Happy Saturday Morning! @teresagross625 - co moderator and I hope you enjoyed Thanksgiving with your family and friends. Please introduce yourself and share any joyful photos you might have handy with the #BookCampPD family from your turkey day festivities!
Meredith joining from SW FL My husband and I have a new Thanksgiving tradition, now that we live in Florida. We have dinner on this beautiful boat and meet lots of new friends. #BookCampPD
A1. I have used social media to forge connections w/ inspiring EDUs & global collaborative projects for our classes to join. For example: water project w/ @matonedechiwit & @ProfeEdTech#BookCampPD
Q1. What are your own experiences with social media in teaching and learning? What is one way you might model and explore digital leadership? Chapter 3 #BookCampPD
I have really looked to my PLN this year, for ideas and discussions. I talk to my students about them we have looked at my tweets at times. Showing Ss the positive reach Social Networks have is great #BookCampPD
Q1. What are your own experiences with social media in teaching and learning? What is one way you might model and explore digital leadership? Chapter 3 #BookCampPD
A1. We use Instagram in the classroom, Ss can tag me in posts. Students love seeing their work and taking credit for it outside of the classroom. I use it to reflect back on Ss discourse to see how I could do better. #bookcamppd
A1: #BookCampPD Have struggled with this quite frankly. In the IB curriculum things are quite clear and adhere to specific routes. But use SM more for my own professional purposes than in a class.
A1 I'll admit that my experience is limited. Our district has a pretty strict policy, something they're looking into, we use google classroom currently. #BookCampPD
A1: My experiences with social media and learning have been positive. I meet wonderful educators, authors, and artists through Twitter. Because of it I've brought Mystery Skype, Flipgrid, @Seesaw and guest authors into my class.#bookcamppd
A1) I tried #EdModo with my students when I was teaching. It gave me a platform to associate their #facebook aspirations in my math class. We engaged in discussions, students asked their own questions, took polls, explained thinking, & next steps. #BookCampPD
A1: I use Twitter all the time for a myriad of my own PLCs and do find out the news straight from the source ASAP. Have started trying to use a class account to help find ideas for #geniushour projects with Ss #BookCampPD
A1: Twitter for PD and connections has been amazing! I try share this with as many T's as I can, and do a Twitter for T's & Admin. PD as often as I can. #BookCampPD
Q1. What are your own experiences with social media in teaching and learning? What is one way you might model and explore digital leadership? Chapter 3 #BookCampPD
A1 I use Twitter personally to learn through Twitter chats. Have been trying to bring other Ts on board by offering after school PD on Twitter to any Ts interested. #BookCampPD
A1: Working with elementary age students limits me the ability to use social media in the classroom. Google classroom and @padlet are great tools we use to collaborate information #bookcamppd
A1) Have been using all forms of social media - Twitter for learning / PD , Instagram for sharing photography and other work of mine, and also snapchat etc to find out what my kids are doing :). Just started reading socialedia and love the other perspective #BookCampPD
It's awesome, isn't it?! I always start with "they made me tweet" because I was told to get on for work and didn't really want to. I also tell them they don't have to follow the Kardasians or the president to be on Twitter. #BookCampPD
That's great Chris! So much opportunity to teach #digcit and digital leadership in the moment with a class account. Kids help make decisions about private/public which will help in their own lives #BookCampPD
I know, it's amazing, had I not started with Facebook, there are so many people I wouldn't know, and more importantly, so many resources for my Ss that I wouldn't have #BookCampPD
I use @padlet for my PD's too. It's an easy way to share the presentation and other resources that pop up during discussions. I use it as a feedback wall too. #BookCampPD

