Hello #FlipClass! I teach bio & enviro to self-contained, diploma-track high schoolers with IEPs! Years flipping? HA! I’m here to find ways to make flipping a reality in my class... My favorite first sign of spring is SPRING BREAK! 🛌🏖🧖🏼‍♀️

A1: in my 8th grade history/govt class, I estimate an average of 30-50% group work in some form (including pairs) ... but certain weeks it's about 100% of each day's class period! #flipclass #flipclasschat #dualhashtags
  • lauravoges Feb 26 @ 8:09 PM EST
A1: I spend the majority (~75%) of my #flipclass group space time in group work - students collaborating to solve problems, complete labs or work through challenges & application of knowledge
  • MickieGibbs2 Feb 26 @ 8:10 PM EST
Hi #flipclass. Might not get to give 100% attention tonight, but will be lurking. #flipclasschat
  • weltyteaching Feb 26 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1 wow, most of the time is group work usually in pairs, of a full week, probably up to 90% these days #flipclass
  • flippingwithjoy Feb 26 @ 8:10 PM EST
Sometimes starting small can help - flip a lesson here, a lesson there, you and the students can build up as you need. I’m trying to find recording time around my own children though so there’s that...#flipclass

  • collsphysistry Feb 26 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1. My class is interesting. I’d say 40% or more is group work. Independent time can be group work if the students choose that. #flipclass
  • michelestubenb1 Feb 26 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1: In my forensic class I spend the majority of time (about 80%) on group work- I find they work best in pairs #flipclass
  • lanier_katiesue Feb 26 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1 with the exception of most unit tests and knowledge checks, it's all planned or possible group work in my physics classes #flipclass
  • michelestubenb1 Feb 26 @ 8:11 PM EST
I like giving them the option of independant work too #flipclass
    In reply to @collsphysistry
  • knightbio1 Feb 26 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1: Maybe between 70-80%. I try to make most activities group work. Being able to collaborate is an important skill. Students typically work in groups of 2 or 3 #flipclass
  • flipping_A_tchr Feb 26 @ 8:11 PM EST
would Socratic Seminars count as "group work"? #flipclass #flipclasschat #AskingForAFriend
  • flippingwithjoy Feb 26 @ 8:12 PM EST
A1 Hmm...maybe 30-40%? Sometimes the students have options to work alone or in groups - the introvert in me likes to give the introverts in them the choice sometimes (but not always) #flipclass

  • JJBackeberg Feb 26 @ 8:12 PM EST
A1: Unless we're taking a test, I always encourage my students to work in small groups or pairs. I think it's important for them to be able to work together and bounce ideas back and forth as part of the learning and problem solving process #flipclass
  • michelestubenb1 Feb 26 @ 8:13 PM EST
    Agree!! #flipclass
    In reply to @JJBackeberg
  • lanier_katiesue Feb 26 @ 8:13 PM EST
A1+ The team based model I'm using is all group in class. Independent happens outside class. (Most like it, it's driving one guy bats.) #flipclass
  • weltyteaching Feb 26 @ 8:13 PM EST
A1 more here, I want Ss to talk to each other about physics and have discussions to develop a better understanding and ownership #flipclass
  • flipping_A_tchr Feb 26 @ 8:13 PM EST
Well yeah, and discussion skill-building is what we're working on. (The flipped lessons are the basis of conversation!) #flipclass #flipclasschat
    In reply to @collsphysistry
  • mollywmus Feb 26 @ 8:13 PM EST
A1: I haven’t implemented #flipclass in my own classes yet, as I find a lack of internet access/computers at home a large barrier. Currently we use 1/3 of our time for “flipped learning” as a center, 1/3 of our time in group work, and 1/3 of our time extending independently.
  • flippingwithjoy Feb 26 @ 8:14 PM EST
Is it the model where there is an inner and outer ring, with one inner & one outer member in a pair? Because that would be...#flipclass #flipclasschat

  • knightbio1 Feb 26 @ 8:15 PM EST
Do you have access to computers in your class? My Bio students do well with the in-class flip #flipclass
    In reply to @mollywmus
  • Va_Nee_Nee Feb 26 @ 8:15 PM EST
I would definitely consider Socratic Seminars group work! Students are doing the heavy lifting by working in groups to discuss answers to various questions. It also gives them the opportunity to learn from one another and that is exactly what group work does #flipclass
    In reply to @flipping_A_tchr
  • flipping_A_tchr Feb 26 @ 8:15 PM EST
Yeah, that's it! Except I call them Horseshoe Discussions, because as a claustrophobe I find the classic fishbowl setup to be uncomfortable. (And of course I made a video to introduce them to Ss: https://t.co/bTn76YCrMZ) #flipclass #flipclasschat

Oh...favorite first sign of spring: daffodils. But I always feel sorry for them, cause they only last till the next freeze. Or maybe I should say robins; I actually start looking for them before the daffodils. #flipclass

