Hey all - Michael from here, looking forward to the chat tonight
Hey - I'll be following along tonight!
Hey Ben! Great time to start building that PLN
Cassandra Akers principal of a small high school in Eastern KY
Hi everyone! I'm Sarah, Digital Learning Coach in north TX.
I'm Aaron, I'm an Innovation Coach for . Can't wait to dig in.
I've already been using the materials. Good stuff. Chris from KY
welcome Sarah! Thanks for joining
Howdy, Dave here in San Francisco! Been thinking a lot about our new globaled & data
hello Jackie from CT; HS library media specialist
A1. We have found ways to make data smaller - use classroom assessments to make classroom decisions
Julie Willcott, STEM Educator from Maine, happy to be here.
"Innovation coach" is a great title! Definitely didn't have those when I was in school....
A1: We've gotten better at using data to better serve our Ss. Can use data to help them.
So important, smaller data makes data more actionable https://t.co/FJKpi9AP6H
A1. We have found ways to make data smaller - use classroom assessments to make classroom decisions
What's an example of how you are using data now?
A1. I've changed from just focusing on quarterly, monthly or yearly data to minute to minute data
A1 Data drives instruction now. It's not just numbers in a binder, only pulled out at conference time.
A1: Data is better and provides skills that we need to help Ss with. No guessing now.
Hi all, Patrick from Long Island, NY
A1- data in the classroom is faster! Instantaneous assessment can help with quick checks for understanding

Welcome to ! Tonight we will be discussing
how data is impacting teaching and learning from the guide:… https://t.co/ED86YpwV1M
A1: much more focused on useful data...can be easily overwhelmed. Frequently asking if the data shows what we truly value?
A1 - quick CFUs can help teacher plan and students get immediate feedback.
A1. I have much more appreciation for the challenges of collecting good data safely. 1/
Following along - not directly involved in any ed-related activities now, but the topic is very interesting
True! Not just data for the sake of data... https://t.co/tTcnPPev9L
A1: much more focused on useful data...can be easily overwhelmed. Frequently asking if the data shows what we truly value?
A1: I am finding as a Ss Teacher how important Data collection is to not only assess but to inform lesson planning/direction
A1: Item Analysis using program like has turned summative assessments into formative ones
A1: challenge: use data w/ fidelity; understand what it shows (and what it doesn't) to make purposeful decisions about learning
Agree. Today's challenge can be to have data understanding not just data.
ESSA is making things interesting with data... they are decentralizing the accountability. That is definitely an evolution
A1 When I entered 2.5 yrs ago thought "oh, data this will be easy! Hoover it up & use it to guide learning" 2/
Data is everywhere throughout our building on displayKids are more in the know & informed of what's needed to reach their goals
Data isn't just a number or how a student performed on a single item.

A1 I learned very quickly that it's a bit harder than that (I joined EdSurge right around the InBloom debacle) 3/3
Use of data has gone deeper, and is more up to the minute allowing us to reach more students faster!
So important that students, and not just teachers, get to see and use the data.
That reminds me of how my HS stats teacher would always say "DATA IS PLURAL!"
Hi from Pittsburgh, A1 I am more focused tools help with gathering it & I knw more how to use it to guide

