaged in their world. #GlobalEdChat
A3: My friend's 8th graders researched the UN and the #GlobalGoals and developed questions about what is working and what could be better - I Skyped with them to answer questions and give them other sources to check #TeachSDGs#GlobalEdChathttps://t.co/BTQqsK42RG
#GlobalEdChat A3b. We also had Ss look at unjust acts around themselves..we looked at the deaf .My children volunteered to work for the @NoidaDeafSoc we contributed and spent time with the children and painted their walls ..landed up learning much more than giving
Q4: I’m so proud of all the educators and students across the US right now who are speaking out to improve education for everyone. #globaledchat#wearredfored#teachervoice
#GlobalEdChat A4. We also had Ss look at unjust acts around themselves..we looked at the deaf .My children volunteered to work for the @NoidaDeafSoc we contributed and spent time with the children and painted their walls ..landed up learning much more than giving
Totally agree. When my Ss complained today about my class being depressing, I had to remind them that I show them someone else abnormal for 40 minutes. That other person has to live with it always. #Globaledchat
A2: discussing very serious topics like #HumanTrafficking with the frame of #TeachSDGs helps the Ss. @reefcares is working to develop curriculum to support their #VR experience which cultivates empathy for victims. #GlobalEdChat
A5: It’s always a challenge to balance the terrible things in the world with hope. While it’s important to understand the problems, it is equally important to see light at the end of the tunnel. #globaledchat
#GlobalEdChat my Ss @PathwaysNoida invited the Students from @NoidaDeafSoc and shared a day with them...at the end of it there was a sense of achievement, of acceptance a very humbling experience indeed for all these 13-14 years .and an enriching experience for me as a Teacher
A5: oh, I talked a little abt @reefcares already, but really, the @GlobalGoalsUN help Ss, Ts, & Ps have a language & framework from which they can discuss these larger issues. 2 students created a @NationalHistory project abt modern day slavery & #TeachSDGs helped. #GlobalEdChat
#GlobalEdChat A5 corruption is something that is slowly becoming a part of our culture and to bring that up which is being instilled from the environment is a huge challenge
Not with my Ss yet, but we are going to pilot the curriculum and #VR in schools soon. I know that @billyjoecain has worked with educators in Portland. I’ll let him share more! #GlobalEdChat
A5: When teaching on tough topics the challenge I face is making sure all voices are heard and respect is maintained even when perspectives differ. #globaledchat
Love that the entrepreneurship seminar extends to social impact. I consider “entrepreneurial learning” as a cultivating a quality of alertness to needs - near or far. #globaledchat
It is in the news even more than it has been in the past, and I thought it was pretty apparent then. I agree that it is difficult to talk about because of the current atmosphere in the country. #globaledchat
#GlobalEdChat A6 @PenpalSchools has many topics which connects Students from across the world and provides opportunities to look at plausible solutions.
A4: Last week we took our high school students to AZ to partner with @BorderLinksAZ to learn about immigration & border politics. It’s important to hear stories of those who are affected directly by racist policies, including queer migrants @mariposasSF#globaledchat#teachsdgs
In reply to
@eedowd27, @BorderLinksAZ, @mariposasSF
A6: @eji_org just opened their national monument to peace and justice this past week. I am forever inspired by Bryan, Just Mercy, and the work that EJI does. ❤️ #GlobalEdChat
We use the UN Declaration of Human Rights after reading Night. Students choose several of the rights and then discuss if the rights were upheld or denied during the Holocaust AND if they have been upheld or denied historically in our own country. #globaledchat
Oh, we read and use UDHR, too! Maybe our Ss can talk one day (I teach middle school and I’m in Louisiana. I don’t know if I ever introduced myself, sorry!) #GlobalEdChat
I used the UNDH all the time when I was in the classroom. It can be applied to literature, history, community issues, current events. Such a great resource along with the #SDGs#globaledchat
Fantastic! Our Respect unit is around that time, and we study #Upstanders (they started an #EdCorps, @UpstanderBrand), so we are always excited to share and learn with others. Thanks for being open! #GlobalEdChat
A7: the Ss’ #EdCorps@UpstanderBrand operates from our classroom, but we would love to continue to engage with the larger school community. Next year we will try to cultivate relationships and develop school projects. #GlobalEdChat cc @RWScholars
No need to thank me; my kids will really enjoy this! I will DM you about settiing it up for next year. Don't forget about me, though if it takes me a bit. #globaledchat
#Globaledchat I have to go now but I always learn way more than I contribute here. Thank you all for your compassion toward your students. And your desire to inform them and plant the seed of empathy that will continue to bloom for the rest of their lives.🌸🌸
#GlobalEdChat A7. Make students part of interactions on conflict and ☮️ https://t.co/JFjvuymbLt a unit of conflict and peace keeping recently I had my children draft research question on why is peace so difficult to maintain. SS need to Question the existing order
Thank you for the opportunity @hsingmaster! I love #globaledchat. And thank you to everyone who participated tonight. Awesome resources and lots of hope for the future!