My tech T encouraged me and I drug my feet at first, but I'm glad I finally got on board! Would love to get more in our district connected! #BookCampPD
#bookcamppd When I recommended this to my juniors and seniors they were convinced we would get no work done. :D So we dropped that idea and we run internal forums on the class website instead.
A2:Honest and Frank Discussions about the dangers but also the benefits. Responsibility seems to be a lost art with youth. Everything done for them, this they need to learn not just be told. #BookCampPD
A2 it has to start with digital citizenship, I don't think we can ignore the issue any longer. Kids need to learn that their digital footprint is going to follow them. #BookCampPD
I try to bring it up on a weekly basis! This year we’re making an effort to better involve parents in the learning process. They need to be aware of digital tattoos too!
#bookcampPD
A2: Social Media is a part of everyday life. It’s a part of social interactions for professional reasons (hi #pln) and it helps students build connections they wouldn’t ever have otherwise. We just have to show them how to use it responsibly. #bookcamppd
A1 I use Twitter for the best-ever, self-directed PD. I teach adult ELLs so I haven't used social media with my classes. (Checking in from Edmonton, AB) #BookCampPD
Had the opportunity to speak to 2000 students the other day! Few of them understand how to intentionally improve their online presence. We definitely need to do more to help! #BookCampPD
#bookcamppd Older kids look at SM as a personal space. They dont want "school" on there. Makes it weird. So the main point would be to integrate their school existence with SM from top down. Right from the director to Principals should be leading it and not just class Ts.
A1 I remeber the full faculty discussion with the district PR person admonishing all of us about social media 10 years ago.... FEAR! it can have great control and cause us to miss out. #bookcamppd
A2: Model interacting positively at a young age through @Flipgrid, @PenpalSchools. @Seesaw so that Ss believe that social media is used to make powerful connections and build the world up. #bookcamppd

A2: Model and teach them, don't assume they know what to do! What are the benefits? What should they post? How can they interact with others? #bookcamppd

I loved what I read in the book about students learning how to effectively become "first responders" Just think of the tremendous learning that takes place! #BookCampPD
I can be honest I struggled with giving access to kids (my own included) because my paternal protective nature kicked in but, then I asked myself, if kids can access without my guidance what would happen then😳😳😳 #BookCampPD
Yes, Totally. This book gave me a new perspective, not just using it to connect, but to use it to make a difference in our world. #bookcamppd
I love how you have approached all the myths, explained going digital beyond citizenship #bookcamppd
I teach 7th Graders. Idk why I am nervous about parents! I haven’t had any pushback about my Instagram… But it’s private and we don’t use it during school hours, Ss use it on their own time. #bookcamppd
A2: Digital Citizenship! I love the resources on @CommonSense for S's. I also like to tell stories about people who have lost jobs or opportunities because of not being a good digital citizen. #BookCampPD
A2: making the usage is intentional and for learning purposes. I believe there’s enough free fun media usage at home so at school should be strictly for learning #bookcamppd
Aww! Thanks, Teresa! I always learn from you. I get super excited when I see/hear a Podcast with you as a guest because you’re always so insightful. #bookcamppd

We need to coach them through it. Start them young and show them what is good and bad about SM and how they ought to use it. If we don't they might make poor choices with SM when we all know they are better than that. #bookcampPD
#bookcamppd Lol. I know. One of my seniors told me why she got out of FB - "too many teachers and family on there!" Sometimes we fail to see that we perhaps dont know whats best for them. Our intent is right, but the route is not.
I believe this is KEY to moving forward! Educators can't run around like chickens with their heads cut off - students need to own this and help each other! #BookCampPD

I actually started all social media to spy on my kids and keep in touch with whats happening in their world :).But eventually learned how useful it is for me! #bookcamppd

Q3. How can we include families in the conversation about social media use? What courageous conversation could you have (have you had) with families about the changing world? Chapters 7 and 9 #BookCampPD
#bookcamppd Precisely why older kids get turned off by SM. Too much T interference in what they are doing. They want you out of there. Leave them alone! Lol.
A3 Have a class account that shares the great things happening everyday. Bring the families into the room, real-time. Helps bridge that "What did you do at school today?" Interact often and engage. #bookcamppd
A2: Social media success...need to teach our students how to think critically (questioning what they see and hear), be respectful, collaborate and seek to make the world a better place through posts/interactions. #BookCampPD
A3: Have not had to have any tough conversations. I do not leave things open to public and kids that do not want images (or parents that don't) of themselves online are not up. #BookCampPD

