My intro: I"m Jeremy, your host and #nt2t team member. I'm based in Connecticut, a parent who works for an education agency. I suppose Twitter is my favorite media tool!
Hello #nt2t - I’m a #medialiteracy gal at @websteru and super excited to chat re my fave topic in the world!
Been teaching it since 1997.
(I started at age 10 HAHAHA)
So as i said earlier Im Brooks Bell Im a Social Studies Ed major at the Universsity of Oklahoma I think email is my schools most used media tool along with twitter. #nt2t
Hello everyone my name is Cindy Cano. I'm a senior at Austin Peay State University majoring in education. My favorite media tool it twitter. I like that it can be used as a safe communication method in the classroom. #nt2t
As we approach the topic of media literacy today, I think of the presidency of George H.W. Bush. From Tienanmen Square to the fall of the Berlin Wall to the collapse of the Soviet Union, Bush was president during quite a series of earth-shaking historical moments. #POTUS41#nt2t

Morning, #edugladiators & #nt2t. I'm Brian. I teach middle-school students English in Colorado. I'm standing in middle of busy chat intersection where traffic buzzing around me is about blended learning & media literacy. Amid bustle, I see connections.

Whenever a former U.S. president or any world leader dies, there's reflection on the events that took place during their tenure. In today's chat, feel free to pull from those or any past or present events as we further explore media literacy in education. #GeorgeHWBush#nt2t
This chat is using the traditional question-and-answer format. I'll ask the questions with Q1, Q2, etc.; please answer using A1, A2, etc. And remember to include the #nt2t hashtag in every tweet!
Okay sorry I changed my answer. My favorite media tools are Twitter and my phone. I thought you meant like a computer program tool or software. LOL. #nt2t

A1: Hello! Sorry I’m late! My name is Alison. I am a senior at Converse College majoring in Early Chilhood Education so I’m new to a lot of things! #nt2t
Hi everyone! Late to the party as this is my first ever twitter chat! I’m Kristin ad I teach high school Family & Consumer Sciences in PA. My fav media tool to use in the classroom is Twitter. #nt2t

A1. I believe that media literacy is the ability to cut through the wall of mass media and peel back and be able to see what is truly being communicated. I know when my grandma opens up Facebook and is overwhelmed with bit mojies and memes shes, not a fan so that would be...#nt2t
A1 Blended learning involves cultivating know-how through mixed media (some in person & face to face, others digital & distant), which also demands cultivating media literacy for navigating, managing, assessing these inputs in service of subsequent outputs. #nt2t#edugladiators
A1: Well, I believe as a language major and linguist, my definition will vary. Literacy is the ability to read. Media can be a book, something digital, a newspaper, a magazine, etc. So media literacy is the ability to read those things. #nt2t
ASK QUESTIONS #nt2t
Who is the sender?
What’s their intent?
What tools are they using?
Who’s the target?
Who profits from the message?
How does msg make you FEEL?

A2: Honestly I just naturally use this in my classroom without even thinking about it. Sometimes my Ss teach me but we use this almost daily! Google Classroom, online review games, writing papers in MLA format, reading articles online, watching native speakers online...#nt2t
A2: just popping in for a moment but certainly any claims of “fake news”. How do we know? Who is the sender of the info? Who is intended as the receiver? And Why? #nt2t
I love to take apart a film with students. Going through the mechanics from the opening shot to the music, to how the dialogue happens on the screen. It's an eye-opener. #nt2t
2. That is a hard one to answer media is an ever evolving entity and that makes it hard to define examples of what you need to incorporate. I think the best thing is teaching is the who/what sent it and the why it was sent make the readers understand why it was sent out. #nt2t
A2- #nt2t. Word choice in headlines and captions. Misleading graphics & charts. How music changes mood. Psychology of color. Analyzing poll questions. Netflix & use of data ETC
I COULD GO ALL DAY.....!😂
Hi my name is Cammy Ravenscroft and I teach science in Colorado! Twitter is a great way to communicate on a larger platform around the world! #Nt2T#SVVSDTechBingo
I would love to sit in your class! Huge film fan. It's amazing how much we receive passively without analyzing it. Everything is designed to manipulate in some way! #nt2t

A2) Incorporating as many different sources as possible into the classroom could only be beneficial. Students could also compare and contast messages and purposes. #nt2t
Misinformation has been around forever. NOW
-it travels at lightspeed
- we are in echo chambers
- we can create legit looking stuff
- we dont trust trad media anymore
#nt2t
Understanding the process of creating is important. In news, for example, one should understand the time constraints, the news gathering process, the news hole and technical considerations. #nt2t
A2 Hyperdocs are great for self-paced & blended learning. By connecting learners w/all different kinds of media (whether curated by teacher or found by students themselves), hyperdocs offer abundant opportunities for honing media-literacy skills. #nt2t#edugladiators
A2: Especially now that Christmas advertising is in full force, watching ads or social media clickbait could be a cool way to see how consumerism affects/shapes the holiday itself around here 🤭😰😟 #Nt2t
A2 Since I plan on teaching elementary school, showing something like PBS News to then lead discussions on what is going on currently could help my students understand media literacy. #nt2t
A2 Since I plan on teaching elementary school, showing something like PBS News to then lead discussions on what is going on currently could help my students understand media literacy. #nt2t
But there is bias right there. There is an assumption that PBS news is exalted. Better to take one story and look how it is reported in several arenas. #nt2t
Have to bail - so sorry - #nt2t. But keep spreading the #medialiteracy goodness! And feel free to order my book - I have two kids in college and no shame! 😂

