A1: How to work with different students and different personalities. Each student handles things differently, works and learns differently.
Didn’t learn that in undergrad!
#gfedchat
Jared Becker, PE Discovery Elementary. I teach because I live an active lifestyle and I want to promote this lifestyle with the younger generations. #gfedchat
A1: I've really learned that kids crave an adult who will listen, narwhals are real, and I need to put myself ahead of my work a little more often. #gfedchat
A1A: I have really learned things from which are hands-on and relevant to my interests. These items were relevant and meaningful. #gfedchat#trialanderrors
Kristy Page, School Psychologist RRHS, Community HS, Adult Transition Program, RMAC, Twining, and Lake Agassiz. I love working with kids of all ages and supporting Ss. Kids also give me positive energy #gfedchat
A1: Relationships first!! I've learned what a difference it can make when you really have strong relationships with your students.. and them with each other #gfedchat
A1 - I've learned that this profession isn't JUST about teaching standards - it's so much more than that. Students don't care what you know until they know that you care. #gfedchat
I have really learned that teaching is not the easiest thing to do. There is a lot of planning and outside work needed to accomplish all desired tasks #gfedchat
Andee Thompson 3rd grade>Discovery. I teach because there is no better job! You get to work with kids, listen to laughter, learn and every day is different! #gfedchat
#gfedchat
A1B: Learned from a family member. Two teachers really made a difference. The rest of learning on own or exploratory. Driving, Farming, cooking, fixing something, etc...
Jennifer Neil joining, Kelly, 3rd grade, I teach in hopes of making a difference, be a part of and give back to my community, and to share joy! #gfedchat
A1: I have learned that teaching is not for the weak of heart. This profession takes a lot of time and metal toughness. The work day is never over, the care and dedication is never gone and the will to do more is always there.
#gfedchat
Britta Meza, Elem. Tech Partner, one of the reasons I teach is for Ss that may not have as much support at home and need a champion to help them know they can succeed! #gfedchat
A1 I have learned that the small day to day connections that you make with your students may be just the thing that they needed to make it through the day. Compassion and Understanding.#gfedchat
A1: To listen, not judge, and accept the fact that I cannot help every Ss no matter how I try, but as long as I give it 110% that's all I can do #gfedchat
A1 I have learned that the small day to day connections that you make with your students may be just the thing that they needed to make it through the day. Compassion and Understanding.
#gfedchat
A1B: My parents taught me to work hard. They started out broke and worked through the hard summers & winters with farming and were very successful at raising 5 kids without assistance. #gfedchat
A1B: Our Ss have taught me how much they need an adult to listen & that narwhals are real. Experience has taught me that I need to take better care of myself #gfedchat
A2: I always like seeing the kids teach the concept to someone else because that shows they understand and can explain it. This is also the best way to engrain the knowledge into your head. #gfedchat
A2b: By trying to get away from strictly memorizing information that they will forget the next day. Try to create projects to demonstrate and explain their thinking. #gfedchat
A2: when students take the concepts/requirements and create something that they didn't even know that they could do. You see and hear when they talk about their artwork! #gfedchat
A2: they apply it, can teach it, and can tell me the answer using their own words...more importantly answer why—the deeper question and not just the surface answer #gfedchat
It is hard to ensure that Ss master what they study. Ss appear to understand the content, however some will forget everything by the time you want to assess their new knowledge. #gfedchat
I guess you can't always be certain there is mastery of a concept - but I think to be sure there's forward progress is important. It depends on the skill, but it's also important to revisit in different ways and at different times.
#gfedchat
A2b: Giving them multiple opportunities to learn the activities. With athletics, you don’t master the curriculum, you continue to work and continue to get better. Practice, practice, practice. And then more practice.
#gfedchat
A2b: when I see them using the skill in natural settings. Also using a rating system, allowing them to rate themselves if they need more practice or if they feel like they could help a friend. #gfedchat
Ashley Stavnes, GFC FACS. I teach because I feel fulfilled by working in an environment that supports lifelong learning. I want to instill a love for learning in my students #gfedchat
A2b: Giving students multiple tries/opportunities to practice certain skills and provide them more opportunities to demonstrate their learning. #gfedchat
A2B: For mastery, maybe you look for Ss who are able to integrate that knowledge into their everyday lives. Do they reference it? Do they connect it to new learning? #gfedchat
A2: I believe that in order for someone to convince me that they have learned something they would have to explain it and teach it to others.