Here is a link to the site my Bio students use. They go through at their “own pace”. I do have deadlines for test dates. They must have unit completed by then. https://t.co/iHuXar9hcf #flipclass

  • JJBackeberg Feb 26 @ 8:19 PM EST
I do mostly "in-flip" with my geometry classes, and then with my upper level pre-calc classes I give them more responsibility with watching the videos on their own time (whether that's in class or out of class) #flipclass

A2 this is part of where I need to grow. Fortunately, my kids set good models of group work types. #flipclass
  • michelestubenb1 Feb 26 @ 8:20 PM EST
A2: This is a tough one for me...I have tried mixed levels and they sometimes work, sometimes one just does all of the work. I have tried friend groups (mostly bc they are seniors) and that one works for my honors level but not academic. I'm a bit stumped here.... #flipclass
  • weltyteaching Feb 26 @ 8:20 PM EST
@JJBackeberg I do many collaborative quizzes where Ss work in groups of 2 to encourage discussion through the testing process, we have collaborative parts on on midterms and finals too #flipclass
    In reply to @tobiemichele, @JJBackeberg
  • MickieGibbs2 Feb 26 @ 8:20 PM EST
A2: I struggle with this. I used to always pick the groups, either through random cards or my choice. Then I started letting them pick who they work with. Last year it was pretty successful; this year I'm having mixed success. #flipclass
  • mollywmus Feb 26 @ 8:20 PM EST
😂 truth be told, I didn’t even know it still counted as a #flipclass if some of the work was in-class! Thanks! While the model works, I really need to expand on the variety of resources available to students. I have all levels of differentiation to accommodate for.
    In reply to @lauravoges
  • lauravoges Feb 26 @ 8:21 PM EST
A2 I am still working to perfect this. I try to vary student choice of groups (or pairs) with more structured/regulated discussions & conversations #flipclass
  • michelestubenb1 Feb 26 @ 8:21 PM EST
If I had my way, assessment would always be based on collaboration....but......I hate tests too. #flipclass
    In reply to @tobiemichele
  • knightbio1 Feb 26 @ 8:21 PM EST
A2: Depends on the class. Some classes are assigned, others are self grouped, while the in-class flip class is based on which activity they are doing. #flipclass
  • mollywmus Feb 26 @ 8:21 PM EST

A2 Research I did for teambased said create groups based on strengths/weaknesses/experiences or random was almost as successful. I went with random this year. #flipclass
  • Va_Nee_Nee Feb 26 @ 8:21 PM EST
I have not used the #flipclass model yet, but typically in my class students spend 35-40 minutes in a 58-minute block for group work/ partner work.

80% for ind, 20% for group. Total grade is either ind score alone or combined whichever is higher, also I group Ss with similar grades together, keeps it fair #flipclass

  • flippingwithjoy Feb 26 @ 8:28 PM EST
for physics, Ss got a sheet outlining the 2 situations the problems would be about, including every equation from the unit (I think) written on the page...but no numbers. They had to think together about the physics involved and I guess make a plan. #flipclass #flipclasschat

I agree. It’s a hard shift in mindset, but learn to give the answer surrounded by deeper questions, that way you are helping them forward and not gatekeepingnthe knowledge. #flipclass

Hi #flipclass Super de duper late to the chat.... I'm Cara from Allen Tx. My piece of advise for any new flip class T is to NOT SIT AT YOUR DESK! Don't expect the Ss to come to you, instead you go to the Ss. Talk to them, ask lots of questions, get to know EVERY student.
  • mollywmus Feb 26 @ 8:37 PM EST
A4 luckily (and unluckily in many cases), YouTube is blocked in my district. So, all of the resources Ss need are presented and they choose from each objective to create their study guide. Also, allowing only a set amount of time for #flipclass content is a great motivator!
  • flippingwithjoy Feb 26 @ 8:38 PM EST

A4: Aggressively monitoring the class has helped me. When you walking around the room monitoring student work, it becomes easier for you to track off task behavior. Use a clipboard to track student progress of their work #flipclass

I assign on average 2 vids per week. Must have watched by the start of class. If not, must watch before doing class assignment. Typically, this means they would have written homework to do, Use @edpuzzle to monitor their watching #flipclass

A4 sounds like we’re on the same page - circulate, circulate, be WITH the Ss and not isolated from them. And if a discussions off track, is it because a kid needs emotional help, or is their discussion actually more scientifically interesting anyway?! #flipclass #flipclasschat

Vimeo now limits the amount of information that can be stored... I can't remember how much is allowed but Vimeo will likely cost a monthly membership fee for a #flipclass teacher. I would encourage teachers to store their videos on Google Drive in YouTube is blocked. #soeasy

Hi Vanessa. I found the best way to introduce #flipclass is to send a video home to the parents. Let them experience #flipclass too! A rule of thumb is 1 minute per age. So a 5th grader shouldn't be assigned a video longer than 10-11 minutes.