Q1 coming up in 1 minute...
Data should inform everything you do! Everything!
what sort of training have you received on data collection?
A1: data focus makes me interested in the skills that data can't measure; they can't get lost in development of whole learner
yes. Data is just the information. It becomes evidence when a classroom practitioner translates it into action
A1 - there is a MASSIVE amount of data now. Using data strategically has become very important. Can become overwhelming
Some fear the word "data" but replacing it with "evidence" proves your point. No one fears evidence, right?
I've learned to look beyond correctness or "get it" in student data. Look for clues about how studs are making sense
Very good point, people can absolutely rally around evidence based https://t.co/IFVOurd2re
Some fear the word "data" but replacing it with "evidence" proves your point. No one fears evidence, right?
A1: Data collection and analysis guides everything we do. It forces us to always keep our eye on the end result.
A1. We're creating more interactive data, like this, which are blended w/Ts, Ss telling their stories: https://t.co/Sn0jc8NrJX
A2: Collecting evidence is key to making informed decisions on what’s working & what’s not. (Not just going with the gut) (1/4)
A1: More democratized, but chaotic-anyone w/surveymonkey account can design surveys, very few surveys designed well
Data has become a more efficient tool for me to assess myself from informative feedback from Ss in addition to the Forms/Graphs
A1: I have built automatic word list/quiz maker for news articles for teaching words. It's better than random SAT word list.
A1: In-depth data can give us a peak into specific student misunderstanding as opposed to just right/wrong
A2: When trying new edtech--only do in some classrooms. Classrooms w/ new edtech = treatment & w/o = control group. (3/4)
A2: Each yr Ts are asked to add one more "new" thing...w/o taking things off the plate. Need to id what's not working 2. (2/4)
A2: Now measure. Was there a difference btwn treatment and control? Use evidence to inform decision. (4/4)
A2 CFAs seem to be the most powerful for my district. Short, to the point, easy to sort based on mastery of skills
A2.MAP testing, Schoology assessments aligned to standards, even SeeSaw help us collect data. Help us guide classroom decisions
Tell me more, what does CFA stand for? https://t.co/ufZOziqJ12
A2 CFAs seem to be the most powerful for my district. Short, to the point, easy to sort based on mastery of skills
To evaluate teaching/delivery we personally use Google Forms and transfer that data into a more in-depth spreadsheet to improve

Q1 coming up in 1 minute...
A2. It's about the grain size and proximity to implementation. Sometime close & zoomed in works. Others big picture.
The first tool our school needed was TIME. 2 depts have a tomorrow where they are analyzing last year's data
Common Formative Assessment. Usually 1-2 questions based on most recent standard covered.
A2: District uses MAP. Classroom use of Seesaw to create portfolios.
Huh! I have never heard that term before. Makes sense. How do you use it?
I am in my senior year of College, so I am still learning. Just getting some ideas of different ways to do so.
but the "gut" can be calibrated by data. Can be more in tune.
A2 - NWEA MAP is a common bar for the district. Taken about quarterly and ideally informs instruction & predicts proficiency
A2 I try a variety of tools ask Ss for input eval each tool for benefits, clear data,
The might be interested in checking out
A2. And of course, lots of formative assessments is used for extremely real-time data. Changes instruction in a heartbeat.
Ts create them as preassessment and post. Preassessing drives instruction for unit, post makes sure Ss got it.
I see some folks are talking about portfolios, are people finding those as more legitimate data than they used to?
Lots of talk on about formative assessment - but no-one has mentioned benefits of retrieval practice yet
A1 We’ve developed free teacher & student surveys that measure personalized learning implementation https://t.co/jn5FHba01f
A2 - variety of tools as well. Different tools based on the intended data. i.e. Quick check vs summative etc
cool - I get the sense that there isn't a lot of formal training on data. Mostly learn as you go...
Have you found a dashboard to pull all that data together?
Q3 coming up in 1 minute...
I find student portfolios are very informative. Offers variety of assessment and hear student reflection.
