A1: Hi and happy holidays! Dorina from the Florida Georgia Line : Educational (consultant-teacher!) “teacher on loan” but working in Spanish Immersion Schools in Minnesota this week !! Woohoooooo!!! #ellchat
A1 Good evening #ELLCHAT I’m Karen Nemeth, co-host of this chat and I focus my work on teaching strategies and resources for ELLs/DLLs in PReK and K.
A2. Ss love listening to music. I had a newcomer a few years back that didn't want to speak during class, but he loved listening to music videos. He had so many questions about the videos. He actually learned a lot about our culture from those videos. #ellchat
A2: Retention of knowledge...limbic system in brain lets students connect to content, diversify the genres and culture...music transcends language, use subtitles in videos or lyrics and listening, speaking and reading all in one! and straight up FUN. #ellchat
A2) Songs can help students build vocabulary, grammar, and cultural aspects - they are engaging for students and provide examples of authentic language #ellchat
A2)English language proficient or not, ELs love music. I use songs to practice their listening skills as well as to increase their vocab. Ss will repeat lyrics without understanding the meaning, so I make sure they get the idea of the song(s). #Ellchat
A2 Indeed, many people will say many wonderful things about the value of using music to teach ELLs, but I often see it used in counterproductive ways. It’s not JUST music - it has to be purposeful, meaningful music that is also FUN! #ELLCHAT
A2 The rhythms, patterns, tones and joy of music are wonderful supports for language learning, but what if the words of the song are not really usable? Ex. Days of the Week song - you learn them, but you can’t use them to interact, learn or solve problems :( #ELLCHAT

A2) Music promotes high engagement and is an amazing way to integrate listening for specific vocab too! Also a good way to show positive representation #ELLCHAT
@mspopel This is Twitter - we can’t see if you sneaked in late. Just say, “Carlene here, I got here early and have been composing all of my insightful tweets while you all got started.” or something like that. We’ll believe you! #ELLCHAT
A2)I will also add that it helps Ss understand rhyme. When I explain to my Ss that songs are like a long poem full of rhymes, their "ah-ha faces" light up. #Ellchat
A2 Another way that the wonders of music can go wrong is when the new language is not integrated into the activities of the day - especially trouble for young ELLs/DLLs Music teacher breezes in, teaches a song, then those words never appear again. Nothing sticks! #ELLCHAT
A2 resource. We had music teacher Sarah Minette on the @ELLevationED Highest Aspirations podcast to talk about how music and tech can help support diverse learners. https://t.co/ul9jzMewXD#EllChat
A2 but, if classroom tchr and music tchr collaborate with ESL tchr, they can all choose music, activities, content that is connected through the words learned in the songs, right? #ELLCHAT Revolutionary, right?

A2: I used Indian Films to teach Figurative Language and Intercultural Awareness; From Bollywood to Hyperbole! I’ll he presenting this at NABE and presented it in Iowa at #ICLC2018#ELLCHAT If interested, message me and I can share!! :-) Oh! And we DANCE!!!
A2)I think that music also adds that element of fun to a classroom. I'm a firm believer that when Ss have fun, they pay more attention and are more responsive. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. :) #Ellchat