A3: Share the WHY with parents: teach Ss how to leverage social media for connections, flatten walls of class, get other perspectives, & celebrate their successes https://t.co/Ke0G76Rr25#BookCampPD
That is exactly what brought me to my journey writing #socialLEADia The more I looked, the more I found an inequity with how some students leverage social media and some don't. An equity issue? #BookCampPD
I can be honest I struggled with giving access to kids (my own included) because my paternal protective nature kicked in but, then I asked myself, if kids can access without my guidance what would happen then😳😳😳 #BookCampPD
#bookcamppd Kids like us get too self conscious when we know someone of authority is watching. if we push them too much then we lose our authority over them. Purely my opinion. They respect us because we respect their privacy. Atleast for older kids. My 2 cents.

A3: I don't think my convo was courageous, but I did a Flipgrid with Ss and asked parents to respond as well. Many did and the Ss loved it! It was fun for Ps and Ss. #bookcamppd
A1 #BookCampPD Sorry I'm late to the game! I think it's important that we model what it means to be responsible and mature on social media. I also think it's important that we make social media work for us just as we are right now discussing a great book with our PLN.
A3: Make sure we explain that social media in the classroom is helping our Ss to see the professional uses of it! I think many adults do not see the power SM holds within! #bookcamppd
Haha That's funny. That is my fear when we take TOO much of their world. Some things should be for them, doesn't always have to have us lurking around. #bookcamppd

A3: We have been able to leverage @Seesaw to bring parents on board with social media...a safe learning and sharing environment...good place to begin. #BookCampPD
#bookcamppd Agree. its ironic that we as Ts keep demanding private time and our space and time to disconnect from work but wont think twice about stepping right into our students' SM lives. hehe.

A2 #BookCampPD We need to walk through it with them! We need to focus on the idea of digital citizenship mentioned in the text. Even when it comes to cell phone use in class... I don't ban it. I teach appropriate ways to use their phone in a "public" setting.
It is time to begin the #BookCampPD rotation again. On December 2 we will start with "Book Tasting", December 9 "Porch Swing", December16 "Shine the Spotlight", and Dec. 30 guest author @jmattmiller "Ditch That ..." Please mark down the dates!

Finding that happy balance. I try and leave some of it alone for them and show them through other avenues. Twitter is great because none of them use it, I can model and teach with it. #bookcamppd
I think this is VERY true! We are only in the beginning, foundational stages of using social media with students. Decisions we make now will guide us toward the future. #BookCampPD
A3: We have been able to leverage @Seesaw to bring parents on board with social media...a safe learning and sharing environment...good place to begin. #BookCampPD
Thank you all for joining us this morning. Together we are stronger when we learn from each other. Many thanks to my co-moderator, @teresagross625 her ongoing support is invaluable! #BookCampPD
#bookcamppd Twitter is not popular with my groups. They look at it as something for celebs and other "wannabe celebs" for ego inflation. Thats why they choose more down to earth and direct platforms. I dont bother to find out what they are. haha.
A3 I’ve had conversations with a few parents and always remember to say I don’t show full faces. It’s a mutual respect and have never had an issue. #bookcamppd
Thank you @mjjohnson1216@teresagross625& everyone at #BookCampPD Need to run! IN a Curling bonspiel and hoping my team has been doing well without me!! Enjoy the rest of your long weekend. :)
Great #bookcamppd today as always! What an wonderfil #PLN. Thank you @JCasaTodd for your book and taking the risk to have the dialogue about the great things with SM! Have a great week everyone.