#nt2t
And a good way is to show how easy students can create fake news. Let them create some fake news and look for real news online - then in a second step: they have to find out what are the real and what are the fake news. So you support critical thinking. #medialieracy#nt2t
Oooh! Give students stats and then ask them to create misleading charts/graphs based on stats. Only true objective numbers in news are sports scores and temps! How are numbers used in other stories, and why? #nt2t
A3: I would normally say Spanish but already addressed in Q2. So I will say computer science for which I just came out of a chat. My gears are turning... how about having Ss code a program for aiding the organization of the Caravan after reading an article about it? #nt2t
A3 I think that History could be an interesting subject to apply media literacy I can not tell you how many times my friends tell me some random thing they heard in history without baacking up the information
#nt2t
In my intermediate literacy class, we studied the text features of National Geographic News and Scholastic Weekly readers as other possibilities. #nt2t
Or, a discussion about how too many reporters don't even understand the scientific method. Too often reporters look at a study as definitive instead of a piece of understanding. #nt2t
A1-media Literacy is very important as we use technology more and more to teach the most current information. Gone are the days of old outdated textbooks! A2-Students need to be able to filter what the read online since anyone can post to the web. #Nt2T#SVVSDTechBingo
I think media literacy can be embedded in every subject. I would use media as a tool for research in my classroom. I would use mystery Skype in my classroom to allow my students to make real-world connections. This would be great for social studies and history projects. #nt2t

#nt2t
And here is another resource:
https://t.co/ifz6d6SVq4
Students can check news. Think it's essential that students now how to check if they are not sure if it's fake or not.
#medialiteracy#nt2t
So how would you relate that to the climate change reports? I'd think part of the lesson would be putting any one report in the larger context of previous findings. #nt2t
A3 Incorporate choice into blended learning opportunities in order to personalize them, which also opens doors to both obvious & unexpected interdisciplinary opportunities. #nt2t#edugladiators
After recently learning of Mystery Skype, I can’t wait to use this with my International Cooking class to allow them to make real connections to the other cultures we are discussing #nt2t
A1) media literacy is directly related to the ability to view and process media information and determine its validity, while also contrasting how events are portrayed differently through media and in reality #nt2t
Oooh! Give students stats and then ask them to create misleading charts/graphs based on stats. Only true objective numbers in news are sports scores and temps! How are numbers used in other stories, and why? #nt2t
Climate change is so thorny. Honestly, I have learned friends in this area who don't agree with one another. I think I would bring it right down to the community level. or look for a citizen science project. #nt2t
A4: While I would use mainstream news sources and social media platforms for older students, you could use rough pop-up ads or internet traps that appear obviously fake to adults, but younger students must learn to be wary of #nt2t
A4: I don't know about younger students, but my Spanish class is college prep. Reading news articles online is timely, educational, and future ready preparation. Prevalent as theme in my mind all morning today is the current political environment near the CA border. #nt2t
A4. I feel older students can view various media sources on their own and dialogue can occur in the class. Younger students the watching and dialogue occurs in the class. Topics will be different as well #nt2t
A1-media Literacy is very important as we use technology more and more to teach the most current information. Gone are the days of old outdated textbooks! A2-Students need to be able to filter what the read online since anyone can post to the web. #Nt2T#SVVSDTechBingo
But there are scientists who deny it too. I honestly believe teachers should teach with little to no bias the same as we want reporters to report with little to no bias. #nt2t
How do we determine "truth"? The earth is round, check. The earth revolves around the sun, check. The earth has varying climate, check. The climate change is also human caused... at what point do we decide it's not objective truth? Everything required evidence to convince. #nt2t
A4: Just had a thought--choosing who to follow on social media requires the same evaluative strategies contained in media literacy. Necessary for all ages. #nt2t
A4: Just had a thought--choosing who to follow on social media requires the same evaluative strategies contained in media literacy. Necessary for all ages. #nt2t
A5: Again I am being a bit of a rebel here but you can identify with that right Jeremy? :-) I think it's important that especially during this month we remind ourselves and others do not let consumerism take control. Get off social media and go have a live conversation. #nt2t
I love this! You could do this in the classroom and make your own profiles and ask students if they should follow them or not based on the information. #nt2t
A4: Just had a thought--choosing who to follow on social media requires the same evaluative strategies contained in media literacy. Necessary for all ages. #nt2t
I think we need to challenge students to make choices as they will at the ballot box. Not proselytizing but presenting differing views. Media literacy is about data. #nt2t
Another interesting question. In science we are always aiming to reach truth, no? Yet, with every new dinosaur bone found, for example, we have to go back and re-examine what we thought we knew. #nt2t
Great point. At the same time, we have to follow someone for a while to really know them. Sometimes you take the good with the (perceived) bad... none of us is a perfect source! #nt2t

