A1: project and passion based learning! #INelearn
  • GraceHilsmier Jul 19 @ 9:08 PM EDT
R1: Tough question! I think it's always important to let students lead the charge, though. We can't force them to care about an issue, but we can facilitate taking action on what is important to them. #INeLearn
  • LeeAnnHall8 Jul 19 @ 9:08 PM EDT
R1: make it meaningful! Connect content to real world scenarios and be passionate about what you’re doing #INeLearn

#INelearn A1 We had two cultural conversations this year. One with a class in Argentina 🇦🇷 about gender inequality & one in Monterrey Mexico 🇲🇽 about current events. Gave our Ss an opportunity to share and learn from their peers. Amazing to hear world opinions!
  • techiejenny Jul 19 @ 9:11 PM EDT
Q2: Prensky sees the focus on MESS (p27) or what you might think of as the core content and STEM focused learning as getting in the way of Ss accomplishments. How might this be the case? #INeLearn #BetterTheirWorld #MadisonLEAD
  • risky4 - Moderator Jul 19 @ 9:11 PM EDT
We have sent students out to local businesses and created videos to promote their messages. Ex: the local Humane Society. Great learning that benefits both Ss and community #INeLearn

#BetterTheirWorld is “Supporting New Education with Technology” but what it has to say might surprise some #INeLearn folks!
  • LeeAnnHall8 Jul 19 @ 9:15 PM EDT
R2: I’ve been reading The Book Whisperer, and Miller explains that often reading requirements get in the way of readers and their enjoyment of reading/learning. Sometimes we are so focused on results that we forget that our true goal is to make life long learners #INeLearn
  • GraceHilsmier Jul 19 @ 9:15 PM EDT
R2: I think sometimes content can get in the way the most when districts are overly prescriptive. There are a lot of creative ways to cover the standards, but not if you have to spend your time giving the same assessments or delivering a canned program. #INeLearn
  • GraceHilsmier Jul 19 @ 9:16 PM EDT
That being said, I also think there is a backdoor to meaningful learning in just about every situation if you are looking for it. #INeLearn

R2 The MESS refers to Math, English, Science and Social Studies. There are definitely opportunities for real-world accomplishment within these content areas. What gets in our way? For me, it's trying to fit in all of my Anatomy and Physiology content. #INeLearn

R3 I think kids learn their passion through technology. So many of my students have learned skills on YouTube (playing the guitar, for example). How many of you use web-based tools for exploring a passion? #INeLearn

R3: information literacy!!! We have to support info lit skills, and they become so much more authentic if we build them as Ss explore passion projects #INelearn
  • LeeAnnHall8 Jul 19 @ 9:25 PM EDT
R3: technology opens so many doors for students! It enables them to communicate both locally and globally, find information quickly, explore their passions, and ways to share what they’ve done. It’s not the solution to everything, but it sure does make things easier! #INeLearn
  • GraceHilsmier Jul 19 @ 9:28 PM EDT
Yes! And student need help discovering passions, too! I am always heartbroken by how many of my students don't have an answer to, "What is important to you?" #INeLearn

Q4: Why would a teacher become an empowerer? What’s in it for them? (pp 90-97) #INeLearn #BetterTheirWorld #MadisonLEAD
  • TaraTmckay Jul 19 @ 9:31 PM EDT
Agreed! It is sad they aren’t sure what their passions are and they need help discovering those. Technology can be a great tool in that! #INeLEARN

#INelearn A3 We have been able to bring in primary source speakers to engage our students in the study of history. They have been able to interact in q & a with these people and learn their first hand account. Been fortunate to have a majority of these speakers return each year.

