Joy McCourt, flipping HS science and math lessons since 2013 in Toronto. Favourite sign of spring is a sky that’s actually blue and not grey; I like robins but they have been an unreliable sign in my experience :P. #flipclass
Well be using a Q1/A1 format to try to keep the conversations straight. Please chime in with questions and comments. Q1 is coming in a minute. #flipclass
Hello #FlipClass! I teach bio & enviro to self-contained, diploma-track high schoolers with IEPs! Years flipping? HA! I’m here to find ways to make flipping a reality in my class... My favorite first sign of spring is SPRING BREAK! 🛌🏖🧖🏼♀️
Happy Monday and welcome to #flipclass chat. Please introduce yourself, subject, level, yrs flipping? March is almost here, what is your favorite first sign of spring?
A1: in my 8th grade history/govt class, I estimate an average of 30-50% group work in some form (including pairs) ... but certain weeks it's about 100% of each day's class period! #flipclass#flipclasschat#dualhashtags
A1: I spend the majority (~75%) of my #flipclass group space time in group work - students collaborating to solve problems, complete labs or work through challenges & application of knowledge
Sometimes starting small can help - flip a lesson here, a lesson there, you and the students can build up as you need. I’m trying to find recording time around my own children though so there’s that...#flipclass
Hey guys! Vanessa, middle school social studies, haven't done a flipped model yet but I am interested in integrating it into my classroom! #flipclass favorite part of spring= warmer days.
A1: Maybe between 70-80%. I try to make most activities group work. Being able to collaborate is an important skill. Students typically work in groups of 2 or 3 #flipclass
A1 Hmm...maybe 30-40%? Sometimes the students have options to work alone or in groups - the introvert in me likes to give the introverts in them the choice sometimes (but not always) #flipclass
A1: Unless we're taking a test, I always encourage my students to work in small groups or pairs. I think it's important for them to be able to work together and bounce ideas back and forth as part of the learning and problem solving process #flipclass
A1: I haven’t implemented #flipclass in my own classes yet, as I find a lack of internet access/computers at home a large barrier. Currently we use 1/3 of our time for “flipped learning” as a center, 1/3 of our time in group work, and 1/3 of our time extending independently.
I would definitely consider Socratic Seminars group work! Students are doing the heavy lifting by working in groups to discuss answers to various questions. It also gives them the opportunity to learn from one another and that is exactly what group work does #flipclass
Yeah, that's it! Except I call them Horseshoe Discussions, because as a claustrophobe I find the classic fishbowl setup to be uncomfortable. (And of course I made a video to introduce them to Ss: https://t.co/bTn76YCrMZ) #flipclass#flipclasschat
I have found the 'in-class-flip' to be a great use of my #flipclass for classes with large numbers of computer access issues! Have you found success in yours?
We have access to computers/internet in my classroom thankfully! I would love to expand my bio resources for students in that center. Right now it is mostly videos with some readings and interactives... could use more help there though #flipclass
Oh...favorite first sign of spring: daffodils. But I always feel sorry for them, cause they only last till the next freeze. Or maybe I should say robins; I actually start looking for them before the daffodils. #flipclass
besides group discussions: think-pair-share, Structured Academic Conversations (this week), and things like a recent "design-a-interactive-museum-exhibit" small group task #flipclass#flipclasschat
A1: Unless we're taking a test, I always encourage my students to work in small groups or pairs. I think it's important for them to be able to work together and bounce ideas back and forth as part of the learning and problem solving process #flipclass
Here is a link to the site my Bio students use. They go through at their “own pace”. I do have deadlines for test dates. They must have unit completed by then. https://t.co/iHuXar9hcf#flipclass
I do mostly "in-flip" with my geometry classes, and then with my upper level pre-calc classes I give them more responsibility with watching the videos on their own time (whether that's in class or out of class) #flipclass
A2: This is a tough one for me...I have tried mixed levels and they sometimes work, sometimes one just does all of the work. I have tried friend groups (mostly bc they are seniors) and that one works for my honors level but not academic. I'm a bit stumped here.... #flipclass
@JJBackeberg I do many collaborative quizzes where Ss work in groups of 2 to encourage discussion through the testing process, we have collaborative parts on on midterms and finals too #flipclass
A2: I struggle with this. I used to always pick the groups, either through random cards or my choice. Then I started letting them pick who they work with. Last year it was pretty successful; this year I'm having mixed success. #flipclass
😂 truth be told, I didn’t even know it still counted as a #flipclass if some of the work was in-class! Thanks! While the model works, I really need to expand on the variety of resources available to students. I have all levels of differentiation to accommodate for.
A2 I am still working to perfect this. I try to vary student choice of groups (or pairs) with more structured/regulated discussions & conversations #flipclass
A2: Depends on the class. Some classes are assigned, others are self grouped, while the in-class flip class is based on which activity they are doing. #flipclass
A2 Research I did for teambased said create groups based on strengths/weaknesses/experiences or random was almost as successful. I went with random this year. #flipclass
I was at an interesting PD recently by a teacher who includes a group discussion component to tests & the exam. Different but very interesting! #flipclass#flipclasschat
80% for ind, 20% for group. Total grade is either ind score alone or combined whichever is higher, also I group Ss with similar grades together, keeps it fair #flipclass

for physics, Ss got a sheet outlining the 2 situations the problems would be about, including every equation from the unit (I think) written on the page...but no numbers. They had to think together about the physics involved and I guess make a plan. #flipclass#flipclasschat
Then they went into individual desks and got the test paper with all the numbers. So they plan in groups but solve individually. #flipclass#flipclasschat
Give yourself plenty of time to plan. I started making videos in March for the following school year. By the time school started in fall, most of the videos were made and I could focus on making quality assignments for Ss to do in class #flipclass
Emphasize the positives: Being able to pace themselves through the videos (pause, rewind, fast-forward), the opportunity to ask more questions in class and learn the material deeper, students who are absent have an easier time catching up #flipclass
A2 still working on this, but I would like to try the peer instruction model where they find someone with a different answer than they got to argue — er, discuss — with #flipclass#flipclasschat
On the other side, don’t get into what I call “perfastinating” (perfectionism-based procrastinating). Your first attempts may well fall flat, but that’s ok — it’s a learning curve for all. Can’t learn to skate without falling a few times. #flipclass#flipclasschat

