We are in the midst of a REAL summer heatwave....temps have been over 90 going on 3 days...more to come! (Of course, no complaining from me - I LOVE this!) #4thchat
Hi! You will love the chats! (This might be slow tonight since we didn't publish early enough). Feel free to ask questions. You will love #4thchat (Mondays at 8 EST) as everyone is so friendly and willing to share.
We are so glad you are here. #4thchat is a great place to connect. A little slow in the summer tho. Just put the hashtag in every tweet so it stays in the stream. And, if there is Q1 (question 1) answer with A1 (answer 1). Welcome!
A1 Weekends of Exploration and Entertainment https://t.co/wpmC0beHtw Here are some ideas taken from the summer adventures we spent with our children. #4thchat
Very cool ideas! I'm planning on doing something like this for my mom's 70th birthday celebration next week. I want my son to make a collage of pics he likes so that he can keep it as a memento. So not for the destination, more for the celebration. #4thchat
Love the idea!!! Will be great to have that as he gets older. #4thchat I love collage making! I had students do a collage at the beginning of the year about things that would represent what they like. #4thchat
A3: writing prompts, making a where have we been map to find similarities or connections within the first week, bring in items from summer to discuss #4thchat

Hi, there! I'm Sarah from Phoenix, AZ! New to real time #edchat on Twitter, but looking to expand my #PLN before teaching 6th grade bio this year (after previously only teaching HS science).
#4thchat
Hi @KRScienceLady I LOVE this idea! Anytime we can get the kids investigating - it's a good thing. I can see the kids finding this loving this because it is relevant! #4thchat
Hi Sarah - Your year will sure be different from HS to sixth! Happy to be a part of your #PLN (I'm a digital learning coach for K-5) but happy to help you if needed. #4thchat

He's autistic, so he has a hard time with the printed word, but if visuals are added to the text, he does much better. So we practice writing about the videos he watches. #4thchat
A5: I have been known to take pics with people or animals. I like to ask kids to write about what happened right before the picture, or what happened right after! #4thchat
A2: Understanding relevant local issues & phenomena, then incorporating it in the classroom can help keep students engaged and prepare you to answer unique (geographically specific) questions students have about things they've observed.

I just finished @halseanderson "Ashes" which was 3rd book in "Seeds of America" trilogy! Great historical fiction around the American Revolution. #4thchat Love reading student books. Easy to recommend them.
Classes question each other w/ yes/no questions via Skype or Google Hangouts to guess each others' locations. Lots of fun! https://t.co/j6pIUYL0vx Can substitute Mystery Number; etc. #4thchat
Great idea to incorporate students' vacations/personal lives. Love this concept for shorter breaks as well, as a low stress assignment. "Look for something interesting around you during break. How can you use sci to learn about it?"

A8: If as a group we chose 10 places we would LIKE to visit over a summer, than we can put pins with Google Maps and discover similarities and differences together! #4thchat
A3: Have students reflect on observations from their vacations, then analyze which questions might be answered through science. Better if they're primed before suummer to look for cool stuff to share the next Fall!
#4thchat
What I like about that idea is that it doesn't matter if students went anywhere or not during the break. Level playing field for all. #4thchat You're so thoughtful @JennRegruth

I like the idea about finding interesting places along the way - again - students don't really have to have gone there...just getting used to maps! #4thchat
A5 Students study the photos and describe what they think is happening. Then the partner does the same. Then they both write the story they see #4thchat
This is always a main point I make when advocating for teacher autonomy in the curriculum! The concepts may be the same nationally, but how different local classes get there is not.

A10: I love using gallery walks and stickers. Put up poster boards with different summer activities and have kids put up small stickers to show which ones they have done! Then graph and talk about info! #4thchat
Gallery walks are so fun...who can resist putting up stickers??? Summer break can include anything from riding bikes, reading books, swimming to traveling. #4thchat

A round of virtual applause for @ncarroll24 for creating and scheduling the questions and to our "new to #4thchat" crowd that was amazing! We hope you all come back Mondays at 8est. Feel free to request a topic!