  • techiejenny Jul 19 @ 9:35 PM EDT
Q5: In the conclusion of #BetterTheirWorld, Prensky offers a new metaphor for education. Our Ss are rockets and educators are rocket scientists. He states: Ts should not be blown away by their Ss accomplishments. What do you think about this perspective? #INeLearn #MadisonLEAD
  • ToddShriver Jul 19 @ 9:35 PM EDT
#INelearn A3 Also bringing in live speakers to show their craft. We have had Brad Long, Buddy from the movie Hoosiers, Philo Barnhart creator of Ariel from The Little Mermaid & Kyle Cook of Matchbox 20/Rivers & Rust. Engaging opportunity for our students.
  • LeeAnnHall8 Jul 19 @ 9:36 PM EDT
R4: A teacher should become an empowered because that’s where the most rewarding part of the job is. Goes back to that saying about teaching a man to fish. Empower students and they’ll have their whole lives ahead of them to do great things! #INeLearn
  • GraceHilsmier Jul 19 @ 9:36 PM EDT
R4: Having trouble answering this because it seems obvious! Empowering students and helping them to become empowered adults is the whole point! #INeLearn
  • Dale_Chu Jul 19 @ 9:37 PM EDT
A4: To help students gain greater agency and to become self-driven, both of which may actually help lighten the load for teachers. #INeLearn
    In reply to @techiejenny
  • risky4 - Moderator Jul 19 @ 9:40 PM EDT
T's are rocket fuel! The more interactions we can provide, the higher they go. Some rockets require different fuel. As Ts, we find it, make it our mission to launch all rockets. #INeLearn
  • LeeAnnHall8 Jul 19 @ 9:40 PM EDT
R5: we should expect them to soar! #INeLearn
  • Dale_Chu Jul 19 @ 9:40 PM EDT
A5: I like this, Jennifer. Provides a new perspective into the saying about shooting for the moon and not worrying about missing because you'll be among the stars. That's what we want for all of our students – for them to reach their highest potential. #INeLearn
    In reply to @techiejenny
  • GraceHilsmier Jul 19 @ 9:41 PM EDT
R5: Not blown away in what way? As in, not surprised? Not diminished? Not impressed? I'm going to assume the first one! Gotta always see the best in each kid! #INeLearn
  • mr_dewitt_bio Jul 19 @ 9:41 PM EDT
R5 While we should hold students to high expectations and teach them that "the sky is not the limit," I think we SHOULD be blown away by genuine accomplishment. When kids accomplish something great, we need to celebrate it! #INeLearn
  • Dale_Chu Jul 19 @ 9:42 PM EDT
You know what they say. Great minds think alike! #INeLearn 😉
    In reply to @LeeAnnHall8, @techiejenny
  • thedullguy Jul 19 @ 9:44 PM EDT
R5: The STEM teacher in me is eating this up. The rocket scientist designs the ship to get into orbit and provides the astronauts the tools they need to complete whatever job they may be called on to do in space. Then the astronauts do their thing. Dig it! #inelearn
  • dianargill Jul 19 @ 9:44 PM EDT
R5: while this is an interesting metaphor, I think I'd like to think of us in less defined roles as it relates to the metaphor. Maybe there is a time to step aside and allow Ss to be the rocket scientists, too. #INelearn
  • thedullguy Jul 19 @ 9:45 PM EDT
R5: OK, guys, put some coffee on. Lets make a filter. #inelearn

A great scene from a great movie. #INeLearn
    In reply to @thedullguy
  • thedullguy Jul 19 @ 9:48 PM EDT
Right? And there was no procedure to follow, no teacher looking over their shoulder. When the chips were down it was "let's take what we know and solve a really important problem." #INeLearn
    In reply to @Dale_Chu
  • techiejenny Jul 19 @ 9:50 PM EDT
Q6: “Don’t experiment with my kid” is not an unlikely response to transformation in education. How would you respond to this concern? #INeLearn
  • Dale_Chu Jul 19 @ 9:50 PM EDT
And real lives were at stake, which is analogous to the work all educators do to help students succeed. #INeLearn
    In reply to @thedullguy
  • GraceHilsmier Jul 19 @ 9:53 PM EDT
R6: That's a really fair question from parents. Sometimes we as educators dive in to the next exciting thing too quickly. It's important to reflect on our reasons for our choices and to be willing to change when something isn't working. (and to express that to parents) #INeLearn
  • Dale_Chu Jul 19 @ 9:53 PM EDT
A6: “Experiment” has such a negative connotation here. If you flipped it and said we’re going to be “innovative” or “creative,” I think you’d get a different reaction. #INeLearn
    In reply to @techiejenny
  • risky4 - Moderator Jul 19 @ 9:54 PM EDT
R6: Give the parents a list of the ISTE standards for students and a list of curriculum standards. Ask them which of the standards they don't want their child to know. I believe they want their child to meet them all. That's when you say let's launch this rocket. #INeLearn
  • mr_dewitt_bio Jul 19 @ 9:55 PM EDT
It's also helpful when we have data and research to back up our initiatives. Marc adds that it would be irresponsible to NOT experiment on kids. What are your thoughts? #INeLearn
    In reply to @GraceHilsmier
  • thedullguy Jul 19 @ 9:56 PM EDT
R6: In math especially there are a lot of tech tools that do the "answer-getting" for my students. I'm more interested in their thinking and their process, which is a big switch for a lot of them. Once I communicate that to parents everything has been (97.6%) cool. #inelearn
  • GraceHilsmier Jul 19 @ 9:57 PM EDT
Absolutely! I try something new every day, often teaching different class periods differently. Experimenting is essential, but so is admitting it when your hypothesis is wrong. #INeLearn
    In reply to @mr_dewitt_bio
  • LeeAnnHall8 Jul 19 @ 9:59 PM EDT
R6: I would explain that we aren’t really experimenting. We are taking the same content and just packing it in a way that is more meaningful. Perhaps it’s different, but the world we live in is different. #INeLearn