#gfedchat
A2B: I can ensure that Ss master what they study by having Ss apply their knowledge in a topic to real life situations. This could be done at the beginning of class, and right after class.
#gfedchat
A3: Doing units that relate to each other. Throwing a football is very similar to throwing a baseball. Allowing the students to have many chances to work on the skill. #gfedchat
A3: Ideally, we keep building on those skills as the year goes on. Hopefully, they continue to apply those earlier skills to aid in retention. #gfedchat
A3: retesting=reviewing. This is something that is a continuous thing all throughout life. At times we have to retest ourselves before we teach it to students. #gfedchat
A3: I don't really "re test" the knowledge but I try to build upon the knowledge as much as possible so that they are using it/applying it often. I think it "sticks" better that way #gfedchat
A3: Regression is real and occurs more than we would like to see. It is difficult to watch Ss work hard towards a goal just to lose the progress over the summer months. We often reteach 5 months of curriculum to recoup the skills. #gfedchat
A3 - I feel that in Head Start we are constantly revisiting skills and concepts all day long, everyday, all year long. We never just focus on just one thing. #gfedchat
A3: Building onto the each of the lessons throughout the year. Let them practice different variations of a similar skill. Just providing more opportunities for them to practice #gfedchat
A3: My subject, kids build upon their previous knowledge and keep building. Re-testing would be nice if I had the students back to back years like I use to do with Keyboarding in 7th and 8th grade computer apps. #gfedchat
A3- I don't necessarily retest, but we are constantly referring to previous lessons and building on the material we know by comparing and contrasting countries to one another. #gfedchat
A2B: I always incorporate some time for Ss to practice the skill I'm teaching them, model it & review it. I certainly see voids in student mastery of #SEL skills, but we'll keep practicing! #gfedchat
Fairly often, some of my Ss think they know the material and never ask questions to further guide them. When it comes to assessments, it is then I realize the re-assessing/teaching the concepts is needed. Assessments are check points #gfedchat
A3: I allow students to retake things as per our grading policy. It's successful in that their grade typically improves...some seem to understand the material more, but not all. #gfedchat
A3:
Most of my assignments are practical hands on items. Not a lot of retakes given. I think if Ss know the the expectation is that they get it the first time it dramatically cuts down on going over things again and again!
#gfedchat
A3:This is a required and very necessary task that is done for any of my Ss.Many of them say they understand what is going on in class but do not show they do when they are tested on the material.Retesting, teaching and assessing Ss for each new topic is highly needed.
#gfedchat
Q3: The skills that are taught in my class are progressive, they build on each other. If I have to re-teach a skill, students will usually “pick it up”. #gfedchat
Q3: This happens but it is not just the student that learns from re-teaching/re-testing. We as teachers can learn that we may need to look at a different way to teach that particular subject. A learning opportunity for both individuals.
#gfedchat
A3: Agreed! Ss have a lot of testing already, so I'd rather find other ways than just a test to help Ss recall information and continue to build on it. #gfedchat
A3: I don't really "re test" the knowledge but I try to build upon the knowledge as much as possible so that they are using it/applying it often. I think it "sticks" better that way #gfedchat
Laura Manstrom, I teach FACS at Valley. I became a teacher because I love helping people. My mom is also a teacher and she shaped my love for helping others #gfedchat
A3: pre and post test for every new math skill being taught, retest those who needed researching but build on those skills as the years goes on #gfedchat
A1a. I've learned that to be my best self/teacher I have to be present and focused on who is in front of me and not on all the things on my to-do list. #gfedchat
A3: It should be information they can apply and not just memorize and purge. Ss want to know why they need to learn the information presented, so it needs to be applied #gfedchat
A3: I think I am constantly doing this, taking data and progress monitoring to ensure Ss are making improvements and being able to carryover what they have learned. #gfedchat
I honestly do not think all Ss are prepared for life. It is not until high school that they are hit with the reality of life. They learn that not everything is given to them and that they must work towards their goals earn them. #gfedchat
A4: I think students would be more prepared without standardized testing because it would be more about the knowledge for life and career rather then knowledge for a test #gfedchat
A2: I know that someone really knows something when they can explain it to others. It makes me happy when kids help each other without my direction and they just get it. #gfedchat