A2 We’ve developed free teacher & student surveys that measure personalized learning implementation https://t.co/jn5FHba01f
A2-Time is key!We release each dept to analyze data. Last years results for trends, ACT & QC benchmarks to inform instruction
Q3 coming up in 1 minute...
A3 We use results to plan how long we need to teach certain standards. Some need more time than others, & it changes each year!
A3: Teaching 1st and 2nd there was not a day that went by that I didn't use data to change/inform my instruction
A3: as librarian, use T assessments to ID S's in need of support or challenge during co-teaching of shared standards
A3: Class area's of weakness from assts are used on future exams, Do Nows, activities
wld love to see someone make an Excel training for t's on how to do this. A lot of people do it....
A2: Clickers, app/web programs like socrative, kahoot, plickers, is awesome for this too all… https://t.co/lOgj7aPamo
Q2: What tools do you use to evaluate teaching and learning in
your district/school? What worked/what didn’t work?… https://t.co/sxioZZN28L
Yeah. My Instructors encourage us to explore what's out there. I learn a lot from edcamps and twitter tho.
deep dives into data makes some teachers act/think like data scientists
Is EdFi a state level rollout?
curious - do assessments ever say something different than what your gut already told you about a student?
A3: Assessments cannot predict a good hire. Even with so many assessment options, percentage of "bad" hires is massive!
Q3 coming up in 1 minute...
Q3 coming up in 1 minute...
Interesting shift! Do you think that is a good thing? https://t.co/XSnaSxK5ez
deep dives into data makes some teachers act/think like data scientists
A3: frequently using CFA's and others to develop interventions to meet needs of Ss.
A3: Scrap the extra content & focus on the key standards if we find Ss lack understanding content. And instruct via dif methods
agreed! It really takes mastery of the tool to use it effectively. But if you can... you can really do a lot.
A3 Look at data, find trends, reflect, work w/ indiv Ss as needed & whole class, provide support where /whn I can,
1 thing we are skipping is state testing data. Does anyone actually use that to inform instruction or is it all accountability?
let's hope we're talking qualitative data that other data has led us down dark corridors
We used it to look at which standards weren't met, so the grade before could dive deeper.
I do! I just think it requires great training. But more data skills only help! Should be required /supported more
This looks awesome! Thanks for the share!
A3: Assessment data can help maximize learning for all learners. Differentiate efficiently for AIG to EC. Time is precious!
A3 - you would be crazy not to use data to pivot in teaching and learning practices.
EdSurge: Q3 coming up in 1 minute...
thanks for raising this. We completed meta-analysis on effects of LOW STAKES retrieval practice which supports.
1st have 2 be open and vulnerable to feedback. 2nd shows us strength - weakness and forces conv on what ts do diff
Q4 coming up in 1 minute...
Q4 coming up in 1 minute...
A3: Data forces me to never settle and continue to revamp, improve, etc. It allows for positive change in teaching & learning
As part of SIP, yes. Immediate assessment requires diff data reflection. State data is important; one component.
A3 - after major assessments you can tell what you need to spiral, what skills you can continue to work on etc
Q4: In what ways do you measure soft skills and social emotional learning in your district? https://t.co/HMUUHlUTLZ
Q4: In what ways do you measure soft skills and social emotional learning in your district? https://t.co/voY8GDWh42
Q4 coming up in 1 minute...
A3 - also ASK students! Survey data and informal data can be incredibly informative. Do kids LIKE the tools?
Wow, this might be the best and most relevant question I have heard in a long time!
It's gotten better, but it's Nov 1 and we're just getting last year's data (it's partial--not completed)
A4: when data and appearance of learning differ, is it a social-emotional underlying cause? Not soft skills; critical ones
A3 - so many times we lose student voice... that's data! What are your students saying. That should be a major pivot accelerator
Students can be a great source of honest information if you listen to them.
Yes!! https://t.co/wAHRJp5tTV
A3 - so many times we lose student voice... that's data! What are your students saying. That should be a major pivot accelerator
How can we get soft skill assessment data to matter? I think it is more relevant to stu success than most academic skills