Q5) You could turn the ads into a lesson how the price shown may not be the total price. Have then calculate tax and percentages. Discuss how it can be distorted. #nt2t
A4-Younger students would need media that has more pictures & captions with less complicated links & older students could access more text & would embrace the social aspect. I agree younger students would need role modeling of the process of interpreting.#Nt2T#SVVSDTechBingo
A5: easiest way - create a game (test knowledge). But in my opinion it's more effective to let students be producers - perhaps like storytelling. Let them combine true and fake elements and make other students guess. Visual storytelling with @AdobeSpark is easy.
#nt2t
In first grade, my students are still learning how to read and write. The media I present them must be more straight forward and kid friendly. Older students should be able to access different forms of media with less restrictions. #nt2t
A2) example: crime is reported on the basis of race/ethnicity in many countries. Media fails to report the more realistic number of crimes committed by Caucasian citizens in the US but amplifies the image of non-Caucasian/immigrant crimes, which mimics xenophobia #nt2t
Okay. Last thought. We love birds in our house. Audubon always releases reports on the state of birds and Cornell has Citizen Science projects coming up including feeder watch. https://t.co/dwCtBMv6S6#nt2t
Good morning everyone
What is helpful for teaching but also having to learn the curriculum of all the different subjects for an elementary classroom teacher? Any insight is greatly appreciated. #Nt2t#satchat#nt2v#elemchat#ntchat

I don't actually drink coffee, but this was the only Spanish "Good Morning" Bitmoji. LOL. I am a HSs Spanish T in Angola. IN. I do not believe I have a favorite media tool. I am familiar with Newsela.
Well, I grew up without Christmas (am Jewish), but my mother made a bigger thing out of Hanukkah (which starts tomorrow night, everyone!) so we wouldn't feel left out... commercialism is a big part. But as a family (where we have a birthday in the middle) we balance it all. #nt2t
In Italy they do not report crimes committed by people with Italian blood. They expose non-Italian criminal activity, in turn making it seem like Italians do not commit as many crimes. They are a true xenophobic country. In reality the crimes are just not equally reported. #nt2t
A6). A school could work with an outside source that focuses on educating young people on media. My university brought in an alum who’s job is to evaluate people’s social media to determine if they are good fit for their company. Just an example. #nt2t
A6: for me, media literacy is best taught in groups because the best learning effect lies in discussing the problem, the effects of media, e.g. advertising. It's always the best way to get students thinking if you get them talking.
#nt2t
Students should be aware of the deficiency in the reports, and understand that more is happening than the media allows them to know. It can be a matter of taking on personal research to fill in those gaps. #nt2t
A5, having students make their own advertising and what they think is the most important aspect of Dec. is it the toys being pushed by ads or the time spent with family and friends. #nt2t
A6 Use media (video conferencing, say, or social channels) to make it easier to invite print & digital media makers into classroom spaces. Chances to acquire pro tips, ask questions, build school-world bridges. #nt2t

A6: Our local newspaper reporter often comes to write articles about our Spanish club. It got me back into reading the newspaper again, and I often have her articles laminated and post them outside my classroom for our Ss to read. #nt2t
Challenge) We live in a media-saturated environment. Share a lesson you've learned from your experience as a media consumer, and how you can ensure the next generation benefits from your experience.
You can answer the challenge anytime in the days after the chat. Include #nt2t!

A4) I think older generations have the personal experiences in living through historical events to understand what goes on in media, but have a technological disadvantage. Younger people have the technology to do research required to evaluate sources and determine validity. #nt2t
Thank you Jeremy for the great media literacy chat today! I loved how you didn't let it get political and you let us Branch off into all divers and avenues and definitions of media literacy. #nt2t
A5: What about a Christmas Newspaper - about activities in class, information for parents, little games, puzzles and funny pics.
Could be an idea to teach media literacy in a creative and productive way for students.
#nt2t
Yay, newspapers! As a journalism grad who wrote for newspapers for a while, I have a soft spot. ;)
Admittedly, today I find the digital versions more convenient. But let's never stop laminating! #nt2t

A6) it could be very beneficial to bring in people from various careers to supplement lessons on media literacy. Research analysts, reporters, and journalists could all share different perspectives on how media is portrayed and perceived. #nt2t
It was way too fast for me to steer it in any particular direction! Which is unnecessary when the conversation is vibrant. Thanks for being here, Gwena. #nt2t