A4: to be honest, I think we are getting students ready to go on to more school, but you are not getting them ready for reality. Like making calls on insurance, how to balance a check book, just how to live life in general. #gfedchat
A4I feel that there may be someSs that are prepared for life outside of school but there are many othersthat are notMany have not been heldto the higher standard that they needto be held toMany do not have the college readiness because schoolsare not set up like college
#gfedchat
A4: I am terrible with tests but I was ready for college and actually did better in college than high school. I feel the tests and admissions don't really tell how the student is and it's just another hoop to jump through. #gfedchat
A4: My hope if we didn't need to prepare for college/standardized tests, is that we would have much more well-rounded individuals and more prepared for life in general. There would be more time to practice basic life skills and to find joy in the arts! #gfedchat
A4: Our Ss may have academic skills (college readiness) but many are not prepared with practical SEL & relationship skills. Too many Ss see grades & praise as the end game rather than learning from experiences and critique. #gfedchat
A4 - I wish we could do away with standardized testing, to be honest. I don't find it to be an accurate representation of what Ss know and the amount of time we spend on Standardized testing is sad. That time could be so better spent on something else. #gfedchat
A4- Not necessarily. Strong work ethic is required for success at life and career. Strictly knowing content will only take you so far. We need innovation, striving for excellence, bettering their community. Things we tend to not have enough time to make a priority. #gfedchat
Q4 - You can qualify for college but not be socially ready for those responsibilities. I think perseverance is an under-valued skill. Of course, tests don't teach that! It's hard to know what changes would be best, but nothing is perfect.
#gfedchat
A4: Its difficult to answer this, I don’t think students are prepared for college, or life. I still have no idea how to do my taxes, and took me a few years to be prepared for college by balancing life with school.
#gfedchat
A3: I retest and give more time for things when I can see my students struggling. I pushed back tomorrow’s lesson because my kids were lost today when we were sewing and they need more help. #gfedchat
A4: many Ss are not fully prepared for the real world and have many lagging skills, we should move away from standardized testing and move toward teaching SEL skills and other skills Ss actually need to be able to be fully present and ready to learn in the classroom #gfedchat
A4: I understand the reason 4 testing, however looking at it from an elem. perspective, hours of testing in the same month is VERY overwhelming. As a T, I get to a point of having Ss take a guess and move on as they lose focus/patience about 15-20 minutes into the test. #gfedchat
A3. I think the more successful idea would be to re-teach, not re-test. I use re-testing for when a student didn't understand something or had a bad day. That is for their grade, not retention. Finding another way for them to grasp the concepts is for retention. #gfedchat
A4: Teaching to the test would be a thing of the past. Ss learn from the same materials and apply what they need to life. Relationships, social/emotional learning, and street smarts are just as valuable as book smarts. #gfedchat
A4: We may not spend as much time worrying about information and materials that don't help our Ss become better students and citizens! I know a lot of great citizens that never attended college!!
#gfedchat
A4: We would have a more diverse group of Ss and more Ss that are successful with a positive mindset vs strategy to get the grade. Not always, some Ss are book smart, but have a lot to learn in other areas #gfedchat
A4: get rid of standardized tests so we can focus more on life skills and getting students ready for life after high school. CTE bridges that gap a little but we need to focus on it more. #gfedchat
A4: I think we are doing better in preparing Ss for life with project-based learning and Genius Hour to explore their passions, but still failing to teach them a lot of life skills. #gfedchat
A4 - our preschool students do not participate in standardized testing but as a mother of a senior, I'm not sure he is prepared for the real world and I don't think any standardized testing will prepare him for it #gfedchat
A5:Ts get burnt out because of the amount of time they put into their work. They also get burnt out from the constant struggle of Ss/Ps relationships. Ts keep teaching because they enjoy working with Ss and want to help make Ss more successful in life.
#gfedchat
Q4: I think there would be a change because when kids get to high school, the focus is on “getting into” college. I don’t think that a lot of students are really prepared for the “real world”. #gfedchat
Q4: I unfortunately think that students today are not fully prepared for living off on their own. I read an article about “boomerang” kids...there is an alarming percentage of kids who return home because of not being ready for the “real world”. #gfedchat
A5: Teachers feel burnt out when they feel like their voice is not being heard! I get strength every day when I see one of my Ss have any kind of little success!!