A-3 teaches mid-course corrections in the artisan teacher-#1 quality in a teacher-changing to meet the needs of S's
Definitely, I ask Ss for input, need their fdbk and it has been so helpful
Measuring SEL can be soooo challenging. Haven't found the gold standard yet. But the biggest indicator is to listen to kids.
Data is Quant AND qual. Formative AND summative. I think each have their role in the classroom and with each stakeholder
A4. We try w/ vetted rubrics. We are definitely coaching for SEL w/ various frameworks. Measuring is the sticky wicket.
So true KY uses S voice & we utilize it 3 x's a year to ensure the class environment is conducive to learning!

How you communicate your inference from data to students, admin, & parents will shape data's role, learning or other outcome
A5: Data can instill a sense of productive urgency and curiosity for students. Would be great if… (2/4)
A5: Students should be empowered w/ their data. (1/4)
A5: Learning paths are made visible to students -- where students have been, where students are headed (3/4)
A4 - I also think asking students to evaluate their own learning can be really informative. Metacognition FTW!
A4: Must everything be measured? Just make it a priority in your planning and school culture.
A5 - It is THEIR data. Students should have a major role in reviewing their learning.
Q5 coming up in 1 minute...
Greeting-purposeful, eye contact, say person's name
Share-based on ? from me, partner, whole group, ind rotation
A4 - our biggest success was Student Led Conferences.Kiddos create a portfolio representing their work. The good & the improving
"easier to measure".I wanted to remind coz teachers and schools have access to data all the time which can help.
A5: Equal responsibility (ideally). I think of as a perfect example. Ts facilitate & guide, Ss eval & change
Hi late check in but I wrote this the for on how we use data while teaching entrepreneurship https://t.co/MTqHlNWWIb
A5: Haven't been able to fully use it, but is a great tool to make assessment authentic for Ss. Make learning relevant
A4 - students tracking their own data also helps with mathematical practices. Statistics, x-y graphing, rate of change etc.
I think it is important for students to learn to use data to help answer "how might I ...?"
A5: Ss evaluate w. q's & a personalized GForm w. rubrics highlighting levels. Ss tell us what may work moving forward
I enjoyed this article Chris thx for sharing it
glad to see you too! Missed you at iNACOL
https://t.co/aMDwBkCYIa
I think if Qual data and method is documented transparently and consistently, we can argue 2 use Qual data in decision making.
A5: As a HS teacher, the hardest part is getting students to look beyond the "grade" and see growth & progress.
agreed! You could teach a whole course in middle school just about tracking data in your other classes! 💡

Tune in to now and just watch World Series Game 6 on delay (so you can FF through pitching changes and side changes)
That would actually be a fantastic exploration https://t.co/fSJRnJS31f

Agreed. Isn't the most interesting information to graph often that which is about us?
that would be really cool
yeah! I'll put it in my binder of things to think abt. Could be major part of a home room/advisory.
Let us know if you do it! We'd love to be able to share out how it goes
Q6 coming up in 1 minute...
A5: Coolest experience this yr: moderating a class discussion for creating the rubric for all classes
agreed. Teachers and students have differing needs from the data.
Yes! We all need to use our own internal "data" to make choices, why not ground that w/resources
That is awesome! https://t.co/A6fhXXF8PP

Q6: In a perfect world, how would you use and collect data? How would that impact student outcomes? https://t.co/GIKpd4ujuG
retrieval practice is basically having kids remember, preferably without cues.Quizzing & practice testing are eg.
In today's world of google, I am curious about the benefit of that?
Google gives you a ton of info. Retrieval practice over time will help ss identify what's relevant and what isn't
Q6: In a perfect world, how would you use and collect data? How would that impact student outcomes? https://t.co/USkhKhsXb9
Q6 coming up in 1 minute...
In a perfect world I think assessment/data is more PBL focused. Kids have choice, pursue a topic over time,& exhibit a product.
A6: I like a lot of the ideas tonight - let stu have a voice in what matters, design for the real world, assess early & often
A6: Perfect world data experience: all stakeholders see the long range vision beyond one test, one week, one unit, one yr
A6. It would be low-stress, result from kids creating evidence from their own pathways, findable from all sources in 1 location
A6 - PBL type assessment shows a spectrum. Every kid can succeed & show strengths. Also accountability increases w/ exhibitions
Just like the non-googleable question is important, isn't the non-quantifiable data also important?
Would love to live in a world w central collection of *direct* assessment data using instruments faculty&staff know/understand
I think so b/c we prioritize relationships above data. I think that's the basis for SEL (or can be).
Having prior knl helps students focus on higher order skills, i.e. all content learning not bad. Retrieval helps
...and assess in a variety of ways, both hard and soft.
Here are some ways sups say they have used their free Speak Up data: https://t.co/zYLH0edICd 2016 surveys open now!
Definitely! Just because the state doesn't use it yet, doesn't mean other stakeholders can't
. great answer. Path, pace and passions are all valued in your description https://t.co/R1NGoLSubL

Q6: In a perfect world, how would you use and collect data? How would that impact student outcomes? https://t.co/8klYeSBrDx
I would be interesting to get rid of assessments and design them back from the skills Ss will need in the real world
one way to think about it could be Quant = outcome, Qual = process. Can we truly choose?
A6: Side note, the data doesn't mean anything if there are not relationships and engagement. Want results? ID what motivates
Thank you so much for great conversation tonight! Thanks to for moderating & for sponsoring
We’ll be here the 1st & 3rd Tues each month. We’ll be back on 11/15 for
Yes, thank you! Always a great time - I always learn a lot!
What an awesome discussion ! Thanks & for all the fun. Who knew a data chat could be so interesting :)
...and use of centralized assessment data is then the core around which curriculum/faculty/staff development is built
