Good evening sci-pirates! In's December, which is both exciting and scary in teacher-world! Introduce yourself and get ready for Holiday Survival Skills! #scitlap
Hi #scitlap! Megan, 8th Science, D122 in Oak Lawn, IL. Just 'survived' a surprise visit from some out-of-town family! Looking forward to relaxing with my pirates now.
Hello! My name is Katy and I am a pre-service teacher studying elementary and special education at Grove City College! Excited for this chat tonight! #scitlap
A2: I've always kind of avoided holiday themed lessons as not to offend the large # of Ss I have that don't celebrate Christmas - I know there are other ways to work it in, but it's tough! #scitlap
A3: Constant conversations w/ Ss about their traditions, celebrations, etc. I try to keep Christmas out of my classroom so no one feels excluded. Honestly makes me sad because I love Christmas, but it would be more sad for my kids to feel left out. #scitlap
A2 this year, by chance, doing step by step directions practice with wrapping gifts then making an instruction sheet with words & pics. Ss give each other empty boxes. Most just say Happy Birthday. #scitlap
A3: Have children share about their own holiday traditions so other students can learn about different cultures. Don't center the classroom on one holiday keep the classroom lively with all of them #scitlap
A3 culture and traditions are informal chats we have all year but mostly during breaks & in smaller elective classes. Mostly we focus on food! #scitlap
A4: Exercise, tech-free time with my husband and son, guilt-free TV time late at night. Professionally, daily chats w/ @_on11. He keeps me sane, even when we embark on crazy adventures, like today. #scitlap
A4 Honestly, this is what I need to work on all year. I try to conquer one thing at a time. The computer is my time suck, but sometimes it actually relaxes me. #scitlap
A4 my immediate family is just parents & brother so we have a mellow holiday. Only 1 Lg Family Gathering. At school I just am flexible w/ so many events. Our grade level party is 3-rotation tradition & we provide ALL treats. #scitlap
A5: I work as preschool assistant teacher on breaks and during the summer and we have an annual ugly sweater Christmas party where we do a gift swap and celebrate! #scitlap
A6: Honestly, no homework ever. I hardly ever assign HW to my kids, because I feel like it's more important for me to be there with them through their work. So definitely none over break! #scitlap
A5 I usually try to bring coffee & treats during break for custodial crew. My team gets each other little goodies. I sometimes make tamales & share. This year I organized a potluck w/ selfie-booth #scitlap
A6 I not in favor of HW either. I love when kids go home and do stuff I didn't assign. And IMO break is for a BREAK, and family time, and fun! #scitlap
A5: Schoolwide holiday celebration last weekend. Staff bowling party last Monday night. Staff gift exchange next week at school (party). Door decor competition. #scitlap
A7 mostly rest, lots as caregiver 4!my parents (dr appts, paperwork, etc), probably lots of political protesting & phone calling. I do plan doing some room cleaning. Cannot stand the mess! #scitlap
Akers 7 Students celebrating CSEd Week: @codeorg activities on iPad, learning about Admiral Grace Hooper, debugging code & offline learning. Ss enthusiastic & worked hard on challenges. #akers7#admiralakers#CSEdWeek
A8 You definitely need a plan, and a back up plan, but also be flexible. If you can't focus everyone, noting wrong with playing a Kahoot or Quizlet Live #scitlap
A9 my entire team keeps the message that breaks starts 12-15 at 1pm. I just keep classes on course and keep it lively. I gotta finish unit cause 3 weeks of SexEd after break. #scitlap
Just wanted to say, I love you guys (I know it's weird, we don't actually know each other), but really... this PLN really fills me up. Even those sci-pirates not here tonight! #scitlap
