The #INeLearn hashtag is used for both asynchronous sharing and synchronous conversations. Include #INeLearn in your tweets if you want to share resources or questions with Indiana educators and school leaders. Asynchronously, the #INeLearn hashtag provides educators across the state of Indiana a central space for sharing. On Thursday evenings beginning at 8 CST/9 EST when you use the #INeLearn hashtag, you are joining a live conversation--the #INeLearn Twitter Chat. For one hour, we interact in real time having a virtual discussion.
Welcome #INeLearn to our Twitter chat tonight discussing A Vision for the Future: Education to Better Their World . Let’s start off with some introductions. Please give your name, role and school you’re connected with. #BetterTheirWorld#MadisonLEAD
We welcome tonight's guest moderator team from #MadisonLEAD! Who is ready for #INeLearn Twitter Chat? Our topic: A Vision for the Future: Education to Better Their World https://t.co/pnAcUJPvGS
Hi Everyone! I am the Technology Integration Coach at Madison Consolidated Schools. I'm PUMPED to help @techiejenny host tonight's Twitter Chat about Education to #bettertheirworld! #INeLearn
R1: Tough question! I think it's always important to let students lead the charge, though. We can't force them to care about an issue, but we can facilitate taking action on what is important to them. #INeLearn
@risky4 Great point about project- and community-based learning! Have you had the opportunity to try some community-based learning? What were some strengths and barriers? #INeLearn
#INelearn A1 We had two cultural conversations this year. One with a class in Argentina 🇦🇷 about gender inequality & one in Monterrey Mexico 🇲🇽 about current events. Gave our Ss an opportunity to share and learn from their peers. Amazing to hear world opinions!
Q2: Prensky sees the focus on MESS (p27) or what you might think of as the core content and STEM focused learning as getting in the way of Ss accomplishments. How might this be the case? #INeLearn#BetterTheirWorld#MadisonLEAD
We have sent students out to local businesses and created videos to promote their messages. Ex: the local Humane Society. Great learning that benefits both Ss and community #INeLearn

R2: I’ve been reading The Book Whisperer, and Miller explains that often reading requirements get in the way of readers and their enjoyment of reading/learning. Sometimes we are so focused on results that we forget that our true goal is to make life long learners #INeLearn
R2: I think sometimes content can get in the way the most when districts are overly prescriptive. There are a lot of creative ways to cover the standards, but not if you have to spend your time giving the same assessments or delivering a canned program. #INeLearn
R2 The MESS refers to Math, English, Science and Social Studies. There are definitely opportunities for real-world accomplishment within these content areas. What gets in our way? For me, it's trying to fit in all of my Anatomy and Physiology content. #INeLearn
R3 I think kids learn their passion through technology. So many of my students have learned skills on YouTube (playing the guitar, for example). How many of you use web-based tools for exploring a passion? #INeLearn
R3: information literacy!!! We have to support info lit skills, and they become so much more authentic if we build them as Ss explore passion projects #INelearn
R3: technology opens so many doors for students! It enables them to communicate both locally and globally, find information quickly, explore their passions, and ways to share what they’ve done. It’s not the solution to everything, but it sure does make things easier! #INeLearn
Yes! And student need help discovering passions, too! I am always heartbroken by how many of my students don't have an answer to, "What is important to you?" #INeLearn
R3: technology is an extension of a student's thoughts, expression and connection to others. It is the way we consume, create, connect for meaning and purpose. #INeLearn
Interesting! Did you have an issue with kids not being able to fill the bracket, though? I always have a few who say sleep and food and get stuck. #INeLearn
R4: Empowering students is the successful way to teach acceptance of responsibility. When we empower, we learn with them and we watch them grow. #INeLearn
#INelearn A3 We have been able to bring in primary source speakers to engage our students in the study of history. They have been able to interact in q & a with these people and learn their first hand account. Been fortunate to have a majority of these speakers return each year.

Q5: In the conclusion of #BetterTheirWorld, Prensky offers a new metaphor for education. Our Ss are rockets and educators are rocket scientists. He states: Ts should not be blown away by their Ss accomplishments. What do you think about this perspective? #INeLearn#MadisonLEAD
#INelearn A3 Also bringing in live speakers to show their craft. We have had Brad Long, Buddy from the movie Hoosiers, Philo Barnhart creator of Ariel from The Little Mermaid & Kyle Cook of Matchbox 20/Rivers & Rust. Engaging opportunity for our students.
R4: A teacher should become an empowered because that’s where the most rewarding part of the job is. Goes back to that saying about teaching a man to fish. Empower students and they’ll have their whole lives ahead of them to do great things! #INeLearn
R4: Having trouble answering this because it seems obvious! Empowering students and helping them to become empowered adults is the whole point! #INeLearn
T's are rocket fuel! The more interactions we can provide, the higher they go. Some rockets require different fuel. As Ts, we find it, make it our mission to launch all rockets. #INeLearn
A5: I like this, Jennifer. Provides a new perspective into the saying about shooting for the moon and not worrying about missing because you'll be among the stars. That's what we want for all of our students – for them to reach their highest potential. #INeLearn
R5: Not blown away in what way? As in, not surprised? Not diminished? Not impressed? I'm going to assume the first one! Gotta always see the best in each kid! #INeLearn
R5 While we should hold students to high expectations and teach them that "the sky is not the limit," I think we SHOULD be blown away by genuine accomplishment. When kids accomplish something great, we need to celebrate it! #INeLearn
R5: The STEM teacher in me is eating this up. The rocket scientist designs the ship to get into orbit and provides the astronauts the tools they need to complete whatever job they may be called on to do in space. Then the astronauts do their thing. Dig it! #inelearn
R5: while this is an interesting metaphor, I think I'd like to think of us in less defined roles as it relates to the metaphor. Maybe there is a time to step aside and allow Ss to be the rocket scientists, too. #INelearn
Right? And there was no procedure to follow, no teacher looking over their shoulder. When the chips were down it was "let's take what we know and solve a really important problem." #INeLearn
R6: That's a really fair question from parents. Sometimes we as educators dive in to the next exciting thing too quickly. It's important to reflect on our reasons for our choices and to be willing to change when something isn't working. (and to express that to parents) #INeLearn
A6: “Experiment” has such a negative connotation here. If you flipped it and said we’re going to be “innovative” or “creative,” I think you’d get a different reaction. #INeLearn
R6: Give the parents a list of the ISTE standards for students and a list of curriculum standards. Ask them which of the standards they don't want their child to know. I believe they want their child to meet them all. That's when you say let's launch this rocket. #INeLearn
It's also helpful when we have data and research to back up our initiatives. Marc adds that it would be irresponsible to NOT experiment on kids. What are your thoughts? #INeLearn
R6: In math especially there are a lot of tech tools that do the "answer-getting" for my students. I'm more interested in their thinking and their process, which is a big switch for a lot of them. Once I communicate that to parents everything has been (97.6%) cool. #inelearn
Absolutely! I try something new every day, often teaching different class periods differently. Experimenting is essential, but so is admitting it when your hypothesis is wrong. #INeLearn
R6: I would explain that we aren’t really experimenting. We are taking the same content and just packing it in a way that is more meaningful. Perhaps it’s different, but the world we live in is different. #INeLearn