#gfedchat
A4: I don't think many students are fully prepared for the real world, some have more skills that are lagging, but I do think standardized testing at a young age can be overwhelming, and make students lose focus. #gfedchat
A5: What burns me out is lack of consistency and that other teachers don't always do what they are suppose to do. What gives me strength is that these kids come to me every day, make me laugh, and want to learn more about my content! #gfedchat
One thing is the changing times. It once used to be thought that the Ss were the ones that needed to fix their ways/act. Now it appears that Ts are the reason Ss are not succeeding in the classroom. This constant pressure to avoid these confrontations burns out Ts. #gfedchat
A5 - challenging behaviors and feeling as if there is never enough time to get everything done -- our passion for teaching and children is what keeps us going #gfedchat
A5: Burnout comes from having too much to do, large student numbers, inadequate support, & increasing student needs. Strength to keep going comes from the small victories & colleague encouragement. #gfedchat
A4. I literally teach a class called Life Skills so I hope I'm doing a good job.. but I don't think it's every teacher's job to explicitly teach life skills. School would be more broad, and maybe hit-or-miss if we didn't have standardized testing. #gfedchat
A5: burn out happens because of the lack of support from higher admin. If the people you work for don’t support you 100% you can get really sick of it really fast. #gfedchat prevent it by giving the teachers what they need!!
A5 - Behaviors and there's always so much to do, but not enough time to do it. I get my strength from my family, friends, and having faith that it will all be ok. #gfedchat
Q5 Disrespectful behavior from students (and no backup from home) is an epidemic problem. Perseverance and optimism and love for teaching keeps us going.
#gfedchat
A5: SEE ANSWER A1, SEE ANSWER A1B.
Just kidding, being overwhelmed with paperwork, and behaviors tend to burn out teachers. Being underappreciated from friends, family may have a factor also. The students give me strength to come to work the next day! #gfedchat
A5- I think we get burnt out from lack of support and student who just want to do the bare minimum. What gives me strength is student that were in my class that stay connect because of the relationships we made. #gfedchat
Q5: The biggest burnout reason for teachers is not feeling appreciated/heard from administration. Strengths for teachers are positive feedback from administration and parents. #gfedchat
A5: Burnout=Time spent before, during, after contract time trying to support the most difficult students while worrying about not reaching the quiet ones that don't draw attention to themselves. Increase in needs, #s, and not enough of the proper support #gfedchat
Q5: I think what makes teachers burnout is being overworked, under valued, and disrespected. What gives teachers strength is seeing/hearing the learning from their students. #gfedchat
A5: Ts burn out when the expectations become unrealistic along with multiple S behaviors that make it so Ts cannot actually teach. Strength comes from feeling heard/supported by coworkers, admin, and parents. #gfedchat
A5: Too many expectations placed on Tt in and out of the classroom. Not enough time to complete the expectations. Having to comply with some expectations that are not practical. A tough group of Ss with little support.
If we are given support, family, and faith. #gfedchat
A5: never having enough time, ever increasing standards, negativity, feeling undervalued. we keep coming back because of that 1 Ss that almost has it, that 1 Ss that needs school because it is a safe place...
#gfedchat
A5 It is inspiring and motivational to see students learning, making gains. It is frustrating to go backwards, to see students regress even when we cannot do anything abou it #gfedchat
A5: Ts burn out because we take our jobs home. Planning, grading, worrying about our kids doesn't confine itself to the work day. Things that keep Ts going: supportive admins and fellow Ts; seeing progress from our Ss; great books, conferences, PD; snow days ;) #gfedchat
A5. Seeing students who need more than we can give them, apathetic coworkers, parents who think it's our job to teach their children things parents should be teaching them, taking on too many clubs/activities/committees/etc.. Having the support of my admin, coworkers #gfedchat
A5: I think Ts have different reasons for feeling burnt out. For me personally, my biggest frustration is the high demands on 5/6 year olds. So much expected and one of the most important things in their lives is socializing and playing (which is LEARNING)! #gfedchat
A5: burnout: Ss require emotional support during times when you are service other ss with additional needs, documentation/paperwork +seeing success in ss, connections with colleagues #gfedchat
A5: I've felt bits of burnout due to parent issues and always feeling the need to fight for music to stay in schools. This was a bigger issue at my previous position, but it's still something always on my mind. The students keep me strong! #gfedchat
A4Some of the most useful information that I learned in HS is what I learned in life skills. I think that so often we teach s's information that they memorize for the test but they will not use the rest of their life. We all need to pay taxes, cook meals, add/sub, etc.