A3 I don't have the best advice here as I am a beginner, but implementing #flipclass content work forced me to become a time-bound, centers-style teacher.
Shorter is better. Students complain about even 12 minutes. Keep in mind their pausing/etc. make them take up more than just the run time — a few shorter videos is better than one long one. #flipclass#flipclasschat

A4:Circulating mostly, asking questions of different group members each time, making sure an important concept that is practiced in the lab is included on assessment helps too. #flipclass
I agree. It’s a hard shift in mindset, but learn to give the answer surrounded by deeper questions, that way you are helping them forward and not gatekeepingnthe knowledge. #flipclass
Hi #flipclass Super de duper late to the chat.... I'm Cara from Allen Tx. My piece of advise for any new flip class T is to NOT SIT AT YOUR DESK! Don't expect the Ss to come to you, instead you go to the Ss. Talk to them, ask lots of questions, get to know EVERY student.
A4 luckily (and unluckily in many cases), YouTube is blocked in my district. So, all of the resources Ss need are presented and they choose from each objective to create their study guide. Also, allowing only a set amount of time for #flipclass content is a great motivator!
A4: Aggressively monitoring the class has helped me. When you walking around the room monitoring student work, it becomes easier for you to track off task behavior. Use a clipboard to track student progress of their work #flipclass
I assign on average 2 vids per week. Must have watched by the start of class. If not, must watch before doing class assignment. Typically, this means they would have written homework to do, Use @edpuzzle to monitor their watching #flipclass

A4 sounds like we’re on the same page - circulate, circulate, be WITH the Ss and not isolated from them. And if a discussions off track, is it because a kid needs emotional help, or is their discussion actually more scientifically interesting anyway?! #flipclass#flipclasschat
Vimeo now limits the amount of information that can be stored... I can't remember how much is allowed but Vimeo will likely cost a monthly membership fee for a #flipclass teacher. I would encourage teachers to store their videos on Google Drive in YouTube is blocked. #soeasy
Be sure to give students several days to watch a video. I posted this weeks vids last week. Give your students a chance to watch when it fits best in their time schedule. #flipclass

I have to remember this, especially with older Ss trying to balance working and school. I think shorter vids are shorter for that reason too but it can still be a legit struggle for some. #flipclass#flipclasschat

Hi Vanessa. I found the best way to introduce #flipclass is to send a video home to the parents. Let them experience #flipclass too! A rule of thumb is 1 minute per age. So a 5th grader shouldn't be assigned a video longer than 10-11 minutes.

Ah! Do you mean like a concept map? And if so, do you have an example of what that looks like? I have a feeling that would really help some of my students that don't know where to start! #flipclass

90% of my students have the video watched on time. It is typically the same students who do not watch every time. Although, they probably are not doing much homework in any class #flipclass

A5 most notably problem solving, Ss now have time to work together in class, when a S asks me to check their answer I refer them back to the group #flipclass
yes, I give Ss at least 3 days to watch a video, I assign 1 per week, tomorrow will be an in-class flip b/c I didn’t want to assign a video during winter break #flipclass

A5: not sure I have many specific examples, more that I have had more time to challenge Ss thinking and dive deeper into concepts (both things I expect Ss to collaborate on) #flipclass
Have students who did not watch the to watch while everyone else gets started in assignment. I then group those students together to work on the assignment. I also give 2 points for each video watched on time as incentive. #flipclass

being sure to NOT lecture that info if they have not watched it, if a S shows up with it not done, they have to watch it in the hallway before they can join the group activity #flipclass

Have a purpose for the learning - some group activity they need the knowledge to be able to participate. The first couple times some Ss might need to watch the vid in class while their peers get started & they will hopefully learn that’s less fun #flipclass#flipclasschat

I give points for answering the embedded questions and then also stamp Ss notes at the start of class (worth a point, also gives me a chance to check in) #flipclass

A5 I did a test retake in ESL as a group test. 1st attempt solo, 2nd attempt with a partner - agree on the answer. Paired with like ability. 50% each time, guaranteed no lower than 1st try. It was pretty successfull #flipclass

Google form for formative assessment or LMS quiz, even targeted warm up question that shows learning. Make video content necessary for class. #flipclass

A5: I had students working on modeling DNA replication. We wrote on desk, cut out models, then had students take a picture. This became their notes on replication #flipclass
A6: I think knowing your students is the key. Know what pushes their buttons and you will be better able to deal with issues before they arise. #flipclass
A6 remember the purpose of #flipclass is to answer better the question “what is the best use of my in-class time with the Ss?” Choose activities that make sense for your subject - inquiry (not just in sci!), PBL, Socratic seminars, etc. #flipclasschat
Oh man. So many questions. I need to hear more. Is #nonlinear a tool you use? With your #flipclass videos imbedded? Do Ss work at their own pace? How do you monitor/embed labs?