A3: I am a strong believer in incorporating music/songs into my lessons. I think it makes learning more fun and engaging and students are more likely to remember the information. #ellchat#edu435
A3 Reading poems and chants that use students' names have worked so well for letter and sound recognition (ex- I like you you like me we're good friends as friends should be _____ likes ____) @FountasPinnell phonics has some very explicit and effective songs and poems #ELLchat
Ok! It’s AWESOME&soooooo fun &engaging! For formative assessment, Ss each have a rattan fan (like the ones in Thailand) & on it the have each Figurative Lang terminology: hyperbole simile metaphor et al When Ss see it in the song part of the film, they hold up the fan! #ELLChat
A3 So, for #preK tchr training, I make everyone sing the song Baby Beluga with me - first in sign language, then with sings + English. Then, I bring out the stuff to extend conversations and play #ELLCHAT
A3. I use music when I teach about traditions. My Ss share their favorite songs and we play them during their presentations. We also learn some of their dances if they are not too shy to dance. #ELLChat
A3 - Also my student teacher recently used Mona Haydar's Wrap My Hijab to teach about poetry, which connected to the studenta choosing their own songs and explaining what they liked about them #ELLchat
A3 I tell teachers: When you choose songs or stories, you have to first answer “what for?” (what’s the purpose of the content?) then “What more?” (how will you follow up?) No music in isolation. if it doesn’t exist - Create it! #ELLCHAT
A3 also very powerful to include music and arts classes into units that allow students to create their own pieces of music. I had a strong connection with music teachers as an HS Spanish teacher. #EllChat
A3 When my mom got her elementary teaching certificate in the 1950s, she had to demonstrate proficiency on a musical instrument to get certified. Isn’t that something? #ELLCHAT
It’s really important to use it for purpose. @KarenNemethEdM you really get it. There needs to be essential question before and goal setting: without it...can lack rigor. It’s great and AWESOME and necessary to have fun::: but purposeful fun... #ELLChat
Today it's rare to have an elementary classroom teacher who also plays the piano. However, I don't sing well and I used a lot of music in my ESL class with tapes. #ELLCHAT

A4 In any drama production, there is a element of collaboration involved. Some of that involves behind the scenes work that requires less language skill. Great way to keep everyone involved and create something tangible. #EllChat
Believe it!!! Accomplished women! #JaneAustensaysthatalot To add to that, certain Eastern European countries, Ss are required to be fluent in more than two languages and a MINIMuM of one instrument by age 12. #ELLChat

A4- build confidence, build creativity, use students' STRENGTHS (ex- acting out vocab), using vocab in context, playing with language (rhyme).... everyone, regardless of language can experience success with drama #ELLchat
A3) This is an activity I have done. Day 1, Ss will receive the lyrics without some words, so they will listen to try to figure out the words missing. Then I'll show them the full lyrics. Day 2, Ss will complete the prompt seen on last pic. See examples . #Ellchat
A4 Music and drama go together in extending learning and providing constructive practice. Even if sometimes, the “drama” is just story retelling. Check out this video example from Teaching at the Beginning https://t.co/zyfdMV7udw#ELLCHAT
Drama using FlipGrid and Story on SnapChat is really impactful and more our Ss vibe. Be sure to vary way to incorporate -as many don’t like “on stage” #ELLCHAT :-)
A4) Benefits of using drama in the classroom: student engage with learning, they pay attention and want to be a part of the dramatizing, collaboration, active learning. #ELLCHAT
.
A4- engaging students physically, making them laugh, teaching emotion reading... I could answer this question 10x... and my ELLs seem to have a natural talent for drama games and comedic timing
#ELLchat
A4. ELs love drama! Many of our ELs come from a culture that embraces story telling. We love a good story! We also like to use hand gestures when we speak, vary our voices as we get excited or serious and love to tell jokes. All of these things add to a great story. #Ellchat
A4 Context - as provided by drama activities - is so important for young language learners. Plus, this helps teachers step away from needing to control everything. #ELLCHAT
#ELLCHAT I’m at one percent on my phone with no charger here! It’s in the car: I’m not going out in that Minnesota cold! Have a great night y’all! Be safe and Sing & Dance & be happy!!PS Hamilton Soundtrack is transforming high school #ELL and we are all going to see it in Feb!
A5) Using readers' theater. It helps Ss with their listening, speaking, reading, and comprehension skills. It also assists Ss to understand dialogues better. #Ellchat
I have incorporated plays and Readers Theatre into my lessons. We also did a poetry unit in which we acted out the poem. The Ss imaginations came out full force and their interpretations were so creative. #ELLchat

A6 I think iTunes is a great resource for this. Once you download your familiar music, you can easily search by key words. But you can also search for songs you don’t own on other services, even you tube #ELLCHAT Better than rummaging through shoebox of CDs!
This is a great way to incorporate the arts into the classroom! I recently observed a lesson where the students were learning estimation and they made up their own songs/poems about the topic! It was definitely engaging and the ss loved it :) #edu435#ellchat
A6- for drama resources, most of them have been from my own experience as an actor, but the book SCENES and 101 Drama Games For Children are really good #ELLchat