#gfedchat
A5: - burnout caused from heavy behaviors in the classroom, unrealistic expectations, no support - strength supporters/coworkers who encourage, strong school community, feeling heard, teamwork “our kids” #gfedchat
A6: Passing on my passion for athletics/sports/games to the younger generation. Giving them the opportunities that were given me to be successful in team and individual sports. #gfedchat
A6: Passion has always been for the underdog. Supporting, advocating, while building the skills so one day they can support the underdog. Building better humans, one at a time. #gfedchat
A6: Making a difference for the students. I may only get some kind of feedback/confirmation that I've done this for a few Ss each year, but I'd like to think there are many more that are also progressing but I haven't seen it yet. #gfedchat
A6: Danielle S you are right on!!
anielle Swangstue @DSwangstue

A6: Passion has always been for the underdog. Supporting, advocating, while building the skills so one day they can support the underdog. Building better humans, one at a time. #gfedchat
A6:My passion is showing Ss that you can have countlesspeople tell you that you will never amount to anything in life or that you would be lucky to evengraduatehighschoolbut toprove them wronghad many teachers at a youngage that never believe in me and would put medown
#gfedchat
A6: My passion is being active and involved with sports. I love to show my students that being active is fun and giving them opportunities for them enjoy them as well #gfedchat
My passion is sharing my passion about learning with all. I used to be a S that would loathe going to school and being at it. I regret not showing more enthusiasm in school. #gfedchat
A6: I really want to and like helping my staff and students which is why I'm looking at administration. I think our schools can do better and I want to help that movement. #gfedchat
A6: My passion is preparing Ss to be successful, independent citizens. My definition of success is not how much money you make or how smart you are, but to be able to independently enjoy what you do, appreciating who you are with, and making a difference in the world #gfedchat
A6: my passion for education stems from the content I teach in FACS. I think that what I teach is important and I love love love those topics. They make me happy. #gfedchat
It is hard to say. Educators need to find a way to reach these students positively, however it appears to be difficult as Ss appear to be limitedly focused on other things in life. I call it, the digital age. #gfedchat
A7: inspiring Ss to always try to figure out the “why or how” of things in life. Education is something which no one is able to ever take away from you. #gfedchat
A7:Education could be more geared toward creative learning and stop being so scripted in its lesson planning. Ts would find it more fun and Ss would be more engaged. Education could catch up with the ever so fastly changing times.
#gfedchat
A6: My passion that connects me to education is relationships. I enjoy getting to know my students and finding out what makes them tick. I'm a firm believer that Ss will remember how we made them feel far longer than they will remember what we taught them.#gfedchat
A6. My passion that connects my life to education is that I love learning about things I am interested in. I want my students to know that learning doesn't just have to be about what we want them to learn and it doesn't have to be in a classroom to be great! #gfedchat
Q7: Education plays a part for every student because each student will/can have enjoyment in school when they make a connection with a class/teacher/content. #gfedchat
A7- By letting go and adapting with the times. If you can make your classwork connect with the kids, they will enjoy it and remember it for a lifetime. #gfedchat
Q7: I think education can make the future brighter for today’s students if we as teachers take the time to construct highly engaging lessons/activities. #gfedchat
A7: I feel we just need to get the kids as ready as possible. Coming from CTE, would like to find the child's strength and push them towards those careers where they can find success! #gfedchat
A7: "Best of Times" for Ss in the future could mean building on strengths now. Take the passions, accept them, and encourage them to think out of the box. #gfedchat
A7: Let them have take more classes that will prepare the students for their future and whats interests them. Find out what the students are interested in #gfedchat
A7. Conversations between teachers and students that let them know that they have a say in their future. It is guided by adults/teachers but they have the ultimate say. They are not helpless bystanders. And help them learn to have conversations that get them places #gfedchat
A7: continue to change with the times/students and ignite passion in students, develop those relationships, they remember how you made them feel #gfedchat
A7: Change our focus to appreciating Ss for their strengths and passion and guiding them that way regardless of what society defines as success #gfedchat
A7: By giving the student more opportunities to find what they are passionate and guiding them along they way to be successful, preparing them outside the school walls #gfedchat
A7: Teachers should find a way to reach each and every student where they are at. Celebrate what they are able to do and inspire them to do those things that they can't.
#gfedchat
